I had been trimming my little dogs nails for about a year until I decided to come here a few months ago as I have gotten busier with the school semester and cutting her nails becomes a whole ordeal that can take me at least 30 minutes (I have no grooming experience!) My dog is quite sensitive to people touching her paws in general and I am ill-equipped with clippers and a bathtub, so I figured it'd be best to pay somebody to do it correctly with the proper equipment and started bringing her to petco grooming. It's always been an okay job, which is understandable considering her sensitivity as well as some of her nails being fully black, so I've never expected perfection in the least, just something to keep them shorter and more comfortable for her. My most recent visit I was quite disappointed though): I paid in full for a trim after handing her to them but when I got her back there were about four black nails left long "because they were too curly". For starters, I know for a fact I have trimmed as they were longer/curlier with a worse setup and gotten the job done, so I was finding it hard to understand how she would've been unable to with my dog strapped/standing/ with better angles?? There is hardly a curl, and it doesn't make sense that those would be significantly longer than the rest that we're able to be cut as I brought her here for the last trim! Second off, I wish I had been told they wouldn't do the full job before I paid in full! I could've gone elsewhere to get this done but now I'm going to have to pay double at the vet. As I was leaving they recommended I take her to the vet, which as mentioned I wish I would've known earlier. I am sad to be writing this review as I saw them to be a reliable place for a quick trim but figured others should know this probably isn't a good place to get your dogs nails trimmed if they are too long??? I incorrectly assumed this was where I should go (the groomer) to get my dogs nails trimmed (grooming) because they are too long. read more

ZERO stars. I'm being forced to put one star in order to post the review. I Just picked my dog up from her grooming appt. which took 4 HOURS (small 18 lb dog) and this is literally the worst grooming I've ever seen. Her coat is incredibly patchy and uneven all over her body and looks like a 2 year old with hand scissors could have done a better job. I wish I could remember the name of the groomer, as I would highly recommend they find a different career. Whatever you do, DO NOT let the incompetent groomers of Petco touch your dog. Absolutely horrible service, I will never use this company again and will recommend to every person I know to stay away. Honestly have been trying to get a hold of any dog trainer at this location to get at least some information about puppy classes and have been getting the run around. Called at 9:30am, person said someone would be in at 1:30. Called again at 2pm and no one is there still. Not a good sign if the trainer can't even show up to work on time in a non-traffic hour. I was on "hold" while said employee was trying to find someone for me to talk to and I could hear the managers talking about what I was asking about and finding excuses to tell me little to no information. It was awkward. I just wanted to take my dang puppy here to get some socialization but screw that, I'm just going to go to Petsmart in Mueller because their customer service is 1,000 times better. read more

Do not come to this place, awful service, they told me that I was not on time to my appointment when I was on time but they have a policy of one person is allowed to enter. I was behind a customer and had to wait to be attended. Once I was attended they said they gave my reservation to someone else when i was behind the person. Not happy at all. Had made this reservation two weeks in advance for someone to take my reservation. All they recommended was to book another appointment 1-2 weeks from today. Yeesh. I've been loyal to Petco for their rewards program and fairly good prices since I got my dog three years ago, and the rewards for a large bag of dog food are pretty good that when I'm out of town, I'll prefer Petco over other stores. Yet, it only took one call less than a minute to the grooming salon to make me avoid this location and reconsider visiting ever again. Having never brought my dog in for grooming, I had several questions about walk-in services vs. appointment services since they're not listed on their website and vary by location. The last time I tried to bring my pup in, I was encouraged to make an appointment (since I was interested in a bath) vs. only a nail trim today. Long story short, I was spoken to rather curtly with my questions on being a first time visitor with the words "that is a walk in service" repeated to me in the tone of an adult talking to a child. Isn't that what everyone wants, to be treated like an idiot over the phone? Could see right through the fake springy "thanks!' at the end of the call. No thanks. And gee, it took me 30 seconds right afterward to create an account online with Petsmart and see their whole list of offered services. Would suggest that you work on your customer service. This Petco is very convenient to those of us in Hyde Park, but good lord, finding someone to help you at this location is like walking down 6th street on a weekend night and not being disgusted by our shared humanity. I got a new puppy from the Humane Society and he was soooo shaggy. I made an appointment a week ahead of time to get him groomed for noon. I showed up a few minutes before noon on the scheduled day. Before I even said a word, the lady behind the counter started complaining that she already had ten dogs before mine and had no idea how they screwed her over so bad. She said she was the sub groomer and didn't mean to be crabby but they had really messed her up and she was going to have to stay hours later than she wanted to in order to finish them all. A minute later, while the lady was trying to pull up my dog's appointment, the regular employee named Shea who I made the appointment with face-to-face came in, and the sub groomer started giving her a hard time as well. It was really awkward. I finally had to ask, "Okay, so is it okay for me to leave him?" She told me it was going to be a few extra dollars because his fur was so matted, and they shouldn't have quoted me the lower price over the phone. I explained to her that I made the appointment in person with the dog a week earlier, but she didn't really get it. Regardless, I had to get him groomed, so I left him. He was ready a little before five. I had to call and beg Shea to have him ready by 5:30 because it was my wedding anniversary and we had dinner reservations. She promised she'd make it happen and even remembered to wish me a happy anniversary when I came to pick him up. She didn't put him back in his cage and was holding him. He was really happy with her. The sub groomer said he was "bitey" with her, but Shea said he was fine as long as she was near him while she groomed him. I probably won't go back. My friends say it can take a few hours to get a dog groomed, but five seems too long, since I know he was in a cage for the majority of it. Also, even if he was a little unruly during the grooming, they still should have done a better job on him, because there are uneven patches that are longer or really shorter. read more

This is my typical first stop in the Hancock Center...until I joined the gym. ANYway, I'm a member of PetCo PALS club, which entitles me to a free 11th bag of cat food with every ten that I buy. I haven't quite mastered the buying bigger bags so that I don't have to buy that often and save money, so I'm a relatively frequent visitor. I've never really had any issues with this location. The staff have been accomodating and helpful towards me. I usually head right to the cat stuff, then stop and look at the tortoises on the way out...each time telling myself that I'll save up for one...even though Mogwai would probably try to eat it. I asked about the recent recalls and was told that everything that they did have in stock was immediately pulled off of the shelves and replenished with non-tainted food. I'm sure the employee was tired of those questions (imagine now, though, since it's been going on for TOO DAMN LONG!!!), but she was still helpful. The sales table often has really good deals, my cats have countless toys. Also, shortly before Easter, I was asked if I'd like to make a donation...with the proceeds going to Animal Trustees of Austin! How could I say no, seeing as how I'm a volunteer there! Parking in the Hancock Center sucks...as mentioned in previous reviews, so I usually park in front of PetCo, then head to HEB after my cat food purchase! I'll continue to shop here for the convenience and the free 11th bag of kitty food! *EDIT* I just called this store to find out if they have pet carriers of a specific size to be carried onto the plane for my move to Seattle. The phone was answered right away and I was immediately transferred to someone on the floor who could help me. She answered my questions, then realized that they had just gotten a new carrier in and put me on hold so that she could grab it and give me the information. I'm not such a fan of being put on hold, but it was okay this time. Upon returning to the phone, she gave me the specific measurements, the brand name, and the price so I knoew what to look for. Then she offered to put one on hold for me, so that I could pick it up later! I declined, but I'll be headed that way tomorrow, perhaps. This was my first time taking my puppy to this location for a grooming. Upon checking in the service was great and Lance, his groomer, also did an amazing job. When checking in with Brandy and another associate they reviewed my animals coat, and decided he might need to be cut pretty short. We went over the options and prices. At the end she confirmed what services I wanted and price of $70. When I came to pick up my puppy, the bill was $100. The clerk explained to me that sometimes if it takes longer, they will add fees. This is understandable, however, a disclaimer was not given. When Brandy was reviewing his coat this morning, she should've explained the potential for extra cost due to time, it was the perfect time. It is the duty of the service provider to give an accurate assessment and estimate. Anytime there is a potential for extra expenses or work needing to be done the employer should advise allowing the customer to be aware and two to make sure they can afford it. No one likes a surprise fee. I would've happily paid, bad she provided me, the customer, with the information ahead. When I asked for a manger Dewayne came out, he said let me check with Brandy. Brandy came out extremely defensive and aggressive. She explained they did go over his coat, which she did and I confirmed. I responded and said but you didn't provide me with the information of the possibility of an extra charge. Each time I spoke, Brandy cut me off. Brandy responded with I don't want to argue I just want to resolve this. What she didn't realize is, that's exactly what she was doing. She has defensive listening, no care to listen to the customer and is thinking of responses as they speak. Brandy continued to repeat "its fine, I'll just add a red glad to the account" as if I'm some sort of criminal or insinuating I'm a scammer or someone who might do it again. That is extremely offensive. We ended the conversation as she was not capable of an adult and professional conversation. Afterwards I was checking out and Brandy was shouting in the lobby to her manager. It's clear she may be a dog person, but she's not a people person and is not capable of complex issues. Dewayne, please do not call her to speak to customers, as she will only make matters worse. read more

Well I haven't bought much here, but I bought a gazillion amounts of Betta fish here. Yes, Betta is spelled with TWO t's! WHOA. The fish guy actually knows what he's talking about and knows of all the types of fish. Whew, at least he's not stupid like the the Walmart Fish people (back when they HAD fish). Petco just reminds me of the general pet store. Well, this Petco doesn't seem to carry all that many animals, but it sure carries a lot of accessories and food and etc. read more

Here's the deal. Superstores should be cheap. Especially specialty superstores. I should be able to buy the same dog food cheaper here than I can next door at HEB or down the street at Target, right? Wrong. A can of Alpo costs $.54 at HEB. The same can costs $.80 next door at Petco. I realize it's only a $.26 difference, but that's a 33% markup for a $.54 can of dog food! Here's the thing, though. If you're like me, your dog is too good for Alpo. You need some fancy-ass, Nutra-Organic-No-Filler-Super-Duper food for your darling dog. And HEB doesn't carry it. Neither does Target. Petco is not a bad place to go if you need this kind of thing, although it doesn't carry some of the more unusual brands that someplace like Bark 'n' Purr carries. If you want a somewhat more mainstream brand like Nutro, NutroMax, or one of the similar lines, you can save maybe $.20-$.25 a can shopping here as opposed to Bark 'n' Purr. Whether that is worth it to you as opposed to supporting a locally-owned business is a choice for each person to make themselves. I will say Petco deserves props for allowing their store to be used by various nonprofit organizations to show their adoptable pets (and for not carrying pets from puppy mills and the like). It's a great way to get these pets out in front of people who might be interested in adopting them, and from what I hear, it works pretty well. read more

I usually go to Petsmart on 51st & Mueller (which is amazing, btw) but I decided to try out Petco since it's in such a convenient location. I've now decided, based on the experience of myself and the other reviewers, that this convenience of location is the one thing keeping this Petco alive. It feels like you're walking in a dirty ghost town - both because everything FEELS dirty, and because there's no staff around. Neither of these things has to be the case - for instance, Petsmart is always super clean and shiny inside, and there's always friendly staff around to say hi and help out! Based on the general look of the store, I was expecting very cheap prices. As this was not the case, I was less than impressed. read more

I get allergic cats" limited ingredient" Natural Instincts here because with the Pals card there's usually a discount - I'm all about a discount when a bag is $20 +! It's also a plus that they have kitty adoption here & sometimes Pets Alive is right outside the door with all the adorable adoptable's for the ooo'ing, awww-ing, petting (wash your hands first!), and hopefully adopting. Yes, this store is a bit pricey but I love that they have SO much in stock for dogs& cats.They have live animals (fish,turtles,gerbils,hamsters,ferrets, etc.). and a few employees who are super knowledgeable- you KNOW who you are :) I hear the attached grooming area is excellent but can't say as I've not used them yet. If you go, at the very least check out the sale bins to the far right . I recently got Greenies for $2 (a 6 pack of dog chews), high quality canned cat food for .10 each, a bunch of next years Halloween costumes (yes, I torture my animals) for $2 & $3 each. It wasn't :( Also, the A/C machine near the cat section is so loud and old it's horrifying. There wasn't any staff on the floor, but when I waiting in line and asked the kid at the check out desk if they might have what I needed in stock somewhere else, he was very nice and told me when the next shipment would be coming in. I will definitely not be going back!! I paid $100 for my dog (a golden retriever) to be groomed and it, no joke, looks like they just ran a brush through her hair. They took absolutely no hair off. good GOD. Their automatic doors open SO SLOWLY and it just kills me. However, conveniently located, maybe a good deal if you can keep up with the coupons they send you, usually has what I'm looking for. Their refillable kitty litter may not be the best deal, but I will say that I'm very happy to have been using the same bucket for well over a year now. Is it reducing plastic waste? Probably not, but let me be smug, plz. Most of their staff is pretty ok. I love the deaf lady!t Every once in a while you get that weird employee, but that seems to be the case everywhere. Oh, and one time when I was shopping here, I witnessed one of the craziest verbal arguments ever! This girl dropped her mom's purse, and the contents of said purse went everywhere. And it's urinating distance away from my owner's bus-stop, so she has no excuse not to get me my food and feed me in front of the other two cats, Rezi and Sasami, while they glare at me in jealousy. This retailer is absolutely fantastic; however Petco On-line is simply horrible. This store does not have the prescription cat food I desperately need. That's why I give Petco 1 star, not for this retailer and since I can't rate Petco.com I had to post to this store, which I shop at regularly. DO NOT USE PETCO.COM TO ORDER ON-LINE, USE CHEWY.COM OR PETSMART. My vet faxed the prescription over to Petco.com, there was a mix-up they never got the prescription, the customer service representative is over seas with very bad English and with little authority to help me sort out the mix up with the prescription order. She said I had to call the pharmacy at petco, but would not give me the phone number and said they were closed on Saturdays. How does I large corporation like Petco not have pharmacy open on Saturday? Terrible....simply a huge waste of time. Any way my order was canceled, because they claim they never got the prescription. I called my vet, they said they sent it over. This drama went on for 6 days, back and forth. Then without calling me or emailing me they simply canceled my order without an explanation, again little authority to help me, or give me information etc. They simply can't help people with specialized orders. They use foreigners, that get paid slave labor wages probably, that speak with "English" as a second language skills. I called at least 5 times and finally lost my patience, they did not care, and I could hear in their voice, terrible terrible on-line customer service. Don't waste your time. read more

We called ahead to get see if they accepted walk ins and they do. Darlene assisted us, and she was super nice! She signed us up for the pet pal rewards so we could get a discount the next time we come into the store. It also gave us a free bag of dog food which was nice! We only got a nail trim, but she was very quick. She was very sweet to our dog, and we didn't need to wait at all. Nail trim was only $10, which is great because our vet charges $16. She also gave our dog a treat after. For our first experience with the grooming, I was very impressed. I will definitely bring him back! read more

I'd rather drive/ride further to Pet Smart over at the Mueller Development on 51st, or Tomlinson's just off Airport at 49 1/2. This Petco usually has old, dead crickets or worms for sale. They also have a poor selection of reptiles. There normally aren't enough employees working there. Hope they can turn it around, because it's a very convenient location, right next to HEB and Freebirds. I did find a good deal on reptile starter kits though... if you're looking for a need gift idea. Good luck finding an animal to put in the terrarium! read more

My dog recently went to get groomed. The haircut was terrible. He got clipper burn and now I have to take him to the vet because it's so irritated. They took 5 hours when they said he would be ready in 3. They were really nice but unfortunately I did not like his haircut, nor the fact that he got a clipper burn in his groin area. read more

The aquarium specialist was amazing! If you are looking to start an aquarium and aren't sure how to go about it, ask for Sean. He is extremely knowledgeable about the fish, what they require, and what they go best with. I got a 10 gallon tank kit recently and wasn't sure which fish were right for the tank. He walked me through the types of fish, and he paired me with fish that go well in a 10 G tank and behave well with other fish. You can tell he really cares about the fish that he's selling. Definitely reaching out to Sean in the future for any aquarium advice or concerns. read more

When my dogs groomer just up and left one day we decided to try Petco. When I arrived I was greeted by Brandi. She explained everything that would go on and was so friendly. She thoroughly explained what treatments they offered and welcomed my dog like it was her own. She saw the concern in my face of leaving my baby at a new place and offered to call me as soon as she was ready. When I arrived my dog was fresh and clean and groomed perfectly. I'm so happy with the work Brandi did on my baby girl. I definitely recommend them. read more

I had an appointment for 2:15 Saturday 12/12/2020. I received a phone call this morning at 8:15 asking me to bring in my pet due to a cancellation. Once at the store I had to wait outside for at least 20min in the cold and then once inside Brandie proceeded to read me info from my dogs file about what happen in October 2019, to make a long story short they refused to groom my dog today, but she has been there at least four or five times since 2019. So why are you just now telling me about the problems with grooming my dog. And yes I was was extremely upset. She would not read me other information that the employees had put in my pets file. There is a reason that you take your pet to the groomers in the first place. read more

The grooming at this location depends 100% on groomer. Unless you specifically ask the groomer to include everything in the package they only do the bare minimum. So unless you want to mention everything that is suppose to be included and then follow up to ensure it was done, don't bother to pay more. I also additionally paid for buffing but neither of my dogs nails were buffed, anal sacs not emptied. I am very disappointed with Groomer Britany and am sad I actually paid for what I could have done in 10 min at home. read more
