So.. I made reservations early in the day. Upon arrival it was clear from the waitresses condescending tone that she did not wish to be working there. We waited 15 minutes after she sat us for her to return. The place is small and it looked like she was alone. No waters... nothing. So when she did return to table I said:" Gosh, are you by yourself?" ( I spent a lot of years waitressing.. so I get it." ) But, instead of acknowledging that she was busy.. , she said:" if you like, we can talk about that , or you can order." Simply put, the waitress/ hostess was an abusive/ condescending lady. We were so shocked at how she was speaking to us that it took us a few minutes to figure out we needed to leave. We have lived in SB our whole life and we know 80 percent of the people here. We, nor they will ever return. She acted like a 13 year old girl angry that her parents ( us ) put a curfew on her. COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE! I hope the owner sees this as she is a hindrance to his/ her business. I work with cranky, dying people all day and none of them have ever been as abusive and inappropriate as this little lady. I will not miss this place! read more

Wow, stopped in here during our tour of SB restaurants and we're very glad we did. We dined on Quail for an appetizer, perfectly prepared with a wonderful brandy sauce and sauteed grapes, just fantastic. Next we got sauteed mushrooms and the escargot crepe. Again, the food was expertly prepared with exquisite complimentary sauces. We finished with the duck breast with plum sauce, medium rare. It arrived cooked to perfection with a crisp skin and tender flavorful, medium rare meat. The staff was fantastic and took good care of us. We will definitely be back! read more

My wife and I chose this restaurant to enjoy a romantic causal meal. what we got was the worst dining experience we have ever had. slow nite - we were one of 3 tables being served. waiter was inattentive and unfriendly from the start. we ordered - ate an appetizer and then waited an hour without waiter making contact and meal not arriving. other diners were served even though they arrived after us. when confronted both the chef/ owner and waiter blamed a computer system problem for the problem and assured us that the food would be prepared shortly. who needs a computer system to handle three dining tables?? Anyway , never got the chance to try food. thanked them for nothing and moved on. somehow le petit valentien has decided to take Parisian dining experience to a new level: completely ignoring customers and then claiming that some computer program made them do it. These folks need to get into a new line of work. no stars for these folks. Am giving them one because review will not post without it. read more

Woah! This place is AWESOME! Have no idea what the other reviewers were thinking that have given this place less than 5 stars - haters gunna hate, I guess - but our experience seriously could not have been better. The food was phenomenal: phe-nom-enal! We got collard greens, curried potatoes, string beans and carrots, and oh-my-god chickpea mash. The chickpea mash is extraordinary, on a whole new level. Brilliant stuff. We were given as much njiri (sp?) bread as we needed (I got three orders), Levi was our waiter and was amazingly personable. I wanted to smoke a joint with him on the beach after lunch! The owner came to our table to chat about the food and the restaurant. Wow! What a special person! Deeply committed to sharing the brilliance and health that is Ethiopian cuisine. Being Ethiopian herself, she shared stories of her childhood and family recipes. My gosh, this place was wonderful. Quiet, very high-quality food, and a wait staff that was extremely personable without being "in your face". Levi left us alone to enjoy our experience and was attentive at our every need. This is the review where I discovered that yelp entries can't be longer than 3000 characters, and I was only halfway through by then. I can sum up with an old joke. A woman walks up to a market stall with a fish in her hand. She approaches the owner and shouts, "Yesterday, you sold me a fish, and not only was it smelly but it was small too!" The vendor replies, "Well aren't you glad then that it was just a small one?" Anyway, I went here last night with my boyfriend for the $23.50 prixe fixe dinner. We had a 7:30 reservation but had to wait half an hour for a table. The servers took so long getting our meals to us we damn near starved to death. First course was a salad of spinach leaves, tomato, and red onion tossed in olive oil. Second course was some sort of beef dish which looked and smelled like cat food. It was even presented on a flat white plate, a pile of small chunks of meat in sauce in the middle, just like in the Fancy Feast commercials. For the entree, we could choose between shrimp risotto, roast duck, and filet mignon. I had the risotto, which was extremely runny and the rice so mushy it might as well have been porridge. There was a lot of shrimp in it, but they were on the very small side. I tried my boyfriend's duck, and it was all right, but not the best I've eaten. Having consumed most of it, he flipped it over and found a long hair, which was very evidently neither his nor mine. We alerted the waiter, who apologized and said he wouldn't charge us for my glass of Zinfandel (it was the only drink we ordered). There were two option for dessert. I had the chocolate marquise, which just tasted like bittersweet cake icing. My boyfriend had the teensiest creme brulee I've ever seen. You could literally use one tablespoon to scoop up the entire thing. I had a taste and found it to be entirely unexceptional. In all, it took us fully two hours to get in and out of there, waiting half an hour between each "course." It was just enough food for little old me, but my boyfriend was famished and grumpy when we left. We went to Denny's where he ordered a burger and a shake. I can't believe this place won over Bouchon for best French food in Santa Barbara. Tragic service, mediocre food in small portions, and hair in the duck. And to top it off, they don't take American Express. No thank you. Two stars because it was cheap and didn't give me food poisoning. read more

We went there on a Sunday and had their prix fixe menu. The Pros: Quaint ambiance, especially in the outside alley way where we sat. Our waiter was friendly. The Cons: While it seemed like a deal at $24, it really wasn't. The portions were tiny and the best thing about our dinner was the warm, crusty bread. The service was sloooow. We finished dinner 3 hours after we were sat down and we eat fast. Due to the slow service, our appetizers and main courses were lukewarm (but we weren't about to send it back and wait another hour). I had filet as the main course and it was overcooked, dry and cold. They had run out of the potatoes by the time they were assembling my dish, so they substituted rice. So, below the filet was a pile of overcooked rice on top of arugula. The wilted argula and rice was pretty gross. I'm Asian and all but I don't want rice with everything... My bf had a "char siu" pork with rice and he thought it was mediocre. The restaurant looked like a French bistro so we expected fairly traditional French fare so I'm not sure why they attempted this weird type of fusion. It wasn't good French nor good Asian food. I came in on Sunday for the four course pre fixe menu. I'd been in once before for dinner and know of friends who rave about their Sunday dinner, so we'd been dying to come. So glad we did, because they did not disappoint. We started with some deliciously warm and crusty bread, followed by a crab, mango and endive salad (mouthwatering), then ratatouille with poached egg. For the entree, we had the choice of poisson du jour, lamb served with roasted beets and fennel, or half of a roasted cornish game hen served with spinach and mashed potatoes. I got the game hen, and my boyfriend got the lamb, and as full as we were we had no problem finishing both of our plates. Yum, yum, yum. Finished the meal with the lemon cheesecake and dark chocolate mousse. Both were yummy and fairly light. All of that for $24.50. Great deal. I was in search of a perfectly cooked piece of beef which is tender, flavorful and cooked rare. I was too exhausted to go to the grocery store, then prep and cook it. With all the steak-restaurants in SB, I felt overwhelmed by the choices and really did not want to pay 20$ plus for a steak my snobby ass thought could cook better. The biggest letdown is an improperly cooked steak or bad cut of meat. It's hearkens back to the juvenile sense of irrational anger of throwing it out the window... PV is the place to enjoy a quiet glass of wine, a steak and read a book. It's relaxing- how a dinner should be. It's even worthy of taking your mother who's visiting you out and having meaningful conversation (hopefully not about your post-grad future). I appreciate its sense of isolation - set apart from the dt bustle of SB yet centrally located right in La Arcada. Always an interesting selection and I've been for both lunch and dinner - quail (small bird so it's a bit of work to get at the meat- I forgot that duh), mushrooms on crostini, duck (great rendering of the fat, crispy skin!!), juicy frog legs provencal (meal in itself!), lox, seafood crepe - all tasty. The only criticism would be portion consistency and I've once had a glass of red wine that seemed it had turned. But what motivated me to write this review is the perfectly piece of hanger steak - perfect portion, well-executed meaning nice crust & RARE- just how I like it. That plus a glass of red wine was well under 30$! The service is very attentive without being overbearing or pushy; honest and knowledgeable about their food and wines. We received a Groupon dinner as a gift from our son and his girlfriend. We were approaching the expiration date so we went on a Tuesday night around 6:00. I expected to be the only people in the restaurant, but about half the tables were occupied and the host said the remaining tables were reserved. He offered seats at the bar, so we happily sat at the bar. We ordered the hot bread/olives, and artichoke soup. A perfect combination of flavors and warmth. The clear broth was so flavorful, my husband and I dodged each other's spoons to get the spoonful.For our entrees, I ordered the flank steak with mushrooms served on mashed sweet potato, and my husband ordered the scallop special. We switched meals half way through because both entrees were gorgeous and delicious. The Groupon included one glass each of white or red wine. We ordered another glass of wine each and creme brulee for dessert (not included in the Groupon). It was a surprisingly delightful evening. This is one of my favorite Santa Barbara restaurants. Originally it was not on my radar because it didn't look as vegetarian-friendly as other spots I frequent in SB, but a few years ago we planned a large group dinner here for work and the whole thing was stellar. So we have done a few more work dinners here since then, and I've also stopped in to eat dinner at the bar and had lunch here a few times with friends. What do I like? For large group dinners, they have been extremely accommodating and worked well with the staff at my workplace to create a menu that is appropriate for dietary restrictions and also well-paced for a large group. The staff is terrific, the food is great, the wines are unusual for SB and excellent, and the atmosphere gives our out-of-town colleagues a nice intimate experience of Santa Barbara. They feel like they are seeing a special little corner of downtown SB that most tourists don't see. But I also come back here on my own, and that's not so common for me - usually I have "work restaurants" and then totally different restaurants for socializing. I come back here on my own time (and my own money) because the food is so thoughtfully prepared and delicious, the staff is terrific and helps me to select French wines that I have never tasted - a fun break from my usual California wine patterns, and the atmosphere really is intimate and unusual for SB. It feels like a grown-up restaurant without feeling stodgy. And for the occasional midweek day off from work... long lunch with a couple glasses of wine and good conversation in a quiet corner, breezes through the windows that open onto La Arcada... This is my SB pick for the long conversation over lunch with wine, no contest. read more

* This is a review for the Ethiopian lunch served on the weekends * I was excited when Petit Valentien announced that they would be serving Ethiopian cuisine on the weekend. I used to live near a bunch of Ethiopian restaurants, so I'm familiar with the cuisine. Granted, I've never been to Ethiopia; so I don't have firsthand experience. I made a reservation, but didn't need to since the place was pretty much empty except for one table. Even with the empty restaurant, the service was very spotty. Once my entire party showed up, the waitress came by to take our order. We asked for just one minute to look at the menu. And we emphasized the "one". She didn't come back for at least ten minutes! The menu is relatively small - four vegetable options, three meat options. You can order a la carte or a combination of either three veg items or two veg and one meat option. I ordered the two veg one meat combo: - Ayib Begomen - homemade cottage cheese mixed with collard greens - Bawya Alicha - okra in cardamon sauce - Ye'beg Alicha - leg of lamb in turmeric sauce Before our meals came out, the waitress served us a small salad. Though it was well received because we were all starving at that point, the salad was overly dressed. I'm used to ordering a veggie combo at Ethiopian restaurants and it includes a salad that is served alongside everything else. With that in mind, the salad could have used a little injera to offset the dressing. Following the salad, we received a plate with two rolls of injera partially rolled out. Then, they delivered the veg/meat. Each item was in its own square plate and they were stacked like a pyramid on to a holding plate. I was a bit confused because I'm used to being served a large plate lined with injera and the veg/meat on top. To me, that's one of the best parts about Ethiopian food, how the flavors/juices seep into the injera. So, I proceeded to pour some of my items onto the injera. The ayib begomen reminded me of those spreadable cheeses with spinach mixed in. The taste was okay, but I was expecting more collard greens. The bawya alicha was good. The ye'beg alicha was disappointing. They were small cubes of meat and it wasn't very warm. I had a little bit of food left but no injera. The waitress came by and asked if I would like some more injera. I asked for just a little. She never brought any. When we were done with our meal, it took forever to get the check because our waitress was no where to be found. By this point, there were two additional tables taken. Overall, I was really disappointed with this experience. With the limited menu selection, I was expecting each item to be amazing. That, coupled with the spotty service, made for a less than desirable meal. So, if you're jonesing for some Ethiopian food, take the time to go to LA. If I return, it will only be to try their French fare. read more

This may be one of the easiest 5 star reviews I've ever had to give. Without a doubt it was one of the most phenomenal meals I've had in a very long time. We started off with the Mushrooom/bread appetizer with a balsamic vinegar "dressing" and a salmon, capered cream cheese delight. Paired with a nice glass of Chardonnay, it nicely enhanced the flavors of the perfectly sautéed mushrooms. We shared the flank steak and lamb chops as the main course. All I can say is.... "WOW!" How did they do it? The meat slid off the bone as quickly as I slid out of my chair with happiness. I highly suggest getting the meat medium rare for the full, slide out of the chair effect. This has been one of my favorite restaurants in Santa Barbara since it opened. Food is excellent, fairly priced as is the wine list. However, the service is uneven. Normally that would not bother me, because--hey this is santa Barbara where many of the wait staff have masters degrees and lousy service is the only way they can communicate they are smarter than the customer. But I digress. Earlier this week, my wife and I went into Petit Valentien for dinner. Our favorite table by an open window had been reserved, but a table for 4 was available. Though the restaurant was empty, the waiter would not seat us there saying it had to be saved for parties of 4. We left and went elsewhere. We walked passed the restaurant an hour later--the table(and the restaurant) were empty. To the waiter who refused to seat us--bad decision. The restaurant lost our business--maybe permanently-- and the other server who had brought us a glass of wine at the bar lost a good tip. MY NEW FAVORITE RESTAURANT! I've never been a huge fan of French cuisine, but this restaurant has changed my whole life! Not too pricy considering the quality and ambiance you are getting. Also, pretty cheap in comparison to the other restaurants in this area. 4 stars because of the HORRIBLE service (read the 3rd paragraph). For an appetizer, my boyfriend and I had the crab cake. It came with one fairly portioned crab cake which was surprisingly good to me! I was not expecting much because a crab cake is a crab cake; nothing special to me. But this crab cake tasted very crabby, like it has a ton of meat or something and the sauce it was served in was citrusy! You also get one free piece of fresh bread and butter which was also very delicious and hot!! I got the duck with cherry sauce and it was literally one of the best dishes I have ever had. The duck was cooked perfectly with a thin and crispy skin that you could hear when you cut and the inside meat was cooked perfectly soft. The cherry sauce added a nice fresh sweetness to it which helped to balance out the heavy was of the duck and mashed potatoes. The portion was also very good. I was full, but not exploding afterwards. The only bad thing I have to say about this place was the service. I noticed there were only like 2 servers working and a busboy, but it was not busy the entire time. Maybe 4 other tables besides us, but it still took 5 minutes to sit us down even after we asked someone. Also, WE had to ask someone to sit us down, no one greeted us or offered anything even though we were standing in the front waiting and they passed by us several times. We also asked for a specific table in the restaurant, but the server said they couldn't give it to us because of a reservation. We dined here for an hour and a half and no one with a reservation came in or sat in that table the entire time... Wish this restaurant was more honest! I've worked in my fair share of restaurants and they could have used any other excuse besides that. Maybe they were saving the table incase they got busy, but the place was empty, they really could have given it to us. I think they were just too lazy to clean it maybe. The second server/busboy was also really rude and just threw our appetizer plate on the table, making a loud noise! He even rudely tossed aside out small bread plates (which still had bread and butter in them!) to make room on the huge table for our small appetizer??? Don't see why this was necessary or why he couldn't have been more careful. Some of the bread and butter even fell out of the plates and onto the table and he just left it that way!!! Really so rude. However, I loved the food so much I'm giving it 4 stars and will return, but I hope my experience with the service was a single one and that the workers will improve their service. Wow, what a great discovery this was. Although my wife had known about Petit Valentien, we had never come here. This past week though, we happened to be having lunch with some friends at Andersens Danish Bakery trying to decide on where to have dinner when my wife suggested Petit Valentien. Since it was right around the corner from Andersens, we walked by to check out the menu, and it looked very interesting. Luckily we were able to get reservations for 7:40 that evening. When we arrived, the place was fully packed. Although it was a Tuesday, I'm guessing it was because of the holiday week. Anyway, we were told that we would have to wait for our table. No problem...there were some seats at the bar so we sit down to have a glass of Champagne. I'm guessing they were not fully prepared for the crowd that evening as we ended up having to wait about 35 minutes for our table to be ready. However, the host made up for it by offering us two petit cheese plates and two glasses of Champagne on the house. When we finally did get seated, the four of us decided on the following: Small Plates * field greens, roasted beets and goat cheese * petit cheese plate * crostini of seasonal mushrooms * crisp crepe of escargot, red wine sauce * soft shell crab, garlic and herb butter Entrees * filet of local halibut, water cress pesto * roast cornish game hen, lemongrass and ginger * bacon wrapped pork tenderloin, mission fig sauce * steak au poivre Desert * flourless chocolate cake * creme brulee Of the Small Plates, we all agreed that the crostini of seasonal mushrooms was our favorite. Personally, I love mushrooms, and I think this was my favorite dish of the evening...although teh crepe of escargot was also very good. Of the Entrees, the steak au poivre was excellent. It was cooked to perfection (medium rare) and was one of the most tender steaks I have ever had. The bacon wrapped pork tenderloin was my personal second favorite and was also cooked just right and the fig sauce was a perfect accompaniment. My wife had ordered the halibut based on a recommendation from a couple seated next to us, but unfortunately it was a bit overcooked and dry. Other than the halibut being overcooked, the only real negative that I have to mention is how prepared they were for the number of guests that evening. As I mentioned above, we had to wait 35 minutes for our table, but when we were seated and our waitress came by with bread for the table, she mentioned that it was the last of the bread and it was only 8:15 PM. Had we made reservations any later, there would have been no bread for the table. Then, after we were finished with dinner and were asked about desert, we were told that there were only three pieces of desert left (two pieces of flourless chocolate cake and a creme brulee). We ordered one of each, which were OK...but not anything spectacular. Again, if our reservations were any later, we would have been out of luck. So four stars for food, service and decor. As Lauren B. mentions in her review, it does feel like you are in a restaurant in Europe. I love the location looking out at La Arcada and not looking out at a bunch of parked cars. We will definitely be back and hope that next time the crowd won't be so overwhelming. read more

Usually, I would be very skeptical and would want to eat at a place where I can choose my meal, but it was such a wide selection of items, along with multiple courses (portions weren't huge, but they were DELICIOUS) of salad, appetizers, entrees, and dessert, all for something like $25 for each person. It was on our second visit For the four course Sunday deal That the food was just exquisite. (And at under thirty, a steal) We had come in, out from the rain, Shone briefly in the windowpane. Once in, we saw, projected fuzzy, The good, the bad and the ugly; Above the dining rooms far wall. I ordered monk fish ,my love, pork cheek. Ian uncorked our turning leaf. I went twice there for their Ethiopian lunch and dinner. First of all, the place itself looks so good, and their dinner menu looks promising. Ethiopian lunch: portions are too small. Each of us got two sides and a protein, but the portions were a table spoon size. Moreover, the food itself was too simple: nothing restaurant-like. I was so surprised when for my dinner, I got the same fried fish that I had for the Ethiopian lunch: looks exactly the same and even fried in the same say (oil and salt). So, I won't probably return there and recommend this place because I expect to receive more creative food than I can prepare myself. read more

I love to sit outside near this restaurant because I almost feel like I am in Europe. Food: Crostini of seasonal mushrooms Grilled Quail Scallops Venison Duck in plum sauce That's what we ordered and really liked. The service was usually accommodating.
