After being a customer of Peter Suchy Jewelers for 20+ years, we have recently decided to move our business to the jeweler down the street. We have visited several times in the past 2 months, and the staff has been rude, impolite, and difficult to work with. Gone are the days of Peter walking to the storefront to pleasantly greet us. Our recent experiences have included miscommunication, conflicting answers, delayed orders, and accusatory staff members. Was it the passing of Peter that caused this quick downturn? A shift in management? There's no way to know, but I hope the store realigns itself with the values of their prior years. Peter Suchy provided unacceptable options for a diamond center stone. Below are reviews from Rare Carat of two diamonds Peter recommended - one of which had a hole on the surface. The prices Peter quoted me for these stones were $7,500 for the 1.28 E SI1, and $11,500 for the 1.10 D VS2 -- not including the setting. The total cost for each diamond in a platinum setting would have been $9,000 for the E and $12,500 for the D. Rare Carat Report for 1.28 E SI2 Round https://www.rarecarat.com/diamond-report/fb1ac64b-192d-45e8-9e90-57dbe9264479 "Hi! I have taken a look at the GIA graded Round you sent our way. I see it as a 1.28ct E SI2 with GIA #2205301086. I would pass on this diamond for a few reasons. First is the cut grade of good as well as good symmetry. This means that there are major issues here that will cause a massive amount of light leakage. Also, the table and crown angles are outside of the ideal ranges. I recommend getting an excellent cut as well as at least very good for polish and symmetry as this will maximize the light return and brilliance. It will also remove these red flags in the proportions. There is also a cavity inclusion here. They have a beautiful selection but many of the items are very overpriced. Like I have seen similar items at other jewelry stores in New York for not even 1/2 price of what they are charging. I have been dealing with Peter Suchy jewelers for a couple weeks now and my experience has never been less than complete professionalism. My fiancé and I have been looking for a vintage ring for some time and I noticed that most of the rings on the 1st dibs site that I thought were classically beautiful, even if they weren't the right ring, we're being sold by Peter Suchy. His collection is exquisite in my opinion. I spoke with one of his jewelers over the phone at length before I made my purchase. She was so patient, helpful and informative with all of my technical questions about old mine diamonds, GIA ratings vs other ratings etc etc.. The ring we got was truly one of a kind and so special. And even more beautiful than the pictures. Shipping was lightening fast to receive the ring (overnight shipping) but also to have the ring sent back to be sized. I sent it out for Peter Suchy to size, and 3 days later I had it back! I've been dealing with them over the phone and the associate Mike was so helpful, as was Peter Suchy himself, who's consulted me over the phone and sizing. The size I gave them still feels slightly too big but they are going to continue to size it until we get it just right, no questions asked, no problems. All I wanted was a new battery in my watch, I am a machinist but didnt have a watch wrench. I should have bought one. I watched him use a pliers to tighten the little function knob on the side of case, and even warned him that it should only be finger tight. My jaw dropped when I seen the pressure he was using and when the threads let go his wrist snap. Sure enough he had stripped out the threads and bald faced lied when I exclaimed it. To this day I don't know if deliberate or stupidity. This cost me $175 from Seiko for a new case, he wanted to charge me to fix. No thanks! read more

I have 2 negative experiences with Peter Suchy. 1st: A few years ago I paid Peter to resize my grandmother's WW2 nursing ring and replace a tiny jade stone in. It took over 4 months for me to get the ring back. When I got the ring back the stone was replaced, however, the ring was not resized. So I asked him to complete the project. A few weeks later the ring was resized, however, the jade stone that I just paid him to replace was now broken. Clearly his team did not take the stone out before resizing the ring and the heat cracked the stone. He never took accountability for this and basically took my money. I should have learned from this experience however, I like to think that everyone makes mistakes from time to time and to not dwell on them; I also like supporting the local economy. 2nd: The 2nd negative experience I had with Peter was to create my engagement ring. Upon coming into the store I was shooed away out of the store. I told him that I was just visiting my family and would only be in town for a few days. He told me he was busy that day so I did not think much of it at the time even though I thought it was a bit rude to treat a paying customer in this manner. I looked past it because everyone can have a bad day, artists can be moody sometimes, and I also have a goal to accomplish so there was no time to dwell on such things. After a short phone call he agreed to create my engagement ring. The creation process was very frustrating. I told him exactly what I wanted and even showed him pictures. I would wait a month, sometimes more, and each design left out features that I specifically showed him in the pictures. This went on for a for over 5 months. Finally, he says to me that its really difficult to design a ring over the phone and email which I thought was ironic because he shooed me out of the store in the 1st place. He also explained that it was costing him too much money to redo the designs. Fair enough, but then please follow the instructions that I have clearly written with pictures and call me if you have any questions on the matter; do not wastes months of both of our time. I told him my thoughts of which he got really emotional, dramatic and halted the project. He was so worked up that I was actually worried that he was going to damage my stone out of spite so I just played it cool; he has returned to me a broken stone in the past with my grandmothers WW2 ring and refused to replace it so I did not want to take any chances. Also I do not understand why it costs him so much money for ring-CAD designs when he told me months earlier that he has a subscription deal with a ring-CAD designer so I thought it was weird that he was telling me a completely different story later. When my mother picked up the stone, he told her behind my back, that she should still do business with him anyways, which I thought shows poor form on his part and speaks volumes of his character. He also included the most recent ring designs. Again, just like all the other times, there were features that were blatantly the opposite of what I wanted. So for example I emphasized many times (in writing via email, over the phone, and with pictures) that I wanted a half bezel and the newest design he gave was a prong setting. This just confirmed to me that he really does not care nor listen to his paying customers and much of his anger and frustration is ego based and self inflicted. He took an experience that is supposed to be exciting and special (ie: designing my engagement ring) and really turned it into a negative experience all around. I regret insisting that my mother, my other family members, and friends use his services over the past decade (I did so because I love supporting the local economy). I cannot begin to tell you how much business I sent his way; never again. Treating people well and with respect matters. The justification for his high prices should be good customer service. Also, the reality is that his prices are highly inflated for what you get. He mostly sells old and used (ie: "estate") jewelry pieces of which he charges well over real market value for; don't let him fool you with his "book value" talk, its an act. My friends sold him jewelry of which he flipped for over 7-8 times what he bought it for. I am not going to tell you to not use this jeweler. I am merely expressing my experiences with him; clearly I am upset and felt wronged by him more than once. There are two sides to every story so perhaps his side will validate his actions towards me but I doubt it. If you do consider using this jeweler, I highly recommend you educate yourself via google, jewelry forums, other jewelers, and also shop around before giving him your money for services rendered. *hint: always reject his first offer because its not a fair price. read more

Peter Suchy may have an extensive collection of antique jewelry but to me feeling like a valued,important customer far outweighs the jewelry selection. I brought my grandmothers diamond ring there wanting to reset the over 2 carat stone in a unique setting designed for me. The first time I saw the new setting I was immediately unhappy because he had not listened to my design wants & had reused the original band in the design. He promised he would fix it & make it a real a "showstopper" design now that he understood what I wanted. The alterations he then did really changed nothing but the thickness of the band. I was unhappy with the results. I had it done over and it was okay but still nothing like I had described or envisioned. At that point, since I did not insist on a mold or drawings prior to the execution I reluctantly paid for the new setting (quite steep I might add). Several months later I went back into the store to look at antique wedding bands to match the period of my grandmothers ring.I asked if Peter could come out from behind his desk in the back room to show me a few selections.The sales lady went back to talk to him but she came back out & told me he was far too busy doing "estimates "to be bothered. He neither acknowledged me nor waited on me and never seemed to care one bit. Not even a greeting & a few words to let me know he was occupied at the moment but would be happy to help at another time. I might add my husband had also bought both my daughter and me diamond earrings there as well so I would say we were very good customers. I called the next day just to let him know I was disappointed with the service when I came in. I was very cordial & said it in a polite manner. He proceeded to let me know that if I was that unhappy I shouldn't bother to come back. He told me he doesn't need the added stress of customers like me. So basically no matter how many thousands of dollars you spend with them everyone is equally treated like crap. All I was wanted was his help and advice in purchasing another item. Peter is rude, arrogant and needs a refresher course in customer service 101.You can have the most wonderful merchandise but if customers do not feel valued, your reputation suffers.I now buy my fine jewelry in stores that actually want my business and that appreciate my patronage. First off, I'm totally shocked with the poor reviews for this place!!! My now fiance and I went here a couple years ago to look at vintage estate engagement rings. We had researched many of the rings on their ebay site before coming in and I had written down the number for at least a dozen of them. One of the salesladies was kind enough to go into the back room and print off pictures of each of the rings I selected on their ebay site. Then, the owner himself came out to help us look at all the rings. He really took the time to listen to what it was that we wanted. He even ended up suggesting a smaller, less expensive diamond since it looked better on my small hands. Think twice before shopping there!!! The owner is extremely rude and the store is very pretentious for being in a strip mall. I thought I'd go there and get a fair deal on some jewelry and it turns out they are extremely overpriced and when I explained why I wasn't going through with my transaction, the owner basically threw me out of the store! That has never happened to me and I was shocked. After telling the story to my co-workers, it turned out that one of them had a very similar experience. We've had some negative experiences since our first visit. No person or business is perfect, sometimes the question is whether something is truly a mistake or an intentional business practice. If you are purchasing an item in the store (vs online), make sure you check whether they have that item posted online for sale and if they do, confirm that you aren't paying more than that price. They have an eBay store and also list on other sites like 1st Dibs. We discovered that a piece of jewelry we were going to buy online was listed for significantly less on their eBay site. After apologizing to us and offering us a $50 discount (which was kind of insulting) we eventually accepted that it was an oversight in their part. We however decided not to purchase the piece due to an overall negative feeling we had. Since then I have been told by my friend that this has happened to her multiple times at this store. We're not talking a dollar or two but sometimes hundreds of dollars difference. Having said all this, they do have some stunning pieces and lots to choose from. read more
