Interesting little venue. Went up to Brattleboro to spend a day with my boyfriend and when we drove down the street, came across this place and opted to try it. Very dated on the inside but I think that's supposed to be part of it's "charm". We were one of maybe four parties (all less than 3 people in each) and the server, who was a semi-nice older woman, seemed SO lost and overwhelmed for the place not being busy. Very frazzled and it took a while to get drink refills and the additional sauce we had originally ordered with our meal. The menu isn't vast, so don't go in expecting to try something new. We opted for the Vermont burger, and the Double Smash burger. They were....eh. Nothing to write home about. Being known for their fresh ingredients (according to google) I would have to disagree. Kind of creepy. 5:30 pm on a Saturday and we were two of six people in the place. Musty and dated bar area with a nice fireplace (which I think provided the only heat in the place). Food was edible but not great. Server was very nice and attentive. "Out" of all diet soda (Coke company didn't deliver (possibly due to outstanding debt? Just speculation on my part but seems fishy). I have had two negative experiences here. The first occurred when I went for breakfast on my birthday. We arrived, were seated at a table out of the way and waited to be served. The waitress arrived after 15mins. We ordered tea. The water was not hot, but the real issue was that we placed our order and then waited and waited. People who had arrived 30 minutes after us were getting their orders but not us. The waitress eventually checked in the kitchen and realized the ticket had gotten lost. We finally received our food an hour and fifteen minutes after ordering. The second time was today. Easter brunch. We had 1:00 reservations. We ordered our food and almost an hour later still had not received it. When we noticed that multiple tables that had arrived after us had gotten their food we questioned the waitress. She checked with the kitchen and came back and said it was because they had a thirteen top in the other room. Which did not explain people who had arrived 20 to 30 minutes after us getting the exact same types of food we had ordered before us. We finally received our food at 2:25. The whole meal was expensive and honestly not worth the wait. $94.00 before the tip for eggs and French toast for four people with no alcohol. The waitress was very nice and tried to help us, but after two terrible experiences we will not return. read more

The menu does not have a big selection. The photos on Yelp of the inside is the atmosphere that caught our eye. I never checked out the menu. Very small menu with no kids menu. While we were there a couple came in with two young children, got seated and shortly got up and left. The woman at the bar said OMG to a waitress, are they leaving since they hadn't been seated for more than 10 minutes. The waitress said yes then the woman shock her head at us flustered. We planned to have dinner there but there was Nothing on their small menu that we were interested in so we had a drink and left. I don't know if they were short staffed but while sitting at the bar having our drink we observed a lot. The phone rang the woman answered it she said do you have a reservation because we are only taking reservations. That was absolutely crazy since the restaurant was empty. There were 3 rooms besides the bar area that were empty. The couple that came in with the two young children with no reservations obviously were seated in the bar but left after 10 minutes. Well our drink was good but we will not be back for dinner. Ambiance great because of the decor which was also nice. That's all I got. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of the menu to post. This place gets a bad rap from out of towners and I don't get it. It's quaint, traditional, and has great service. It's dated inside but that's part of the charm. I had hands down the best fried cauliflower of my life here: so perfectly crispy and not greasy at all. HUGE portions so I had to take the rest home- heated up well too! I also ordered the burger. It was a bit too large and meaty for my personal taste but it was cooked perfectly and well seasoned. Just a great local spot that feels very quintessentially New England. I recommend! read more

Five family members and I had Thanksgiving dinner this year (2025) at The New England House restaurant in Brattleboro, Vermont. It was my sister's idea, who I guess was tired of hosting the big meal at her house in nearby New Hampshire. We had made a reservation for an early afternoon dinner and were promptly seated when we arrived in the cavernous, rather dark and dingy dining room. It was a chilly day, so the roaring fire in the dining room's fireplace was welcome, the strong odor of woodsmoke hanging heavily in the air notwithstanding. But you got used to it after a while. Service was a bit slow, but our waitress, who appeared to be the only one on duty, was friendly and accommodating. We ordered a charcuterie board, which seems to be a popular trend on social media these days, for the table to start with. What finally appeared was certainly not up to the elaborate constructions pictured on Instagram and TikTok. It was a rather small (for six people) platter of a bit of thinly sliced ham, a few pieces of salami, a couple of small jarred pickle spears, a wedge of soft cheese, and a few toast points -- all very tasty but posing no danger of ruining your appetite for the main meal to come. I thought the toast points, which were warm and crisp and spread with some kind of savory flavored butter or oil, were especially good. And I should also mention the complimentary basket of freshly baked rustic dinner rolls that came with the appetizer -- crusty on the outside, yeasty and chewy on the inside -- very good. Except for one contrarian who ordered the baked salmon for her entree, we all had the traditional Thanksgiving turkey dinner. This consisted of the usual suspects: three small slices of turkey breast and some shredded dark meat moistened with a spoonful of brown gravy and accompanied by a bread and sausage dressing, a little mound of mashed potatoes, and a few steamed vegetables. No cranberry sauce, though. I wouldn't characterize the portion sizes as especially generous, but ... adequate for what was essentially a mid-day meal. The best thing on the plate, in my opinion, was the dressing -- moist and flavorful because of the sausage, with crispy bits from having been baked in the oven to add some texture. The turkey was okay if somewhat dry -- a common malady. The mashed potatoes were undistinguished, a bit watery and underseasoned. But there was a salt shaker on the table to fix that problem. The rather tired-looking vegetables were there mostly for decoration I think. There were three pies on offer for dessert: apple, pecan, and pumpkin, all served with a dollop of freshly whipped cream. Our waitress said the apple pie was baked that morning in-house (the other two pies being conspicuously omitted from that description). The apple pie's crust was tough, requiring some effort to slice through with a fork, but had a good flavor. The apple filling was sweet and nicely set without being mushy. My sister thought her slice of pecan pie had too much of the custard filling and not enough nuts, although the proportions looked about right to me. And my other sister thought the pumpkin pie was good, if perhaps a little too heavy on the pumpkin spice. To sum up, then, our Thanksgiving meal at The New England House was perfectly okay, if not outstanding in any way. The cost of the dinner averaged about $30 per person including drinks (wine, beer, soda, and one cocktail) but not tax or tip -- maybe a little on the high side considering the quality and quantity of the food, but not totally unreasonable. What makes mediocre victuals special, though, is enjoying them together with family and having a good time. read more

They like to seat people in the bar area. The bar area is extremely outdated and borders on gross. They have carpet in an area that serves food it's cringy. That being said, I had to send my mussels back as they were very fishy instead of fresh tasting. The wait staff accommodated me. read more

They forgot one of our tables meals, was completely unapologetic about it and then forgot to bring the side when it finally came. Clam chowder was awful. Was not a cream base and very little flavor. Got the fish and chips. Fish was super greasy and thrown on top on the fries and they were soggy. The fish was not crispy. The first thing you notice upon entering the restaurant is the musty oder. The wait staff are excellent. Unfortunately they informed us that they were out of fish for fish and chips. Also out of scallops. The menu online doesn't reflect the current one. We settled for the chicken saltimbocca. The chicken was overcooked to the point of being dry. We just had an absolutely delicious, excellent Turkish meal made to order for a group of 12. The mezes , kebabs and dessert were all truly Turkish and spiced perfectly. Kurt and Selma, the owners, not only provide great food and service, but also visit with the customers as they can, and are great hosts. The restaurant is a perfect spot for a mid week evening meal at the cozy bar, or for a planned dinner for a larger group as we had tonight. It was a great meal for a special occasion. We made reservations for 5 for Fathers day after church, we got there had to wait 15 minutes to be seated. It took another 20 minutes after seated to see a waitress. We put in our order for drinks and food 25 minutes later they come back to tell us two of the orders they were out of, still no drinks so we change the two orders and ask for our drinks again another 10 minutes pass and most of use got our drinks with the exception of one. Another 30 minutes pass and our food comes minus the fruit that was suppose to be on the two orders of waffles and no syrup. The food is cold and not very good tasting, We had been there for a hour and 40 minutes and we have had enough we put money on the table and walked out. Worst service I have had at a restaurant in over 50 years of eating out, the waitress clearly didn't know what she was doing and I don't know if my two dogs would have eaten our food that is how bad it was and they will eat about anything. Cold Waffles with no syrup or fruit easy over eggs that are well done and cold home fries that taste like they came out of the freezer and were never cooked. Sausage and bacon burnt. I do recommend not to waste your time at this place this was our second try here under the new ownership and both times were about the same poor food and worse service. We stopped here on a whim. The decor was very odd and dated, and my seat was sticky. We ordered appetizers, because the descriptions sounded delicious on the menu. We were wrong. The Point Judith calamari was indelible. It had clearly been fried at one point, but was rubbery and soggy by the time it got to our table. It seems as though it was microwaved after it was fried. I could go on and on with similar descriptions about all of the dishes we tried, but I think you get the point with the calamari. I have no idea what was going in this place. Chaos is a word that comes to mind. We stopped by for Sunday lunch on our way to Stratton, ignoring our usual millennial instincts to check the Yelp reviews first. First of all, the hostess seemed frazzled from the minute we stepped in the door. She also seemed entirely unsure where to seat us and acted a bit like​ our presence was unexpected. Our waitress, Jolene, was very friendly but would disappear for long stretches of time. We ordered the Vermont burger and the VT BLT. Both of us are huge cheddar cheese hounds, so we figured this would scratch the itch and fill us up before an afternoon hike. Little did we know, we'd be waiting so long for our food that our hike would have to be postponed. Now, I hate complaining in restaurants but this entire experience was bizarre. Our seat close to the kitchen revealed a very, very upset chef and a waitstaff that was completely overwhelmed. Tables around us complained about undercooked food, incorrect orders, ​and general long waits. It was uncomfortable to watch. A huge party of bikers arrived and were seated while we were waiting for our very simple lunch order. I can't imagine how long this party of ~30 waited for their food -- seeing as a sandwich and a burger took nearly an hour. I watched the hostess turn away 3 parties at the door after the biker party arrived, probably for the best. I saw the chef shout at our waiter. I saw another cook console a waiter--"We'll get through this." Our food was okay - nothing terrible, nothing special but for some reason,​ both sandwiches lacked cheddar cheese. Given the general bedlam, we didn't even bother complaining. We won't be back. read more

We were a bit skeptical as it looks dated from the road, but read so many good reviews, that we thought we'd stop in. The menu is comfort food with a flair, but I think that everything is homemade. My husband had the Beef Goulash soup and claimed it's the best he's ever had!! I had Ricotta Vegetable Gnocchi that was AMAZING. The restaurant has a dining room with several tables of different sizes that will acommodate even a large party - like your office party, for instance - and then it has a larger room with a large square bar and tables. The food is more good than bad, not innovative or extreme, but reliable. I've tried the place many times now and never been surprised, but also I have never been disappointed. There is a lot to this place, which is why the reviews vary widely. I decided to try many different areas of the menu before writing this, so my discussion is not based on one visit. The service is good - attentive without being obtrusive. The chef organizes themed nights, so there is a lot of variation in the menu and there are daily specials. I did have one unfortunate incident on a Saturday night when the dining rooms were packed. The kitchen backed up and I didn't see my dinner for almost an hour after ordering. I did not have to pay for my meal, but I also did not hold back from expressing my disappointment because I had been out all day, and I was tired and cranky and was trying to get home. An hour delay was a drag. Staff began with lame excuses, but ended up sympathetic. In my opinion blaming it on a backed up kitchen might work once, but ultimately kitchen management should be reviewed if they can't handle a full house. On Saturday nights the bar fills with regulars and has a low key party atmosphere, which I like. With a name like The New England House, travelers can expect a traditional American meal served professionally, and that is what they will get. We came across the New England House unexpectedly on our drive along Rte 9 through the National Forest. The duck breast with wild hen risotto was tender and seasoned perfectly - unusual and delicious. My husband said the shrimp scampi with linguini was "just awesome". We didn't get menus for 5 minutes after being seated, they gave us the wrong sides than what we ordered with our meals, the actual food was far below par, they charged me $12 for a $6 drink, and charged us $18 on the check for an entree which the menu listed as of $16. I arranged with the New England House for a huge Turkish dinner to celebrate my mom's birthday. She's not from Turkey, but loves the food. Because she's now wheelchair-bound, we asked that it be ready to take out. Once my grandson and I arrived, it came from the kitchen, bagged and boxed -- dish after dish. My grandson and I whisked it to Mom's where a crowd was ready to eat. I come from a foodie family, including vegetarians and pescatarians. All were delighted with with the seemingly endless array of kebobs, stews, house-made flatbread, appetizers, etc. The price was reasonable and the quality and timeliness of our order enhanced a wonderful family gathering. We were delighted to find a place that could accommodate our large party (10) on a Saturday night. The food, atmosphere, and service was great! My daughter loved the seafood pasta (scallops, mussels in the shell, and shrimp). The beet, goat cheese, and apple salad was my favorite! Highly recommend this for any occasion. I wasn't expecting spectacular, just a good solid New England dinner. And beyond the salad, I do expect things to be cooked. Especially fish things coming from a place where sushi is not on the menu. What I got was a piece of mostly raw (RAW!) "broiled" cod and a watery baked potato that I think was pre-cooked a week before it hit my plate. My husband was treated to a prime rib swimming in some artificial beef flavored jus type of thing, and mashed potatoes that were similarly flavored. When the server removed my raw fish - after my husband had eaten his whole meal - we didn't see much of her before that - she offered me "something else". Well, if she'd asked me that before he'd downed his meal, I might have said yes, but after he's done? What's the point? Sit for another twenty minutes wondering who's spitting what in my food only to be presented with another piece of raw or strangely flavored something or other? I declined. Nothing was taken off of the bill in spite of the clearly RAW fish on my plate. I was too tired after a long day on the road to make a fuss, so here I am on Yelp, hoping against hope to spare another from a similar fate. Just head to Whetstone Brewery or the Royal Diner. We drove past thinking this will be an upscale expensive restaurant, but when we decided to check out the menu it wound up being much cheaper then expected. I think our burger & fries were 6.99 each. Its a large restaurant, steak, seafood etc. ($12 and up) we just happened to get burgers which were quite inexpensive!.. Delicious food, relaxing atmosphere and nice staff. I don't know what happened to this place. My wife and I were here 3-4 years ago and I had the best Prime rib I've ever had. Then we went back last week (9/25/19) We had to wait to be seated then wait for menus even though there were only 6 other people in the place ?? Then much to my dismay no prime rib on the menu so had to settle for steak tips. They were good but only Luke warm. Went to use the men's room and had to side shuffle around a table of 6 People and the door was only 4' away from them. That was awkward. As I was using the men's room I got to gaze up at the stained and sagging Ceiling tiles. This place was on our favorites list But not anymore. Oh well. read more

Positives first - Cozy place to enjoy food. Good service. We went to the restaurant when the kitchen was about to close. The waitress warned us about that and took our orders quickly. They did not bother us even when it was a few minutes past the restaurant's closing time. We left when we suddenly found out that it was quieter than when we entered the restaurant. I really liked their "basil crusted garlic chicken" . The New England clam chowder was a big turn off though. It was salty and tasteless. Took a long time to get wine and appetizers so not a good place if you're looking to get in and out quickly. Food was very good (excellent Reuben) just not happy waiting 25+ minutes for appetizers, 30+ for wine and over an hour for 3 Reuben's, a cheeseburger, and a BLT with soup. Great restaurant- all food made fresh in house (including the bread and brioche buns!), food locally sourced & menu updated daily. Advertised as 'fine country dining" but the menu was very diverse. We had clam chowder (excellent even in 90 degree weather), pulled pork sandwich (delicious, maple glaze was outstanding and the bun perfectly toasted and homemade), and scallops and risotto with sweet corn, topped off with rhubarb cheesecake (worthy of the descendant of a Brooklynite who grew up with NY style cheesecake) and coffee. In COVID times, it's worth noting the large side covered porch with well-spaces tables, and the careful practices of the staff. If you are traveling Rte 9 near Brattleboro, anywhere near Molly Stark State Park - do yourself a favor and stop here for lunch or dinner! read more

Upon arrival the hostess warned us that the service would be slow because the kitchen was swamped--this was absolutely accurate. It wasn't the fault of the wait staff. Our waitress was very sweet and helpful and overall provided good service. Prices are super reasonable and the food was good! Not out of this world but a great meal that my party of 6 all enjoyed. The veggies and sides were delicious. I had a steak which was a bit lacking in seasoning but was cooked well. I would recommend coming here if you don't mind dining at a leisurely pace. read more
