First time coming to Ebony and first time trying Ethiopian food! I was so happy with this place; came with a friend on a Friday night and there was no wait and open seating. We sat outside and there was a view of the concert that night so it was a great vibe and we had a great time. We did the family style for two ($39) with four entrees, salad, and the injera. We chose the following: Spicy misir wot - lentil based and lots of different spices Shiro wot - chickpeas based Enguday tibs - sautéed mushrooms; super flavorful and the most different from the other dishes we got (more saute style; less pasty or saucy) Denech alicha wot - potatoes and carrots Injera - came with this spongey crepe like roll that you can eat with all the sauces/dips/entrees You order first and then sit wherever you want. We did wait a little bit because they accidentally lost our order due to a big party before us, but the staff was so nice and apologetic even though we didn't mind at all. He even gave us free Ethiopian tea for us while we waited and offered banana bread, which was so sweet. But the food came out shortly after that and it was well worth the wait! So good! I've only come to SLO twice and visited this restaurant both times. Tucked into a hallway with a back patio, this place has become an absolute favorite of mine. I've gotten the meal for two (~$40) on both occasions. The mushroom tibs are my favorite, followed closely by the potatoes and beets. Plenty of extra injera and the food is served atop an injera as well. The food is flavorful, healthy, vegan-friendly, and overall delicious. I also tried the teff brownie ($5) and it was a good sweet treat for the end of the meal. A little tough for my liking but still good. The service is also really great. While visiting San Luis Obispo, my husband and I wanted to try a new cuisine in our search we decided on Ethiopian food. Ebony's restaurant had great reviews so we decided to give it a try. Ebony's was located across a small bridge along a little creek. There was various seating options available such as bar tops, indoor tables, and patio seating. Our orders were taken at the counter by a very friendly young man. We opted for the family meal for 2. We chose the spicy misir wot which consisted of simmered red lentils with onions and an Ethiopian spice. Enguday tibs which was portobello mushrooms saiteed with onions and peppers. Shiro wot which was a paste like sauce made with chickpeas and lastly Denech alicha wot which consisted of potatoes and carrots cooked with onions and turmeric. Along with the dishes was injera (Ethiopia's version of roti). The meal was brought out in a lovely basket displayed in a very inviting way. My husband and I helped ourselves to each dish enjoying all of them. I think our favorite of the 4 was the spicy misir wot although we both really enjoyed the denech alicha wot too. Finally, an Ethiopian restaurant has arrived in SLO-town. I feel so full after ordering the half-dish with their red lentils and the daily special of cooked kale. Best of all it's all healthy. This cuisine is one of the oldest in the world and it is believed that the Queen of Sheba ruled this area at the time of King Solomon. Its traditions are from an ancient civilization with strong Christian-ties. Short of visiting the country, you can enjoy this delicious food while listening to very cool music. Ebony took over where Bliss Cafe used to be, in the Network Mall on Higuera St. The space is welcoming and soothing, with bright colors and comfy seating all around. We stopped by here for a late lunch on our road trip. It's such a lovely spot. At first it looks like industrial and then you notice their sign and a lovely office like place at the back. The owner was extremely welcoming and gave us a little intro on Ethiopian food for our friends who hadn't tried the cuisine before, which was a very nice experience. They ran out of most of the dishes by the time we got there. They have a lot of pre orders, she even suggested we text her next time so she can save them for us. We went ahead with the combo option. The food was so delicious, it was mostly different kind of lentils. Each one had its own unique flavor and was just finger licking good. The portion size is rather small, we had to order at least 4 extra injera. We also got a mushroom side which was my favorite. The service was even better. Note it is a little difficult to find this place but they were able to come guide us when we got close. Food was delicious with good flavors. We got the whole main dish and an extra side of injira. From time to time I'll feel inspired enough to cobble together a combination of words that closely resembles how I feel after leaving a great restaurant. This is one of those moments. This will be fun. I read an article in some magazine about this place. Right away, I felt like I knew the owner without actually meeting her. She has a deep passion for community and understands how food is used as a medium for connecting people. I knew the food was going to be good, because it was gonna be made with love. I was not disappointed. Normally, when I'm hungry I usually eat non-vegan stuff. I came here hungry. I left full! And not just full, but with the feeling of light contentment. It kind of felt like I just meditated. Huh! I decided to go out of my way and take a few nice photos of the ambience, the menu, and the food itself. No matter what you get, it's going to be pretty damn amazing. You can throw a dart at any of the things you can choose from on the menu, and you will not be disappointed. Not. At. All. OMG! THE best Ethiopian food we've ever had. The spicy red lentil wot was our fave! The puréed chickpea shiro wot, sautéed mushrooms tibs, and green beans + carrots were all perfectly cooked and also super tasty. Our 10-year old LOVED it! Faban's counter service was friendly and helpful in ordering. We liked the option of either indoor or outdoor. It was a beautiful day and we chose to open the umbrella and eat creekside.
