I recently stopped in to pick up fresh frozen meals for my rescue dog. In terms of selection, the Just Food for Dogs refrigerators have about as much in stock as the location on 2nd & PCH, which will soon close to make way for new apartment units. There was a 20% discount for multiple packs when I stopped in, which is always a pleasant surprise! It's likely I'll be returning to this store to restock given the circumstances. The reason I'm not giving a higher score is this store appears to not have any accident stations (which about every other Petco and big box pet store has) and although my dog Darby is good with not peeing indoors, I caught him sniffing more than one spot during our visit. I would recommend they add one or two. Secondly, the first time I came, there was supposedly a 25% discount on all halfmoon bettas, which was not taken at checkout (my fault for not checking the receipt, but no big deal since it was only a couple bucks, right?). My second time, I'd placed an online order for pickup and the store cancelled the aquatic plant food - although there were multiple in stock and I rang up at the register. I wouldn't recommend coming here unless you want to risk losing your pet. We saw Dr. Anne twice at this Vetco location and our cat nearly died because of it. The first visit we brought our cat in for lethargy and lack of appetite. We requested testing for FIV/FIP and an Xray of his body to see if maybe he had ingested something since he has a history of chewing on non food things. Instead, we were sent home with an appetite stimulant (Mirtazapine) after he was given a vitamin cocktail shot in office and had one blood work panel done. We were then told ultrasounds were better than x-rays but weren't referred anywhere to get either exam done. After getting a second (and third) opinion, an ultrasound like she suggested, more blood work, a stool sample, and three weeks of Mirtazapine treatment with worsening symptoms, we finally went back to Dr. Anne to see what else there was to do to help our kitty. She told us she prefers "holistic treatments." Dr. Anne at Vetco Total Care Signal Hill then proceeded to give us a 20+ page printout of the website for Integrative Pet Wellness Center in Palos Verdes, an "alternative medicine" center that Dr. Anne was self-admittedly previously affiliated with, where they do "treatments" such as reiki healing, crystal therapy, and ozone therapy. When you look at their website you'll see it costs thousands a month for "concierge" treatments that have no scientific basis and certainly weren't what we were asking for. I've attached photos of the pages she gave us as both proof and to showcase how bonkers it is. Regardless of her personal theology, she took a job as a pet medicine specialist at an animal hospital and this behavior was inappropriate and dangerous. Thankfully, after reeling from what Dr. Anne did we got our boy to the VCA West Coast Animal Hopsital (10/10), where they were worried we would lose him based off the weight loss, muscle atrophy, and undiagnosed fungal infection that had been ailing him for over a month at this point. They were convinced he was an elderly cat dying of old age because of how advanced his infection was and how badly he was withering away in front of us. VCA had a diagnosis within 2 hours of us admitting him to their hospital and had him on a rigorous treatment plan within 2 days, which included hospitalization, a nasal-gastro feeding tube, and 4 meds multiple times a day. Putting aside all the pseudoscience she pushed, if she had done any of the tests we asked for at our first appointment they would've found the fungal infection and I know this because the Doctor at VCA told us she was going to start from the beginning and do every test Dr. Anne didn't do. First try, they did a full body x-ray and found the infection. I know veterinary medicine is a tricky field and cats especially can be hard to diagnose but if we didn't have the time, resources, or wherewithal for a new appointment every week, we would've lost our baby to Dr. Anne's negligence. Had it been just one thing, either she didn't run one test or she offhandedly mentioned the holistic center, maybe we could've let it go. But adding it all up, I can't write it off as anything other than someone who doesn't belong at the hospital or in this field. We were loyal to Vetco for 4+ years, getting all our kitties vaccinations there and taking our other babies there for appointments. The day Dr. Anne told us to go get reiki healing for our dying cat was the last time we'll be doing business with them. I hope no one else is unfortunate enough to get mistreated by her. TL;DR: Dr. Anne is pushing pseudoscience on vulnerable patients and shouldn't be allowed to practice in that office or at all. Go to literally any VCA location instead. read more

Found 3 dead frogs - 1 whites tree frog that's been dead at least a day if not longer (could literally see the skin decaying) and a few dead African dwarf frogs. The other whites tree frogs were dying because they hadn't been misted at all. They also put in a baby whites tree frog with adults (literally the baby was the same size as the crickets). Connie did a fantastic job grooming my two elderly dogs. The reason I did not give the review 5* is I was shocked by the total price which came to just short of $200 for the two; they are small dogs, the biggest weighs 18 pounds. I did not realize it would be this high when I dropped them off as I felt the only add-on was the nail GRINDING rather than the nail cutting that came with the grooming. Here's my complaint for Yelp. Bait and Switch predator! I was influenced into replacing a small cat tree today from an email from Petco, which stated 20% off by entering SITEWIDE20 as a discount code. Based on the sale, I went to the Petco website for Signal Hill and ordered the cat tree. When checking out, I attempted to input the discount code. However, the app would not allow me to input the code stating code was invalid. I took a screenshot of my order and drove to Signal Hill to alert the management of my failed attempt to acquire a discount of 20%. I spoke to the store manager who refused to give me the discount after my explanation. Consequently, I paid the full price of $89 for the cat tree. On Monday, I intend to file a complaint with the Dept. of Weights and Measures for LA County for the Bait and Switch tactics by Petco Management. In summary, DON'T SHOP AT THIS PETCO based on their false advertising!!!! They lost my business. And to add insult to injury I found one like it in Amazon for $39.99. read more

Took Axel for his first bath+grooming service today 11/18/24. Julian was his groomer and said Axel did well except when it came to cutting around his face and trying to buff his nails. I still think he did a great job with his cut given the circumstances. He recommended we bring him in every 4-6 weeks so that he could get use to it. I thought since Axel did pretty decent for his first grooming appointment, I'd buy him a treat. As I'm about to pay, Axel proceeds to go #1 ‍ I immediately apologize to Jhun who was the cashier and asked for napkins and cleaner to clean it up, he was super understanding and said don't worry about it, it's our job to clean it, let me call to have a caution wet sign put up. I appreciated that he offered to clean it but I definitely was not going to let him do that. Another employee walks up and Jhun explains to him what happened. I apologize to the employee as well and tell him I'll clean it up if they have the products and he says "oh. Well we have the stuff here" and goes off to bring me napkins, bags and a spray. As I'm cleaning and Jhun is ringing up more customers behind me, Axel decides he's going to go #2 ‍‍‍ I'm flustered at this point but thank goodness Jhun kept assuring me everything was fine. They have good selection here and I found what I needed but I'm checking out and they ask if I want a coupon for $5 off and I'm like sure and here's my email and then I'm signed up for some program that charges me $12 a month and gives me $5 coupons and it's a 12 month commitment. Like makes sense if you're buying for a dog shelter or something for a bulk discount maybe but it is such a scam for a normal pet owner. And then the app and the website you can't cancel the program. Emily is the BEST most patient groomer around!! We have a rambunctious labradoodle and he's pretty well-known to groomers in the area. His fur is fleecy & nappy but Emily really works out his kinks and has NEVER told us he needed a lazy "shave-down" like many of the other local groomers that want to "bathe and shave" any long-haired or curly dogs. Trust me, we've been to them ALL and we have stopped looking for any groomer that can top her. Doodles can be a tough breed to groom but not for Emily. We recently brought him for grooming but he had hurt his foot. We made reservations almost a week in advance but she remembered every detail I told her about his injury! She is so good with dogs. This review is only for the Signal Hill location! I really really really hate writing bad reviews but people need to know about this location and their unwritten policies to maybe save some time and frustration. My dog Wrigley has been a loyal Petco grooming customer for years (admittedly, partially because I love that I can book through the app but we've found some wonderful people through the process!) We usually go to Long Beach or Lakewood but due to availability we booked with Signal Hill this time around. We completed the usual paperwork beforehand through the app, making sure all of her vaccinations are up to date and on file, filling out the pre-check paperwork to book the appointment which includes the medical history and a release of liability for dogs with certain conditions. All good- check. Let's set-aside a couple of hours on a Sunday to get this done! But no, THIS Signal Hill location plays by its own rules despite their stated forms and stated policies which differ from all other local locations. When we showed up a few minutes early for our appointment, we were redirected to a polite woman who stated that "this location's policy" is they cannot see dogs with certain conditions. She cited the "policy" by showing the pre-check form with a box to check for heart murmurs (sweet Wrigley's minor condition). I gently showed her the language stating this was a release and not a statement refusing care for animals with certain conditions. In fact, by including that on the form as a release and setting the appointment with those details cited, it seems they were indeed accepting an appointment for an animal with that condition. She stated it was "policy" but had no other policy to cite and would not bend (she had her marching orders- it wasn't her fault). Ultimately, this was wasted time and opportunity and most importantly a disappointed dog who was inches away from treats but walked out of a pet store without one because we just couldn't buy one from that location (don't worry, she got one later!) There are plenty of wonderful Petco's and groomers within a couple of miles of this location. My 3-yr old Corgi completed Level 1 Adult and Level 2 Adult with Xavier Baca and LOVED every training session. At the time, I wasn't even looking for training sessions, but my dog and I ran into Xavier in the treats aisle and he was just so good with her. I could tell in that brief interaction that he'd have more to offer us. Xavier was incredibly friendly and made the training sessions a lot of fun. Most importantly, the results were impressive - my dog's behavior and confidence noticeably improved. Highly recommended! read more

When it comes to fish, Petco should be ashamed that Signal Hill is one of its locations. Go to the one in Long Beach instead - knowledgeable aquarists (some with 20 tanks), and they never sell sick fish. tldr; I wasn't going to write this review, but my husband and I had a horrific experience at this location on July 7, 2021 at 10:01 AM. The store employees are fantastic and professional; however, the manager is extremely unprofessional and does not seem to know Petco's return policy (it's 60 days and not 30 days, btw, but my return was denied anyway--30 days is for live fish). The betta fish are uncared for -- many with swim bladder issues, fin rot, and are suffering from ammonia poisoning. Please, don't buy your fish from this location. I routinely visit this store and pull out dead betta fish in cups and place them by the sink to be disposed of. No, I am not a Petco hater, and I've actually bought (not adopted, they don't allow adoptions at this location - go to the Long Beach or Huntington Beach one, where they allow adoptions) many sick bettas from this location to give them a good home. FULL REVIEW: On multiple occasions at this location in particular, I have pulled out dead betta fish from shelves and putting them by the sink, hoping that the employees will start to get the picture -- someone, one of your customers, is paying attention. I tried to give this store the benefit of the doubt, and continued to quietly pull dead bettas from shelves week after week. I wanted to give them a chance to improve living conditions for bettas before taking more serious actions. One week in particular, I saw an elephant ear male betta with popeye. I brought it to an employee's attention (I think his name was Ricardo...he's fantastic by the way, and I would vouch for him to take over as manager of the store), and asked if I could adopt the betta. He asked his manager, and of course his manager said no, and they treated the betta at the store. A week later, I see an elephant ear female betta that I had been monitoring for the past few weeks. She seemed to have swim bladder issues and could not float. Seeing as to how they do not allow adoptions (and also won't do anything about it, given that the betta had struggled to swim for weeks) I bought her for $12.99 - she is such a fighter and I knew she would die in the cup, so I gave her a good home. A few days later, I see another female elephant ear betta with the same swimming disorder. This time I asked Ricardo if I could adopt. I knew the answer, but just wanted to see if the manager would have a change of heart. Ricardo admitted the betta did not look good, but that his manager said no adoptions. He said I could pay for her and return if she did not make it. So, I did. I paid $12.99 for her, and took her home, where she's getting stronger each day. Finally, today. On July 7, 2021 at 10:01 AM, I attempted to return 2 used LED hoods to this Petco location. Petco's website states its 60 day return policy: Our return policy is simple - if you are not 100% satisfied with your purchase, you can return it to any of our Petco or Unleashed by Petco stores or to one of our petco.com warehouses. I am well within the 60 days, and the policy does not state whether the product has to be unused/unopened. Petco simply states they will accept the return if I am not satisfied. I also want to say that I hardly return items. Out of over $1000 spent at Petco in the past 6 months, I've returned less than $100 in purchases - all in brand new condition. This was my first opened Petco return. Yet, the manager denied my return, saying it was past 30 days (even though the policy is 60 days), and said "the items are in unsellable condition." He rudely dismissed me and walked away. I can live with the denied return because it was used. I'll try a different store, and if I can't return it, fine - but I will be more cautious about what I buy from Petco next time and may turn to Amazon as much as I can instead. What I cannot live with is that the manager is unaware of his own 60-day return policy, and rudely dismissed me, saying "the items are unsellable." I'm sorry, are the dead fish on your shelves "sellable?" How about the betta with popeye that I had to pull off? Or the two elephant ear females that had swimming issues? Or the multiple baby bettas I've had to stack on your sink to get you to pay attention to your fish? Do not tell me what is sellable and unsellable if you sell sick and dying fish. I rest my case now. I've got plenty of pictures and videos from previous weeks where I've visited the store and saw the horrific conditions the bettas were put in and have contacted corporate about the issue. More than trying to get my money back for an inferior product, I just want them to improve betta living conditions at this store (and, perhaps, promote worthy store employees like Ricardo to Manager). read more

I dropped my dogs off, when I came back, I gave the lady upfront the names and she rolled her eyes, her the first words out of her mouth were "your dog can't have vip anymore" then she proceeded to tell me that the groomer wants to speak to me about my dog. Very rude, I go to another Petco here in Lakewood and I have no issues, they love my dogs. Customer Service goes a long way especially when you are dealing with the care of our extended family. I've never felt so dismissed in my life. It was like because the Dr (asian woman with bright pink hair, i think dr tran and monica was the assistant) and assistant knew i wasn't going to be paying for the visit, they didn't want to help at all. The only reason I wasn't paying for the visit was because PETCO sent me a coupon for my first visit being free AFTER i made the appt. So they wanted to charge me 300 for a urinalysis for my 9 week old kitten because i think she has a UTI. I told them I needed to go home and talk with my husband about the cost but asked if there was any advice they could give me in the mean time for my kittens comfort. All they said was take her to the urgent care of she stops urinating altogether and told me to cut her nails. :/ It was the weirdest vet visit i've ever had and i've had cats and kittens most of my 47 years on this planet. I felt judged in their line of questioning as far as HOW i got the kitten, and i didn't even understand why those questions - daughters friend's cat got prego and we took one when they were 8 weeks old. Dr asked, oh did she just sneak out and get preg? I said i guess. Dr said, so we don't know who the father is - umm, obviously. Never in all my vet visits have I been asked these kind of questions. Look, my cats are fixed and I was helping my daughter's friend out by taking a kitten off her hands. Needless to say, I will not be going back here and I def will not recommend. I would have cont to go here and brought my others cats for check ups but they suck. There also seemed to be no compassion towards my kitten, no interest or anything. i've never seen a vet be so cold to their patient. they didn't even talk about vaccines for my 9 week old or anything. read more

A chain retail is retail so we all know what to expect from such. This is the review for Vetco. My folks are blockheads who don't believe in spending money for an animal to see a doctor. Now that I'm on my own, I can do what I want and do right by my pets. Vetco has made the whole experience of pet healthcare a lot less daunting than I expected. I don't have other vet experience to compare to but the prices seem fair and honestly a non-issue since I have pet insurance. The doctor and their assistants are always very kind to my pets which helps since I'm sure my cats are scared. Dr Bidot, for example, gives my kitten a treat to make it easier for her. They also usually send a text allowing me to check in early. It's always nice to be able to go in quicker in order to leave sooner. Other bonus points is being able to set appointments online. I sure hate calling and waiting on hold just to do that. I also like that the medical records are emailed some time after the visit. I look forward to when this Petco becomes a full service. I've only had great experiences with Lakewood Petco's vet service. I'm confident the doctors and staff at this location will do even better when they're fully equipped and have exam rooms. As much as I love the service I get at Lakewood Vetco, it sure would be nice to have the same but closer to home. By then, hopefully Signal Hill Vetco will be able to accept Care Credit too. read more

Unfortunately my dog's original groomer was booked up Petco had an available spot so I took him I asked him if his energy was too much and they said no they always handle puppies with lots of energy and they don't mind it if they feel like he was too stressed out then they would call me I never received a call but when I picked him up my dog probably had about seven Nicks on him his ear his legs his butt his belly his back they shaved him down didn't style it or anything he didn't smell like he's been washed but he was bleeding saying he came in like that and then saying that oh his skin is just sensitive his skin is not sensitive and he did not come in here bleeding it was the worst $114 I've ever spent it was the worst experience usually when I pick my dog up he's super excited happy to see me he was sad the entire day he laid in his bed all day even when I took him for a walk that night he wasn't even himself it wasn't until the next day when I got his energy back it wasn't until the next day that he was back to his old self I don't know what they did to him but I will never never ever be taking my dog back there and Petco is lucky that I still buy my food from there read more

Absolutely horrible!!! I ordered delivery through the app and DoorDash was the delivery service (which I didn't know). The DoorDash delivery was incredibly rude and disrespectful. Putting all the delivery issues aside, I called the Petco store to complain as there was no option to complain directly to DoorDash since the order was placed through Petco. When I called the store, I asked to speak to a manager and the lady who answered the phone immediately asked "why do you need a manager". Once I finally got to speak to a manager (Bob) about my experience he was so quick to defend "it's not our problem". I continued to argue with him that I ordered through Petco not DoorDash and they should take some sort of responsibility for the incredibly poor service I received since they hired DoorDash to provide the delivery service. He said if I had a problem I'd have to file a complaint to Petco corporate. Bob was so unprofessional and rude. How does Petco allow someone like that to become a manager. He was incredibly argumentative and aggressive with me. The professional thing would have been to simple apologize.... Which at no time did he do rather say "it's not our problem, if you want to make a complaint, contact Petco corporate office". I spend hundreds of dollars a week at this store which I will never again. Before I ended the call, I asked "who am I speaking to", and he said "I already told you my name was Bob". First time at Signal Hill Petco grooming with my puppy, Lily, 7 pounds. I made an appointment 2 weeks prior and asked for the puppy groom. When I spoke with groomer I asked to have just 1/2 inch off of top her long hair and just trim the facial hair. I was shocked when I saw her! Hair was shaved down near to the skin. Not sure if the groomer had a good comprehension of the language, but not what I asked for. Now Lily's skin is irritated and she does NOT look like a puppy anymore!!! Took my 16-year-old rescue boy in for grooming because he's skittish and sensitive to being combed and brushed. The staff was pleasant and seemed to do well with him. I paid for extra de-shedding because I thought the area around the base of his tail was a bit compacted, and I thought his skin was dry because he had flakes coming off when I scratched him. He came out clean and smelling nice, but...I feel like they didn't really brush him thoroughly because they missed something big. Every time I pet him, big clumps of shedding still come off, and after scratching him, I still found tons of black flakes coming up (which I have just learned are from FLEAS - I've never had a dog with fleas before, so I didn't recognize this until I just got a diagnosis). I mean, one pass with a fine tooth comb brought up TONS of flea flakes. Shouldn't a good deep shampooing have loosened enough of this for them to notice? Or as part of the brushing? It's pretty obvious to see. I will be finding another groomer for him, and my other two dogs who now require flea treatment as well. read more

It sudden me to write this yelp, because my dog grew up here in this environment that I thought would be their forever home to their grooming , but the fact that I have brought my dog in all year to nearby locations and other locations and not once was marked down nor is there any tracking information for Any Of My Grooming Appointment is insane . The amount of money I've invested in this store alone on just dog, grooming and supplies. It's crazy. I hate the fact that they're marketing strategy is false advertising and when you call their actual direct line, they say differently than the store does... I will no longer be bringing my dogs into any Petco... i've actually had to move my dog around multiple Petcos for the fact that I feel he was being mistreated, and he was scared to go back, but I still took my chances on bringing him because I met really good groomers that promised me otherwise, but after this interaction on the phone with the representative, I definitely will just go with my gut and stop coming here. Keep track of your dog grooming appointments because you're probably never gonna get that free one after the quote "11x" they're going to hit you with the runaround and a BS story . read more

I had a scheduled grooming service for my dog on Saturday, April 22nd, 2023, with Petco on California street in Signal Hill. My dog was supposed to have a bath and haircut. Five minutes before the service was scheduled to start one of the groomers on staff that day called to say they didn't want to do the service because there had been a note in their system from 3 years ago that my dog has seizures. We initially put this note in her file 3 years prior when she started to have some seizures ,but the Petco groomers just asked a few questions about her recent well being and continued to service her for many times afterwards. On April 22nd, 2023, I dropped my dog off for her normal service and was called 30 minutes later to come pick her up because the groomer didn't feel comfortable finishing her service because she was acting nervous. Well, don't all dogs act nervous at grooming appointments? Not only did they not finish her service, but they left her cut partially done, and she looked very unkempt and bad. I should have taken the previous reviews seriously. DONT GET YOUR DOG BATHED BY MEGAN. It's true, she will mess up your dog. I took my Maltese for a simple flea bath. She came in home with swollen red eyes and I'm so upset. I have never had a problem with her getting groomed but this was done so unwell, I'm sorry I took her there. UPDATE: I took my dog to her vet and he found an ulcer forming due to a scratch on her eye. She DID NOT have this before her bath WITH MEGAN. My poor baby is suffering and in pain. Worst experience ever. Petco needs to do a better job in how they hire their grooming professionals. read more

If I could give a minus star I would. I have a Bichon Frise, which I usually groom myself. But I didn't have time to bathe and trim her for a family dinner party so I decided to take advantage of a 20% first time grooming special at the Westchester location on Manchester and Sepulveda. What's the worst that can happen? Just follow the general pattern already established. It should have been a groomers dream. She had so much hair to shape and contour if you know what you're doing. The directions were simple : keep the head big, round, the body trim and the legs fluffy cylinders. A Bichon cut. We gave photo examples. We were very clear. What we got was a mis- shaped head, with short choppy hair. An ear sticking out. The entire body was sheared all the same length so her legs were sticks. A huge nightmare. I balled my eyes out. My cute fluffy doggie was transformed into a weird looking mutt!! I demanded a full refund and got it. I wanted Vincent, the manager at the Westchester location to see for himself what I was talking about, but he " was at lunch" when we arrived 15 minutes later. Now I have to wait until Spring for her hair to grow out to where I can rectify the damage. This groomer should not be allowed to groom long haired dogs! read more
