The red pepper soup was so creamy and had such a nice flavor. It was the best! The soup came with the Chipotle Chicken Sandwich. I really like the sandwich too but something was extremely salty. I didn't notice it in the flavors while eating it, but later when I was so thirsty and drinking gallons of water I did. I've gone through the ingredients in the sandwich and can't figure out why it would be so salty. I hope it wasn't the soup, loved that soup! I cannot fault the food served at Petite Provence in the Dalles this October 27, 2020; however, I do fault the unsafe manner of service. Our waitperson sashayed through the customers without a mask, wearing a face shield that covered only the upper portion of her face. My husband and I felt Covid vulnerable as she stood within arm's reach taking our order breathing her breath at us. The food she delivered was exposed to her breath. When we explained our concerns to the manager, we were told it was a medical accommodation for which she apologized but otherwise could and would do nothing. Love this place! They don't do your basic breakfast they have a wide variety of delicious options! One of my favorites is the risotto cakes so yummy. The pastries are NEVER a let down even the basic croissants are delicious!!!! Also they have a variety of drinks Bloody Mary flights, mimosa flights, and they even offer espressos and alternative milks! She was extremely sympathetic, in total agreement about my position and the butter. She assured me they're having a meeting tomorrow and she will correct the situation. I often order eggs Benedict for breakfast, and have been extremely satisfied by the dish at the Portland locations of Petite Provence. I ordered the Benedict (traditional) this morning at the Petite Provence in The Dalles. The plate looked sad, messy, and the hollandaise sauce tasted like a bland and curdled milk sauce. I went back to the kitchen to inquire about the sauce, hoping there had been some mistake, and the wrong sauce had been applied to my eggs. I was met by an immediately hostile chef, who snapped at me that it was a "house hollandaise" with a secret recipe that he refused to disclose to me. I countered that I did not want to know the recipe but that it was necessary to disclose the ingredients to his customers. Real Hollandaise sauce is the quintessential butter sauce. Even with poor quality butter and egg, it can be delicious. Here at the petite Provence in the Dalles, however, THERE IS NO BUTTER IN THE HOLLANDAISE. The chef assured me of this fact, in a snippy way, and said "but if you're allergic to dairy, I wouldn't eat it." I felt disgusted. So many things were wrong about the way he handled that situation, on top of the curdled mess, that I left. read more

I treated myself to a rather decadent breakfast here one morning while driving to Trout Lake. My server suggested the salmon hash, which I will be honest, I wasn't sure about initially. The extent of my hash experience had been my mother's, which had turned me off to the idea of ever eating it again. Holy. Crap. It was so good. I stopped in with my mom on a bitter cloudy day in the Dalles. This bakery was the perfect little bit of sunshine we needed. Inside, we were greeted with a smile and offered which ever table we desired. The menu boasted a variety of delectable sounding meals, from breakfast items to soups and salads. Our server was very friendly, and gave us time to look over the menu. I ordered the turkey-date sandwich, and she had the corn beef sandwich. There was only one other couple in the restaurant, and our sandwiches came out reasonably quickly. My turkey and date was done exquisitely. I could detect all of the ingredients, and the brie was light and fresh. The potato salad was a nice addition, and I almost couldn't finish my plate. (Almost.) Before I left I chose a pastry to share, and settled on a squarish item that looked like a chocolate dream. Layers of creamy chocolate and chocolate cake and a chocolate ganache compiled to make anyone grab the nearest fork and dig in. My mom's eyelashes fluttered as she took the first bite, her eyebrows raised in anticipation. We both gobbled it down until only a shadow of chocolate remained on the plate. Very interesting, unique, tasty, well-prepared food. Excellent homemade bread, and a huge selection of unique pastries. I had risotto cakes, which I haven't seen on a menu before and they were delicious. It came with butternut squash that was so amazing, I wish I had the recipe. My husband loved his open faced pork sandwich, it was different than any we had tried before. His words: "amazing & unique!". The interior was very fitting and clean. They have 4 outdoor tables. The only thing I didn't love was our waitress, but another one in there seemed awesome, so I think we just sat in the wrong place. But food was so good, I still give it 5 stars. read more

My husband had the savory French toast. My sister had the Nicoise tartine. The corned beef hash was good but the potatoes were bland. The soup was ok. The gluten free bread was excellent! The chai was so good that I ordered a second cup to go. My husband liked his dish but it was difficult to eat. Leave asparagus uncut....placed on a larger plate....spread the food out on the plate. My sister thought the nicoise was amazing. The dish had a slice of sourdough layered with turkey, kalamata olives, pesto, tomatoes, and melted cheese. A small European style bakery and coffee shop. Located in old town the dalles across from the antique and thrift stores. This is a very small place and very classic. I went in for a snack and was sort of impressed walking out. It's like a cafe you would normally see in portland, but it has actually survived at least a year in small town the dalles. The pastry i got was good. They also have different style breads and gourmet pastries. I would go back since there is nothing else like it in the area that i know of and the prices were not too bad. read more

We went here this morning and things were just not right. We've been here before and also to several of the Portland locations. It was such a disappointment. First let me mention the positives. The restaurant itself is lovely inside. Our waitress was very very nice and was happy to reduce our bill after we explained the problems. Also, the croissant and jam was tasty. Unfortunately, the poor quality of all our breakfasts outweighed the good. First of all, the poached eggs on all five plates were over cooked with solid yolks. The polenta was thick, sludgy and over cooked. It was topped with a huge pile of cold, unmelted pre-shredded cheddar. Yuck. The crab cake Benedict special was not special. The cakes themselves were overly bready with a mushy texture and slightly off-tasting crab flavor. Worse, the bene was inexplicably served over plain bechamel. Bechamel should NEVER be served alone like that, it is meant to be used as an ingredient in other dishes, in a thin layer under broiled cheese, or as a base for a more flavorful sauce. The fact that your cook doesn't know that really shows his/her inexperience. In the Baked Eggs dish, the hash browns weren't pre-grilled as mentioned in the menu, they were pale and under seasoned, leading the entire dish to be heavy and mushy. Finally, the best of the bunch was the Eggs Provencal, but even there, the pesto was under seasoned and so coarsely ground that there were whole nuts and huge chunks of mashed whole basil. We hope you can improve and better train your cooks because it was not a good dining experience today. read more

I love these cute little restaurants, I frequent the lake Oswego location and was stoked to find one here while I vacationed with friends. Seated promptly and service was good but nothing outstanding. I wouldn't have even wrote a review but when you order EXTRA crispy hash browns, only to have them come out seared on both sides for no more than a minute each side then when asked about the extra crispy the waitress responds "yeah that's how they're coming out today, wish I could tell you differently but I can't." Like if making extra crispy hashbrowns was that big of a deal I could've gone to sharis and they would've made them, along with not having a sarcastic come back but oh well. On one occasion we actually had to bus our own table. They were very busy on this day and obviously under staffed...... but we stood at the front waiting for a table for quite some time (with the waitress passing by us at least 5 times) until finaly someone said "just sit where you want".
