I would have given this place a perfect 5-star review had I gotten an decent service from the cashier lady upfront because this is a very nice locally owned small business grocery and fruit shop which could be considered a gem in this residential neighborhood. The problem was the whole nonchalant, unwelcoming attitude of the cashier lady who didn't even say a word to me when I brought my groceries upfront. It didn't have to be an elaborate "Hi, how are you? Did you find everything okay!" greeting; just a simple "Hello" would have sufficed. She kept watching the TV right behind me up above (kind of close to the ceiling) while taking out my groceries out of the basket to ring them up. She then stated the total and took my debit card (it was only $8.58.) She then nonchalantly said "Thank you" once the whole thing was done but she immediately went back to watching TV as if she couldn't care less about my presence and business. There were other reviewers who commented about the questionable service they received when they shopped here. Despite the quality of produce and meats they carry as well as how reasonable the prices are here, their unacceptable service diminishes the quality of the store and its reputation and it almost makes me not want to come back ever again. It seemed that this cashier lady was only greeting to the regulars. Not okay!! At this time, I can only give it a 2-star rating. The only reason why they are not getting a 1-star rating is because I saw quality in the produce and meats they sell and they (especially the produce) are reasonably priced. read more

I drive clear across town once a week to shop at Petes. I go there for the best gyro meat and homemade Tzaziki in all of Colorado. I have been shopping there for years now. I have grown to love the owners and employees like family. I cannot imagine buying my gyros meat from anywhere else! We've been going to Pete's for decades. Worth every minute of the cross-town trip. Good produce. Beautiful flowers & plants for the garden. And, last but not least, incredible meat market. We bought baby back ribs this time. Not cheap but worth every penny. Also, Pete and his wife are there every time we go. Yesterday there was a couple in the store not wearing masks, even after she told them it was a requirement, pointing to all the posted signs. These people ignored her, continuing to wait in line behind me. Owner/cashier look exhausted and beaten. I told her I was sorry. She gave me a soulful look and just said "It is so hard." How many times did she have to do that on a Saturday? I am grateful they're there. I want to do whatever it takes for them to make it easier to stay open. I realized my inconvenience at wearing a mask has become a common courtesy. Not personal freedoms. I wear a mask just as I would take off my shoes in someone's home if they were muddy. Yes, I could say it's a freedom. It's so much more. It's common decency to make their life a little bit easier in a time when everything is so hard. read more

Oh wonderful neighborhood Greek market/deli/international market. Lots of amazing finds at this grocery store and market. I love the selection of international cheeses, olives, snacks, candies, spices, pastries, a wide variety of different olive oils, sauces seasonings, herbs, jams, jellies and so much more. The produce is so incredible and so beautiful! The deli has some premium cuts of meat. This market also has a wide variety of different types of breads and freshly baked goods. They also have a grab and go area for meals. I love that they have feta, gyro meat, and taziki ready for people to take home and enjoy. The staff is very friendly. I managed to drive by Pete's because I was looking for a USPS drop box. It was on my mind to go shopping for a friend's housewarming gift, and the plants displayed out front caught my eye. This answered my hopes! I parked right in front and checked out their greenhouse and outdoor shelves. I found a medium-sized succulent display that was absolutely stunning, then I went inside to pay with my credit card. While standing in line, I checked out all the delicious-looking European snacks. Definitely coming back for those. My experience here was super seamless. My favorite part of this trip was watching the regulars come in and interact with Pete. Whether they were buying groceries or plants, it was neat to see what Pete has built, clearly over many years. Fantastic little local market with produce, some cheeses and milks, no perishable goods, a meat market and some lovely fresh-made Greek dishes. It's clear this a family run place and they showcase their Greek heritage in what they supply. I got fresh dill for cheap, Lemons, and some fish and was very pleased with the price of them all given how expensive everything is now. Attached to the market is Pete's Liquors which has a really good liquor selection and a smaller wine selection but it's a small shop. The guys that work there are always quick to give tips and recommendations so I'm happy to come back to this one stop shop any time. read more

A friend recommended Pete's to us and we found ourselves in the area this past weekend. This is a great neighborhood grocery that also has a plant nursery and liquor store next door. The grocery store offers international brands and out of the typical grocery selection. It's small but mighty. I went to fill up a cart of hanging baskets and flowers to fill my pots at home, but there are no prices on any of them. I was planning on spending a few hundred on plants, but who knows what that would be, so I left. I guess I'll go to Ace or Lowes like I originally planned. The deli counter is packed with delicious greek food... roasted veggies, salads, spanakopita, dolmas, soups and so much more. There is a meat counter and a great produce dept. Well, switch it to Pete's store on Holly Street and you've got a pretty good idea of what this place is like: a friendly little neighborhood grocery and butcher shop that even sells flowers to beautify your yard. The produce selection changes based on what's available and in season. The prices are fantastic! Sometimes the fruits and veggies are really ripe so you have to be careful not to choose something that is past its prime. But you will always find excellent deals on all sorts of goodies up and down the isles. The meat selection is outstanding. We've tried several tender and delicious cuts of local, grass fed organic beef and we pretty much have stopped shopping elsewhere for meat. The chicken comes from Red Bird Farms and fresh lamb is sourced from a local farm. Pete's also makes sausages in-house with some unique flavors like chicken jalapeno and Greek with olives and feta cheese. I think salmon is the only fish offering and we've always found it to be fresh and wonderful. The deli also carries some prepared salads and Greek treats like spanakopita and baklava. And there's even a gelato counter! Scattered throughout the store are tons of local brands like Sweet Action Ice Cream, Savory Spice spices, Boulder Canyon Chips, Noosa Yogurt, Haystack Mountain Goat Cheese, Jerry's Nut House candies, Clarks Honey, and locally raised eggs. You can also find lots of imported Greek products that I don't know the names of because I can't read Greek. You can put together a fabulous picnic or charcuterie board with all of the cured meats, cheeses, breads, pickles and crackers at Pete's. Fresh cut flower bouquets are located by the cash register and when the season permits, a portion of the parking lot houses a mini-nursery featuring all kinds of annuals, perennials, and hanging baskets. There's definitely a lot packed into this little store! The owners are super nice and friendly. They will help you find whatever you need, ring you up, and bag your groceries. Me and my friend came to Pete's one day to get desert for our family and fill up on snacks for a movie. While shopping there were NO price tags and we figured it would cost around $20-$30. At the register we encountered a very rude cashier. The woman was being very obnoxious and vicious and didn't like us from the start. When she told us the amount we owed we were flabbergasted and shocked! They were charging 60$ for a bit of candy and some cookies. We politely asked if we could put some items back, but the woman completely ignored our request and kept asking for our money and other things. She was confusing us and never gave us receipt. After we left she ran out screaming "Empty your pockets!" and accusing us of shoplifting. We are very sad to have to write this about Pete's because PETE himself is a very generous and kind man. It's a like a Farmer's Market all year long. With a wide variety of produce, fresh feta, dry goods, bread and other things you'd find in any other grocery store - what I feel makes Pete's Fruit & Vegetables noteworthy are the amazing prices! I was very impressed by their Colorado grown Asparagus bundles for super cheap. The customer service is also pretty good. The check out line can be long at busy times, but they have things like fresh pineapple samples to help you wait. I recommend stopping by to buy specific items you intend on preparing in the next few days, especially if you need a wide medley of produce. After all, it's called Pete's Fruit & Vegetables for a reason. Right now they have lots of plants and flowers outside for sale. It looks like they also sell pizza but upon each visit have never been in the mood for a pizza. One of these days, I'll be sure to give it a try! read more

I've lived in the area for about four years and just stopped by Pete's for the first time about two months ago. I could really kick myself now for not stopping in sooner. This place is AMAZING! The main reason I hadn't been here sooner is the name of the place - 'Pete's Fruits and Vegetables'. I thought that's all it was (plus a small garden center since you can see all the flowers while you're driving by). Did I know that they have delicious in-house prepared foods like gyro, moussaka, pastichio, keftedes, spanakopita, dolmas, roasted lemon potatoes, Greek ratatouille, rotisserie chicken, ribs, tzatziki, hummus, soup, etc? No, I did not. Did I know that they have sweets like baklava and galaktoboureko? Nope! Was I aware of their fresh meats like steaks, pork chops and house made sausages (think loukaniko)? I had no idea. And their fruits and vegetables? FRESH! I bought some fabulous (and real) tomatoes a couple of weeks ago. They also have cheeses, olives, fresh herbs, breads, and a small section of grocery dry goods (think olive oil, dried beans, etc.). The first time I went in I think I was there for close to an hour. This is a small store that's packed with so much yumminess I could barely contain myself! Fairly amazing neighborhood greek specialty shop...with a big BUT. Pete is a nice elderly man...his elderly wife who works the register is so darn miserable. I kill her with pleasantries and kind words, and have yet to get her to smile, all I get a forced "thank you". The photo on Yelp of her smiling must be photoshopped. :-) Yes, some of the veggies/fruits are old, but not always. But there's many other reason's to go here. It's really a gourmet store/sandwich shop/butcher/prepared foods, etc. They really have everything. Some prices are a little high, but others are right where they should be. The large selection of fresh feta is reason enough to go - BUT!!! they put it in a plastic bag - REALLY?? Feta needs to sit in brine or at least a bit of cold tap water. The first time I forgot to transfer feta into a container with some water at home....a week later it was disgusting...had to toss out....should have taken it back. Hard to understand how a fine specialty greek place has no clue how to properly sell feta...but at least it's exceptional. Just ask them to put it in plastic container with 1/2 inch of the brine. Jeez, they're Greek!!!...they clearly know that feta turns bad if kept out of water...but yet they don't seem to care what happens to your feta after it leaves the store. read more

A friend of mine encouraged me to visit Pete's. I went one evening with my daughter in tow and absolutely fell in love with the place. I wandered the (very wee) aisles of produce, dancing an unchoreographed dance with an older Orthdox Jewish man who had evidently had a very bad day. He harumphed his way around the fruits and veggies, snatching up produce with gusto. At one point, he shuffled right by me and farted. Not even kidding. When I was checking out, Pete (presumably) talked me into buying "the sweetest cherries in Colorado!" He was wildly excited to hear that I'd discovered the place through word of mouth and that I wasn't from the neighborhood. He turned to his coworker and immediately began a monologue: Hear that!? Word of mouth! That's right! That's how it gets started. And she's not even from here! We're getting big now - you just wait! He was SO genuinely excited; I couldn't help but be excited for him. He made me promise to come back again, wooing me with the promise of fresh pineapple on Thursdays that they core themselves at the back of the store. If you want a personal shopping experience where people smile at each other when they walk in the door, and you appreciate a guy who definitely exhibits pride of ownership, look no further. Awesome little grocery. You can't beat these prices. There is a large variety of veggies and fruits. This might not be the nicest looking produce around, but not sure why anyone would care about that. There are a few other random grocery items and a small dairy section with milk and some cheeses. Pete's also has a case of fresh made baklava and other Grecian sweets. I mostly buy the produce, that's what you come here for. And something else I come here for is Sweet Action Pints!! Yippy Skippy for that. Sweet Action is my favorite. I'm not sure where else in town you can buy pints other than here or the on site. It's so rare to find a place that you actually enjoy shopping at. Yes, the selection is not the greatest but once you're at the registers that doesn't seem to matter. My first experience with Pete's was years ago. I came in gathered up about $10 worth of produce and walked up to the till. After being rung up I whipped out the trusty debit card to be told they don't accept cards (they may now...I don't get in very often and always bring cash). Panic set in as I don't often operate with cash but I was told to take my items and come back tomorrow with the cash. Huh? I suppose less honest folk would peace out and never come back but I was there bright and early with cash in hand. This made me a life-long customer. Any place that has that kind of trust and care for their patrons deserves my business. So for the past seven or so years I make it a point to stop in at Pete's and show them a little love. I just moved from California and found this place on Yelp; Originally, I was looking for a new one-stop grocery rather than buying from King Soopers or Sprouts. The veggies were cheap, the fruits are decently priced, and the store owner (who I'm assuming is Pete?) was so very kind and accommodating. When I was about to check out, I asked him if there were anymore blackberries (because there wasn't any to be seen) and he went to the back, called me over, and showed me a tray of beautiful blackberries. For the price of awesome price of $1, I got one. I asked how much a dozen of eggs were, he told me the price (2.99), and I kindly declined. I purchased 2 green bell peppers, 1 red bell pepper, bananas, 1 zucchini, blackberries, and a loaf of pepperidge farm's cinnamon & apple swirl bread (2 for $1 special, I bought 1 and that was 50 cents)-- Before you judge me about buying bread for so dirt cheap, I double checked to make sure the bread wasn't moldy or foul... I wish I bought another because it's freaking delicious and I could have freezed the other loaf. All that totaled to $4.54. He also offered to drop the price of a dozen eggs, but I declined again because I didn't need eggs at the moment... But still, what a sweetie! All in all, I had a REALLY pleasant experience. On my way to eating healthier Pete's has become a stomping ground for veggies and fruits to keep me satisfied. The deals are better than ever. The berries are some of the best prices around. I won't buy them a supermarket again. I buy banana's like two to three times a week. I got an email about how healthy banana's are and I can't get enough. Supposedly they give you energy. I'm also falling in love with their fresh bread, I buy 3 rolls at a time, I'm eating for one most of the time so I want to keep the bread fresh. Fresh cut flowers, homemade Baklava at the register. Pete's fruits and vegetables is a tiny grocer located in Denver; the first feeling when you either park your car or enter their parking lot is that is so small from the outside, and will they have everything I need? Despite their exterior size, this small grocer is gi-normous inside, ramped with local produce, lightly blemished produce, seasonal fruits, even ethnic produce. Along with all produce, there are tubs filled with fresh cubes of feta cheese, Greek yogurt (the same or even better quality then WF), all kinds of imported goods! My initial feeling I had when I entered this grocer was that I was shopping at a local grocer in Schibroek, Netherland. On the other hand, when I went to pay, it really felt that I was dreaming! I'd spent seven dollars and some change, and filled my Yelp tote... Why shop anywhere else when I can shop at Pete's? Supporting local business has never been so easy! read more
