I really enjoyed my dinner here. It's a small eating area with a few tables for 1 or 2, but not good for big groups. My fiancé has the spicy gyro, which e inhaled, and fries, which I of course stole. The fries were crispy and delicious and perfect. I had the Petra Maza, which is a mixed plate of hummus, baba ghannouj, falafel, warm pita, lettuce, tomato, and a few olives. The presentation was beautiful, and it was so much food. I echo the suggestion for getting fountain beverages rather than cans, and the ordering/payment process was a little confusing. All you need to know is that you NEED to go to Petra & try the spicy gyro. And don't skip the fries either. The portions are HUGE and just as tasty. It's the perfect spot to grab a late-night bite (open til 4:30 am weekends!) or get lunch to go. They offer a small variety of canned sodas, with only a few dine-in tables. The cafe is small. If you weren't looking for it, you'd walk right by without a notice. But the service is great, the fries are crispy, and the gyros are exploding with flavor. Oh, and did I mention CHEAP? I have never eaten here in person, but I order through Door Dash for here at least one to two times per week! When I moved to Indianapolis earlier this year I began my search for the most delicious baba ganoush...which is more difficult than you'd think! Not many places have the delicious spread on the menu. In order to make the delivery minimum I knew I had to order a sandwich or platter as well so I chose the chicken shawarma wrap. The baba ganoush is pretty good but a little heavy on the oil topping and not as chunky as I prefer. The real knock out star though is the chicken shawarma! This place knows flavor. Each piece of chicken was spiced evenly and cooked evenly with no crunchy bits. They load up a very soft (and very giant!) pita with that goodness and slather it in the perfect amount of tzaziki. The flavor of the lamb on the rotisserie was amazing! I was so impressed with the quality of food at Petra that I had lunch with them a second time. This time I had the Philly Sandwich. The sandwich was amazing and had great flavors. The atmosphere of Petra is very laid back. If you are expecting a quick in and out then you should try somewhere else but if you want a great lunch and a great conversation then Petra is you are place. Petra has become my "it's 3am and I'm starving" go-to spot. As far as I know, they have the latest hours of any other restaurant in the area. If they were closer to my job, I'd check them out during normal waking hours. I'm a big fan of their shawarma and I recently snagged a piece of a friend's lamb kabob - it was amazing! I've heard good things about the gyros, so that's next on my list. The pita bread is very soft and their portions are large enough to have leftovers. Petra is a great find for Mass Ave, as most of the other restaurants are more American-style cuisine. Service is fast, though the two guys who operate the place seem to be short on words (not that I'm complaining). Only reason not giving a 5 star is because they messed up one of our orders. We ordered 2 kabob platters and instead got 1 of the platters and the kabob wrap. It was no big deal as we would eat it. Not much different and totally understandable with a mild language barrier, but we definitely could have expected that. They were great and offered to make a whole other order. I'm stoked that Mass Ave has another "fast-casual" place to eat! This place is a gem during this hectic IndyFringe Festival time. I needed to get something quick and the chicken shawarma meal did not disappoint. It was a full to-go container, with two sauces, and a side salad for a really great price. So this was my second time eating at Petra cafe. Starting with the atmosphere and decor, it's a nice little place. Service is fast and staff has been friendly in my experience. Plus it's open late which is always dope to me. The first time I got the spicy gyro and this time I got the traditional. I'm not the greatest when it comes to spice, but I do like to feel it a bit. The spicy was way too spicy for me personally so I didn't think it was the best item for me to review, although, it did have a great flavor. Like i said, this time I got the traditional gyro with Tzatziki. This one I was able to eat, but it didn't have an much flavor as I personally would've liked. Just felt like it was missing something. The meat was good and seasoned well, but I think something about the tzatziki sauce was off for me. However, still a pretty good place in the city to get a gyro and I'll need to try some of the other items on the menu. I love Petra. I usually get either the gyro or spicy gyro with fries. The fries are nicely seasoned, and everything is made to order. I also regularly get the hummus or baba ganoush. They mix those to order as well. They both have great flavor -- the hummus is brighter with more citrus and garlic flavor and the baba ganoush is more acidic and smokier tasting. I have gotten the baklava, but, while the flavor was great, I didn't feel got enough for the $$. Still, though the flavor was quite good. The shawarma is also certainly worth getting -- very savory. Well, that hit the spot. This hole in the wall, just opened on Mass Ave, is exactly what this part of downtown needed: a place for a quick, satisfying meal. Petra Cafe is a taverna with all of the basics -- falafel, kebab, shawarma, gyro. Everything from the baba ganoush to the tahini is made fresh and in-house. There's also a few extras, like fruit smoothies, medy burgers, and "Philly steak." The space is cozy and petite, with high tables for about fourteen guests, and is perfect for takeout. I may just have been very hungry, but the falafel was some of the best I've had. So happy to see some good food in the $10 range on Mass Ave. Sometimes I just don't want to spend $20 on a meal. I stopped by here around 2pm on a weekday for a late lunch. The interior is small and half of the tables were in use. I looked at the menu which is on 3 or 4 large TV above the counter area. I opted for the Gyro meal and asked for a side salad instead of fries. I also got some hummus to try. I ordered to go and the wait was less than 10 minutes. It is a one man show but he was calm, friendly and never frustrated. In fact he communicated that it would be a few minutes before my order was ready as he was cooking another order. Great way to set expectations! Once I got home I dug into my Gyro. It was packed with flavor and a healthy portion of meat! The tzakiki sauce was fresh and cool. The whole thing was very filling. My only complaint is the pita was not as buttery as I have had at other Greek places but it was still tasty! The salad was everything I expected. Iceberg lettuce, tomato, onion, feta oregano and greek dressing. The hummus was a little salty for me and lacked depth of flavor. I like a little more garlic and seasonings in mine. Over all I liked the food and had a great experience and all for $15!! I could not find their hours posted on their door but I did try to stop by here around 11pm on Sunday and they were closed, so maybe call ahead to check on their late hours. read more

It's wonderful to get fast casual dining on Mass Ave, especially a different type of cuisine that isn't represented as well on this street. You may miss it walking by but it is definitely worth trying out! I got the shawarma (chicken) sandwich and it is probably some of the best I've ever had. Typically when I've had shawarma, it has been flavorful but also dry. This was packed with flavor (very reminiscent of Indian and Pakistani spices and flavors), but was also a slightly wet curry, which made the sandwich that much better.
