Never had a bad experience here! It's a smaller Petco but I've always been able to buy what I need for my cat, whether it's food, treats, or litter. The employees who work here have always been so nice and occasionally they'll have displays/samples for dogs, which I like. Also major props to them for actually answering the phone and letting me return an unused bag of cat food for store credit! Unfortunately my cat has had to switch his diet to a prescription but this Petco was able to take the return and give us a gift card. We were already past the deadline for a cash refund, but I didn't mind since we always spend money here and I was just grateful we could put that credit towards our other pet needs. If I could leave negative 10 stars I would. Christa is the manager. Victor is an employee who is high that wears a shirt that's half pulled on. I was greeted by Victor saying my shirt doesn't fit. My two-year-old daughter and I came to buy goldfish for Persian new year. I chose my fish and then was asked about the fish tank. I told him we have a small fish tank at home and I see that the bigger fish tanks are on sale and I will be back to purchase a bigger one later. He paused for five minutes and then told me he would not sell me goldfish. I reassured him that I will take great care of the goldfish and that a bigger tank will be purchased this afternoon, the goldfish was maybe 3 cm long. The tank that I owned was 2 inches smaller than the tank he wanted me to purchase. My two-year-old was having a tantrum at this point and it's also Persian new year, the reason I needed the goldfish. Once Christa came over, it took Victor over 10 minutes to explain the situation and I left the store. I believe this is my first negative review to leave, but I've never experienced something as mind blowing as this. read more

This was the worst experience ever!!! I highly recommend avoiding this place altogether. I had an appointment a week in advance for my cat, who has a bit of trouble breathing and makes a snoring sound when he breathes. After speaking with the staff and being directed to the vet clinic, the older vet informed us to wait outside. After wasting about 5 to 10 minutes, we were told that my cat couldn't get his microchip. To make matters worse, she called him aggressive, even though she had never seen him out of the carrier. I assumed it was because of his breathing noise, but we informed the other vet clinic lady that he makes the sound because he's sick. Needless to say, we're not returning. I hope this helps others save time from being turned away. read more

If I could give Petco grooming -100 stars I would. I grew up with a poodle for 14 years (and she obviously required a lot of grooming as that breed) and have had my senior dog for 15 years, so I have been through a lot of different grooming experiences, and the sitaution that we went through yesterday was the worst experience I have ever had or could have dreamed of. Our border collie mix has been groomed at different Petco's across the country most of her life, and has been going to this particular location for a couple of years now. While we have never been particularly happy with the haircuts she has received, they have never been detrimental, but yesterday was just unreal. They literally completely shaved her entire body. When I arrived to pick her up, I was in such shock and speechless. My response was something like "Oh my god....what did you do? She looks awful...." and I had tears in my eyes. The woman standing in the office waiting for her dog to be brought out, eyes widened and she just stood there with her hand over her mouth as our dog looked so awful and it was so obviously clear that wasn't what we asked for. The groomer responded, "That's what she had done last time though." I responded, "Ummmm, that is not accurate. She has never been shaved a day in her life." He then proceeded to tell me that, "Well then, there must have been a typo in her file. Hehe. You can get a refund though and it will grow back." The fact that he started to giggle pushed me over the edge and I had to walk out. Once my fiance got home, he was very angry, as I expected, and we went back to Petco and he asked to speak to a manager. They brought us back to the grooming area and the same groomer who I had spoken to earlier claimed he was the manager, which based on the way he handled the sitaution, I don't believe to be true. I beleive he may have been the lead on duty, but certaintly not the manager, otherwise, Petco needs to send every employee to business school becuase I have never seen a manager of a large super chain act that way. My fiance asked to see the supposed file that stated that she had been shaved before, and the groomer opened the computer, searched around for a minute, then looked up and claimed that he was uanble to see past histroy since he had updated the information to the current visit. That is such a load of BS, there is zero chance that the history disappears. He just realized he messed up and didn't want to show us our dog's file. Then to save his ass further, he had the audacity to point to me and tell my fiance that "I asked and she told me to do it at check-in". Are kidding me? Why the F would I tell you completely butcher my dog? Just wow.....zero accountability. He also then tried to blame the other groomer by stating that it was only his 2nd week. First of all, we can see on the app that this original guy did in fact, work on our dog, and even so, I dont' care if it's your first day, you verify the work that is being done when you take a straight razor to a dog with long hair! I have to believe that if someone brought in a Golden Retriever and asked for it to be shaved completely, the groomer would raise an eyebrow and triple check that was accurate as that's not normal. A collie is no different. Shaving completely is not a common cut for that type of dog. Like many other long haired dogs, our dog's breed uses their undercoat to regulate body temperature, her skin has never seen the sun, and we are going camping this weekend, AND she's a senior! Seriously....how dare you. To top it all off, we are getting married in exactly 3 months and she is in the wedding. These are photos that we cannot redo in a year when her hair is fully back to normal, assuing it does grow back to what is was. In 3 months she will have some hair, but it won't be her long, shiny, beautiful black coat. We are so incredibly furious that this incompetent, unempathetic human ruined our wedding photos with our dogs. At the end of the day, we would have been angry no matter what, but it's the reaction that he gave. Blaming us, acting non chalant, continueing to just talk about how we can just get the money back (it's not the effing $ that we care about dude), giggling, acting like we were overreacting. It's completely unacceptable and he needs to be hugely reprimanded, if not fired. You have lost our business with all of our dogs completely (grooming, food, and everything else) and of course we have posted all over social media as well, and you have also lost business from many of our friends across the country who regularly use Petco and have stated that there's no way they will be bringing their pet back. Also, that groomer's name is Joshua and this happened on 6/7/2023 at the Clairemont Mesa location in San Diego. Ezra is extremely kind to me and my dog and gives her a thorough grooming every time. My dog can be a bit anxious but she's always happy to be with Ezra and the team. Last night (8/14/24) I had arrived around 6:30-7pm to pick up a couple of Doordash orders. I didn't get a chance to screenshot this, but "NO NEED TO WAIT IN LINE, go straight to the cashier" are the specific instructions given to us doordash drivers on our end. While all 3 cashiers were busy with a long line of guests, I waited in front of the store for a few min before I eventually decided to walk up to one of them (Karen) and informed her that I was picking up from Doordash. She kindly said ok, let me finish ringing up a couple more people first. Moments later, the cashier behind her (tall, early 20's white male with dark hair in the lane closest to the wall with the order pickup shelves) rudely demanded that I get in the back in the line with everyone else when he saw me waiting outside of Karen's lane. I told him I working for doordash and picking up an order, to which he responded "it's the same thing for you, just go to the back of the line with everyone else." In response to this, Karen kindly assured me that she would help me with my pickup orders after she had tended to other guests. Which meant I stayed with her and didn't go to the back of the line. The male cashier proceeded to loudly alert the next guest in line saying "I can help the next guest PATIENTLY waiting in line please!! " with a passive aggressive/arrogant demeanor. Purposely causing a scene in an attempt to humiliate me, as some guests starting laughing quietly. I think solidified communication between Doordash and Petco on order pickup rules would be great. On top of that, maybe some re-training on customer service for this mentioned employee and how he can better handle stress on the job. PLEASE, DO NOT GET YOUR DOGS GROOMED HERE! The groomers here are horrible and they don't handle the dogs with care. No wonder they always have opening to get your dog groomed; because they are the worst. Based on all the other reviews on Yelp, it shows that this place has a terrible grooming service. Literally every bad review I'm reading, it has to do with grooming. My dog had an incident here and I was yelled at by a groomer named Alexis and she escalated the situation and was very dramatic. She didn't try to get use to my dog and instead, ignored the fact that my dog was scared and shaking, but still went to his face and he bit her on her palm. I was getting yelled at by Alexis saying I need to be a better dog trainer even though my sweet pup has never bit anyone before. I talked to the manager on the phone and I've never felt so disrespected. She kept on interrupting me and she was very rude. I was trying to have a good conversation with her and she ultimately hang up on me. Again, do not get your dog groomed here. The groomers and managers are very unprofessional, rude, and they don't do their job correctly. I've never talked to a manger that had the worst attitude, what a big B. Zero stars for this location, don't get your dog groomed here. Shut this grooming location down, it's ruined by a bunch of clowns. The store itself is messy, unorganized, and you don't see see a lot of employees helping. Called the manager and he said, "I have a shepherd and they always shed". I have had them for 15 years and never had one shed like this after grooming. So, I replied, "Well you probably get it groomed at Petco." My suspicion is they did not use a real deshedding tool but rather a normal brush. This review is for Ezra who works in the grooming department. I brought my dog in for a nail trim and buffing ($20) and he told me the best deal would be to get a Mini Make "Rover" which cost $25 and included a nail trim and buffing, ear cleaning, paw balm and scented spritz, and teeth-brushing. He was very patient with my dog and took his time to clip the nails which can be the most stressful part for a dog. When I came to pick my dog up he wasn't stressed from the grooming and he looked great. Ezra even gave us a military discount. He did a fantastic job and I can't recommend him enough! read more

Let me start off by saying we had taken 9 months to take this dog crate back to Petco. It was still brand new in the package and my wife had gotten it online and then we just didn't get around to returning it sooner. That said Petco still carries the product and had 2 of the same in the store. We spoke to the cashier who was pleasant but let us know they couldn't take the product back due to their 90 day return policy. I asked if they could make an exception and possibly give us store credit since they still currently carry and sell the same crate we were trying to return. She said she would go find the manager to see if it was possible. The manager Tyler came out with an attitude from the beginning and said I heard you wanted to speak to me, as if the employee hadn't filled him in on the situation. He was not friendly, he was standoffish having already made his decision regarding our situation, and then pointed out their return policy saying it's clearly stated on this little tiny fine print piece of paper on the counter. I understand store policy and I also understand working with customers to get their business in the door. He was not helpful whatsoever and his attitude was awful. We will never shop at Petco again. Their management is not only unfriendly but they are also rude. I called their PB store and asked the same question wondering if maybe the manager there would have a little more leniency and better customer service than the Clairemont manager. She said no we cannot take it back regardless of whether it's a current product. Again we had bought this product online and maybe there was some fine print as far as returns and I understand that it was 9 months later. She then said to me well if you can't return something in 2 months, come on. It was condescending. I now know that Petco management has a horrible training platform and there's no wonder people don't want to shop there. We will take our business to PetSmart. We scheduled an appointment here for 1040AM on a Saturday for a rabies booster. Got a bunch of texts to confirm and also one that instructed to text when we arrived and to wait in the car. We arrived at 1025 and texted as instructed but didn't hear back so at 1035 I just called to inquire and the staff who answered said to just come on in. When we went in, there was a group of 3 staff taking in pups. We were 2nd in line and after relaying basic info to the staff (address, previous vaccination), our pup was weighed and sent down the aisle for the vaccination. Vaccination was in a small room with 3 very friendly staff and it was one and done in under 1 minute. Total cost was $35 for the vacc but of course we got our boy a bone for an additional $10. Overall this was sort of a meh experience ... they could be more organized; we were waiting around blocking aisles to get our dog weighed and there were other families with pups waiting. Also typically vaccine boosters are like $25 so there is a bit of a mark up (our fault for letting it creep up on us and not going to our typical vet). Location is easy to find and parking is plentiful. read more

Absolutely horrible. The only reason I went there is the APP, and more specifically the "Nutrition Perk". I buy $68 bags of dog food. If you buy 7 bags the 8th is free. I bought 2 and they didn't show up on the app. I was told they take a bit to show up. I bought a 3rd and it didn't show up either. The employee said it was "a glitch more than likely" and to "just get ahold of customer service and they will fix it". I spent hours trying to get these people to comprehend the situation. There was 3 times I was told they were sending the issue to IT guys in the beginning and that it would be resolved within 24 to 48 hours. I got ahold of them for a 4th and 5th time and was told I had 2 accounts and that they would delete 1 of them and fix it within 24 to 48 hours. Then I bought a 4th bag and even that one didn't show up. The one thing they did accomplish was deleting the account that I wanted to keep instead of the one that was supposedly causing all the issues. After a 6th conversation I was hung up on and when they looked it up afterward they checked out the wrong account and sent me an email saying that I hadn't signed up for the Perk and that it had been deleted. So apparently they didn't listen to a word I said during the conversation. After a 7th conversation I thought I finally got through and was told they were putting the 4 bags on my account finally and that they would show up within 24 to 48 hours. Over a week has went by and an 8th conversation with another useless person telling me they will send it to the IT guys and guess what, to give it 24 to 48 hours. Deja Vu. Of course there wasn't even any record of the last person saying they would put the 4 bags onto my account. I have lost all faith in this situtationsituation. I need to find a place i feel more comfortable giving my business to. Pet co is expensive and the only reason I even buy from there is the "Nutrition Perk". What kind of Customer Service has no Supervisors to talk to with the ability to fix these situations? I have easily spent at least 8 hours talking to more than likely an Aritificial Intelligence (What a contradiction) bot. I am stubborn and should have moved on long ago. My time spent is much more valuable than the 1 bag of food, not to mention the frustration from their incompetence. Look at the pic. This is not the Petco store location in which I write about. But my complaint spans the entire egregious organization. I have been telling all my friends what a horrible experience I recently had at Petco...and the worse part is they demonized me, at, what they tell me, at the corporate level. I have been shopping at Petco for a very long time, since I've been around a long time. I shopped at my local Petco when they were at another location and followed them. I learned, through the college-of-hard-knocks, that the crickets Petco sells are inferior to those sold at other pet supply companies. I would buy crickets, take them home and more would die than eaten. I complained to the then manager E**c (his encrypted name) who would give me a lot more than I purchased...sometimes he would simply give me crickets. Others would do likewise.... but I would still have dead or dying crickets. One day an employee of Petco, who had in the past given me xtra crickets, seemed to be counting the crickets in the plastic bag. (HOW IN THE HELL CAN YOU COUNT HOPPING CRICKETS?) I complained and she suddenly spazzed out at me... quite literally had a sever meltdown. I walked away from her looking for E**c...who told me when I found him to see him in the future regarding buying crickets. I left the store and went to another smaller pet supply company. The crickets I purchased at this smaller store have bred and lasted me for nearly a year. I have NOT had to buy crickets since. So, the Petco employee's melt down was a godsend to my pocketbook. It appears that Petco does not carry hardy crickets...as a matter of fact this was confirmed to me by E**c when I saw him next. He told me that there are hardier crickets. When I saw the spazzing employee I thanked her and told her how she saved me a lot of money and I suggested that she do more spazzing so that others can save money as well. Well, the next time I went to Petco to return an item (mealy bird food), I was met by a man I had never met. He smiled at me and told me that I was no longer allowed in their store. Why? He told me that there had been many complaints about me being 'rude' to employees. Rude? I have never been rude to anyone! I wanted to defend myself but Petco would not allow me to do so. They would not tell me anything! They told me that this had been brought to their corporate level. I will admit that I was so upset over the fact that I was deemed rude and that I was not able to defend myself, that I, at that time only, became VERY disagreeable--stemming from shock and frustration. I tried to call their corporate office. Well, here is another reason to boycott Petco. Unlike ZooMed, Petco is another egregious company who has outsourced their CS department offshore. Those folks over the pond do not want to help U.S. citizens... and try to get them to connect you to an American is IMPOSSIBLE! So, what does that tell you about Petco? (ZooMed, btw, is a great company with AMERICAN CS!!!!!) Needless to say, it appears that Petco employees can be nasty to you, can spaz out at you and have a meltdown and YOU WILL BE DEMONIZED. I recommend buying from a friendly, LOCAL pet supply company...an AMERICAN pet supply company. Too bad that ZooMed does not sell direct :( read more

This was my first experience at Petco grooming and will definitely be my last. I had an appointment scheduled for 1215 and as I walked in with my two kids, an infant and a toddler , plus my dog, i got two blank stares from two groomers. A few minutes later one gentleman said that I must be at the wrong location and I said I have an appointment set for Maxamillion. The other gentleman said that they tried calling me because the had to cancel my appointment but they didn't have my number on file. I drove from Mira Mesa with my 2 kids so it would've been nice if they canceled ahead of time even through the online system or even emailed me since my email was on file. I asked why my appointment got canceled and he said that one of the groomers called out sick and they were short staffed. Then I asked how do they decide which animals get canceled and he said everyone scheduled under "her" appointments got canceled. Then he said that I scheduled only a bath online and the other groomer doesn't just do baths, but clearly I scheduled a bath and a haircut. I asked if they can look up other locations that can fit me in and he said that they don't do that. It's just frustrating that they couldn't reach me before I drove there and then kept telling me these excuses when the facts are in my email confirmation. Afterwards, i went into the store and asked for the contact information for the grooming manager and I was told it's "Ezra, who's in the grooming area working right now" and as you can see In my email he was the groomer my dog was scheduled with. read more

A majority of the store looks the same, architecture-wise, but much more organized and CLEAN feeling now. They have shifted some areas around, and created this fancy "healthy living naturally" section in the middle with attractive laminate flooring (which I guess was always there but really stands out now). Though most of the remodel love has been given to dogs, cats have a lil aisel as well with some fun new la dee da options. More expensive, of course, but how could i resist buying my lil guy some fancy new slop: Venison & Green Pea Duck & green pea Organic turkey, brown rice & chicken Grain free chicken and beef formulas Chicken with avocado oil and omega 3's pretty awesome. and like i said, the dog section is uber-impressive with lots of organic and healthy options (took lots of pics for you all!). i do wish they would create better "habitats" for the cat adoption area, though. They moved them from the corner in the front to the area within the glass doors half way down. but still just stacked cages :( *edit: ive been informed the new cat area involves "cage free" time each day with Rescue House volunteers and interaction with customers. i will try to check it out and report back with commentary and photos! read more

Store: Love the actual store and super sweet employees in the store area! For grooming: We have been to many places and have never had an experience like this. We were told it would have over 3 hours. Our dog is a short haired lab. There was no way I was leaving my dog there for that long. All I could hear was 4 or more dogs crying in crates non stop. Groomer was rough and unwelcoming and I felt so uncomfortable and so did my dog. We cancelled our appointment and changed to just nail buff. We left afterwards and felt so uncomfortable with the whole situation and groomer. Go some where else for grooming. read more

Came in to get food for my cat the other day and it seemed like there were no employees working in the store. The store was also very messy compared to other petcos I've been to. Passed by a couple of employees and none of them acknowledged me and were no help when I asked for assistance looking for food. I spoke with a woman named Lori and she was very rude and did not make me feel comfortable shopping in the store. I will not return to this location. Horrible store. read more

Manager needs diversity and customer service training! I went in with two of my kids to learn about caring for a guinea pig. When I asked for a guinea pig guru, I was told "Liz" was the person. My child who has autism (he's 10 years old) was pacing back and forth, bouncing and making the sounds he can't help but make. Even with a mask on, I could read the look of apprehension/irritation in her face when Liz saw him. We proceeded to the guinea pig cages. On the way there, Liz asked my 11-year-old if the guinea pig would be kept away from "bouncing," pointing at my son who was still pacing/jumping up and down. She explained that bouncing could break the guinea pig's back. I was put off at this point but still wanted my 11-year-old to get to hear about the guinea pigs. Meanwhile, my son with autism was continuing to pace around, not hurting or touching anything. He got a little too close to Liz (behind her and he was wearing a mask). Instead of asking him nicely for more space or even saying hello to him (heaven forbid), she flicked her hand backward at him while sternly saying "no! no!" at the same time that I was telling him to come back by me. It was clear that Liz is more of an animal person and less of a people person. She was inconsiderate, disrespectful, and needlessly unkind in the way she interacted with us, particularly my son with autism. Maybe she just doesn't like kids, but she certainly has no understanding of ASD or people with disabilities. I felt angry and humiliated when I left the store. I was so upset that I went back into the store to speak to a manager. When the employee seemed apprehensive at my request I quickly added, "anyone not named Liz." She said that Liz was the only manager there at the time. And I said, "Well, that is who I need to talk to someone about." As I was about to post my review, I looked to the right and found a similar review from Jessika D. on 5/19/2021 about a women who "was rude and should go to a training of how to speak to people- especially children." Got in line to purchase a lot of dog food, treats, etc. The cashier finished with a customer and then was on the phone probably answering some questions for a call-in customer. I didn't want to be rude and so I wanted back in the line on the social-distancing dot. "Alena" while still on the phone, starting frantically waving to me to come up to the register. I followed her urging and put my things down. She was now finished with the phone and said "phone number?". I gave it and she rang up my things. I pushed my card in the slot and the whole thing was over after she handed me my receipt. No "hi, how are you", "hello", "goodbye", "thank you", nothing. I think that they need to train some of their people better. Alena was the name on the receipt, not sure if that's who was really there. read more
