Every part of this meal, from the tuna tartare and crab cakes, through the pan roasted duck and trout almondine, to the flourless chocolate torte and pumpkin cheesecake was outstanding. The prices were not unusually high for a restaurant of this quality--we would pay as much and likely more in Portland Maine (a great restaurant town). We will definitely return. read more

Consistently delicious. Zach and his chefs are fantastic. It's a favorite for my boyfriend and I, and it's usually our choice on a special occasion. First of all, let me just say. Location, location, location. What a beautiful ambiance had to offer. For an appetizer we had the duck liver pate. It was downright quacktackular!! We arrived at 8:30 p.m. with no reservations and hoping for a table but there were none available. Fortunately the owner greeted us at the door and suggested that we dine at the bar. We started with sauteed escargot and they were really, really good. Next came the house salad: fresh mixed greens, light vinaigrette and a generous accompaniment of crumbled blue cheese. Then we ordered roast duck and lamb chops for our entrees. The duck was tender with crisp skin and the lamb was succulent. Both were served with a fresh vegetable mix of haricot vertes, wax beans, strips of carrot, wilted spinach and slices of vinegar beets. If Peter Havens was in Boston, or another big city, you would never get a seat at this place. Happily for those of us who travel to Southern Vermont, you can get a reservation. And so you should. The food is wonderful, with an ever-changing menu, and the wine list is very nice, with "Affordable" to "Celebration" choices. Add to that great hospitality and it's a winning evening. If you're looking for a special night out, Peter Havens should be on the top of your list. It is leaps better than the comparable options in Brattelboro (i.e. Fireworks, Whetstone Station) and has a nice, romantic atmosphere. The chef, Zach Corbin, is creative and just simply makes delicious food. The staff was also very professional, and when our server couldn't quite find the right wine for me, the bartender came over and nailed it with his first suggestion. His food cart just outside the restaurant also makes the BEST french fries I've ever had--seriously. read more

The pate was amazing!!!! The night we went there was a T-bone steak special, it was cooked perfectly. We had chocolate mousse for dessert. It was divine! Our waiter was very handsome too!! Took my parents here for their 40th wedding anniversary a few months back. They forgot to put in my Mom's order so instead of admitting it right away, they told her it would be right out. What came out was a barely cooked piece of salmon that was raw throughout. Two other people in our party also ordered the salmon so it was clear how it was intended to be cooked. Also found a shorty curly hair baked into our fries. Usually things like this don't bother me that much, but for a $400 dinner, I would expect better. read more

My boyfriend made reservations for my birthday on Saturday 3/2616 for this restaurant. We arrived an hour early, but that wasn't a problem, they had our table ready and we were quickly seated. The hostess was very polite and the waitresses very attentive. My boyfriend and I ordered the soup of the day, which was the the French onion soup, it was delicious! We then ordered our entrée, the waitress mentioned that there were some changes to the menu for the evening which was fine, we wanted to try something new. So we proceeded to order, I ordered the house-made potato gnocchi which came in a creamy porcini sauce, and he ordered a braised lamb shank that was shredded and served over house-made fettuccini in a creamy ragu sauce. We ordered dessert, I had an amazing vanilla creme brûlée and he ordered the chocolate mousse. Dinner was exceptionally good!! We hadn't been to Peter Havens since the new owners took over. Our group of four was made up of two brand new patrons, one previous patron, and one old regular with a bar stool plaque. From the moment they brought us wine, through the raw oysters and duck pate apps, through the duck and the lamb dinners and 2 specials, through the 3 different desserts we shared, this meal was out of this world. The food was perfect and the service was delightful. My old regular spouse was very fond of the previous owner and wasn't in a hurry to check this place out after it changed hands, but I'll say that our fears were off the money. When in the area Peter Havens is our go-to for dinner. The staff is welcoming and accommodating. We have never had a bad experience. Oysters always fresh, soups tasty. We tend to order fish dishes, and they are adequately spiced and nicely presented. Nice selection of desserts and a good wine and drink list too. We went to Brattleboro for a romantic getaway, and our lovely Bed and Breakfast folks recommended Peter Havens. WE WERE BLOWN AWAY. This place oozes comfort, class, and taste. The host is co-owner and his partner is the chef. You will feel as if you are in someone's home being served by an ever gracious family. The liver pate was to die for, I could have licked the plate. Everything from start to finish was phenomenal. My boyfriend was so amazed by the butter that he ordered more bread just to continue to eat it!! We were surrounded by the artisans of Brattleboro and the other tourists who were just as mesmerized as we were. We were one of the last tables to leave and Tom, the host extraordinaire chatted with us as if we were friends. He learned that we were fans of Will Ackerman and gave us a new CD hot off the presses because "Will is a dear friend and he would want me to pass it along." We found this gem on a stopover in Brattleboro. Excellent food with tasty combinations of flavors and ingredients. My husband's duck liver pate was the best we have had outside France and NYC, and our fish dishes with risotto were delicious. The staff was friendly and helpful. Don't bother making a reservation or going because they aren't organized enough to keep reservations case in point, my 12-year anniversary fiasco. Made reservations six months in advance as per recommendations from Forty Putney B & B to celebrate our wedding anniversary the first weekend in June during the strolling of the heifers This coinciding with the Stroll made making the reservation in advance even more important since the weekend is booked solid. Called the restaurant 2-days in advance to save the trouble of them having to reconfirm with us only to have Tom the owner inform us that he did not have our reservation and that I must have called TJ Buckleys instead (we had reservations booked the next night at TJ Buckleys) so this was rather insulting especially as I plan our anniversary celebration each year with extreme attention to detail. He then offered us a 9:00 table because of course he could not take ownership of his mistake and figure out a solution to right his mistake. Furious - such awful customer service! My message to all you foodies in Boston and New York is to skip this place since they clearly do not have their $&@ together. Dine at TJ Buckleys instead since the food is sensational and they know how to run a restaurant. Thanks for the anniversary surprise Tom! Won't ever be coming back! read more

we returned after a long absense.........mussel appetizer was perfect....plump, sweet, plentiful with a lovely rustic broth.........my wife's rib eye was large, tasteful and perfectly prepared....as usual, the service was professional and welcoming.......i think that the young chef his found his stride.......we'll return soon. read more

The staff are personable and sweet and the atmosphere is just lovely. We appreciated that we could hold a conversation without straining our voices. The food, for the most part, left us flat. My husband really like the caesar salad. It's served with duck confit instead of anchovies which sounds groovy but really isn't. It's a heavier flavor and a tougher texture. I had the garden salad, which was over dressed. By a lot. Dinner was pheasant for me, because I'd never had pheasant. I suspect that it was not created in the Peter Havens' kitchen (nor did the mashed, or whipped potatoes). It just tasted packaged. My husband had the roast duck. That was good... Fresh, rare and served with a really beautifully spicy lentil side. We both had the haricot vert (green beans... And I loved that our wait person amended the french with the english when she was describing it.) as a side veggie. They were nothing to report home about. We split a warm apple tart which, again, felt imported from some factory kitchen. It was overpriced. My advice? Head out to Hope & Olive in Greenfield Ma. The food is awesome but you do have to strain a bit for dinner conversation. read more
