I go out of my way to shop at this Petco because they have a large inventory, unlike some of the other pet shops in South San Jose that have lots of empty shelves. I particularly like to shop for my cat here because they have lots of different toys and treats. Tonight I went there to buy a scratching post and they had one similar to what I was looking for. Keep an eye on your emails for occasional 20%-off discounts. *Store is quite large and has a lot of stuff *Discount bins at the front *Free shipping on orders of $35+ from their website--including litter! The UPS guy will hate you, but fuck it, eh? *Prices are very competitive with Unca Jeff, and cheaper if you include the discount(s). *Low-cost vaccine clinic thru their Vetco by Petco where you can actually make an appointment. *If you can afford it, you should look into getting their yearly Vital Care Premier™ membership at $24/month or $240/year. It's hardly instant and I've heard some people having other issues with it like stuff not getting delivered and getting double-charged. *They don't allow you to double-stack your savings. In other words, you can't do a 10%-off on pickup of some food and then get your 10% premiere savings on top of that. Normally this isn't a big deal, but if you're ordering litter for pickup the app will automatically default to the 10%off on pickup, instead of the 20%off--so the workaround is to do multiple orders at less than $50 so that pickup discount of 10% doesn't kick in, savvy? It's annoying but it is what it is. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The Ugly: *Their mobile app is really horribly done. Vetco Vaccination Clinic review. I know they're not necessarily affiliated, but I will not be using this for vaccines again. I've been able to stay with my pets at every other Vetco. My dog can be nervous, which is in his chart, but never had a problem. They would not let me stay with him, insisted he needed to be muzzled to do an exam. Funny that they did an an exam and two vaccines in less than a minute. As a vet tech, I know the timing is impossible for even a basic exam. I think the kicker was the excuse being they are new and aren't fear free, which should not be an excuse. I'll be avoiding this Vetco vax clinic. Plenty of others. read more

Looking for the right collar for our kitten i drove to Petco on Meridian and started looking for options. Issac helped me with a few options after which he started looking up for a particular type online and it seemed to be available in the store. We started looking for it in all the places and then came in Brent who took us to the right spot and it was right in our front of our eyes though we still couldn't locate it. He noted the SKU and went to the back and came back with Donney and he showed us location to the item and it was right in front of us. While Brent and Donney helped with the search process, Issac definitley helped with the search and as well with the checkout process as i grabbed a few treats as well along the way for our cats. This review is specifically for the GROOMING STAFF. They are generally friendly and do a decent job; however, I've found them to be quick to turn away pets, often citing being "too busy," which gives the impression they are trying to limit their workload. I've been taking my pet here for years and have recently come across this issue along with overhearing complaints from other customers while waiting for my pet to be seen. They also rarely answer the phone, and the app is very frustrating to use for making or canceling appointments. Unfortunately, Vic and Brighton are no longer there, and they were excellent at their jobs. It seems that Sarah has taken over. While I have no doubt that she likes animals, I'm not sure grooming is the right fit for her. She appears to frequently turn away pets for a variety of reasons, including non-contagious dermatitis--even when veterinary paperwork is provided--which makes me wonder if she may simply be uncomfortable or grossed out by certain skin conditions. I will be looking elsewhere for basic grooming needs which include nail trims and brushing. read more

I really like this Petco as it has a good selection of quality cat food for my cats. They are such persnickety cats regarding their food. They do not like having to eat their wet food if the can is opened the day before. So I have to toss about 1/2 a can of the 5.5 oz Nulo Duck away. Also, 1 of the kitties have a chicken allergy so they can only have rabbit or duck. So I was on the hunt for 3oz cans so they can finish in 1 day. Tried about a dozen different brands and 1 kitty likes 2 of the brands while the other was okay with 4. We lucked out this time as last time I went through this with them they only liked 1 out of a dozen. The winners are Orijen duck, blue Buffalo duck, merrick duck and Insrinct duck. The current one they like is Nulo Duck. They refused all others with much disdain. Really happy that there's a Petco that carries so many different brands in small portion sizes. I've had multiple inconveniences with them, one of them being a clinician who stated the claim my dog tried to 'bite her', then my dog strangely developed symptoms of collapsing trachea the next day (she's young, doesn't bark, has never bitten a vet or ANYONE before) Coincidental? idk. I've seen other locations give injections in front of you, why is this location using another room for a quick- less than 5 minute appt. If a problem or issue occurs, it seems like they don't know how to handle it. One vet said my dog needed a booster and made the appt. for me, and when i got there, the front desk person said my dog is up to date and sent me home- confusing and Better off going somewhere else. read more

I was in the market for a new fish tank for my large turtles, and in need of assistance. The extremely nice lady at the register called for assistance immediately. We wait less than 8 min for assistance and Brett arrived. Brett was kind, knowledgeable regarding my red ear sliders needs. All his recommendations were taken in account and the 60 gallon recommended was chosen. Now this is the part that made my shopping experience with Petco on Meridian in San Jose so memorable. Brett assisted us from beginning to end and made sure that 60 gallon was secured in my daughter's car. The customer service attention provided was magnificent. There was a time where I had no loyalty among pet shops, but that has changed because of Brett and his professionalism with a hint of who he is and that is a magnificent person who cares about Petco customers and their pets needs. The store and inside the store people are great, but their coordination with Doordash is a major issue whenever DoorDash delivers the wrong thing. This particular store said they had nothing to do with it. However, it was ordered from the Petco website if you ever have a problem with that Delivery just note that you need to call the main Petco corporate number not the local store. Plaza is a bit run down but you will have no issues with parking here. Store is very clean, bright and organized. Fully stocked compared to most other petcos. Might even be the biggest store in the Silicon Valley. Aquatics needs some help, tanks are filthy with algae and dead fishes. They do have the best sized feeder gold fishes here though compared to any other petcos. Besides that, their aquatics are below average. I originally bought an item at the blossom hill location, my receipt ink was not fully legible due to their printer running out of ink. I was in the area so I did the return here. The manager (Ashley) and an employee couldn't scan the barcode due to legibility. I told her, why not "type in the bar code if you can't scan it?" (I used to work retail so I know the process pretty well, the systems are nearly all identical one way or another). Ashley (manager) said her system won't allow that and that I would have to go back to the blossom hill location if I wanted a refund back on my card. I drove to the blossom hill location, the employees here also couldn't scan the receipt due to the same issue. So they instead TYPED IN THE NUMBER and BAM, it worked. Five minutes in and out Wasted my time to send me to another store when store manager Ashley could have at least tried to type it in the receipt number rather than assuming she can only scan it. read more

This Petco is in an older location. They have everything I need when we go. I have 17 various lizards from around the world and their care to me is top notch. When I go to the stores the animal information or the supplies too meet the needs of various species. It's definitely not ok for inexperienced staff to talk about these lizards like they know the care. It's how they die. They are getting slightly better about not sell to people who are making impulse purchases but the staff should be versed in the proper care of each individual species. Please do better petco on staff training. It's not their fault it's yours. read more

Ren is an excellent groomer. I have an older anxious dog who normally hates grooming but had a great time with Ren. She spoke very softly to him and told me that he needed to take a few small breaks and even got a calming head massage! Usually he cannot complete haircut because he is too nervous and fidgety but this time he got a full haircut and bath! I also have a pomeranian with dermatitis, he is sensitive to oatmeal shampoo, Ren recommended some antifungal products to help his itchiness. Ren is absolutely a talented and caring groomer. Sad service. We were in there as a family shopping and wanted to surprise our daughter with a hamster and supplies. Spent a good hour and had about $150 worth in our cart. While we were looking around, our daughter wanted to write the team a "thank you" note at the table they had set up. She thought it was a nice gesture since the store had no one in it. As she was writing an employee rudely told her she should not be messing around at that table and the supplies. The employee then remained standing next to my daughter and husband to shoo them away and pretended like she was looking for stuff under table. I witnessed all this since I was at the hamster cage picking the one we were about to get. No one offered any help but were so quick to judge a kid. Maybe if she had offered help she would have gotten some compliments and a sale. read more

We have a Golden Retriever and a standard Labradoodle that we bring here for the grooming. We follow our groomer, Vicky, wherever she is. She is the BEST and our dogs LOVE her. Coco has extreme separation anxiety when apart from Bella and he is better there they do their best to accommodate him and relieve his stress. They are so kind and understanding. I went to this Petco location and used the Petco vaccine (Vetco) service for my dogs. I asked if I could get a prescription to use at Costco for my Flea/Tick medication, and the Vet Tech not only told me yes, but also spoke with the Pharmacy Tech at my Costco. Using Costco would save me over $100 per dog, and I have 3! When I was paying for the vaccines, I asked for my paperwork and was told they would email what I needed. The next day, I went to Costco with my paperwork, and my Costco Pharmacist told me they need an original signature on the prescription and that this is standard, but I always have issues with Vetco /Petco. I called the # listed on my dog's paperwork, and a person outside of the US tried to handle my simple request, but in the end, I was told it could take 7-10 days through customer service. I then called the store and spoke with the store manager (Stephen). Even though Stephen seemed to understand my issue, he said he could not help me and would let the district Manager (Thomas) know about this problem and that he would call me back. Before hanging up, I asked Stephen to please call me back to let me know what and when I could expect to get help with my issue once he spoke with Thomas. This issue has been over a week, and I still have no flea/tick medication or a courtesy call back from anyone from this Company. I also called the Cottle location, hoping I could go there to get someone to sign a prescription, and was told NO because it has to be done by the Vet who gave the shots! read more

Very abrasive and I felt upsold, rushed and judged for the treatments or lack of treatments I was providing for my dog. He had plenty of information, but I felt icky interacting with him. I ended up paying more than I should have for a bath and nail trim. Information overload and I was feeling uncomfortable. My dog isn't well behaved, but he's still a sweet boy. I just needed to get his nails trimmed and have him bathed asap. Petco on Meridian was able to take my dog same day, but we won't be returning. read more

I went in today to buy live food for my Bearded Dragon. In every container there were dead worms. No live critters available. I use a cane and it's hard to walk but I had to walk all over the store to find help. The employee was rude and dismissive. As I was leaving I saw the employees standing around up front. I was near a Petco after lunch today and needed to walk off some eats so I decided to head over and see if I could find any cute toys for my dog. This Petco is gigantic and there is a ton of space between the sections of aisles but not the aisles themselves. It was a big store but it didn't seem like they had a ton of selection. However there were some really neat items including Infinity War themed dog toys and Pusheen branded items! I did walk over to see the fish and saw a pretty big double-sided display of Betta fish. One side was almost empty while the other was fully stocked. There was one lonely fish on the emptier side that wasn't doing too hot. On the other side, they all looked to be in pretty good health. Some were actively swimming while others were hanging out. They did have males and females for sale, as well as baby Bettas. There were a lot of different colors as well and they did vary on price based on their appearance. They were all really well labelled so you can figure out exactly what you're getting in terms of pricing. When we walked over to the main fish section, we saw one employee with all the fish from the other side. These ones were getting their water changed which was nice to see. As with all Petcos, you're welcome to bring your pup and we saw a few shopping with their owners. This store also has a grooming salon that wasn't too busy at 2:00pm on a Sunday. There was also a sign outside that said there was a vaccination clinic from 10:00am - 2:00pm. It was unclear from the signage whether this was a recurring thing and was also lacking today's date as well. I didn't find anything too appealing today but I have managed to find cute toys on sale in the past. read more

JUST DONT COME HERE. This place is terrible. Not only have I bought 3 aquatic animals from this place and they all had some disease. One fish had fin disease, another had a parasite, and the other one came dead. The aquatic guy was so rude I was just telling him what fish I wanted since there was so many fish in the tanks and he was like "I know" every time. I stopped in here the other day to grab some pet food for my dog. Of course, I couldn't just get pet food. I browsed around and found a dog toy and t shirt in the spirit of Halloween. When I went to check out, I was surprised by the price of the t shirt, even after the Pals Rewards were entered. The man at the register told me that was the price marked (there was no price tag on the actual item). I told him I was going to go double check where I found it and when I did, the price was $13.99 with the Pals Rewards and he was attempting to charge $17.49. I told him this information and he still stood firm on the higher price. I asked him if he wanted to go check it out for himself and he rolled his eyes, sighed, and walked over. All of the exact same shirts were hanging under the $13.99 marked price and there was actually nowhere on the entire wall of items that was even priced at $17.49. I asked him if he could honor the price marked on the wall and he said no and then continued to attempt to add the shirt to my bill. I told him I didn't want it anymore because he was not charging me the correct price. He continued to argue about it and then I left. This was a very disappointing experience for me and I will not be returning to this Petco. The only positive was getting a toy my dog loved and the food I needed. read more

Wow! I'm impressed with this Petco. K n F are very happy with their new bathroom :) I am too! I've searched for a better litter box forever and finally found a couple of really awesome design. It's roomy and with the flap for a door it keeps the litter from being spread around all over the place. I also found out that they sell a Petco brand kitty litter that has no powder shower when the kitties cover their crime. It's being tested further right now by K n F. Tons of kitty condo too! I wanted the plush covered condo with two rooms and a myriad of perches and holes. Too bad it was too big. The store is just amazing with almost everything you need for your pet. Best Petco ever. Everyone in the super air-conditioned store was super helpful. I came in looking for feeder fish for a school event. Even though I was spending $1.20 in fish, I was treated as if I was buying a Tesla. She recommended that I buy a few extra in case they don't survive, told me how to care for them, and offered me extra bags that probably cost more than the fish themselves. This company does not treat their reptiles properly nor train their staff on how to properly care for them. I went in today to get crickets for my new beardie that I bought from a different pet store and they ended up not having any. I decided to go look at the baby beardies and was shaken up and in disbelief as to how they take care of all of their reptiles. First of all, the tanks had dead crickets all over the place and then I also had noticed that there were live crickets crawling all over the little bearded dragons. This is not okay by any means...With beardies, you have to pull the live food out if they decide not to eat it. ESPECIALLY with crickets because they'll bite the lizards. One of the tanks that had dead crickets in it had a malnourished and appeared to be dead bearded dragon. I'm disgusted with the fact that these pets aren't being checked up on and how many of them look underfed.. The other tank had a juvenile bearded dragon in a tiny aquarium... There are no excuses for treating the reptiles this way. Not only does petco give out the wrong routine information for reptiles, but they also underfeed and send people home with sick pets because they aren't properly caring for them. Vicky the groomer in this Meridian location is an excellent groomer for my Bailey. We followed her wherever she goes. Bailey is very delicate and sensitive to other people. And hardly trust groomers. She used to go to other pet salon for a long time until one incident that we don't know and Bailey refused to go back to that place. Until we found Vicky from petco she loves her so much that we follow Vicky whatever Petco location she goes. I told Vicky baileys sensitivity the first time she groomed her and it seems that Bailey likes her that we continue taking her back.
