As soon a# I tried my first bites of spanakopita and moussaka here I was transported back to Greece, and the spicy cheese dip cannot be beat. On top of your Greek favorites, they hand roll their own pastas, although that is not indicated on the menu. They also offer various gourmet specials - squab, whole lobster, chicken liver mousse, cod cheeks are just a few I can recall off hand at various times over the years. They use high quality ingredients and offer wine from some of Greece's best regions. The lunch menu offer delicious options including appetizers, salads, soups, handhelds, and a couple of hearty dishes. We enjoyed the grilled octopus: thin slices on a bed of greens. Beautifully prepared, flavorful and tender. I had the lentil soup and a salad of cooked dandelion greens with feta. My husband had a gyro made with slices gyro-style pork (a beautiful twist on what is thought to always be lamb). He was given fries and a Greek salad of tomatoes, cucumber, olives, onion, feta. This is a hands-on experience; by the end I looked like I was auditioning for a role in "Game of Thrones." The dolme? All food from a restaurant tastes better when you eat it at the restaurant, right? But I'm not very smart, and I didn't have time to luxuriate over my food, so I got my food to go. So this review is for takeout food. My cold appetizers (baba ganoush) tasted amazing. A+ for the baba ganoush at Petos. By the way: they call it "papa ganoush" on the menu. I'm not sure if that's a play on words or a reference to something or what, but it's all the same name for that eggplant and tahini dip we all know and love. My hot food (falafel lavash with fries) tasted fine, but I'm certain it would have tasted better if it was eaten hot! Cold falafel is sad and should be avoided. The lavash was great, as were the vegetables stuffed inside the wrap. I ended up dipping the falafel lavash in the baba ganoush, and it all tasted great in the end. The service here is so friendly and warm. I arrived a little bit early to pick up my food, and a woman came out from the back of the kitchen to apologize for my food not being ready. I was like, "No apologies! I'm the one who is early!" But they wouldn't hear of it. I want to come back and dine at the restaurant. The inside dining room is super cute -- everything is blue and white, with plants and lots of bright, natural light. There is seating that looks out onto downtown Carmel's Main Street, so you can see the cars and people as you eat. It's a nice vibe. read more

While exploring the Carmel Art District we found this place. Our server was lovely and the ambiance of the place made us feel like we were not in Indiana. My favorite dish was the lemon soup. I wanted so much to like this place, but it definitely fell flat. One of our friends highly recommended it, so we finally got the chance to make it in. We arrived a little before 6pm, and there were only like two other tables occupied. We were greeted by a young man who was friendly. He brought us the specials, drink and main menus. My husband and I both ordered a beverage, which came out fairly quickly. We already knew what we wanted to order so when he came back with the drinks, we got the bone marrow appetizer. I got the souvlaki platter with the Greek potatoes, green beans and rice. My husband ordered the gyro sandwich with a Greek salad. It took a really long time for the bone marrow appetizer to come out, the waiter came out once to tell us it would be another few minutes for it to be out. When it came out, there were two pieces of marrow on the plate with lots of seasonings. The first piece of marrow only had a teaspoon size bit of edible marrow in it. I moved onto the second piece that was underneath of it, which had tons of marrow in it, but it was lukewarm at best. I could not even eat all of it. I didn't say anything at the time, because I'm still hoping for a good rest of the meal and I did enjoy the seasonings that were on the marrow. Our entrées came out, not too long after we finished the marrow. My lamb was cut in cubes which was what I expected because it was a skewer platter. I got about ten pieces of lamb and only three of them I could actually chew and swallow. The rest were so hard and grizzly, I could not eat them. My rice was flavorful yet it was dry, the potatoes were the same way. The feta cheese that was on my husband's Greek salad was almost a yellowish color, which had him concerned so he didn't eat very much of it. Anywhere else that we've had a gyro the lamb meat is shaved inside of the sandwich. These were cubes like my skewers were, and he also could not chew through the meat. The waiter did not come back to the table until we had stopped eating our food. He asked how everything was, and we explained to him while I thought the rice and the potatoes were ok, my meat and his were not something that we could consume. He apologized and told us he would bring us the bill. In my head I thought since he didn't offer to bring us anything else to try that he would at least take a little bit off of the bill, but that did not happen. It was $100 for food that was not worth that price. This was our first time trying Petos, and unfortunately our last. read more

Ambiance is great in this little restaurant that feels like it transports you to Greece. The sampler platter comes with dolmades, hummus, tzatziki and a feta dip but you can sub any of them out (may be an extra uncharge). The pita here is well made and paired well with the tzatziki and taramosalata - hummus was ok. The chicken gyro was juicy and had a slight nice honey mustard added which gave the dish great balance. The lamb gyro was dry and chewy but you could tell this was real lamb and not the processed lamb/beef you get at the store. Potato wedges were excellent. Update to previous review: I forgot to update the review a few visits ago, but they had already addressed every concern I raised in my previous review. Floor no longer has excess soapy feel, no plastic covers over the tablecloths, music doesn't cut in and out. It's such a breath of fresh air to eat in a restaurant with such friendly staff and great food these days. I feel treated like a 'regular' despite only going there once in a blue moon. A whole hearted 5 stars and I'd give more if it were possible. There is a big parking lot behind the building accesible from the side streets (think alley) and even a backdoor to gain access to the restaurant. You are greeted right away upon entering. We had a reservation since we had a group. Our waiter Michael did a wonderful job greeting everyone as my guests trickled in and immediately took their drink order. He also answered all of our questions. I have to say this young waiter made our night, as he clearly enjoys his job and is attentative without hovering. That is a special skill. The interior of this restaurant is nicely decorated and in a way that conveys Greek island life. The menu offers Greek staples but also quite a few items you don't usually find around the midwest. We were given a complimentary appetizer of pita bread with a Tappenade like topping. Nice. We shared a hummus plate which is probably the best hummus I have ever eaten. OMG. We also tried the Skordalia, which is cold garlic pureed potatoes. I wasn't a big fan of the consistency, but i t had a nice flavor to it. The rest of my table enjoyed it a lot though. The majority ordered the lamb shank aka Youvetsi and all were singing the praises of this dish. The Moussaka, while not exactly visually pleasing was highly praised and quickly devoured... it was that good (I got a little taste of it). Garides Saganaki, which are pan shrimp with wine and feta, were bursting with flavor. Large sized shrimp with a flavorful sauce and things such as olives and tomato pieces. Delicious. I personally ordered the Mix Grill plate and substituted Greek potatoes instead of the rice. The potatoes could have used a bit more time cooking, but were nicely seasoned. The skewers of meat and shrimp were excellent. Nice large shrimp that were perfectly grilled, not overcooked. The chicken and the pork were so tender, you really didn't need a knife. And so flavorful. The whole dish was a delight. While it's a bit on the pricey side, keep in mind that the portions are pretty big and everything is delicious and of high quality. read more

We recently learned of Petos through a Yelp friend, and we are thrilled she shared this phenomenal restaurant with us. We went to Petos last Tuesday for lunch (Noon - 2:00), and the entire experience from attentive service, delicious food, and the cozy but spacious atmosphere was exceptional. The colors and decor are light and airy with coastal decor. The restaurant is great for large groups or an intimate dinner. As you enter the restaurant, two dining areas are on each side of the entrance. On the other side of the dessert area is another large dining area perfect for a private gathering. Free street parking is an option. We lucked out and saw a parking space open directly in front of the restaurant. A convenient parking lot is directly behind the restaurant. You'll need to walk to the front of the restaurant to enter, but you can exit through the back door into the parking lot. We were warmly greeted by our server, Peter. He is a large reason our experience was so gratifying. Warm, knowledgeable, with sincere interest and confident recommending beers, entrees, and desserts that were spot-on. My husband wasn't familiar with the available beers, and Peter recommended the perfect beer after learning of my husband's preferences. It was tasteful and enjoyable. He ordered the amazing lamb gyros served with french fries. The marinated meat was tender, thinly sliced, and delicious stuffed into the warm pita bread with fresh toppings. My husband loves lamb and was totally impressed with the gyros. He now wants to return soon. I ordered the meatless Moussaka, with layers of eggplant, zucchini, and potatoes and garlic tomato sauce with a rich bechamel sauce. It was served with a generous fresh side salad. Peter overheard me remark to my husband, I didn't care for the meat in the moussaka. Peter checked with the chef and returned to surprise me before ordering. A meatless version was just coming out of the oven. I was thrilled and so appreciative of his thoughtfulness. And my favorite part of lunch was the desserts. When my husband was checking out the restaurant, he found a large display case filled with heavenly desserts. Even though I had already decided on dessert, I immediately went to check out the dessert case, which was filled with stunning delicacies. The preview only confirmed I had to try the bougatsa, which is phyllo dough with custard, sugar, and cinnamon, served warm from the oven in my case. I have become obsessed with these remarkable pastries. I couldn't deuvour the entire pastry as much as I tried. Just trust me, if you love warm custard as much as I do, try the bougatas. Our foodie group came here for dinner one night and OMG, what a treat it was for me! I have not heard of Petos, but it is known for having amazing Greek food, and I can confirm that this is true! The ambiance is beautiful and gorgeous. You do feel like you are in Greece sitting in the dining room. Our server was a young, enthusiastic fellow who had a great personality and an amazing memory. He remembered one of our friends Kyle from several months ago when we came here for dinner. I was very impressed. He also provided top notch, excellent customer service. Hungry for Greek we drove by our favorite place forgetting they are closed on Tuesday. So a search on Yelp brought us to Petos. Never been before so new place to try. First parking is a pain around Main St Carmel, and traffic uggh. Once we parked and went in we were immediately greeted and sat. Our server was very friendly. We looked over the menu and decided we'd get basically what we'd get at our favorite restaurant. Chicken Souvlaki, Saganaki, and Spanakopita. They were out of Spanakopita so I switched to Lamb Gyro thinking it was closest to traditional Gyro. Food didn't take long. Our server did forget our tea and forgot to put in the order for Saganaki. We did get both quickly after mentioning it. Our favorite restaurant serves a small salad with bread, no salad or bread here. Our favorite restaurant serves the best Greek Potatos, no potatoes here. Chicken Souvlaki and rice was pretty good. Very much like what we get elsewhere. Lamb Gyro was awful, very gamy not pleasant. I never eat the tzatziki but ate some to help cover the meat. The green beans ,with I think Peas, were almost cooked to mush. The Saganaki was ok and probably the best part of the meal but it wasn't Kasseri Cheese that has that nice bit of sharpness. Sorry to have to update my previously good review with such a bad review, but the last two times we visited the experience was a one star situation. We were willing to give Peto's a second try after one bad experience but the second (and what will be our last) visit was worse than the last time so things are not going in the right direction and I cannot support or recommend Petos going forward. In the last two visits we had cold food, long waits for food, long waits for service, and after 20 minutes of waiting for the bill so we could pay and leave and asking three times for the bill, I finally had to go to stand at the hostess area to force the staff to let me pay so we could leave. Tables near us were left uncleaned for the entire time we were there and the staff were rude and just made excuses. Being understaffed does not excuse bad service cold food and dirty unclean tables left for 1-2 hours. We saw food brought to another table that was said to not be what they ordered. There was shouting in the kitchen audible in the dining room. It was one of the most unpleasant dining experiences in Carmel we have ever had. read more

My husband doesn't like hummus and liked this hummus. It was so smooth and creamy. The red pepper whipped feta was the star though....it was SO GOOD! It had a little kick to it in a good way. The pita was warm and fresh. Perfect. The dolmades were amazing too. If you've had them before - they're exactly how you want them. The service was a struggle unfortunately. But I think our server was just new/didn't quite know what he was doing. I don't blame the restaurant. It's just a one time experience. If we had a newer, more experienced server, it would've been different. My husband and I were fine to wait. My husband asked for his soup before his food and it came with the dinner and our wine took quite while but all in all, we had a great experience. We want to try something different so we dined at Petos Saturday night and were so glad we did! Our server was very friendly and so was the owner. It was wonderful seeing him mingle with the guests. The restaurant definitely had a Greek vibe and took me back to when we visited the Greek Isles. It was decorated in blue and white and made me feel as if I was back for another visit. We ordered Saganaki and Whole Grilled squid with Greek spices as our appetizers. For the entrees, we ordered Souvlaki Chicken and Pork Both came with delicious Greek potatoe fries and a Greek side salad. I had the ink pasta with octopus and shrimp in a wine sauce with garlic. We've been trying to eat at Petos since they opened, but getting in is a bit tough! We were finally able to make a reservation, and found out through the process that they aren't taking walk ins during prime dinner time. So plan ahead! Everything, food-wise, was fantastic. Truly. We've been looking for excellent Greek food in the area for years and have been disappointed overall. Here? Not so much. The Chicken Souvlaki was amazing, the Lemon Chicken and potatoes delicious, Spanakopita layered with fresh spinach, feta, dill and mint, and the flakiest filo dough was perfect, the lamb shank was a hit, kebabs were great. They serve the dips with warm, fresh seasoned pita. Everything was really tasty. Service was a bit slow. But the restaurant was packed, and three young servers were handling everything. They were kind and gracious, and working really hard to take good care of a lot of people. We'll definitely be back! They're working through some growing pains, but that's nothing a little more time won't fix. Petos is a very welcome addition to the local food scene. We're excited to return! read more

Where to dine on Valentines Day? We were looking for a new restaurant and Petos fit the bill. This Greek dining experience offer all the traditional Greek dishes. Starting with the wait staff, we couldn't have been more pleased. Not being a Greek Cuisine expert our waiter Colin was very helpful in explaining the various offerings on the menu. Per his recommendations, I ordered the Youvetsi a slow roasted, braised lamb shank. It was came with Greek orzo pasta, topped with mizithra cheese. It was fantastic and truly a memorable dish. The menu online is different than what they have currently (due to opening) so I am assuming they will add more based off what the waitress told us. Started off pretty strong, wasn't too busy. We got our appetizers right away. Our main entrees they were delivered all at different times and some things were missing. A couple of our dishes came with fries and they failed to mention their fry machine was broken until we asked where the fries were they substituted rice for it but still I think that's something you should tell guests! Food was good, I liked my gyro platter. They served the lamb diced rather than shaved like most Greek places, flavor was good.
