I went here today to look for an alternative pet food brand for TC, my Shih Tzu. I normally buy U/D, a prescription food, at PetSmart. It's a specialized food for urinary care but it's quite expensive and he hates the taste. The young lady at PetSmart suggested I come here and I'm glad I did. Upon entering, the young lady with the red hair comes up to me offering assistance and I explain what I'm looking for and she offers helpful suggestions and was quite knowledgeable. I settle on a brand that I can give both of my dogs (I have a Yorkie too) and it's reasonably priced considering I only have to buy one big bag instead of two. She also gave me a free can of pumpkin (Switch) to help with the transition. Well, I nervously bring it home and feed to the babies and my Yorkie gobbles it up; TC eats most which is amazing considering it took him 3 days to adjust to the U/D. I was impressed with the customer service and the selection. I will be coming here often and plan to bring them here for their next bath. The store is nice and clean too. read more

I have been coming here for years with my 12 y old GSD. Lately, he has been having hard time climbing up into the tub, due to hip dysplasia and arthritis, so I just wash him on the floor. Today , I encounter rude person with her two dogs, who told me not to wash my dog on the floor . I informed her, that my dog can't climb up and this is what I have to do. She said, I am making a mess and it's not allowed. My water was running down in one stream to the drainer and it didn't affect anyone's flow or made the floor wet elsewhere. I went to the register and asked ( even thought I already knew) is it ok for me to wash him on the floor. The stuff was kind and said yes, that is why they have the hooks at the bottom for. I advised them, there is a rude person, who is not happy with me washing my dog there . Employee came with me and said it out loud " please , go ahead and wash your dog on the floor, a lot of people do that and it is meant for that purpose too. She even gave me extra towels and stayed there until I finished . I wish I knew her name . For years (at least 15+ years) I have gone to small pet stores. Little neighborhood types. When my favorite closed i had to find new place to get my dogs food they had been eating. (I always loved the Pet Food Express in Alameda) So i decided to give this location a try. I am honestly so happy that i did. Regardless of the time of day or day of the week i go in, i always get someones undivided attention. If they do not know the answer to the questions you ask they find someone who does. I've been going though issues with dietary restrictions for my dogs and being able to go in and talk to someone who is knowledgeable about different foods has been wonderful. I had shopped here for about 2 years before meeting Merissa, Susan and Morgan. Merissa saved the day with recommendations for a better quality prescription diet (yuck to royal canine and science diet). She did some research for me while i waited and suggested a few options of what i could try. All of which were great. I never feel pressured to buy something higher end or more $$. One time i bought a dog food that didn't agree with my dogs tummies, but at that point i had mixed it in with my other food, rather than lose the $, the manager Susan basically gave me credit for the 25 pound bag i had bought so i could get another one. Saving me a lot of money (you know a 25lb bag of dog food isn't cheap), and making it so my dogs didn't have to deal with a food that wasnt working for their digestion. I visit this location i would say at least twice a month to pick up their food and each time I see the same familiar faces and they all ask how my guys are doing, even going as far to remember their issues and types of dogs. I normally leave very positive reviews for this location; however, I had a very bad customer service issue on April 7th. Around 6:00 I approached the counter for a return. The cashier (ID # 9) was plain rude! He simply took back the item and slid a receipt into the tray without any communication. What was glaring though was that he appeared not only irritated but impatient. Not the type of customer care I normally receive from this store...not even close! I had a really good experience. I was surprised that Canidae dog food was not available. I had to switch to another brand and was recommended. Since I was completely out of my dog food I was a little worried he was going to have the runs or throw up. And I mentioned that to her. The store manager she was very helpful. You know those crazy Berkeley parents who dress their children in undyed, organic fabrics? The ones who pay $10k a year so their 5 year olds don't have to fraternize with poor people or brown people? I'm talking about the sort of parents that would rather commit murder-suicides before allowing their children to touch a toy made in China. I'm like that with my pets. I don't give a crap about kids, but I want to make sure that my animals have only the best. That's why I love Pet Food Express. I trust them. They only carry foods that they've tested, so I don't have to worry about feeding my dog things like lead, corn meal, or...other dogs (I'm looking at you, Iams!). They notify me when the products change in my pets' foods. On top of all that, the staff is just plain nice. They take time to get to know their pet visitors, and my dog gets treats every time we go in. Sometimes when I go in without my dog, they'll come up to me and ask, "How's Comet doing?" That's amazing! They give stuff away so often that I wonder how they stay in business. My only constructive criticism is that they have a very small selection of turtle supplies, so I end up having to go to Petsmart for filters and bulbs. read more

A huge pet food store. Lots of leashes and stuff to rub on your dirty mutt and/or stinky puss. They will even wash your mongrel here. All sorts of stuff for all sorts of animals. I don't think they got stuff for horses though. Most importantly (to me) is that they sell tropical fish and fishtank supplies. Not the best place for tropical fish and tank supplies, but some items are priced very low because this is the Wal Mart of pet stores and they buy in bulk. When I had dogs they always did a good job trimming them and washing them. who in the hell wants to wash someone else's dog or even their own dog? No fun. I have been going to this pet food express for 15 years and have large dogs spending $4,000 to $5,000 annually. Nice people clean store, yet they will not replace their dog washing equipment and the soap will not come out. You have to bring your own soap. They just raised the wash price from $15 to $18. Its not a dog wash its a dog rinse. So I am told by an employee THIS particular pet food express is old and doesn't work well. I told them even though I live much further away I will go to the El Cerrito Pet Food Express to wash my dog and buy my products. Go to this place all the time for self washing baths for our Pomeranian, dog treats, clothes, harnest's ect. We were promptly greeted by a very friendly and up beat associate named Chad who took us to the aisle and helped me compare brands, read the tiny prints on the boxes, and dosages and what they each do! Back when the bf and I first got the LOOL (love of our lives), Nigel, we took him to Pet Food Express in Pinole to get the basics - food, treats, toys, etc. I don't know her name, but to this day the same gal who helped us always makes it a point to stop and give Nigel pets/kisses because she remembers when we brought him in that first time. I like coming here because the VIP pet services come here on Sunday's and this is where I take my husky to get all his shots. The lines can get long so I would suggest coming early if you're getting shots to your pet. I came here yesterday to give my dog a bath because he had fleas and pet food express have the big tubs where I can wash my husky and dry him after. The employees here are very friendly and always recognize Jacob (my husky) every time I come in and they give him treats. Friendly and fast service but they do not carry all the products that I would be interested in that I find at Petsmart. My cats are my children, and I would wager they are smarter than many children I have run across. That is why I shop here. Over the past 3 years, this place has been a staple for where I get my pets' food, supplies, flea treatments, liter and advice. I became a follower 10 years ago when I had a cat who was dying with kidney failure. They were so helpful to find food, she could tolerate and absorb. That trend has continued to this day when I find myself with a new kitten who has special dietary needs - high protein,NO starches/carbohydrates and high in Taurine. They suggested 3 and I bought all 3 for her to try - no worries, the 2 she didn't like, came right back for a full refund. Talk about quality products, outstanding customer service and knowledge... they have it all. As long as I live someplace with a Pet Food Express and have pets, I will be a customer. P.S. - I went back 2 weeks later, because a feral cat in my neighborhood gave birth to kittens and I found one abandoned in my garage. So here I am at 10am on a Saturday, looking for a bottle and formula - it's only about 10 days old or so. They find what I need and found it on sale for 1/2 off. Excellent customer service. One of the employees noticed that I was going back and forth between what cat food to buy and she asked if there was specific concern I had. She stuck around for at least 15 minutes explaining what food would be best for a cat with a sensitive tummy and helped me develop a plan. My 14 year old cat passed away a couple of weeks ago and I just happened to have a kitten drop into my life this week and he was so understanding and helpful. Great pet food store. They have a really friendly and knowledgeable staff. Everyone is extremely nice, always asking how our dogs are doing. Whenever we bring our dogs in, someone is immediately pampering them They love dogs and we love going to them. We have four dogs and feed them Candidae so we take advantage of the store deal: Buy three bags, get one free. Saves us about $40 which is nice. I used to be a PetSmart advocate, but now this place has won me over. Me and 'rents picked up a cat at ARF out in the 'Creek, and while we did buy a few things there and at Costco, I buy all the toys and treats here. The workers here know their stuff. Sure, if you're used to feeding your cat or dog junk from Wal-Mart or Luckys, they'll seem pricey - but they're reasonable for what they carry. And a big PLUS for me is that VIP comes by every Sunday with a vaccine clinic - perfect since the vet wants $50 for a feline leukemia shot, while VIP wants $15. read more

I started coming here when I got my dog, Timber, back in March of this year. Ever since the very first day I came in (with a rescued, scared, active little dog on my hands), Abrahm has been amazing. He helped me that day as I tried to hold onto that scared little baby, trying out different foods and treats and helping with collar and leash.
