We were going to find another place, however, they said how about a hot chocolate or a tea. My friend is vegan and inquired if their hot cocoa was vegan, as most places have dairy in the chocolate. The cashier went to look at the chocolate syrup and also had another person look at it to verify it's vegan. My friend ordered a hot chocolate with oat milk. Even though it was busy, we only waited about 5 minutes for her drink. We appreciated the effort to double check it was vegan, though I do wish they had decaf options.

Now, you might wonder how a place that serves a four-dollar lunch gets four stars. Allow me to explain. No, that will take too long. Allow me to sum up. They are friendly: Gum, the owner, will greet about half the people who come in by name. They are fast: Order a cheeseburger combo for five bucks, and you're eating it within five minutes. They are welcoming: You'll see a huge cross-section of people ranging from congresspeople on down. And the food is largely good. I usually get a cheeseburger combo, which is exactly as you would expect from a short-order grill. But the specials are sometimes inspired (ask for the homemade carrot dressing), the French toast is as good as anywhere on the hill, and the pan-Asian vegetarian fare is a fun break from monotony. Caveat: I have only had breakfast here and get there as soon as it opens so . . . The menu is simple and abundant enough for a small diner. The service is great - fast and friendly. The owner/workers are quick to see to your needs and your food is in front of you in 5 minutes (literally, today it was 5 minutes). The food is hot and plentiful. A plateful of omelet, home fries and toast with coffee is $10. This is the SMALLEST restaurant you can imagine so it does not take much to make it crowded. But that's OK, it's still a diner, open at 6am so you can power up early in the morning, or maybe it's just real real late from the night before.......
