The Groomer Peabody, did a pretty good job on one of my dogs. And he wasn't injured like at the Mira Mesa petco grooming location (sliced skin off his ears on two different occasions). However, for my second dog. I made an appointment on a different day. I was called the day of, that the groomer I was randomly assigned was out sick. I was told I would be called back later that day to be rescheduled for a appointment that same day. They never called me. I even left a message at 3/4pm asking if I would be scheduled that day. No response. Am quite disappointed by the lack of response. I initially chose this location since it was the soonest Petco grooming appointment I could make for my dog's. I will instead wait a whole month to make an appointment at a closer Petco in hopes they have better customer service. read more

Ricardo & Larry This is way late in being posted as it was from a visit many months ago. But I wrote their names down and noted that I needed to do a review because of them. These guys were a super help. Using teamwork, they helped me running back to the aisles as needed and the other checking and looking up things at the register... both were very welcoming and ready to serve without any complaint. I can't remember exactly what my little chihuahua Keeper needed at the time, but our needs were met with a smile from both of these guys. Terrible customer service. When you advertise walk in nail trimming service for pets and when we bring our dogs in mind you a 20 minute commute we got turned away stating appointment only. Ummm first....nice store remodel!!! However, someone please help w/customer service training/employment requirements of cashier(s). (won't mention any names... but the name is if I were a she it would be my name Hint, my name is :Vic...So I lined up all the cans I was purchasing so she could scan the easily cause I'm good like that...which she did, but she wouldn't put them in the bag I was using to put them in. WTF?? Is that my job, or hers? Then said "Sorry" So I put them in. The attitude was effen poor (xtra "o" on purpose) and if didn't have my runner's high from doing 20 mi. in Mission Trails I would have made a point...if there IF I visit again I'll make a point of standing in THAT line and flag the manager next time. DO NOT BUY HAMSTERS HERE!!! My little girl's hamster had passed away after only 3 weeks. We know exactly what to do with me hamsters and she was alone in her cage. She got lethargic and then passed away. Petco should be ashamed to seek sick pets. My daughter is absolutely heartbroken by the death of her pet. She had just gotten her to replace her beloved hamster that had been with us for years. I feel terrible that she had to experience yet another loss because petco doesn't sell healthy animals. No animal should ever have to live such a short life. My only solace is that she enjoyed her last days of her life with a loving family and not in that disgusting store. read more

Came to buy a 44 pound bag of dog food and there was no carts but that was no problem because Raul stepped up not only did he load the bag of dog food for me onto a cart he tracked down he quickly rang me up and helped me load the heavy bag into my car! I like the selection in there Aquatic department, having everything from fish, live plants, food and care products. There prices are the same as other suppliers, plus a 30 day guarantee on live fish. The reason for the rating is that on several occasions 3-5 visits NOBOBY comes to offer assistance EVEN when you ask for someone to be paged! That lack of customer service pretty much negates all the positives mentioned above! read more

Tried to return 25$ dog food that and manger said she would give me only 99 cents because that all it was worth? I had the whole box nothing missing so if it's worth 99cent why do you guys sell it for $25? Do NOT COME TO THIS LOCATION. I have taken my small two dogs here once per month for the last two months for grooming. I made an appointment yesterday on 10/17/18 for grooming for both of them to occur on 10/18/18 at 1:30. I left my job, came home, picked up the dogs brought them to Petco and the groomer April (who is very nice) was sitting in her car on break as I pulled up next to her and parked. I brought the dogs in and the person at the counter told me I was scheduled for baths only and that the groomer would not have time for haircuts. She said she might be able to do it but they wouldn't be done until 6:00 and they would have to wait in the kennels. I told her I did not ask for baths only, I never do baths only and that they made a mistake. She never apologized or acted sympathetic she offered to reschedule for Friday for 25% off which is a complete joke considering how much money I lost today by taking the afternoon off and then again on Friday to return. I called at 1:55 to talk to the store manager, a girl named Kelsea answered (I suspected it was the girl in grooming whom I had contact with but I never caught her name). She put me on hold for ten minutes. I could tell the hold cycle rang back to the phones 3-4 times and nobody picked up and eventually someone just disconnected the call. Not only did they display incompetence, but a total lack of customer service and I suspect the girl who answered the phone never paged the store manager then hung up on me. Even if she did page the store manager, why would it take 10-15 minutes for someone to get to the phone to respond to a customer asking for a store manager. There was nobody in the store when I got there! So, here is your well deserved one star review. read more

You can tell this store is short staffed and we were the first to be helped for fish. The woman was obviously annoyed with the 2 kids in the department and when she dropped our shark on the floor, she just put it in the fish bag like nothing happened. It died after 2 days, the only fish out of 8 bought to do so, and when I tried to call the store to share my experience, the manager on duty just now was in just as a sour mood as the lady that helped us in store. Apparently it's normal practice to drop fish on the floor and give them to customers. The manager sounded pretty annoyed I called at all. I wasn't trying to return it or anything as we are time crunched to go out of town, I just wanted to share that hopefully they could avoid doing this to another customer. So if they drop your fish on the floor, ask for another. Poor fish. I get that everyone is stressed from being short staffed but we were a family of 4 excited for our fish tank. Don't take your dog to get groomed here!!! They cut my poor puppies whiskers off and didn't cut the hair on his legs or tail. He was there for 4 hours. April at the front desk insisted she was so busy answering phones and going back in fourth that she didn't have the time to cut his legs. My dogs hair is uneven and looks ridiculous. read more

I have avoided this store since there is always a dead fish in at least one of the tanks or Betas that don't look healthy. Plus the store smells. I would rather support a cleaner store that has better animal care. I have however ended up here a couple time since it is close to my house and even took home a sad looking baby beta last time. Today was the last straw though and I will never go back to a Petco. I tried to go to Petsmart to get a guppy and some Amano shrimp for one of our tanks. Petsmart only had a few guppies and no shrimp so we decided too brave Petco instead. WHAT A HUGE MISTAKE. First I spent a solid 30 minutes in the fish department with my 3 year old and 8 month old and didn't see a single employee so there was no one to get a guppy for us. Not a huge deal since my kid LOVES fish so we looked around. I started to get more and more disgusted with this store. There were SO many dead fish. I think I counted about 10 just in the bottom 2 rows of tank my daughter was looking in - there are tanks above those I didn't even look in. Several looked like they had been dead for awhile. A lot of dead snails that were slimy and filmy so you know it's been awhile. Most of those were all in one tank so it was very obvious. Another tank had fish eating each other. The beta bowls were gross. I accidentally scared one when I looked at it and instantly felt terrible because when he moved quickly he stirred up a ton of sediment in his water making it cloudy. Several bowls had water that was starting to look discolored. I wanted to take at least 5 of them home with me to save them but my husband would have killed me haha. I decided I don't want to in any way support this store and started to leave. As I did a young male employee finally appeared. He did ask if I needed help but I told him their tanks needed some attention so I was going elsewhere. I told him I didn't know who was supposed to be working their fish department but they needed to address the number of dead fish in their tanks and the betas need water changes. He looked slightly taken aback but said he'd tell someone. My impression though was that due to construction this store is very understaffed and no one was actually even working in the fish area. So sad for the poor fish. If you want fish or anything fish related go to Aquatic Warehouse in Kearny Mesa. It's only about 15 minutes from Santee. read more

Petco has officially lost my business. I went in with my son to get a guinea pig. He was holding it ready to take it home. We have had guinea pigs for years and known them well. She asked if we had a separate cage for this guinea pig to separate her from our other guinea pig. Even though this particular pig was was in a cage with multiple guinea pigs in the store. When I told her no it was going in with our guinea pig since they are pack animals and love being together. This employee then took the guinea pig from my son and said she will not sell us "her guinea pig" unless we buy another cage Incase they fight. Long story short we bought a guinea pig from petsmart and it is doing great. This employee is the one with blue hair,I do not think she should have a job in service. read more

We made sure to ask the groomers not to express the glands because every groomer before told us they never will for a big dog because then they will have issues emptying out themselves. I was told my the lady on the phone that she will be sure they don't do it. When we went to pick him up we found out the groomer DID do this and now he can't express himself ever since then and has created a lot of issues for us!! Do NOT go here! read more

They are nice people, I get my dog food from there. However the pet training was bad. I brought my dog as a puppy to help with barking. Day two of training they told me they didn't think this was the best training for my dog. Let just point out that the trainer is the same employee at the register. The Employee is nothing but nice. I don't think this is the place for dog training. I think the store has been getting better in the last few months. They are remodeling. Today I went into Petco in Santee to pick up my online order that I placed. When I walked in there was a group of three employees having chitchat time and when I kindly went up to them and asked where I can pick up my store pick up items two of the three turned around to me with an attitude and one responded placing her hands on her hips and said front of the store very stern and bitchy very disappointing that an employee would treat a customer this way, Thankfully a man came up to me and helped me. read more

Unfortunately their vet doesn't accept vital care but she was very helpful. My husky puppy had some issues we weren't sure what they were and she did her best to make us feel comfortable. The other people working there were great too (super hard working and great attitude all around). Unfortunately they didn't listen when I said I didn't want him to be vaccinated yet (I vaccinate him myself and he wasn't due for his last set for another week) but they did anyways ‍ the workers on the floor on the other hand are some of the most helpful people ever. i had my dog groomed in petco. I mean dont get me wrong they did it really nice. But when i grabbed my dog and went home i notice my dog acting differenty. She got so much anxiety from the grooming, i dont know what they did to her inside. We even went in the middle of the night to the ER for dogs and the doctor said shes having too much anxiety, which never happens. read more

My husband & I took our two Frenchie's here for a bath. We received exceptional service from April & Alora. They spoiled my pups & April even painted my puppy's nails. I'm extremely impressed that she was able to cut them let alone polish them! Bailey (my pup) has had bad experiences with getting her nails cut so she is usually very difficult to get to sit still long enough to get the job done. Went in the other night ready to spend some money, and couldn't get any help for the life of me. The first ten minutes was fine, just sorta looking around, getting an idea of what I wanted. But after that, when it came time to get some knowledge and make a decision, there was no one to be found. I wandered around a bit, still no one. That's when I noticed the two girls on shift at that time were in the office having themselves a little nice chat, unbothered by the fact that they had a job to do. We came in here last night with our newest family member- a boxer/lab mix. We stopped in the groomer station first- I think her name was Dawn? she was a younger girl with blonde hair was the sweetest thing! She was super helpful and loving towards our puppy. We came in for a crate- to start crate training. The cashier names Kim was also extremely friendly. She helped us out with becoming a member with Petco and reviewed all the puppy training. I entered this store around 2:00 on a Friday afternoon to buy a joint supplement for one of my dogs. As I entered the canine section, I was greeted by an employee who asked if he could help me. He immediately took me to the product I was looking for. Also, I have had my cat's nails trimmed here several times. Their employee Lisa is a jerk. Seriously. Let me elaborate: I went in after work to pick up some crickets. I waited patiently for about 10 minutes as there were quite a few customers in the store at the time. When it was my turn to be helped, I explained to Lisa ( as nice and politely as I could.. I knew it sounded kinda first world/high maintenance ..) that I needed crickets without wings- basically those parts on the crickets get uneaten by my tarantulas which lead to a lot of hidden leftovers in their terrariums. During the spring and summer season it attracts ants in a matter of an hour or two (ants can kill my spiders if there's enough of them).. Yes I realize I have an ant issue that needs to be addressed which will be, but also for overall cleanliness and safety of my pets, I asked that I get crickets without the wings for extra precautions. She told me she can't get that for me due to wanting to preserve the safety of the crickets ( as she practically squishes one in front of me with her hand). I felt like the male employee wouldn't have had an issue with my request and that Lisa just didn't wanna be bothered with my request or be at work. She seemed really unenthused when helping the customers before me and I was kinda hoping she wasn't going to be the one helping me in the end. Besides, It wasn't like I was asking for 100 crickets. She ended up throwing probably the equivalent of 50 in the bag (I asked for 25) and expected me to sort it myself. Looking at the bag the vast majority of the crickets had wings. I walked out not wanting to pay for a bag of crickets that I ultimately won't feed to my pets for the reasons stated earlier and went to PetSmart instead. Not only do most of their crickets not have the wings, their employees are kind and take the time to make sure my request is taken care of and "get it" as to why I'm requesting what I am as a lot of them have exotic pets similar to mine. I work customer service too so I understand being tired and worn down by serving the general public. But how Lisa treated me after I plead my case was just unacceptable. The store was undergoing some construction of sorts. This Petco in particular seems to be lacking in variety of products. Compared to many other Petco's I have been, there honestly doesn't seem to be an array of dog products. I was in the back a good 20 minutes looking for this harness for my dog I saw online. I finally found it and made my way to the front. There was no cashier at first but then I saw this associate talking to some kids about some dogs toy. We made eye contact and she made her way to the register. She was very friendly and the reason for my 3 stars. If it weren't for her, I probably would have given a 2. I hook up my dog Chief with some good ass food! I usually come here to grab it. The price is fair and every once in awhile its on sale. The thing I really like is that they have a running promotion where if you buy 10 bags of food within a 12 month period, you get one free. Thats pretty cool if you ask me. Ive never really dealt with asking anyone questions while in there seeing is I just go grab my stuff and take it up to the register so I cant comment on the customer service. I found this Petco hidden in the corner of a strip mall. I decided to pull over and pick up some bearded dragon food. I was surprise to find out that this store has very limited supplies for reptiles and amphibians compared to Petsmart. They had plenty of cat food and dog food choices along with pet toys. Their aquarium selection and tropical fish selection is also very limited compared to Petsmart. This Petco is very convenient for cat and dog owners but when it comes to reptiles and fish, you may want to look elsewhere. The store is very clean and well organized. They have pet grooming/dog spa services. The staff is extremely friendly and very helpful. Again, this is a very large pet store that has a lot of dog and cat supplies which is understandable but for the size of the store I expect more supplies and selection for other types of pets. If your a dog or cat owner, this Petco is perfect...other pet owners will need to lower their expectations a bit but may find what their looking for. read more

For me this petco is the closest one to my house. staff have been nice to me and my dog. Just about every time i walk the dog i go through the store, lots of smells to distract him. I have never had any problems with the staff. They even whet out of there way to explain how all those discounts on the receipt work when i got dog food today. I buy BlueB it was on sale $5 off and i had two different coupons for $5 off each. if i ever see the manager for something ill put up a repost. read more

The employees here are so friendly. I called about dog training and the lady who answered was very knowledgeable. The price was reasonable as well. I instantly felt comfortable and wanted to take my dog to this location. My puppy Sierra is a 8m mini schnauzer and I wanted her to have some basic training. Niya was our trainer for the next 6 weeks, for 1 hour a week. She is very sweet, respectful, and knowledgeable. She answered all my questions and was helpful with other concerns I had. We were the only one in the class so it was a bonus I got a private for a group price. I highly recommend this Petco for all your pets needs. read more

This place completely sucks. I've shopped there for several years and only ever find myself here because of some dire necessity (like the goliath tarantulas need crickets before they escape and start attacking their human keepers...). Every time I visit, however, I hate it, and wish I never have to come back. Firstly, their employees never ask you if you need help, and like the employees of other PetCo's (and Home Depot, too) they literally run away when you walk towards them obviously looking for assistance. Secondly, they don't sell live mice. It's really hard to get a dangerous tarantula that likes the arterial surge of warm mammalian blood coursing through its fangs to accept a previously-frozen pinkie. Thirdly, I used to like going here a few years ago because I found that their prices were reliably cheaper than the pop-and-pop (it would be mom-and-pop, but they're gay) pet store down the street, but now it seems like they add $5-$20 to the price of everything just because people will spend virtually any amount of money on their nonhuman family members. Fourth, expect the line at the checkout to be ridiculously long, and each transaction to take a seemingly infinite amount of time. This place has never moved people quickly through the registers. Fifth, if you do your research, you probably know more about your pet than anyone in the store. Low wages don't equate to expertise, usually. Sixth, the place is chronically understaffed. I remember waiting 30 minutes for fish or frozen pinkies in the past. It's nice to see that our "excellent" baseball team has the name of such an "excellent" institution on their new, unearned stadium...it looks like San Diego's foremost loser brands deserve each other. read more
