Took my dogs in for grooming and have been here before. I was turned away because the person at the Register did not know what she looking at when I showed her proof of vaccinations. She went to ask the "experienced" groomers and they said they can't accept it. They said it needs to show when the shots were taken and when it expired. Along with vet signature on it. When it clearly stated all of that on the record I took for proof. I've used the same thing in the past to show proof and now there saying it's not acceptable. Next time all invite my vet to show proof. Petco should educate there groomers on what vaccinations look like. read more

We wanted our dog to get a short cut down to 1/4 inch since her hair was quite long. When we got her back, she looked the exact same and was charged almost full price. We weren't able to see our dog before we paid. Our groomer promised if they weren't able to groom her, we would get a refund. By the time we got her back, we called the store and said our dog was too nervous to be groomed, but either way, we should've gotten a larger refund since the groomer didn't do what we asked. read more

Went here the other night, they were short staffed and couldn't find anyone to assist. There was an aquarium tank on sale we wanted which was being promoted to be sold with the stand. There was only 1 left of the tank that had the water heater, filter, and etc all wrapped in a clear bag in the tank. I realized the bag had a hole, but it was the last tank and stand kit in stock. I flagged someone down (carlos?) who came to help. He said that the stand wasn't included in the price just the tank... that didn't seem correct at it said "ensemble kit" so to me, it came as an ensemble! Not a singular tank? I asked if there was some accommodation that could be made since the bag had a hole in it, but he said "nothing is wrong with it, maybe it's missing the thermometer." Ok so of course I'm thinking... are you going to give us a new one then? Or at least a discount since it's the last one and the last (display) stand and it's clearly be tampered with. He was not trying to offer any help, just make it clearly known we were irritating him. He thin ripped open the entire bag to show us the contents... we didn't ask him to rip the entire bag open, so now we felt obligated to purchase. Which we did... the tank alone. Fast forward to next day... I ran into the UC petco which was closer to home. Saw the same tank and stand and display with sign. The employees there confirmed it was to be sold as a set... i told them what happened and they willingly accommodated me and gave the stand to take home! Poor inventory. I made an online order for store pickup and when I got there I was told my items were out of stock. They said there was a mistake with their inventory. This is absolutely unacceptable and is a major inconvenience to the customers. Bad management is probably the reason to blame. In addition to having abysmal inventory, the manager purposefully stalled to talk to me. When I approached her, she lengthened her phone call with speech unrelated whatsoever to store operations. Very clean, and very friendly/ knowledgeable workers. I went in shopping for my cat and was sad to see such a small selection. The grooming area/dept. only grooms dogs. I feel like this is only down fall and being a cat owner it is a very big downfall. But in retrospect I also have dogs so the selection for dogs are wonderful. I have small and very large dogs. So the variety between sizes and styles are excellent. I love the lay out of the store and it has a very welcoming feel. read more

I was a little hesitant to take Haley in for a grooming as I've read the reviews online but overall I had a great experience! Haley was extremely matted and due for a groom so I called a little last minute. The receptionist on the phone said they had an opening right the next day and the earliest available was 9am. Since I had work later that day, the 3 hour groom time worked perfectly. I dropped Haley off at 9 and it was early so I understand that not everyone is a morning person, especially myself. Everything went quick and seamless, I was able to request a full bath treatment (Best in Show, I believe is what they called it). I wanted Haley fully shaved, short hair, basically I wanted a new dog for the summer and no more mats! A little before 12, the groomers called and she was ready for pick up. I arrived, paid the amount (which was a little less than the quoted price so I was ecstatic) and picked up Haley. She completely looked like a new dog. She's no longer fluffy and cute but she's completely shaved down (perfect for this hot heat in SJ), no more mats, no nicks or cuts (unlike other places I've been to...) and she looks extremely clean. I ordered some items online and pick up in store today 08/25/2020. And also I returned a few items that bought it in El Camino Petco store. First the big Mexican Lady at the register ask me "what do you need to help" then I said I need to returned some items, she checked every single item and opened the package to see if I had used it but I'm not in that kind of person. When I went out the store and open the bag that they gave it to me I saw 6 items total but one item is had no stuff in it and one is open the package. My dog Ace had an appointment for a shave and nail trim. I received a phone call from them about 15-20 min later stating Ace was injured from being in the kennel Scratching . My dog has never done this . Person said he was crazy. She was insensitive , unprofessional and over the phoned seemed immature. I've been a patron of the two other pet store chains for so long that I've only recently begun shopping at Petco. One of the things I'm always looking for is value and quality for my dogs' food. One day while in a pinch for food, I stopped at a Petco on my way home and had to get food. Of course, it would be my luck that the food I feed my dogs is only sold at the other store so I picked a different food. I follow the portion rule and transition them to the new food, which they are happily eating now. The price is just right and the dogs are not reacting to any yucky ingredients. Over the weekend I bought a different flavor and my dogs love that food too. Win-win so far right? The review I'd like to share is for the grooming station at this location. I've had the pleasure of bathing my two dogs myself for a long long time....in fact for more than 14-15 years for one of them. On occasion, back in the day I used to have my senior dog groomed at the other big name pet store and was always happy. These days it was all me...all the time. I decided to give myself a needed break and schedule for both of them to be groomed by the professionals. Scheduling was a breeze. It was my first time so had to provide the rabies certificates etc. The check-in time could have been a little more seamless, but I understand the woes of a slow computer system. I was a little surprised at their concern for my senior dog and how long he should be there, and even what kind of grooming would be good and what wouldn't. We agreed to keep it simple and keep it short. I had to sign a waiver in case something happened to him. The estimated time was on point. Within 30-40 minutes I received a call saying he was ready for pick-up. When I arrived, my dog looked great. His hair was soft, shiny and was combed very well with little of the fur falling off. Sometimes it's all over the place. Elaina (I think was her name) was a doll and able to get his nails trimmed, which he absolutely loathes. Yah! I'd never be able to get this done myself. My second dog was there still and told to expect about 2 more hours for him to be ready. He needed a clean up, not a haircut, and this time a different groomer took care of him. Again, the timing was right. When I picked him up she filled me in how he behaved and wouldn't stand up for her...lazy little legs...oh boy. LOL. His coat was so clean and they did a wonderful job with the clean up of his hind leg fur and around his paws. This dog mom was very happy to take home freshly bathed dogs. My trust in these groomers has been established and I hope to be able to bring them in more often. Thank you grooming team! read more

I've had a pretty bad experience here before... Me and my boyfriend were checking out the hamster/mice section and the white mice must've been hungry or the workers must of starved them because they were eating each other. I would go into detail but I just ugh can't. It was horrible I was so sad. I almost cried cus I can't imagine being so hungry that I would go eat one of my own. And when I told the worker she chuckled and said oh they're hungry. And I'm like WELL YEAH BITCH OF COURSE THEY ARE. All I can say is they're really bad with maintenance and I'm not sure how I would feel about leaving my dog with them ever. From the bottom of my heart, please do not take your dog to get groomed here. I was able to make a same day appointment and they finished in about 2 hours. I was really impressed at how fast it was, considering most groomers keep your dog for about 3 hours. Initially I was happy with the cut...I wanted it short like a summer cut and they did just that. However, the problem is when I took my dog home. He wouldn't stop biting and licking his tail/butt area and rubbing his butt on the rug. After closely examining it, there was a big bald spot which I think was really irritating him. I felt so bad for him...it must have just been cut way too close to his skin. Now to the big problem that really concerns me. My dog sleeps in his crate every night and he always sleeps and wakes up when I do. For the next 2 nights, he would whine and cry SO loud in his crate and when I check on him, he's sitting straight up. So weird!! This happened ALL NIGHT LONG. I'm talking about whining and crying nonstop until about 8am. It didn't matter if I went to take him outside to potty, played with him for a little bit, or tried to console him, as soon as he went back to the crate the constant crying would continue. Like I said, this happened for 2 nights since I picked him up so I wasn't able to sleep. It boggles my mind to think about what could have possibly happened within 2 hours. I've gotten him groomed before many times (at other places) and he has never once acted this way afterwards. Also, when he eats and drinks, he does so very slowly now, like he's scared. I can tell he's seriously traumatized by something. It honestly breaks my heart. I have no idea what happened at the groomers but I would never risk taking him here again and definitely do not advise anyone to take their lovable pets here either. read more

I'm a new dog owner and I have to admit it can be pretty expensive if you don't know what to shop for. The first time I shopped there for food, I did an online comparison with the price for Royal Canine. So I went there believing that I was making a "smart choice" but in the end I realize the stuff online was cheaper than in store. So that was a bust but I didn't want to waste anymore of my time so I purchased my 3 pounds of dry food for about $17. Obviously, their products cost more than most pet stores I've been too. The trick is, you just got to be a smart shopper. I live a lot closer to Petco than at Petsmart. So one night, I felt really frugal -- I didn't feel like wasting gas or paying a shitload of money on dry food. Petco just happen to be on the way and instantly, I remember that they do a price match! In case you don't know what a price match is, it's a practice in which a store promises to match another store's prices for certain products. In the end, I was a satisfied shopper. I didn't have to drive 2 miles for dog food or waste my gas (always a bonus). They even told me I can return the dog food even if its half empty. Plus if I ever decide to purchase the same dog food again I can show the cashier my receipt so I don't have to flash my phone at them to prove the price match at Petco. The general pet store has great workers. I am reviewing the pet grooming side: The young lady at the counter was slow. She spoke slow, she moved slow, and she think slow. She did not acknowledge me while picking up a phone call in front of me. After she hung up her brain decided to take a few minutes break before she looked up and ask if I needed help. While waiting for her I glanced at the groomers tending to the dogs. They were a bit rough and it seemed like they did not enjoy grooming the dogs. This reflects on the manager which seemed stressed out as if he was trying to turnover dogs as fast as he could. Avoid and save your money here at all cost. There are plenty of pet groomers in San Jose that will treat your companion it deserves as well as better pricing. read more

(i thought i was being considerate!) when i dropped him off, i told her what i haircut i wanted and that my dog tends to bite so she needed to put the mouth piece over him. left him there and felt confident with the stylist; she told me that she going to have him ready by 3pm. i paid for the haircut and left. well my dog was not returned to me until after 5pm with a horrible haircut. apparently, the stylist told my sister that my dog was "uncooperative" and difficult to handle and had to take "breaks" for cutting his hair. She even had the nerve to tell my sister that she "did not want to finish his haircut" and that she was planning to return him with his haircut. my sister called at 3pm to see if my dog's haircut was completed. she told my sister that she did not even start on him yet. you could tell that she rushed through my dog's haircut and that she put no effort in it. she quickly finished to have the job completed. it was a complete waste of my money and my time. i felt sorry for my dog. read more

EDIT: July 2016. A lot has changed in 6 years. They are down from 5 stars to 1 star now. The staff are still great and the work they do is great. The problem? They now use CHOKE-LEASHES to move the dogs around! I was told this is now their corporate policy and there is nothing they can do about it. My dogs' leashes are attached to vests and they have never been leashed around the neck. So when I took them in and the choke-leash was thrown over their necks. Naturally the dogs were confused and resisted. ** I WATCHED THE ATTENDANT TRYING TO DRAG MY DOG BY THE NECK AND MY DOG CHOKING AND GASPING! ** She refused to use my leash and said it was now against their corporate policy to use the owners leashes. I stopped it immediately and complained. I met with the store manager who was very polite and apologetic. However, she explained that short of breaking company policy there was nothing she could do. So now after 10 years of monthly grooming with them, I'm looking for a new groomer. read more

I informed an employee and all he said was "oh". Seriously? Why are you guys selling expired food? And they had one of the cat treats on sale for $0.98 because it was expired. I went into Petco at 9:50 am. Waited patiently while a young make employee who had NO name tag on got a customer feeder fish. Once he freed up I was not greeted with a WARM welcome or how can I help you sir! I got a blank stare as if this person hated there job and so I took that as let me initiate the convo and asked if they had Small crickets in stock. He stated yes they did and I asked for him to get me 100 small crickets. He then smiled and said UM NO I can't do that but gave no reason. I then asked why and he said ," well we just got small crickets in and if I get you 100 we will sale out quick." Isn't the point of a pet store with customers to sale products? I then asked if they didn't have 100 I'd take what they had and again with a smart tone to is voice he states ," well I get get you 30." If you have reptiles you would understand 30 small crickets is 1-2 days of food only and I have 2 leopard geckos. So I then asked him why he can only do 30 and not let me buy the amount they have on hand or my original 100 and he again stated ," I can do 30 like I said before." ( in his annoyed smart a$$ tone) I asked for the manager at that point and low and behold he stated there was NO manager there and he was in charge! I then walked out off the store and placed a call to corporate with this same complaint but I want to let customers know how they treat people here. I have been a LONG time PETCO customer and you hav what lost my loyalty and business and I WILL make sure all my fiends and family know this also along with social media. My puppy (8 month old maltipoo chihuahua mix) has never gotten fully groomed before. I would usually bathe and give him a haircut at home. I've been to this location a couple times just to get a face, feet, and fanny trim. The groomers did a great job! I recently made an appointment for my puppy to get fully groomed and he looks amazing. Stephanie did a great job with Benji! He usually gets scared when it comes to grooming, but she was so nice and gentle with him that he felt comfortable enough to let her do her own thing without giving her a hard time. If there is a way to put minus 5 stars, that would be my rating for the grooming service/staffs at Petco Tully rd in San Jose. Today when me and my wife took our dog to a scheduled grooming service, the lady in grooming service told us that she can't finish our dog grooming before the store close for the day. She claimed that it will take 3+ hours for her to finish the grooming so we need to reschedule another appointment. We have been taking our dogs to the same Petco store multiple times and this is the very first time someone told us they can't finish the grooming in time, even though there were no other dogs there at the time. We told the lady that we been there multiple times and no one ever told us it will take so long to do a grooming service, she then just said "if you guys don't happy w/ my service, you can go somewhere else", with very bad attitude. She even asked us, do you guys want to spoke to my manager? even though we did not ask to in the first place. The manager came and he just asked: what do you want me to do? Fire my employee? We were in shock that even the manager has such bad attitude, this is how Petco treat their customers? Doesn't a loyal customer deserve a little bit more respect? How a big company like Petco can allow their employees treat people like dirt? and telling customers that they can't complain at all? I am really speechless, does Petco understand they are damaging their company reputation, if they do care about their customers. read more

I hate to give this place a bad review.. The only reason why I stuck around is because 1) the location is VERY convenient for me and 2) they USED to have very friendly store staff members that gave time to greet you, truly helped you out with products and items if you weren't too sure what to purchase and give you advice if asked.. I no longer see any of these people there. The reasons for my low star rating: 1) on one of the occasions that I brought my dog in, she usually gets a treat at the cashier register area. The girl who was running the cashier that day asked if my dog can have a treat. I said yes, she starts throwing treats on the floor (ugh, mind you how dirty the floors might be with dogs accidental urine and feces that may have happend on that spot where the treats landed) I don't know why I didn't think of it at the moment, maybe because I was busy paying. But I don't appreciate you throwing food onto what may be dirty floors. Past cashiers always handed it to her. 2) I bought a "happy birthday" biscuit for my girl. And there were maggots found on the back of the bone shaped biscuit after opening the unopened box.. How's that even possible? 3) I went around the snack/treat bar and started putting varieties of snacks in the plastic bag, I came across one set of treat and there were maggots in there! I went and informed the cashier, all he simply did was remove the scooper with one maggot and put the snacks back in. I told him there was more in the snacks. Yes he apologized.. I asked how often do they change them and he said every end of the week. And I even suggested they put lids on all the treats. He said he'd inform the manager.... I don't know if he really will, or if they threw out and cleaned out the treat bins... But that's disgusting and that just made me never want to return to this location. Petco Grooming was Great but not all Petco grooming is great you have to really find a good one and stick with that person and that's what i found. Jenna was my dogs groomer and she was awesome my baby was super matted because of the rain and in dire need of a cut. i knew that she would have to be shaved down so i left unhappy. when she called and told me she was ready i was bracing myself to see a pink little dog with no hair and shivering..... But NO ! to my surprise she looked soooooooo cute the girl put two bows in her hair left her ears and tail fluffy and her hair was short but not ugly. I was soo Happy! Thanks again Jenna. The main highlight, goes to the grooming department, namely Jennifer (I believe it's jenn maybe). She is polite, and professional, and Cash loves her. For that I come back. I honestly really despise this place. Every single time I come here, I am always offered bad service, as if the workers really know nothing about what they're doing. On multiple occasions, when I ask for help or assistance, I almost always get a worker that says "I don't know" or "let me refer you to someone else". Usually I try to be more understanding if/when it's one or two occasions that a person really doesn't know, but EVERY single time a person "doesn't know" is quite excessive. Or IF I do get some sort of assistance, I am always told the wrong thing. People are friendly but the cleanliness of the store is not up to par. There is dried pee on the corners of alot of the aisles in store. I thought the store also smelt bad because of this.
