Would give a zero if I could. Bought a bag of chicken from their refrigerator section and my dog got diarrhea from it. Went the next day to return it and they said they couldn't find me in the system so wouldn't accept the return. I asked them to run my credit card to confirm the purchase and they said they weren't equipped to do that nor could they find me under my ph #. I had spent $15 on the bag so I asked them to at least give me store credit. They claimed they were unable to until they called corporate. I then had to wait 45 minutes while they "called" corporate just to tell me they were unable to even give credit. I hope they check the temperature of their refrigerator but will never shop here again. read more

My dog and I walked to this PetCo last Monday morning around 9:30am. At first, I was kind of concerned that they might not open until 10 because the parking lot was totally empty and it looked a little dark inside. However, a very friendly employee greeted us and immediately showed us to the flea control section to pick up the Frontline we needed. He called over someone with a key to unlock the cabinet and then helped me find the one I needed. There was no wait at the cash register and the cashier was also friendly. It was kind of surprising to receive so much attention from salespeople here, even after I told them my dog doesn't need a groomer (after they helpfully pointed out that they have grooming services as well), and also that I wasn't really looking to buy product other than what my dog's vet recommended (they both also asked me if the product works for my dog.) I will probably be back since it's in a convenient location and has parking and helpful service. It seems like a pretty large and well-stocked store. read more

I used to think at chain groomers were basically the same. And at some point assumed that if you spent more money on a boutique groomer, you would get better service. But after the last couple of experiences at this groomer, I can say that's not true. The groomer here (I believe he goes by Luis but his shirt says Eleazar) is not only very nice and does an excellent job, he is also super helpful when it comes to tips on good products to use. He told me about a better form of flea meds than the topical I had been using, and also suggested a great product that is helping one of my girls' trash breath into something a bit more pleasant. They also smell fresh and amazing for longer when they come from here. Their fur, their ears, everything. I also noticed they go a great clipping nails. One of my dogs hates when people touch her paws so I have had experiences where it looks like they barely clip their nails. But here they work with her and I've been very happy with the results. My dog was having a problem with her ears, she was beginning to get an ear infection. My vet couldn't see her for a week, I researched and found that Zymox could help, so I went to Petco and Megan was so helpful to me! She got me the medicine and instructed me on how to use it. 6 hours later she is 50% less pink and hopefully it will continue getting better. I took my dog to Petco for a bathI. brought my own shampoo because he has a skin condition and needs medicated shampoo from the vet, they charged me an extra $8 to use my own shampoo. Called customer service about this told and me they would have the store manager call me back. He never did. I called back the following week they told me they would have the district manager call me back. He never did call back. Four days later called customer service again, told them the story that I never got a call back they said they would relay the message and he would call me back. Guess what after 3 calls no one ever called me back. The worst customer service, I will not walk into a Petco ever again the worst with the worst customer service! read more

Writing a great review for Mandy, employee and dog trainer at PetCo. My 6 month old Australian Sheppard hadn't been eating much of his food over the last week. After cooking him chicken, which he loved, I assumed it was the kibble he didn't like. I went to PetCo to find a new kibble brand my dog. Mandy spent a good 15-20 minutes with me walking up and down the aisles, reading through the ingredients for the different brands and breaking down what and why she thought certain options were good or bad options to consider. I went home with two brands, one of which was the PetCo brand, Whole Hearted, which my dog loved. Mandy was awesome and I appreciated her time. After decades of enjoying the wonderful customer service from my hometown Petco (Yale and Wilshire), it is so very sad to have to admit that their services are terrible. Ever since they hired the new manager Jessica - this Petco is not a friendly place anymore. Yesterday I went to Petco with my puppy to return a flea medication that my mom bought but it was the wrong product as my dog is over 18lbs not 10lbs as the box said. I went to exchange it for frontline plus 22lbs and pay the difference as frontline is more expensive. Not once did she address me as a customer, but someone that was bothering her. She then took my name and phone number and disappeared to her office for over 20 minutes leaving us standing there without an explanation. Upon her return she said that she can't find it in the system and without a receipt they can't do anything and then walked away. She was not only rude but condescending. If she treats the longtime customers like this, can you imagine how she can possibly treat the wonderful employees that are usually the heart and soul of this place? I rather drive out of my way to go to another Petco than go back to this one, at least until Jessica has been replaced with someone more amicable and caring. You are dealing with pet parents for pete's sake... TLC is kind of a must!! If I can't trust you to treat humans with decency how can I trust you to treat my furballs with any kindness? read more

This petco was alright. I was really irked that when I asked someone for help finding an item, he said he was "an intern" and wasn't sure he'd be able to help me. What is an "intern" doing at a sales location? Maybe at a corporate office, but this was just weird. I hope he's being paid at least, since they had him stocking shelves. The location isn't big, couldn't find a clearance section which sucks because there is no way in hell I'm paying $10+ for a toy my dog will destroy in minutes. Not the best Petco. But to give it some credit, most items were in stock at least. read more

This place I'm sorry to say is an absolute joke. Took my dog here today and come to find out the groomer cut open his ear and still had the audacity to charge my credit card. Do yourself a favor and stay clear of this place. Regret putting my Little guy through hell today. He's been lethargic all day and just not himself. The store didn't even have the decency to call me or see how my dog was doing. Saddest part of all of this was the fact that they didn't even wash him, the grooming was absolutely terrible, i just can't understand how they're in business and whose actually taking their pets here to get washed and groomed. Just recently there is a new manager that was hired. She has no knowledge in aquatics whatsoever. I went in to start a new fish tank and needed some assistance to get started and she told me to use certain products. So after waiting until my tank was ready, I return to Petco to buy two jumbo fish. one of the fish was getting sick the very next day. She starts suggesting other things to add to the tank and it only got worse. I ended up taking both fish back and they are now under observation. I was about to give up and was almost discouraged until I met Josh. He is a really nice employee and really cares about what he does. He's extremely passionate about his job and takes his position very seriously so that the customers are satisfactory. If it wasn't for him, I don't think I would have continued to support Petco with the poor management that it already is. Also the customer service I received from Josh is highly appreciated. My dog was literally crawling with ticks. It was New Year's Day, and I had hiked him on the Rustic Canyon Trail in the Santa Monica mountains. I sat for an hour searching and destroying those potentially dangerous bloodsuckers, when I realized I was overwhelmed--I had picked over 30 and there were myriad more. Now, I've always said that only two things truly scare me: skin cancer and Lyme disease. So, in a word, I panicked. I drove to the vet--closed. I drove to VCA--closed. I rushed to PETCO, which I had never been to before, to get flea and tick shampoo. I asked the woman at the check-out counter if she knew ticks, and she referred me to Grooming. I had no idea PETCO even had a Grooming department. I asked the woman there if she could possible bathe my dog, Cosmo, because I knew that if I tried to do it myself at home ticks would almost certainly get in my house, on my cats, and pretty much end my world as I knew it. Even though it required more time than was left on her shift, the woman, Karie McNickles, in her incomparable compassion, calmed me down and told me to bring Cosmo to her. In a nutshell, Karie stayed with me more than an hour AFTER her shift was up, double bathed my dog, counseled me, helped me fumigate my car in the parking lot, and taught me more about ticks and dogs in general than I would have thought possible from a trained Veterinarian. It very soon became clear to me that Karie does the work she does not for the money (of which there is not much), but because she truly LOVES animals, and can care for and communicate with them in a way no one I know can. I assumed she was an anomaly, but she insisted that one of the reasons she works at PETCO is because her colleagues in her department care for animals as much as she does, and they all learn from each other. My dog is absolutely spoiled, and my family spends a small fortune on him to make sure he eats the best food and gets the best treatment. After meeting Karie, we are bringing Cosmo to PETCO for all our Canine needs, and I will refer her and her department in Santa Monica to anyone I know that truly wants the best for their pet. Basic grooming - bath and nails - is $36.00. They charge $11.00 if you want your dog's teeth brushed and $6.00 to trim sanitary areas! These things are included at most other groomers we have tried. I will stick with Healthy Spot for my dog's grooming. She enjoys going there, they are super friendly and she always comes out looking great! read more

I come here once a month to get my haircut. I usually get a fade and the barbers there are pretty dope. They cut it up pretty close. But I've been recently trying out a faux hawk, and you don't know how many bitches come up to me and be like, "Yo, your ish is tight!" My only complaint is that their floors are all cold, and they don't have my favorite treats sometimes. But I guess with all that scare with the recalls, I can't blame them. Bought a healthy looking $28 betta fish here, a 2.5 gallon tank, and in total around $100 worth of cleaning and testing supplies. I prepped the aquarium as per the instructions of the on site fish expert and followed all feeding instructions religiously. I tested the water frequently using 6 different metrics and every testing yielded ideal results. Water was perfect and fish was not exposed to any contaminants. After a week fish began to exhibit classic signs of dropsy (a fatal disease once symptoms appear). Over the next week I watched the fish suffer terribly as I treated it with antibiotics and performed daily water changes. I asked the store for advice and was told I could exchange the sick fish based on photos I showed. They offered me $10 in petco bucks and to bring the fish back to store to exchange. I didn't like the idea of causing the animal further stress by transporting it and also secretly hoped I could treat the animal and bring it back to health. The fishes condition became worse and worse to the point where he lay motionless on the bottom of his tank and his belly was distended and scales stuck out. I knew it was time to end his suffering so I used clove oil and vodka to euthanize the poor thing. I was already attached to the animal you'd think people who work in a pet store would have some compassion for people caring about their pets and animals in general. The fact this fish was so gravely ill is an indictment of the company's treatment of these animals and the conditions the animals endure before they are sold. read more

I've been to this Petco 30x since I moved here in Feb. The staff is always so nice and my dog gets her nails trimmed and ears cleaned here often since I have the vital care membership. This location has such a rude and inefficient staff. I called to confirm an appointment because I received zero confirmation of my appointment today. I called first thing at 9am to ensure I wouldn't miss my appointment i waited weeks to get. I received many conflicting pieces of information and was hung up on about 6 times. They are closed but not closed for grooming (?!) I was told they couldn't talk to me because customers were in line, so I come in person so i could wait fairly my turn and the doors are locked. I get someone on the phone and they say they can't see me today. I ask when my appointment is and it's today. Huh?!?! Instead of apologizing the guy slams the phone. So I come to the door and wait for someone to open. There are at least 6 employees and zero customers. Asked to speak to the manager and she asked me to leave because they are closed. Zero understanding and more concerned about defending their poor customer service because they are "closed" but "open" for grooming, but can't help a grooming customer. Just awful. How can you have 6+ people on shift and not a single person can kindly confirm today's appointment? read more

I took my Shetland Sheepdog here for grooming. We've been coming here for years but he hadn't been groomed here in about 4 months. I asked for a hygiene cut which involves trimming his rear area and a little by the belly, maybe trimming his paws. Instead they chopped his fur like they were using shears to trim a bush. They chopped the fur on his belly way to short and uneven, then didn't even brush it out so it matted up. The fur on the sides of his body had a weird mullet chop when this shouldnt have been cut at all. They left a few dreads on his long neck hair instead of brushing it out. I don't know what happened to this petco - the groomers used to be awesome here. I am in the market for a new groomer. read more

Could there be a few more stars? Luis saves dog lives. My beloved senior Bernese Mountain Dog was 100 pounds of dense, beautiful fur. As often as I petted him, I missed the mass on his head. Luis touches every piece of a pet as he gently bathes him. He called me on the spot before drying and brushing (two hours, all that fur) so I could make an emergency appointment with my vet. It was malignant but caught early enough that a simple surgery removed it and I had another two years with my beautiful Papa Bear. He told me when Papa Bear was getting weaker, the weight of water and shampoo a little harder for him to stand up. I love everyone there. They are incredibly kind, pets love them and they don't take short cuts with brushing and examining a pet. I cannot imagine how anyone would accept less than this. Thank you Luis. read more

We took our dog to Petco in Santa Monica for grooming. I had read reviews and chose Asa as the groomer for our dog last Saturday. We asked for a "puppy cut" for our Golden Retriever and were expecting a cut that makes him look more like a Labrador Retriever, and also more like a puppy. When we picked Zack up, i was very surprised to see him with a haircut much shorter than i expected and was initially "shocked" as he looked a bit like a lion. After we got used to the cut, which took about 8 minutes, we found him so darned cute, he felt so so soft, and best of all, he, Zack, was so happy. Well unfortunately my little Roxanne has gotten used to a pet Food that is the crack cocaine of Pet Food, Castor and Pollux. Why do I say that you ask? Because they gave her a free bag of the stuff with my adoption coupons. Then you go back to buy more and you find out its like 28 bucks for a 13 pound bag. But it has been 10 dollars cheaper here during the truckload sale a couple of months ago. I stocked up but not enough. Anyway so for the time being that is all we buy there. We generally go to the Petco in Westwood first but since they so often don't have what were looking for in stock, we occasionally burn the gas to go here. We have been going to Petco for a lot of her basic supplies we already got but now I am going to go to Centinela Feed because the service and prices are generally so much better. The service is so horrible at this place. If you want any help you have to hunt someone down and then they aren't always helpful and try and move away from you instead of pointing out where stuff it. Also this place pisses me off that they have Chocolate Candy Bars at Doggie level in the line for the Cash Register. I mean come on Chocolate can kill a dog and these corporate douchebags choose to place it where a rambunctious dog could get it while a distracted owner is talking on the cell phone. I pointed this out to a cashier once and rather than tell me he would bring it up with the manager he told it was corporate policy to have them there. So not only is it a place for crappy service but the corporation doesn't actually care about pets. If anyone can suggest a good place to buy Castor & Pollux for around the same price or less please message me, then I can never go back here. read more

This Petco (like all the other Petcos) has everything you could need for a pet. This store is well-supplied and they have periodic sales that really save you money. What I do not enjoy about this store is the employees. 75% of the time, they are understaffed or are too busy to help you out. I come here once a month and about every other time, I notice this pattern of bad customer service. I especially had a bad experience last week when I went to buy some dog toys and fish supplies. The employee at the aquatics department did not have enough knowledge about the fish that was there. The aquariums were filthy and I saw a handful of floating fish. After I got what I needed, I proceeded to the check-out line. There was only one guy there and he was talking on the store phone (I don't know if it was a customer service call or a personal call). He did not even acknowledge that I was there... without eye contact, he took the stuff from my basket and scanned... he was on the phone the entire time and when I needed to pay, he just pointed to the credit card screen to tell me that I should pay the total amount. Awesome store with very helpful staff. My first visit here was so good I decided to leave a review which I hardly ever do. My cat is a very picky eater and wont eat dry food at all...never has. Not even once! I was hoping to find at least some new brands of wet food that my cat would actually eat because there us only one brand at the grocery store that she likes. A gentleman assisted me in picking the foods with the least amount of preservatives that he thought my cat would enjoy and it was beyond successful! I'm so happy to introduce new kinds of protein to my fur-baby; like tilapia filets, anchovies, duck, mackerel, and trout. Before it was just chicken, salmon, and tuna. Thank you! read more

Dunno if One-Star is appropriate...Like a bad breakup...my relationship with Petco is kaput! As a service dog-trainer and owner, I have spent thousands of dollars every year at this particular Petco. Last week a giant (thirty pound) bag of Nutro kibble was, on opening, full of ants (live, eating to their hearts' content). Did I mention that I store all the dry food in a Petco-supplied bug-proof container? The manager of the store flatly refused to consider any help, saying "It's got to be your fault, dude" (I'm seventy, and probably no longer rate 'Dude"), and "This has never happened" (the staff, who were more honest, told me it happens frequently)--the final insult was, "Did you bring pictures?" (Like, really? What purpose would pictures have served? To show I'm not a swindler? The attitude of belligerence and rudeness was the final straw...not a way for an honest business to serve it's customers. read more

Everyone has "their first place" where they take their new pet right after they adopt/buy it. This Petco and my puppy have a special bond over that first experience. Now that I have been to more than just this one pet store, I am surprised in retrospect that this location is actually a Petco, because all the other Petco's are gross and disgusting. This location, however, has ample parking (surprising since it's in Santa Monica!), is clean and bright, and has a decent line of items. I found all I needed (or thought I needed!) for my new Pup here, and whatever I didn't need, or even what the Pup only half ate/didn't like, Petco gladly takes back. If only all Petco's were as nice as this one...! read more

I really don't recommend going here for grooming. We've bought a few supplies here, and it's been OK, and some of the staff have actually been pretty helpful. But I thought I'd save some money and try out their grooming since it's cheaper than just about anywhere else in town. Well, I learned that you really do pay for what you get. Without naming names, I even went with one of the groomers that was recommended in other Yelp reviews. My dog came out looking like I'd tried to groom him myself....actually I think I may have done a better job! His hair was uneven, and cut much shorter than I'd asked. I think we'll suck it up in future and keep going to either Healthy Spot or Blue Pooch, which are more expensive but...as I've learned from this experience...both well worth the money! read more
