One word for this place... GHETTO This place really needs an internal makeover compared to PetSmart. It kind of smells too but unfortunately I buy my dog's food here. They're the only store around the vicinity that carries Natural Balance. Some of their staffs seems to enjoy their little rendezvous with each other if you know what I mean. If you are working in a retail environment, take your flirting offline and especially not in front of customers! If they can improve the decor and make their floor employees more professional, I would consider rating it 3 stars or possibly a 4. read more

I've been bringing my Yorkshire Terrier to get groomed by Addi (sp?) and she does such a great job. It took me a while to find a place and person who can cut a Yorkie without making her look like a rat. Highly recommend Addi if you have a small long haired dog. read more

Lots of empty shelves and employees didn't look like they were happy. Was here during the pet clinic hours and for the most part wasn't bothered by it...but one large dog was extremely aggressive and territorial. Barked and lunged at every dog that was in sight, scared my poor boy and made him overly reactive when normally he's happy and sweet with other dogs. Employees should have tried to handle situation instead of just standing around watching an aggressive dog make everyone else uncomfortable. read more

Petco corporate needs to give the store managers approval to donate to local events to a nominal dollar level. We're a senior mobile home park with 188 homes. We were having an event called Cat Crazy. I provided the flyer, the park map and an example of a column I write in the park zine that reviews local businesses to the Petco manager. She said I had to call Corporate in San Diego (I live in Sunnyvale!) to ask for a donation. She couldn't even donate a stuffed mouse. Though they charged me incorrectly for my grooming, it was promptly fixed by the manager, Sarah. I was charged for a medium dog, even if my dog is a mini schnauzer/terrier. She had matting and needed TLC. Our groomer took very good care of her and shaved her completely, and was able to save her cute face. She was knowledgeable and very sweet and kept me updated on how she took the grooming. I was very happy with my service and will continue to take my precious love here again. read more

So my wife was in your store today Francine the cashier she made a big deal about wife bringing up to the counter a full tray of dog cookies and a big bag of high end dog food ... over 80 fricken dollars worth. She acted like it's a big deal to bring up a tray of COOKIES! Wow ! She was very rude and argumentative to my wife. She done this in the past with my wife over store coupons as well. Seems weird that a retailer like Petco would argue and bitch about a tray of cookies brought up the cashier and a bag of dog food.... you should be DAMN happy we the customers come in and spend money there and help you stay open and pay employees so they can keep a roof over there heads. This Francine employee should be smiling and happy that we are spending are hard earned money at that Petco! We can and will from now on go to a Petco that does like shoppers to spend money at there location. read more

This Petco has gotten an update since I used to go. Clean and large, and they have one of the biggest adoption events I have seen. But it was so incredibly sad to see all the dogs that needed a home, barking and howling, pooping everywhere. They do have puppies, but it would be nice if they noted what kind of dog mix they were, age, etc on their crates. read more

This pet store makes you wonder why the store is open. It doesn't smell too good inside, doesn't open till ten AM, and it looks too crowded to move around the isles. Last time I was there and sitting with the adoptable cats, they were all sick with the runs and there was vomit near the litter boxes. I mentioned it to the caretaker and she said they looked fine, and must have eaten something that disagreed with them. The kittens in the locked up cages aren't completely vaccinated, so don't let your kids pet them. The healthy cats available to play with didn't appear to ever have been socialized. They don't run up to you meowing, they hide and act suspicious. I wonder why? Usually cats are meowing their heads off to get attention. They almost act feral. Creepy for sure. read more

I'm not a big fan of this store compared to before the customer service an selection of fish is not good an myself being an experienced aquatist im not impressed by how the fish look including the bettas which were very listless an or dying so hopefully after spending 60 bucks plus for 3 fish including supplys for them they survive this store needs to hire experienced people that know an care about what they sell an start caring for what they already carry I miss the old crew that was working there many yrs back at least they knew what they carried an cared for what they had I see it if this store don't wanna care for what they carry then stop carrying them an turn the store into a feed store instead of a pet store or shut it down completely read more

I was really excited to see Ashley when I brought in my dog to be groomed, but came to find out that she is no longer at Petco. This was very sad news to us because she knew our dog by name and took perfect care of him and groomed him perfectly. There is a new groomer now and I was trying to be open-minded, but the entire experience was terrible. Her customer service, attitude, mood, kindness, and grooming skills were are undesirable, to say the least. I felt bad leaving my dog there and should have listened to my gut... We miss Ashley so much! Obviously, management made a poor choice because I will never return and I have told everyone what a lousy experience it was for my dog and my family. read more

They have an extensive selection of everything to take care of your pets here- especially cats and dogs. There is an adoption center here too although I'd go to the pound and save a life before coming here. If you're looking for special stuff like timed auto feeders or fancy toys, you might have better luck online. They have a grooming and boarding center here too and every Sunday, Luv My Pet comes from 2:00 to 3:30 to give shots for your cat or dog. I found they are most reasonably priced to vets and other big box retailer pet stores. I recommend you get here a little before 2pm though. People start lining up quick ,and although these people are nice enough, the process is not very efficient with the paperwork and only one vet to give the shots. read more

This Petco is great. We come here to get Bubba's nails clipped and they always do such a good job. His nails grow so fast and are sharp so we also get them buffed down when he comes in. They do a great job very quickly so you can browse the store while you are waiting on your pup. They do drop-in or appointments for grooming. There is an adoption pin in there with kittens and puppies. Also, if your dog has an accident, they have stations so you can clean up after your pup! read more

We brought our puppy (Teddy) for the first time to be groomed by Christine. Christine did a great job being thorough and most importantly being patient with Teddy since it was his first time. Christine also stated that she would leave notes to the next person that would groom Teddy if she was not available. It is usually difficult to find an employee to help you in this store and if you find one they are usually not helpful. The cashiers are always rude or indifferent. It sims like a policy for hiring a cashier at that specific store; are you absolutely incapable of good costumer service? Hired! However after wondering around the store a bit, I always find any item I came to buy, even when it's missing in other stores, and even though their prices are on the higher side, they have an excellent returns policy which mainly scored them the three stars. read more

I hate this Petco. If you haven't shopped at petco, they do not operate like they are the same company. Each petco is essentially their own company. The Livermore petco was supposed to return 2 items for us and give us 20% off our entire purchase. In the end, the cashier forgot to put the items back into our bag. Human error happens, the people are always nice there so that's fine. We go to 3 different petco and none of them have the bowls we want. We call the Livermore store and they give us the SKU. We ask if they can honor it off of 1 $8 bowl. They responded with if it happened here they would take care of it. I look down at the coupon book and there is a 10% off and I say what about this. They tell us they will charge us when the item comes. After they say goodbye we ask...so what about the bowl? They then tell us to write down our information to notify us. Anyways, the manager was nice about rejecting our request, but the overall experience left a major distaste in my mouth and pretty much confirmed that they could do it. But they just did not want to. It's never about the money or the $2 I would have saved. It's the principle. Do yourself a favor and shop somewhere else. read more

I always bring my dogs at Petco in Sunnyvale for years. The techs are great, especially Liza. I'm disappointed ever since they hired a manager who rejected my dog. Liza was wiling to groom my cockapoo but had to ask permission from her manager. As soon as the manager touched my dog's fur, she rejected my dog and told me to bring my dog to the vet for grooming in case there's a rash on the skin. My dog doesn't even have rashes nor any skin problems. I brought my dog to them to have her groomed! It's very frustrating when the manager rejects my dog knowing that in the past, the groomers never had a problem with it. Matted hair or not, they've never had an issue. This location rejects dogs with mild matted hair; they are incapable of doing their job! Never again will I go back there. I made a grooming appointment with PetSmart and they are gladly taking her in. read more

I know Petco has been vilified by many as being noncaring of their resident creatures, and generally, being a soulless version of Walmart for the pet store circuit. But....I got my pet rate there 6 months ago, and I saw no evidence of abuse or filthy living conditions. And my rat has had no respitory issues, which are common for their kind. I must say that the workers here seem fairly interested in animals (which seems to be a fair prerequisite for working in a pet store, yes?) And the prices for items like bedding and food are pretty good. Sheryl (at the Sunnyvale Petco) is a wonderful groomer. She made sure Whiskey was comfortable before we left. She had groomed him before and was ready to respond to all our questions. The length of time was longer than ususal, but that was due to staffing issues, so I do not put that on the grooming staff. I was also informed of this at the time of drop-off and that tells me that the staff understands true customer service. Whiskey was ready and looked amazing when we came to get him. Unlike other times at a groomer's, he wasn't straining on the leash to get out, but walked very contentedly. THAT is something I prize. This was a wonderful grooming experience (again), and we'll be back!! read more

The worst Petco I have experienced, went there to get a couple ghost shrimps for my daughter, notified the staff at the cashier, she said someone will come shortly, my daughter and I waited for about 17-18 mins, nobody showed up. It was a Monday, we were the only customers waiting at the aquarium, finally one guy who looked like the management person walked pass by, I complained that we have waited for 20 mins, and he responded "no, it has not been 20 mins, I'm sure someone will come", and just walked away. Waited another 4-5 min, still nobody came to us, eventually I decided to leave and will never come to this petco again. read more

This store is huge but has hardly any cat toys. So weird. Why do they have so much dog stuff? Petco by Saratoga is better for cats.

I highly recommend this pet store! This is such a great place. The customer service is the best I have ever experienced in a pet store. The selection and size of the store is also really nice. I had nice and attentive help every time I asked for it. You can tell that everyone that works here is really caring and passionate about their job. For example: Miguel- helped me find the brand of dog food I wanted. He grabbed a shopping cart for me and helped me put the dog food into the cart for me. Sarah- helped me look for different clothes, collars, dog accessories, and gave me advice on what comb I should get for my dog. She was super helpful and nice. Francine- Was at the cashier station and topped everything off by being really nice and signing me up for the Petco membership card. Even though I live over 40 miles away this will be my preferred pet store. Based on my experience here - I will also bring my dog here for the pet clinic and dog grooming. read more

The puppy I wanted to adopt got transferred to this Petco from HSSV which was a 20 minute drive from where I live. When we arrived the staff told us our puppy was still available to adopt or hold, however they couldn't help us with the adoption process that day because it wasn't within the time frame and asked us to come back early the next day. The next day I called petco before leaving to see when the adoption center opens and the worker told me 12pm, I even asked twice to confirm it. We got there at 12pm only to find out our puppy had already been adopted by someone else right when the shelter opened at 10:30am... when the petco worker said 12pm. We're super devasted and heartbroken that their mistake led us to losing our puppy. read more

Update 5/18/08: Went here today to have my dog groomed again. I was a little nervous because the women who used to groom him (and loved him) have left. There was a new lady who hasn't worked on him before. She did a great job! She was very nice, cut him exactly how I asked. Better yet, the cashier went out of her way to help me too. I had a coupon from a competitor for $10 Off Grooming. I asked if they honor competitor's coupons. She wasn't sure...but she tried a few tricks on the register and was able to pull it off for me. That was very kind of her and showed outstanding customer service. ----------- I've had no problems at all with this Petco. We take our dog there to be groomed avery 2 months or so...and they usually always do a great job. There's one particular groomer who loves our dog and loves when he comes in...she always does a great job with him. The shelves are usually always well stocked and they have plenty to choose from. It's your typical Petco. As for the staff, I haven't had any of the problems other reviewers have...they've been friendly to me. My dog gives it 4 paws up. read more

I adopted our sweet little kitty Nutella from here....Sunnyvale location of the Humane Society out of Milpitas is in this Petco I like to stop by and check out all the cats for adoption when I come in to pick up kitty supplies. No dogs in the adoption center and the kittens go fast. Store is clean and the employees are nice and helpful. Good selection and reasonable prices. Plus they carry the only toy my kitty will even touch. Only complaint was the bathroom was kinda in a weird location and had a funky smell. Please consider adopting a cat from their Humane Society branch or your local shelter!!! read more

6 months ago I adopted two kitties from this Petco. Originally going in for one, I was convinced I should adopt two on the spot because the nice counselor Allison told me that it's not much more work and will greatly improve the happiness of both cats. Considering this, I felt like I should and I picked up my kitties Pandora and Bvlgari on the spot. It was the first of the month and the previous month they had a promotion for adopt two kittens for the price of one. I didn't have much money to spare so I was wondering if they could work something out with me so I could also bring home the second kitten, but there was no discussion about it. I then asked if we could have two coupon books for supplies - one for each kitten - and she said that wasn't possible since I was adopting them at the same time. That is to say if I adopted them in two separate transactions, it would be possible. It seemed ridiculous and inflexible... I really wish the adoption center could have tried to understand me and accommodate me a little more. However, I'm happy with my two new pets though I had to scrimp a little elsewhere to pay for everything from Petco. The store staff is absolutely brilliant and helpful. They are so nice with recommending products, finding inventory, and good with accepting returns. Prices are decent although online shopping is almost always cheaper. Bottomline: This is a great store for your pet needs. Staff is competent and generally helpful. The adoption center is not based around customer service, but that's okay in my book. If you're adopting out of the goodness of your heart, it should be okay to you too. read more

I prefer Petsmart employees over PetCo but the people that work here are pretty nice from what I've experienced so far. This specific store though is pretty cool because they have an adoption center in their store but it's open during certain hours. I noticed they also have more variety on things than Petsmart such as scratching posts (overpriced) and some cat toys. Sadly though, I feel bad for the birds in this store because they are stuck behind a glass wall so they can't play with anyone. At Petsmart I was able to play with one of their friendly birds. So the bird was more sociable. These birds seem super shy or scared. Also the hamsters here are so HUGE. I guess no one adopts them so I'm pretty sure they are all adult (or just really fat.. or both) lol It is one of the better PetCo's I've been to since I've had bad experiences in other Petcos so I'll be back! read more

I took my puppy for grooming at this location and Sabrina the store manager came out and said we cannot groom your puppy because his vaccines were from a different state. I felt like I was getting rejected because my puppy is from somewhere else, mind you they have groomed him before and I had an appointment. I looked over Petco policy and it doesn't state anything like that. I didn't know that Petco likes to discriminate other people because they speak a different language. I ended up taking my puppy to the one in Santa Clara and Nikki is the best. Now employees like Nikki and her crew should be at every Petco. read more

First and last time using this service. I brought my 12 pound puppy in to get a full service hair cut and specifically said my main concern was the length of his hair as it gets very thick. 3.5 hours later, they tell me he was too nervous so they won't finish his grooming. They ONLY cut his nails and trimmed his paws in those 3.5 hours. He's had multiple hair cuts before yet when I came here, all of a sudden, he was too scared? Doesn't seem right. My dog literally looks the same, I could have given him a bath myself instead of having to pay $30 for whatever they did. read more

This review is for the Humane Society of Silicon Valley here. They occupy a few rooms in the back of the store. I always visit this PetCo when going to Safeway to look at the cute pets available. That said, I'd rather adopt a pet from a shelter if possible. The other day I checked out the Humane Society rooms in the back and spotted the cutest red and white guinea pig in a cage on the floor! Allison, the adoption counselor working there, quickly noticed my interest and didn't hesitate to pick the guinea pig up and let me pet him! I left to go to Safeway before coming back and adopting the little guy! Allison was friendly and we completed all the paperwork pretty quickly. I'm pleased that they had a very accurate guinea pig care sheet included with the adoption papers. About a week later, someone e-mailed me to follow up on the adoption, which was also nice. I highly recommend adopting from HSSV! The adoption also included free vet visits for a time period after the adoption, although I didn't take advantage of this since my guinea pig had been vet checked the day before his adoption, anyway. Now I just have to find my guinea pig a buddy and life will be perfect! read more

Petco in Sunnyvale is one of the worst stores I've experienced. Their phone rings, and they don't pick up. At 10:50 a.m. 5/10/17 the phone rang and rang, then someone answered and connected me to Grooming (I chose #1 for Grooming to begin with). Rang about 26 times, then hung up on me. They aren't Internet sophisticated either, so you can't book an appointment online. They owe me money, since they never gave me the remainder of my pet training sessions after they fired one of their trainers with whom I was working. I can't say anything good about them. Please do not visit this Petco. This Petco is managed by Anika who refuses to communicate with patrons via phone calls. I literally heard an exchange in which this store manager deliberately hung up on a person inquiring about their store policy and exclusionary practices. This store decided to profile young people and even became abrasive and aggressive towards said young people just because the store decided that selling certain invertebrates and fish is somehow "not allowed." Way to go Sunnyvale Petco - your entire company is well known for participating in unethical practices and yet still chooses to stock each store with half-dead beta fish and other entities. Yet, this store and Anika decide what is truly unethical is selling fish and snails to young people? How hypocritical and unprofessional and just plain bad practices with regard to communication. Also, the young folks alerted me to the fact that prices have now deliberately increased so as to deter future shoppers. Go elsewhere for your own sake. read more

My favorite store associate has gone missing. Where is Francine? She is always so kind and helpful. Best customer service and knows her product. We purchased a hamster and Francine rang us up. She cautioned and informed us about wet tail which is common for hamsters to get when they get stressed. Ours ended up with it, and without her heads up advice, our little girl wouldn't have made it. Fortunately we caught it in time and we called Petco, and they took her back and they nursed her back to health for 3 weeks and then she was healthy and happy and we finally got to take her home! Older store. Very helpful and friendly employees. They had very happy attitudes and I had at least three ask me if I needed any help while I was browsing. PETCO's prices are fairly high, but this is expected from a pet specialty store. The animals cages were extremely clean and they seemed healthy and happy. There is at least one employee here that won't honor Petco printed coupons. I'm on the mailing list and occasionally receive coupons from the company. Went to this store to redeem two offers and the employee refused to even scan one of the coupons. The reason? The bag of food I wanted to buy (the flavor) did not match the image on the coupon which was silly because you can't expect them to print out an image of every single flavor of the brand, right? The other coupon was rudely ripped from the hand with a response of "You can't use this one anymore in the future". While true, there was definitely some unnecessary attitude. I'm a little annoyed that I had to waste my time and gas going to this store only to go to another neighboring Petco that had much better customer service (and actually honored the Petco offer). TLDR: The employees at this store may give attitude and not honor Petco coupons. Go elsewhere. read more
