I had two full years of grooming experience at the time, including handling large breeds, aggressive dogs, and creative grooming. Instead of being asked about safety protocols, client retention, or technique refinement, I was told my grooming photos "weren't the skill they were looking for," and advised to start over as a bather. Looking back I do definitely see things I needed to improve, but the grooms I showed were no where near needing to restart as a bather! I've since worked as the first hire for a Zooming Grooming franchise startup and have spent the past year doing house-call grooms for difficult dogs that salon groomers won't even touch. That same photo portfolio earned me multiple interviews elsewhere, praise from franchise owners, and client loyalty. It's one thing to require more experience. It's another to disguise personal insecurity and elitism as professional standards. Grooming managers should be encouraging rising talent--not gatekeeping it with vague critiques and power plays. If you're a new or self-taught groomer hoping for mentorship or advancement, be mindful of the culture here. Not all rejection is about your skills--sometimes it's about theirs.

A few months ago, when I was just a tiny 4 month old pup, my parents brought me here for some basic training and it couldn't have worked out any better. You see, I was extremely shy to people and other doggies back then. My dad entered me into the basic class instead of the initial puppy class, because he saw my potential. I just needed to be with some older dogs and it worked. After my 2nd class, I was already coming out of my shell and started to play with the other doggies. By the time graduation came in week 6, I was already the top performer, or at least that is what my mum said. I quickly realized that the classes were for my parents as much as for me. We figured out how to communicate including the basic sit, down, come, leave it and walking on a leash without pulling for starters. The best thing about the classes are that you can get endless treats. Once you figure this out, doing tricks for my humans is not only fun, but tasty, too. Trainers are good, have great patience and offer makeup classes if a conflict arises. Add in the fact that the store has a wide variety of food and snacks and it became the highlight of my week. Come in and try it, and if you are on your best behavior, you might even walk away with a fluffy toy like my yellow chicken. It's great for tossing around during my nightly zoomies.
