I ordered the pancake combo: 3 pancakes, nice and fluffy; sausage looked homemade; eggs over easy. Everything was well prepared. There was plenty to eat for the price. My friend had the fried chicken and waffle. A large amount of chicken on top of the waffle. She enjoyed her meal. We agreed we will be coming back. Henny Penny is one of those longtime Petaluma spots that feels like a hometown classic, so we stopped in around 10 a.m. on a Saturday for breakfast. We were seated right away despite most of the tables being occupied, and drinks came quickly. It became apparent that there appeared to be only one server handling most, if not all, of the dining room, but honestly, they kept things moving impressively well. Our food came out quickly, everything tasted good, and the portions were generous. As the morning went on, though, the restaurant got significantly busier. The area around the register/podium became pretty congested with people waiting, which also made checking out somewhat awkward. A more organized waitlist or designated waiting area would definitely help during the weekend rush. The biggest surprise came at the end of our meal. We had finished eating and were wrapping up our conversation when we were asked to leave the table because they needed it for other customers. I understand the restaurant was busy and they needed to turn tables, but it was still pretty jarring to be directly asked to leave, particularly since there hadn't been any mention of a table-time limit beforehand. That ending unfortunately overshadowed what had otherwise been a really good breakfast. The food was good, portions were generous, and service was fast despite what appeared to be limited staffing. I'd definitely give Henny Penny another visit, but I'd choose a slower weekday or off-peak time. If you're visiting on a busy weekend morning for a longer breakfast or to catch up with someone, just know that once you've finished eating, you may be encouraged to wrap things up pretty quickly. read more

3.5 Stars A Petaluma Institution. The food was OK, the service was friendly and casual, and the atmosphere was cozy and charming with that old school diner vibe. Large portions. Great value!! I suspect that the breakfast menu is where all the real winners are. At dinner time, I saw multiple plates come out with what appeared to be pancakes. Fried Chicken - crispy outside, tender juicy inside, but under seasoned. Mashed potatoes were good. Turkey Dinner - Good quality turkey cooked well, (not dried out), but under seasoned. Spaghetti - Pasta was cooked well, but sauce was one dimentional. Very sweet tomatoey. It's how I imagine spaghetti was served in the 1960s. Bacon Cheese Burger - hands down the best food to hit our table. Burger cooked a perfect MR served on a soft chibatta style roll. Gooey American cheese and bacon is a classic. Biggest gripe was the gravy. It had an unusual spiced profile that was difficult to pinpoint. Possibly cinnamon or All Spice? Whatever it was, it overwhelmed the food you ate with it. It was so strong, I would guess you either love this gravy, or you hate it. Despite my critique, I will return for the atmosphere and the value (and probably breakfast next time). We ordered 4 entrees, drinks, and 2 glasses of wine, and it came to $140 pre-tip. None of us could finish our plates so we had leftovers the next day. read more

Unexpectedly positive experience at this Petaluma iconic restaurant. We've never been here and tried it on a Saturday afternoon around 2:30 ish for a late lunch /brunch. My dining partner had the carne asada skillet and I had the shrimp and avocado salad . I also ordered fries with feta and herbs. Food was way better than average and service was lovely and attentive. Food was fine. Service was terrible. I went to get breakfast with a friend and get some work done while we eat. We weren't planning in staying long. Eat, and work for maybe 30 minutes while we finish coffee. The server multiple times made comments like "this place is to eat, not work", "better finish your coffee", and eventually said to wrap it up as they needed our table for another group. I noticed it was busy and we said we would leave soon. I was a server for years and if someone was still enjoying their coffee they are still a paying customer and have every right to stay longer. They should replace the wait staff and it will probably be a great place to go! read more

Pete's Henny Penny has been a staple in Petaluma for longer than I can remember. Well known for their breakfast as well as other foods. In other words, good old down home comfort food. My brother and I use to frequent this restaurant quite a bit with our dad when we were kids (and that was back when dinosaurs roamed the earth!!). It was the "in" place to go and very affordable back in the day!! It had been many many years since I ate at Pete's Henny Penny but a friend wanted to go get breakfast so we did. Onthat particular occasion I ordered the SOS with bacon, hash browns and scrambled eggs (it's a huge meal, you have a choice of bacon or sausage, hash browns or home potatoes, and then you get eggs any style). Everything was good accept the bacon. It didn't even taste like bacon, I can't really describe the flavor but it was inedible so I left it. About a month later that same friend wanted to go there for lunch so we did and this time around I ordered the Chef Salad. I love that they put it in such a huge bowl as it makes it so much easier to mix!! The salad and dressing were very tasting, it was a lot of food and I took half the salad home as it was so much food! Their menu is huge and there is a lot of variety. What I also like, is that there is a Keto section so those who are on the Keto way of eating (hate sayin the word diet because as Garfield the cat says, diet is just DIE with a T at the end), or like me have to watch my carb & sugar intake due to type 2 diabetes. It's about 6 or so different Keto plates, but you also have salads and most are Keto and if they aren't then you can omit something the croutons, etc. So there really is something for everyone. And if you are hankering for their food but don't want to go out or can't (you have a cold, the flu, sick family member,etc.), you can now order their food via Petaluma Food Taxi. read more

Unfortunately, the service was sub par. It was crowded when we walked in and the server had a large number of tables, but it took him over 20 minutes to grab our drink order. I had the Loco Moco, which is on their "secret menu". It was good, although the patty was cooked more than my liking. The eggs were cooked perfectly. The rice and the gravy were good. My colleagues had the fried chicken and they both said it was very good. Another colleague had the chicken fried steak - being from Texas, it looked sub par and was was served with brown gravy instead of cream gravy. He said the batter was good. Very friendly place. Love the kitschy farm vibe. I was told to sit where I wanted and was immediately met by the waitress with menu. They have a rather large menu so there is something for everyone. I ordered the ACE BLT, which is a regular BLT with avocado, cheese and eggs. I got it on gluten-free bread & it was very good. As always I had the chicken Fried steak and eggs. Always a winner. My wife however had Carne asada skillet and she said it was hardly seasoned which was crazy given its presentation. They should call this restaurant 1 skillet- kill' it! Or 1 skillet 4 Two! Because the food that comes on those skillet is abundant! Really, just buy 1 and share with some sides. Ample parking, greeted when we came in and told choose our seats. The waiter was very sweet, and professional. Ordered veggie scrambled skillet and fried zucchini, my bf ordered the country skillet with biscuits and gravy, and a side of jalapeño poppers. Let me tell you!! So massive in size, the chunks of potatoes , the amount of veggies, the avocado, the salsa, all cooked to perfection !! Sooo good. I just wished I could have finished it all, but there was no way. I tried a piece of the biscuits and gravy- delicious, the fried zucchini was breaded just right. Everything was piping hot, fresh, just made. Horrible Service, Horrible Food. There is only one thing that could have happened. A change in ownership. What ca you do to a diner. Change the menu to something real boring. I have only had mash potatoes and gravy from a box once and this was it. I think it was compressed turkey. Years ago I would stop here for a meal at 2 am and it was wonderful. We were apprehensive. We figured, it could go either way. Could this place be a hidden gem? We can't tell by looking at it.... but driving by, we were always intrigued. I am from Pennsylvania, and I miss diners. California has great food, but when it comes to good old American cooking, it's far and few between. Not that there is anything necessarily wrong with that -- I'm Asian, and so I love all the various ethnic food it offers. But I can't help but miss the good old diners with huge menus, huge portions with the right amount of grease. We took a gamble and stopped by on our way home from visiting family. My husband got one of the burgers, and I got an open faced roast beef sandwich. We were surprised by what was put in front of us. It was HUGE. My hub's burger was giant with a mountain of fries - both were quite tasty and exactly how you want a burger to be. My open faced roast beef sandwich was also huge with tons of gravy and buttery mashed potatoes. The beef wasn't the most flavorful, but the gravy made up for it. We were pretty impressed. Especially given the price which was decent. FINALLY, a place with some decent pricing. With all the places around who charge you 18 bucks for a burger and extra if you want fries... Finally, a place that doesn't gouge you. The second time around, I got the tuna melt and my husband once again got the burger. Tuna melt was just right. Tuna was warmed through with cheese oozing out, with some decent rye bread toasted. I had gotten the regular fries and my husband got the waffle fries, and surprisingly I liked the regular fries more -- it tastes like actual potato, thick and perfectly fried. My husband spontaneously got a vanilla milkshake and it was as you'd expect from a place like this - yummy and giant. I've read some of the reviews that said strange things about this place, and honestly the vibe is a bit strange, so I wouldn't be surprised if those things actually happened. But, for now, we haven't experienced anything strange, and the food is good and well priced. So we will continue to stop by to grab dinner, or maybe we'll try breakfast sometimes, but we have another favorite place in town, so we may never get to try it. Either way, it's pretty awesome to have found a good diner type place -- far and few between out here in the ole CA. read more
