I have a Siamese fighting fish, a BETA.. who I was ironically gonna name Alpha but, I thought that would just be a bit too cute. So I call my little Beta fish Belly. Like the movie. That means my Beta would whip your Beta's ass. 6:00pm Fight Night My House Be There My Beta against your Beta Winner takes all. Oh, I'm diverging. Sorry. Seriously, though. PETCO has everything a pet owner could need. I used to have a cat, and bought my cat litter, cat food and everything else here. They have much of the same brands that local vets carry anyhow, especially when it comes to the low ash cat food options. Plus, their prices are pretty good, especially with the PALS card. They even have some good all natural odor removers. Usually, it's difficult to find the natural pet food options at chains like this, but, PETCO does a nice job of carrying a variety of pet food at good prices. And, they've got cute little toys and even doggie sweaters (most of which are poly stuff), although most of them are too big for smaller dogs like chi- hu's. And, they don't carry harnesses for smaller dogs here either. read more

I've got to say I'm disappointed. Took my bosses dog in. Not a difficult dog to do as he is a golden retriever ! Came back with lopsided haircut , some long hairs sticking up between his paws and legs, some areas look like they chopped off hair and others got left long ( same quarter of legs just different sides , almost like they forgot to do a side ). Looks hacked and uneven!!!!! Only good part is that he smells clean but the worse lopsided hair cut . Dog walker came and asked what happened " did the 3 year twins give him a hair cut!!!!!!" So surprised as last time they groomed him they did a great job. This time it's horrible!!! Was going to try them again for my dog but after this haircut there is no way I'm letting them near my collie. read more

The training classes are spectacular!! Ann is the best dog trainer we have ever worked with. It was amazing affordable and she was delightful. Ann is patient, kind, knowledgeable and such a wonderful resource. When I come back to shop here (they have a new manager!) and get grooming done- they do a wonderful job and bath and nail trim is only $39! What a bargain and they are fast and caring. I've tried my best to ignore the hassle it is to schedule a simple nail trim. I can only leave voicemails and they never call back the same day. Not even the next day. I've called on a Monday and get a call back on a Friday. Last year a young associate there was always the one giving my dog a nail trim and every time she bled. I didn't notice once at first (only when I looked in my backseat and it was covered in blood) and stopped at VCA on 4th street so they could stop the bleeding.-I did inform the groomer and she gave me a free nail trim for next time, couldn't refund me. She also wrote a note on my dogs file that the next time she bleeds they won't see her anymore. These are professionals? I forgave her because my dogs nails are black and perhaps that's too difficult. I haven't seen her since and my current encounters have been mediocre as well. Today was the last straw, I scheduled this appointment on Sunday 4/18 and they give me a call at 7:30am today 4/20 to tell me the groomer cancelled her nail trim appointment at 10:30am and she will call back to reschedule. Never got a call back. I mean you know it's bad if you're reluctant to leave your dog alone with them when they tell you to go pay. This store is also filthy, has low stock, and the customer service is awful. I work in retail so I understand the quality it should be and I always make sure to greet the employees there and wish them a good day. The only reason I went is because I moved from Novato to SR. The Novato location is amazing, clean, always fully stocked, and literally has the best employees who actually care about animals. read more

Ugh. I wish I would have read the grooming reviews BEFORE I brought my dog in. I brought her in several months ago, so I'm hoping management has addressed the issues. If you have, please let me know and I'd be happy to give you another shot. I've had good experiences with other petco grooming centers, so when we moved here, I just set up an appointment. I dropped my girl off and was told it would be an hour. When I called later to double check before driving down, I was told they were swamped and she wouldn't be ready for another 2 hours. No big deal. However, when I picked her up, after 3 hours, it didn't look like she'd even been bathed. Seriously, her foot was still dirty. Toenails were not trimmed. Fir was not clipped. The real kicker - they charged me a random extra fee for extra combing time. Again, I would have gladly paid it except that she didn't look at all groomed and was still shedding. From now on I'll drive up to Novato. read more

Recently bought a goldfish and 3 other small fish. The 3 small fish died the next day. I go back to the store thinking I'd get new ones. I find some possibilities but then notice ... Horrors- there's a big DEAD fish in the corner looking like its been there a few days. Then I look closely at another tank and there's ANOTHER dead fish. Obviously, these tanks are not being cared for properly. Didn't they notice? Or care? A few days later my new goldfish is dead. I've had my aquarium for years and know how to take care of fish so when they die like that, something is going on with their fish. Beware. read more

Its true- this place really sucks. The employees don't offer any help at all. Nada! They have a good amount of toys, but most are cheaply made and your dog will chew them to shreds in a matter of hours. And yes, the animals there are in terrible condition. I'm not some PETA activist, in fact PETA to me stands for "People Eat Tasty Animals," but their conditions are ridiculous. Seems like there isn't a fish tank that doesn't have at least one dead fish, or dying fish. When I was 11 my friend bought a bird from this Petco. It died the next day! I've been to the store several times, and my only complaint is that sometimes there are not enough people working to help out. However; Today the staff made up for it in spades! Very specifically Mary and Amanda went above and beyond spending time with me and showing me the most popular cat toys, scratching posts and how to reach your cat positive behaviors. They showed me items that their own cats love. They spent time helping me pick out a cat tree which was a big purchase for me today. They were so helpful. They have a price checking program to make sure you get the best price and they will match or beat any price online. The store manager was also tremendously friendly and helpful. I just can't say enough good things about my experience in the store today and the exceptional staff who work really hard there! read more

We brought our dog here for her Rabies and other shots, having made an appointment with the Vetco Division in the San Rafael store. In the store, the floor was wet and my husband slipped on the floor with our dog on the leash hitting a sharp shelf on the way down and he started bleeding. Employees were nearby but they just look at my husband, noticed he was bleeding and handed him a roll of paper towels. Then our dog urinated on the floor and the employees just continued to look, said nothing, not assisting, not asking "are you alright?" . After the incident, I provided feedback on the website and a couple of weeks later the DM called and left a message, asking for a call back- I called back and left a message, never got a call from him. Then I had a question about one of the tests that was done, I called their off-shore call center, and a month later, and 2 months after the incident, I received a call back for that issue. Most retailers would have been more prompt in responding, maybe offering a gift card or some gesture? Nope, just sorry about that..... That's the last trip we will take to Petco. read more

Prefer the Novato location for the inventory and consistent replenishment, but wanted to give props to the handful of folks that have to tackle all aspects of the store. While a younger set at this store, they are also eager to tackle issues to keep the lines a-movin'. In the past, we'd wonder if there was anyone around to help. Looks like they are finally updating the habitats... In response to the Beta morgue review, we happened to just see the water change process as we were looking for a fish house. The parking situation at this shopping strip is horrible, so park in the rear or keep circling to be as close as possible if you are buying large items. read more

A-OK is fine with Petco. I bring our large dog into the grooming area to get his pawdi-cure done. He doesn't really like his claws clipped at home but is fine with the groomers at Petco. They are good with him as his size can sometimes be an issue for other groomers. This Petco is fine with their product selection too. They have the food we need and the pet products we need. The toys don't really last with my large breeds but they seem like they would work well with a smaller breed (and for a dog that is 150 pounds most other breeds are smaller breeds) read more

This place is ok for a national chain. Sufficient if you need inexpensive supplies, but not my fave place to go. Staff is pretty hit or miss - and watch out for all the dog food brand reps! While they tend to know where most things are, they're really just their to hock their particular food... usually not anything I want! Since they are such a big chain, they usually have what I'm looking for, so that's a plus. But it's not exactly a place I want to go and just "browse". The grooming salon staff is quite friendly though - brought in my recent adoptee to be shaved (poor guy was matted down to his skin) and he came out looking like a new man! Sadly the groomer didn't get the message to leave his leg feathers on and the blending with the clippers could have been better, but whatever - he was happy and so was I. read more

I bought a Pleco for my goldfish tank last week and now all my fishes are infected with ick! WTF? I wish I had checked the reviews before I bought fish from this place. They obviously don't take care of their fish here. Now my fish are swimming around with white spots. The following day when I go to buy medicine for my tank I ask if there is any kind of discount considering the infected fish they sold me. The person at the counter asks me, are your fish dead? I replied with no, not yet. He looked less interested and said nothing. Seriously, do my fish have to be dead for you folks to be held accountable for selling sick fish? We brought our puppy here for the level 1 training and I can't imagine having a better experience anywhere. It was THAT good. We brought our puppy back for the level 2 training and had an opposite experience. We had a different trainer, but I have no way of knowing it was due to the trainer or due to the training the trainer got. Maybe the AWESOME first trainer was a fluke, maybe the less than impressive second trainer was a fluke. The course was 6 classes long. One day included Mother's Day which we missed for family events. Another day included Easter which we missed for family events. The trainer missed one day as well. So, we paid for 6 classes and we only got 3 of them. If I had experienced anything in those three classes worthwhile I may have looked into rescheduling classes. It felt like each 60 minute class was about 5-10 minutes of puppies socializing (I'm fine with that). 15-25 minutes of training. And nearly a half hour of awkwardly waiting until the hour runs out and trying to figure out how to take advantage of having a trainer to help me with my dog. Part of the issue may be that the second course just isn't as exciting. In the first course the puppy learns fantastic tricks and commands that are entertaining and functional. In the second course the puppy is supposed to reinforce those already learned abilities. It's difficult for me to fault a trainer or the store without really knowing exactly where the fault lays. Either way, Puppy class 1 was amazing, the store staff is helpful, and knowledgeable, and the store's return policy seems great. I like the store! read more

This petco is the worst first I went to go take my dog to go get groomed and they asked for a rabie vaccination which they never ask for and when I forgot it they said that they could no my dog hair today and until next month and the next time we went it was canceled because my dog pooped and supposedly had worms but did not have any, for this they had to not finish my dogs hair and I still had to pay for his cut and I think u should not go to this petco groomers read more

Horrible experience. The cashier was extremely disrespectful towards me telling me to hurry up since "there was a line". She did not even give me an opportunity to put my phone number in, skipping that part completely so I did not get the opportunity to use my $10 pal rewards or receive the points for my purchase. Also her nose was out of her loose mask making me feel like they don't take safety protocols seriously. Another problem I have with that store is the fish all look like they are neglected and it honestly makes me sick to look at, for example I have seen dead floating in fish in dirty tanks where the other fish look stressed. It has been a day and I am still upset about my experience there. The Novato store is so much better and from now on I will only be shopping at that Petco, even though it is further away. read more

Sure...Petco is a chain, but honestly, they fact that they only connect people with dogs and cats through adoption agencies is 5 stars. Employees were nice and helpful. Merchandise can be a little spendy, but there's some good sales that happen and some decent products that are from inexpensive and adequate to super fancy. They've also go birds, mice, gerbils, etc. Was a bit disappointed with their fish though. they could've use better care, especially the bettas at this location. Let me start by saying I have been a HUGE advocate for your Vetco clinics for years. I used to be a dog trainer for petco and loved how you can get your dog vaccinated without the insanely inflated vet prices. I brought my golden in for some vaccines today (bordetella, lepto and flu) and walked out paying $87!!!! In the previous years these have cost me $45 max. In that total was a $69 health exam fee where the vet supposedly looked over my dog. This did NOT happen. The only part of my dog that vet even touched was her scruff to insert the vaccine. He said he evaluated her weight and deemed her healthy...I had no idea a glance was worth so much. For this kind of money I may as well go to my vet and get an actual examination, or at the very least a scaled weight. I am sad to say I will probably not be returning to your vetco clinic and will no longer be recommending it for its affordability. read more

I recently had to take over my father's freshwater fish tank. Today I went into Petco to get some bacteria to put into the tank as I had recently changed the water. I asked the person at the cashier's desk for help, and she told me that the "fish guy" was in the back. I walked back to the fish area to find zero staff members. I walked back up to the front and found the cashier speaking with someone who was walking towards me. I said, "Hi, I'm looking for bacteria for a freshwater fish tank?" The associate did not look at me, and instead just shrugged, continuing to walk towards the fish area. I figured this was the person to ask so I followed him back there. He picked up a few different bottles (one of which was not even bacteria), and was unable to tell me any difference between the two bottles besides the actual price. For the smaller bottle, he instructed me to pour the entire contents into the tank, without asking what size the tank was. I'm new to owning fish, but it was unreal how terribly ignorant he was about fish, as well as his completely apathetic attitude. I bought both bottles and when I got to the counter I was asked if I found what I needed. I said, "I really don't know." Zero response. I left knowing I would need to go somewhere else to get the help I needed. I won't be going back there for any reason. read more

The Asian guy (in San Rafael) tells me with water conditioner I can transfer my fish from 1 tank to another in 15 minutes. My gf Xmas gifts are all dead now. The woman who claims to be the expert told me she would refund me for 2 fish, even after I told her one of the glo fish was purchased over a month ago. When I got there I only got a refund for 1 because the computer won't allow a refund over 30 days. Don't tell me you'll do something when you can't. I've spent over $300 with this company and they lost a customer. Furthermore, the Novato location has a bunch of people working there that don't know what they're talking about and tell you contradicting information. I've also seen a large amount of dead fish at the Novato location and the employee said it's like that all the time, so they don't know how to take care of their fish and are likely selling you ones that are sickly from improper care. I've been coming in with my dog for a while now , all the groomers are very friendly and helpful . The only thing is the grooming is disgusting the floors are unbelievable gross . Not safe will not come back , they have reasonable prices but the floor are a hazard! Purchased some fish & food over the years as well. I abandon my large indoor tank some years ago. Our problem with PetCo is with their general incompetence as employers. My daughter was hired to become a dog trainer at PetCo in San Rafael CA, in October 2018. PetCo sent her to training and paid her for those hours, which was fantastic. The woman who trained her was great, and my daughter loved her. But her experience at the store was extremely difficult. The San Rafael store is horribly understaffed. They cannot hire or keep enough employees because the pay is so low, and much of the staff they do get are incompetent or resentful, or in the case of one employee, really high all the time. The store had been running with no manager for many months, so it was utterly dysfunctional and below PetCo standards in every way. They had just hired a manager when my daughter arrived, but he had barely had time to be trained, and the entire time he was there he was overworked, undertrained, understaffed, underwater, and generally stressed out of his mind. My daughter wasn't supposed to work the cash register - she was supposed to sell, schedule and teach classes, all on commission - but because of short-staffing, ended up stuck on the register all day most days. The manager himself would be stuck on the register all day, so couldn't get his job done. My daughter never received her new-hire paperwork. She was promised, but never received, her American Kennel Club dog trainer certificate after completing the training. The place was a nightmare. But the criminal part of this is that they never paid my daughter her commissions, which added up to approximately $500 over the time she worked there! Month after month she couldn't get a clear answer as to when they'd be paid. Her manager didn't know and was vague and distracted, so she tried to contact area managers or anyone higher up. All of them told her to call the HR dept, but that department (which is somewhere in Asia), couldn't tell her anything except that it was her manager's responsibility. Back and forth this went for months, until she finally quit the job. Now she's been out of PetCo for over 2 months, and still has not been paid, despite her constantly calling the manager, and anyone else we can think of. Meanwhile, her old manager left suddenly, and a floor manager who is utterly untrained for the job was promoted to manager. Nice guy, but he's in way over his head and has no idea how to get her her commissions. Apparently, there was some kind of computer glitch, or something her initial manager should have done but didn't, and now it's somehow impossible or too late, or would take an enormous input of time that no one there can afford. So it sits. Now we have to go through the Dept of Labor, and/or hire a lawyer and try to sue, and this will take even more of her time and resources. It's criminally incompetent. I cannot understand why such a huge corporation could be so ineffectual and disorganized. read more

Do NOT take your dog there for grooming services. We waited outside when 3 people were inside just hanging out, they saw us and didn't acknowledge us, eventually a tall woman with long black hair comes out and she asked us to put a leash WITHOUT a collar around the dog's neck and then she pull the dog. The woman pulled my dog and chocked him, he cried and coughed as he was choking so I opened the door and picked up my dog. She was confrontational saying that that's what they HAVE to do due to the virus. How is chocking a 10 month old puppy SAFE??? Second bad experience with this place, will never use their services again and do NOT recommend this business to anyone. Hope they go out of business for doing this. read more

My daughter wanted to buy a new fish today and the guy who helped her was too lazy to catch the fish with the fishnet and used the plastic container to catch it, but he crushed the fish against the wall of the aquarium and killed it. Then he just laughed and said that she could just take another one. My daughter was shocked and really sad. The staff there is just unqualified and unprofessional. They are mistreating animals. Go anywhere else but Petco San Rafael. I was initially pleased to be able to select same day delivery for new kitty litter. Have two sweet new kittens with bloody diarrhea and we definitely needed the kitty litter today. Waited all day and then received a non descript email that my order had been returned by their driver. What ?! Spoke with the Assist Manager, Jessie (who has no authority to solve real problems for his customers and unbelievably cannot do simple arithmetic) and he spoke with his General Manager Jerry (who did not want to be bothered or interrupted). Bottom line is that neither "dude" was willing to redeliver (even from an Uber or Lyft), and I had to beg for a 20% discount if, and only if, I come into the store tomorrow and buy the kitty litter. Their incompetence, lack of concern or accountability for their mistake, and inability to see why chain stores like theirs just don't get it and can't compete, forces me to go to Amazon. Shape up or close down. read more

We WERE loyal grooming customers but the last two times I went my dog, who is like my second child, was infested with fleas. The first time I questioned myself thinking, "Maybe this wasn't Petco." Then, the second time I thought, "Why do I doubt myself, this is the second time and now I know that this is a direct correlation!" I called to complain but was given the run-around, until I mentioned Yelping! Then, I got offered, not a free grooming but an Advantage treatment. Yuck! -- super toxic and I needed to pick out a ton of eggs, leaving my dog's skin red and open. I will not take "my precious" back ... ever! This is Marin ya know? Humpf! read more

I would have given this Petco 5 stars because everyone has been so sweet and helpful regarding helping choose items (food, toys etc) for my new chihuahua. I am a new dog owner and made many trial and errors. Day of the incident: I walked into Petco on June 25th 2015 at 6:30pm with a carrier that I had purchased two days earlier for my chi. However I had opted to buy a carrier that wasn't wrapped in plastic on June 23rd 2015. I noticed a mere two days later (because it was the first time I took it on a long trip around town without my car) that the carrier was dented around the metal portion where the clasps connect the short handle of the carrier. I explained this to the employee (named Renee) and she didn't believe me and insisted I show the exact damage of the product though I showed the cashier Gostovo (who was awesome BTW) prior to showing her, and he said it was fine to continue with the exchange. So she insisted on refusing to give me a recipe for the new carrier so even if there is damage to this new one I won't be able to return it. She also ripped the tag off of the new bag so I couldn't return it! She is a horrible customer service associate and I will be notifying Petco corporate about this matter. This type of treatment makes me not want to return to this store. This employee Renee needs to either be fired or given time off away from her position because she obviously does not work well with customers. read more

I just had the most stunningly poor customer service I just had to write about it. Yesterday, March 17th around 11:00 am I walked in and looked around for a backseat carrier for my dog. I asked a salesclerk, (long reddish hair, about 5'6") who was carrying around a barcode device, if she could help me. I got a very unfriendly glare and she actually stated "I've got a lot of things to do today". I've got a few things to do also, and one of them is to never shop at stores who treat their customers rudely. PETCO obviously does not need the business. read more

I was lucky enough to be helped out by Arianna McDaniel. She was very attentive and understanding as well as knowledgeable. There's ALWAYS guinea pigs that are sick that they are trying to sell. And my favorite is that they are always out of stock of pretty much all pet food. They only order when they are completely out of product, which leaves their shelves empty for days. I haven't been able to get even Timothy hay the last THREE times I've been in there. I have taken my little chipoo dog into this shop for grooming for a year now since moving here.... I have never really been satisfied that they do a good job but to keep them sweet I have always tipped... This time I will NEVER go back there again- I booked for a wash and nail clip $41 was the quote..ok I said that is good I am trying to cut back on cost this month I can handle that. When I went to collect my dog they added on for a but and belly shave I did not ask for another $6 probably took 2 min!!! I said NO I did not ask for that to the cashier and when we went back they we good enough to say ok we will take the $6 off... Thank You I said I always tip so that could be the tip. When I went back to pick her up I was waiting outside so she would not see me while they finished her off and i overheard them talking about me and the issue and the guy in there say people around here always want something for FREE!! I was MAD. I went in there they gave me her and I said "I did not want something for free as I did not ask for it in the first place" and " i will not be coming back here again.... They've changed up the grooming staff again and now the manager is somebody who's just tranferred in from Ukiah store. What this means is they don't know your dog/s at all and the person I dealt with didn't even bother to discern the difference between the FEMALE and MALE dogs I brought in. Further, they refused to "service" Sparky because he had a "hot spot"...a small quarter size red spot where he had been itching because OH HE NEEDED A BATH! Ended up leaving Tizzie and having to retrieve Sparky and take him to "self-service" dog bathing at Woodlands Pet in BonAire shopping center--in 20 minutes I had washed and dried him...they gave me towels, an apron so I wouldn't get wet and the service was great--all for $15 and a little of my time. Hmmm, and tell me why I would pay Petco to do this again?? not likely, especially since the new policy is clearly in place to protect the "corporation"...couldn't care less about the dog's comfort.
