Petite Crevette has to be one of the cutest, coziest, romanticest restaurants I've eaten at and I'm so glad I decided to dine here after a fierce search on yelp for a Tuesday night dinner venue amidst Brooklyn. The waitress who was serving us that night had to be the politest, friendliest, sweetest waitress I've ever come across among all the restaurants I've been to. I don't think I've heard any one say "Thank You" as many times as she did within the two hours we were there. I ordered the cod entree with capers with mashed potatoes and side of vegetables. C ordered the pan seared talipia that also came with mashed potatoes and a side of vegetables. For an app, we shared a corn crab chowder. All were absolutely delicious. And on top of an already delightful meal, we stopped by the bodega across the street and had ourselves a six pack of beer to top off the perfect night. Cute seafood restaurant, off the beaten track. Tiny place, BYOB, feels very homey. Good place for a date (with some caveats). Pluses: Really great food, cooked right in front of you in a tiny open kitchen. I liked that there was a limited menu, based on what seafood was available. The cook was very nice (I think he might be the owner?) and obviously cared about serving his customers well. The place has a neighborhood feel, very cute. Minuses: I was here for Valentine's day, and the service was slow (2 hours for entree. No joke). But we didn't have reservations, and it was Valentine's day-- plus, the cook was very apologetic. So I wanted to give this place a second chance. The second time around, on an ordinary weekday night, the service was much better. Still, this is not a place to go to if you're in a hurry, or if you're with someone who's picky about fast and attentive service. It's a very small space, so it can also get crowded. If I came back here, I would come early on a weekday night to avoid the crowds, I would leave a lot of time, and I would bring a bottle of wine (it's BYOB). The tuna burger was fantastic. We celebrated my dad's birthday here and it turned out exactly how I expected it would from all the awesome Yelp reviews that I had read. Service was impeccable, the food was amazing, and the price was spot on. Oh, and BYOB is always a plus. Especially loved that the chef/owner came out and talked/sat with us at the end of our meal. I went here for valentines day this year...as expected it was crowded, but they made every effort to seat us, and quickly. Even without reservations. My newish Boyfriend, picked the place, because he likes good food and simple seafood. He's Croatian and despite the fact there are a ton French flags all over Petite Crevette- the chef is Croatian too. A perfectly wonderful New-Orleans-esq oaisis (right next to the highway). I hit the big 2-5 marker on a Wednesday night, and my always perceptive boyfriend remembered the 300,000 times I mentioned how much I wanted to try this place. They don't take reservations, so lucky for us it was a crappy night out and the restaurant was practically empty- except for the owner and a few regulars. We grabbed a seat in the back (and this is when the rain went from being annoying and gross, to a romantic addition to the evening) and got cozy. We ordered the Corn Crab Chowder- which ended up being my favorite part of the meal. The crab was fresh and abundant (ha ha BP! That one got away) and the broth was sweet and soulful. I wanted to order a few more bowls, but thought it more appropriate to order an entree; after all, I'm a big kid now. I ordered the mustard crusted salmon, which was delicious. It came with mashed potatoes and greens, all of which were fantastic. The boyfriend raved about the tuna burger- his only complaint was that the sauce it came with for the fries should've been a bigger serving- and I agree, that stuff was like crack-sauce. I considered asking for a bed after the meal, because I was just so warm and cozy (inside and out) I didn't want to leave. I adore this place. I LOVE that it's just a few blocks away from me. It feels like a secret- such a hidden gem, such oddball decor, so small & intimate! The food is great, although I feel like it keeps getting more & more expensive? So that's a little annoying, but it's so reliably good that I have to go back about once a month. If you live in the neighborhood, it's the perfect place to take friends/company as a "unique to my area" kinda meal. Not to mention, it's BYOB, which I always love. The thai cod curry (although every time I've been there lately, it's been tilapia- I guess cod's been out of season- which is still great, but a little more $$) is AMAZING. People who say they want noodles or rice with it are out of their minds- and someone mentioned NOT liking the hidden scoop of mashed potato on the bottom of the bowl. THAT PERSON IS INSANE. Get this dish, it's delicious. I agonize over what to get every time, because I've tried pretty much everything, and it's all so good. The scallops dijonaise, the mustard-crusted salmon, the tuna burger, the salmon burger, the cioppino, the whole fish, the specials... ay yi yi, yum. I also love the appies: fried oysters, tuna & salmon carpaccio, mozzarella & tomato salad, crab & corn chowder- all winners. There's usually only one server working, so service can be a little slow when the restaurant is busy, but just chill out, man. Drink your wine & don't be a pushy jerk. Also, some reviewers complain about having to sit up front- yeah, I suppose the back room is preferable & more "romantic," but i've sat up front at least a couple of times, & still had a great time. Totally different ambiance, but still cool & charming. In fact one of those times was with my boyfriend, and the back room was packed, and we were all alone in the front. Completely romantic & felt like our own private little French vacation! One of the only bad things I can say is that about half of the times I've been there, there's been a wait (no big deal, it's tiny, so it's understandable) & we've gone next door to the new wine bar, the Flying Lobster. according to my astrological consultant...i am a generous person. (surprise, surprise) so since it was Jennifer R's birthday i agreed (was forced?) to take her out for her burrday dinnah. thankfully for yelp eats- she was giving my wallet a break and decided on pettite crevette. when we walked by we wondered why it was so empty...that is until we were lead to the other dining room where it was pretty packed. like jen mentioned in her review the space was pretty cozy, comfortable (minus getting squirted on... i mean, who doesnt like getting warm stuff squirted on them. oh you dont? yeah...me...too... so to the table we were next to thanks for that warm fishy surprise) and had a lot of character (jen couldnt stop staring at the statue that watched over us, i think she was trying to figure out a way to take it home...) since it was BYOB, we brought a bottle of wine and was opened immediately after we were seated. thanks dude. we had: apps: fluffy fried oysters, tuna carpaccio entrees: boston cod with thai curry, cioppino dessert: creme caramel, flourless chocolate cake i like my oysters like lady gaga likes her sushi...raw raw raw raw raw...so although most fried things are good i wasnt that much of a fan of the fried oyster app. tuna carpaccio was pretty tasty with some fresh squeezed lemon. both of the entrees were also good. the thai curry wasnt overwhelming and paired well with the boston cod the mashed potatoes at the bottom of the bowl were a nice touch. while jen was eating her cioppino i dropped some knowledge and explained how cioppino was invented. i dont think she believed me but WHATEVER i know its true...the tv told me so. anyhoo, it had a nice light tomato broth and whatever she let me try tasted pretty good. dessert...i enjoyed the creme caramel mostly because it was cold. both desserts were okay but nothing to write home about. it should also be noted that the food does take a while to come out since there is only one person cooking (i think thats what we heard). with that being said, please leave your crankypants at home,bring an extra bottle of wine and enjoy the bread. read more

I went here with a group of five other people for my birthday dinner this past Friday. Do call ahead if you have a large group. The restaurant was very accomodating, but I think the heads up helped. It is quite tiny. The service was great, and the place is super, super cute. I love that it's BYOB and casual and fun. The food was rather hit or miss. The people in the party who had fish - salmon, porgy, etc. - got delicious meals. The seafooders got meh meals. Not bad. Not great. Fairly priced. But I'm really starting to think you can't get good seafood in New York. You should go. Definitely go. Get a whole fish (watch out for the bones). Bring a bottle of wine (or seven), and some good friends, and have an awesome time. But maybe don't get the seafood. read more

Yummy!!! Had a short wait on a Saturday night, but it was worth it. The waitress was a bit flighty, but very sweet nonetheless. Eventhough I had just received my appetizer, the waitress gave my husband's appetizer to another table. We had to wait another 15 minutes for his to come along. We both had the fish stew, I had the tuna carpaccio, and my husband had the fried clams or was it oysters? Good stuff. The lobster could have used a few more minutes on the heat, but after what I've read, I am not going to tell that to chef Neil Ganic. Definitely became a fan of this place just after one visit. I came here with three other friends and we all had a great time and obviously a great meal. La Petite Crevette is a small French seafood restaurant nestled away in a discreet street corner in Cobble Hill that clearly does not need any gaudy signs or storefront for business. Inside is decorated with hand written menus on the wall, ivy plants, mirrors, and small art pieces. All in all, along with dim and cozy lighting, the atmosphere felt very unforced and welcoming. Wendy was the waitress for the night and she was clearly a veteran of the establishment and very friendly. She reminded us that the establishment was BYOB without any corkage fee- a big plus. (FYI there is a wine store literally 1/2 a block away from the restaurant, so there is no need to panic if you come unprepared). We shared the seafood soup for the appetizer, and I had the special of the day, which was the baked red snapper. Others had the baked salmon and the seafood cioppino. The seafood soup was tomato cream based with many chunks of shrimp, fish, and clams and was overall very good. My red snapper was seasoned very well, and the fish was baked preserving the moisture in the meat. The best dish was probably the cioppino which had lobster, shrimp, mussels, and clams in a clear garlicky stew that was absolutely delicious. The main dishes were a bit pricey at 25-27 dollars, but considering the taste, the ambiance, and the overall dining experience, it was well worth the price. First sign of warning, when the menu that is shown outside of the restaurant has white out all over the prices with new higher prices written over. Complete Sham, overhyped restaurant... Arrived @ 8:20PM on a Saturday night was advised by the owner the wait would be 20 minutes. We were advised to wait at the bar next door "The Flying Lobster", that was having a soft launch. The bar shared the same owners. We had a party of 4 and decided to stay here compared to a wait list for Lucalis which advised that we would be seated by 10PM. The owner came by the bar and said they are setting our table, complete lie and each time said we were really close to being seated. After much wait we were finally seated @ 10PM. Immediately after I got a call from Lucalis saying our table was ready. I would of definitely chose Lucalis over here if only the owner was honest about the wait. The service completely sucked, we specifically told the waiter that we were starving and that we asked for bread immediately, we ended up having to ask the service boy because our waiter completely forgot. Then again the waiter didnt even open our bottle of wine or provide glasses as he was too busy in his own world. Now to the food, they have a 1-2 person cooking staff to service a whole restaurant, we waited for the food for more than expected because they dont have the support... Next, the prices are completely undeserved. We should not have to pay manhattan prices for seafood. I ordered The Thai Curry cod but was told that I would not get cod because the fish that they had today was of higher quality and that I would have to pay more. Instead I would get tilapia... If you are not going to serve whats on the menu then take it off.. enough said. My companion had the cod with capers, and again was told the story of how she had to pay an additional amount (3 dollars) because of the so called story that the cod was of a better quality tonight versus other nights. So $19+3 for the cod that was small and came with some out of the box mash patties and some carrots and string beans. Thumbs down! I completely engulfed the meal because we were waiting forever, but its nothing special and especially not worthy of the menu prices in this hole in the wall far brooklyn place. It probably was at one time a nice small place, but got completely changed to milk new yorkers fo their money for undeserved food. Portions sucked for 25 dollar price tag. The best item that is not on the menu that I would definitely recommend is the olive oil with tomatoes / garlic that came free with the bread. Lastly, they have BYOB but charge a corkage fee? Excuse me? Since you have no alcohol why do you feel like you can charge people for a corkage fee ? This is only charged when you have alcohol on premise!! In addition, this is a cash only place, but conviently have an ATM at the bar next door for 1.99. Talk about a money grubber owner.. apparently the owner does not understand that a restaurant will go down in flames as fast as it grows popular. I used to live around the corner from this restaurant and I've eaten here a half dozen times or so. I really love this place. It's just so charming and the food is always delicious. The owners and staff are friendly without being imposing, which is a delicate balance in such a small space. I love that it's BYOB too. It's nice to bring a bottle of something special, like Champagne or Brooklyn Local 1, and be able to drink it with a spectacular meal without having to buy it off the menu at a ridiculous mark up. They charge a small corkage fee but they'll also keep your bottle on ice and pour for you, etc. I've had lots of different things here, the fried oysters are always a must. The soft shell crab is great when it's available. The tomatoes, when in season, are some of the best I've ever had. And, for the neighborhood and the style of cuisine, the prices are very fair. (Carroll Gardens, you've got some other ridiculously overpriced restaurants!) Even though I'm not around the corner any longer, I'll be stopping in again. My love for the food, the hospitality, and the atmosphere, the general experience they offer is greater than that for any other restaurant in the city or Brooklyn. Petite Crevette is timeless, the staff are so professional, there are never any gimmicks or curve balls or problems or anything. It transcends the idea of restaurant, it's an escape from the city, whisking you off to a side street in Europe for just one evening. It's away from the hustle and bustle, it's peaceful, its sexy, its comforting and cozy all at once. It's so classy and casual, fancy and relaxed. It's what every restaurant should be. It's a soft, hazy, dream-like experience that everyone should have. It's also BYOB, and totally gourmet, authentic, like a home cooked meal. So what do I love? Their fried oysters, their tuna tartare, their provencals and their salmon dishes. I love their corn chowder and their clam chowder, and I love their mussels. What I really love, is the cioppino. No cioppino nor seafood stew nor bouillabaisse anywhere can compare to the cioppino here. It's half a lobster, it's scallops, shrimp, mussels and more in a light and simple and amazingly delicious tomato broth. It's my favorite meal and I crave it always. The lobster also stands alone as the best lobster as well. The atmosphere is perfect and the service is, too. The prices are reasonable and overall there isn't a single reason not to come here for any and every occasion: with your parents, on a first date with that girl you've got to impress, on a Tuesday night when you don't want to cook, after a bad day or to celebrate a birthday. The gal and I had a very odd eating experience here just last night... There were a lot of things that could have been improved: 1. Both her tomato-mozzerella salad and my haricot vert salad were pretty unquestionably overdressed. As in, too much dressing. 2. We sat another 20-30 minutes awaiting our main course without having our appetizer plates cleared and without receiving the extra bread we asked for. 3. We were being gawked at by the clientele there. Yes, I'm 6'8", but the customers were on the older side and were intrigued by our youth, I think. Also, it may have been that we actually adhered to the BYOB policy rather than the BYOWine which everyone else was conforming to. That is, we brought a growler and the whole restaurant's reaction was: "OMGZ, WHAT IZ THIS BROWN JUG THINGS?!?!?!?!" Except they were too old to know what "OMG" might have stood for. 4. 144 Union St.? Guys, you're on fucking Hicks. Come to terms with it. That said, the entrees were pretty delicious, but nothing superlative for what we were paying. Boy and I shared the green bean salad, he chowed down on at least 2 bread baskets, and we then went all in and ordered both the soft shell crab special (him) and the full branzino (me). His soft shell crab was really good, although perhaps a little too fried. It moved just a tiny bit past fried crab to fried food in the shape of crab, but you kind of can't go wrong with friend anything so still tasty! I snagged quite a few bites, and thought it was a good dish overall. Same for my branzino--a good dish overall, but I wouldn't mind seeing a few tweaks! Fish was really really nicely cooked, but could have used a little more flavor. It had a bit of tomato relish on top, and I wish it came with a side bowl of that, as it added a lot of much needed flavor. Still a nicely cooked fish that tasted great, but could have been 5 stars with just a few changes! We shared the flourless chocolate cake to end, and both agreed it was good if nothing special. I think perhaps the restaurant was just too darn busy that night, and perhaps a few quality control issues slipped through. Our waiter was also very sweet although overwhelmed with work. He ended up forgetting to put in our dessert order, and then comped it when he realized how long we waited. Not a problem, and he was very gracious! I showed up at 7:15 on a Saturday night, and told the server that my friend was a mere 15 minutes behind me -- and much to my surprise, he sat me. I cracked open the bottle of wine I brought, sipped and soaked in the ambiance as I waited. It's definitely a date night location, but there were a fair amount of families and large parties packed into a very cozy space. Super casual, quirky and quaint all at the same time. We got the fried oysters, the greens and tomato (with mozz) and seafood chowder as apps. Yes, we were hungry. I am not a huge soup person, but the seafood chowder is cooked so perfectly, and so delicious, I thought, "Why can't all soup taste this good?!" For the entree, I got the Cioppino, which was spectacular. My friend ordered the snapper, equally impressive. Scrapped the fruit tart off the plate (that good), and we stayed till they were nearly closed. I felt bad and hustled my friend out of there, but liked that the servers didn't rush us. Stopped here after reading reviews for lunch. Great food! Had the Tuna Burger!!! Freaking awesome! Wife had seafood cioppino with lobster and muscle and shrimp and scallops. All cooked perfectly. Non- over done or Raw. Just PERFECTLY cooked! Fried oysters were great too! This place lets you BYOB so I only wished I knew. Lol~~~ will recommend friends and come again. Walking through the door at Petite Crevette gives you the impression of entering another place entirely--its menus written on brown paper and eclectic mix of decorations feels like your grandmother's funky bungalow in Miami in the best way. I came here for my birthday dinner with my boyfriend prepared to take advantage of it being BYOB with a 6-pack, fearing that the staff would balk at us bringing beer, but instead our waiter cheerfully put it in the fridge and showed us to our seats. The menu is really simple but it's still difficult to order because everything just sounds so good! I settled on the Red Snapper which was a special that day, grilled whole and served with a caper, tomato, and onion mixture with mashed potatoes and vegetables on the side. It was all absolutely delicious and I just wished I wasn't so intense about diving into my fish so I would have ended up eating less bones... The boy got salmon paillard served over french fries, and he said it was some of the best salmon he's ever eaten. Although this place is unpretentious, it is actually pretty expensive, so make sure you bring plenty of cash (there's an ATM around the corner if you forget like we did). I'm not a huge seafood lover, but for what I do enjoy, Petite Crevette more than catered to. We started with a tuna carpaccio that was thicker than I'm used to, but incredibly fresh and had the right accompaniments for well-balanced flavor -- A+. We also had a mushroom salad which I enjoyed but found a little soggy due to a heavy hand on the dressing. My scallop entree was outstanding and the common entree sides for both of our dishes were also very good, if not a little plain. I tried a bit of my husband's cod and really enjoyed the flavor... not being a fish person, this must mean good things for Petite Crevette's preparation. And although I really like their off-the-beaten-path, cozy atmosphere, I found it a little odd that they only post their menus on the wall in a darkly-lit room... so you have to stand and walk over to read it. I pictured bringing my family here for a meal before this came to light -- imagining my half-blind relatives trying to huddle over the wall contemplating the options quickly made me nix that thought. It's like when you're watching an ad while on the train (that's next to the door) and the person thinks you're looking at them but you're not. weird awkward moment to be had by all. - $5 wine corking fee. Neil G. has created a tiny oasis next to the waterfront. I've eaten there since they first opened many times including take out . I am always left with the feeling that my food is being made by someone who cares. Anyone who knows Neil can attest to his generousness, hard work, and spirit. What a lot of folks don't get who visit Petite or Brooklyn neighborhoods like this one is this: without people like Neil creating great food at great prices, we'd all leave or be left eating 1980's chinese every night. This place is intimate and has several different sections in itself. We had the fortune of dining by ourselves in one of the rooms because the other was full. Decor/Ambiance- 4/5 I like the homely feel and the different sea-related items decorating the wall. Service- 5/5 Since we were alone in one of the rooms, we were basically doted on. This I can get used to. Food- 3/5 We had the fried oysters and the Cioppino that everyone raves about. The oysters had a nice texture at first- until we encountered the sand in each one. That sort of killed it for us. The Cioppino was pretty good. If we were lobstermongerers and experts in breaking one up, we would have probably liked it more. First world problems. The sauce went well with the fish. But good is not the same as mindblowing awesome. Maybe next time (with no sandy oysters please)? Bottom line- Maybe your experience will be different. There are unexpected moments in life when a sweet little gem like Petite Crevette are everything you hoped for and more! That's exactly what we experienced on Tuesday, February 11th to celebrate our 1 year anniversary. From the moment we walked thru the door and were greeted so pleasantly by our lovely Austrian Host & Server, "I've been expecting you!" she proclaimed, we knew we had decided on the right place to celebrate. She immediately took the bottle of champagne we had brought to be chilled (byob a huge perk!) and seated us at a precious intimate table in the charming dining room. We shared that it was our anniversary and she shared she had just been married last week! Personable service without taking it too far, extremely knowledgable of the menu, helpful, attentive... and just the right amount. I started our meal with the fried oysters and my husband the seafood chowder. Both were delicious! Generous portions with great flavor and complexity without too much of anything. For my entree, I ordered the Shrimp Provençal and my husband the Mustard Crusted Salmon. Again, simply scrumptious! The portions were plentiful but not overwhelming. Both entrees were the perfect tenderness for seafood. Incredible flavor complemented well by the simple mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetables. To top off the night, our server brought over, compliments of the house... A small slice of their chocolate flour-less cake and mixed berry tart. YUM! Again... Delicious and such a lovely gesture. I suppose there are stranger places to get a good piece of fish than a tiny storefront between the BQE and the Brooklyn docks, but probably not that many... still, if you can find this place, you're in for a great meal. just bring a couple of bottles of white wine, coz if its even remotely crowded, you'll be finishing that first bottle long before the main course arrives! the service wasn't quick - or even particularly knowledgable about the goods on offer - but everything we ate was fresh and delish. fried oysters were fantastic, and i'd definitely have had another order if i hadn't had the last plate in the house... the dorado was grilled perfectly by Neil, a very friendly chef when he's not buried in his tiny open kitchen. bottom line? great food, byob is genius, go somewhere else if you're in a hurry, and enjoy the poisson brooklynaise read more

So...based on my fellow yelpers rec, I tried out this spot on a date. For one thing, why is this place listed as caribbean? There was nothing about the food that was the least bit caribbean. The set up...a little awkward, maybe? Two seating sections to choose from: air conditioned room vs not with a view of all the raw fish available? Decor? Christmas lights, random art work, romanesque statues...menus tapes to the walls on butcher paper? Tiny tables. Okay... I suppose it's a "jewel" if you live in the neighborhood, but otherwise I say its not worth leaving the city or really the otherside of Brooklyn to get to it. Overall decent food, decent service, but not worth the effort if it's not within walking distance. read more

I love this place! It's small, unpretentious, consistent, reasonably priced, and serves really great, healthy seafood provencal style with some comfort (fried oysters, mashed potatoes, and french fries) foods on the side. I love that I can go across the street and pick up a nice bottle of Sancerre or Poilly Fume and bring it in and they happily put in ice for me.... my only wish is that they had some nice seasonal greens for sides instead of the garden veg which are standard on the plates. Like some other reviewers I want to tell you that it's horrible and bad and all things heinous, but It is faaaar from it. The seafood is unbelievably fresh, cooked right and offered at a reasonable price. It's like Cheers (you know, where everyone knows your name) but with good food and BYO alcohol. Yes, yes -- we heard about the whole lobster incident via Eater. And you know what? I'm with the "eccentric" Neil on this one -- that couple must have been out of their minds. Our ciopino was so perfectly rendered -- each element just the right doneness, texture and flavor -- that we will be driving into Brooklyn to get another serving. And another, ad infinitum. The Thai curry cod with root veggies may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I enjoyed it. And again, the cod? Expertly cooked. The wait on a weekend night for this tiny place (hint: the window next door? Same place) may be long but you'll have a laugh or two with the charming Neil while you wait, and a cup of the corn and crab chowder will warm you right up. Bring a bottle of white burgundy. Ever since the boyfriend's acquired a car for the weekends, we try to venture off of the island of Manhattan in search of good food. This time our search landed us at Petite Crevette. First of all... it is not technically on Union st, but around the corner. So don't worry when you come across a cafe that seem to have recently gone out of business. When you do find your way over to the actual entrance, you can give your name and phone number and prepare for a long wait (on a weekend night). We headed over to Calexico for a snack. And if you didn't bring a drink (it is BYOB), there's a wine store just around the corner as well. For entrees, we shared the mussels and grilled fish special (yellow tail). The mussels were miles apart from what I've tried in the city. All of the mussels were plump, fresh, and deliciously cooked in provencal style. The fish, however, wasn't as fresh and slightly overcooked. I guess we're spoiled w/ the readily available live fish of Chinatown. The service was great and the decor is very homely. We'll be back to try the cioppino and soft shell crab. :) read more

I am not sure how useful this review will be since I didn't have a main course the last time I dined here but here is what I do recall: -The places is BYOB, which is great because there is wine shop across the street. -I had the corn clam chowder which was OK, but a bit on the fishy side for my taste -The service was pretty good, and even though the waitress forgot my french fries, she was very apologetic and offered me desert on the house -everyone at my table had a main course and were very satisfied with it (2 whole fishes and a burger) The atmosphere makes you feel like you're in a little French bistro on the edge of the world. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Smith street, this is the place to go. read more
