The new store is a little cramped, but has everything the Petsmart locations in La Jolla and Point Loma have. I came here for the uncomplicated chore of buying cat food, but the associates made it very pleasant, and were friendly without being overbearing. I really like how they have consolidated all the live animals into one area, so you don't have to run around the store looking for somebody if you have questions. Plus, I feel like they're easier to keep an eye on if they need attention. Overall, I'm really glad there's a Petsmart in my neighborhood now, and since it's next to target, it will be easy to add into my routine chores! read more

I received a call telling me that my grooming appointment would not be able to happen as scheduled due to their location being short staffed. I advised the rep that I work during the day and wanted a afternoon appointment since i am not able to drop off my dog during the day when they are open. I was offered another 8:30 am appointment then a 1 pm appointment. I asked if they do any later appointments anymore and i was advised they do not do any appointments after 2 pm any longer due to their staffing issues. When i told them i would most likely have to go somewhere else due to their limited schedule the rep sounded relieved and enthusiastically thanked me as they couldn't hang up quick enough. Sounds like some management issues have been going on for a while. During my last two visits the employees were stressed and making comments about schedules while they were running around trying to get open and pups checked in. While i was there last time, a store manager came in and asked they girls if they knew what dog pooped in the middle of the store. Keep in mind the groomers are in a side closed door room and do not have visibility to the main floor. It seemed like the manager was waiting for them to stop helping customers to go clean it up. She finally walked away without saying anything but she sure did make it awkward for those of us in the room that weren't employees. read more

This Petsmart and their employees (esp. Natalia/Nat the manager and Aimee who helped me at the register) really helped me out when the food I had ordered from Amazon for my cat failed to arrive on time. My cat is allergic to just about everything, but they were able to find ten cans of his special food for me when every other pet supply store around was out or closed for the night. Please bring your pets to get groomed at a reputable business. Don't just trust these big-name stores because they seem to not care as much for your pets. I brought my dog in for a grooming appointment by Carolina two weeks ago. We picked my dog up and she was meek and her tail was trimmed super short even though I told Carolina to leave it as is when we came in. My dog also came home with a cut on her belly and this wasn't disclosed to us. We immediately called back and Carolina said that she wasn't responsible for the cut but that my dog came in with scabs and cuts on her belly amd thighs. My dog has never had, and does not, have cuts. She lied and put the blame on us by making up imaginary cuts on my dog after we found one cut from them. They refunded us for the grooming and one of the employees, Miri, said they will refund vet bills if we want to get her checked by her vet. However, Miri did not say that she only meant Petsmart's own vet. When we tried to get the refund she gave me the runaround and was quite rude on the phone. Their manager, Jerry, finally met with me and refunded the vet bills. This isn't about the money. It is honestly not worth it risking your pet's safety to go here. The employees were rude and seem poorly trained, especially since Carolina made up cuts and scabs being there when they weren't and denied the one cut we were complaining about. read more

I called this location to book a grooming for my 9-month old kitten. I told them she's a long hair and I just wanted a cut to cool her off for the summer. They told me she had to have a bath too--they don't just do cuts. So I agreed and they made the appointment with Carolina M. They said since it's her first grooming, I can come at 8:00 AM and come a little early to avoid any dogs. So that Monday morning I drive into the parking lot and a woman gets out of her car looking really angry and hostile--like very unhappy to have to work on a Monday morning. I say to myself, I hope that's not the groomer. So I wait for a few minutes and go ring the buzzer at 7:50. The same person comes to the door and snaps at me that if I'm there for grooming, I can't show up until my appointment. I try to tell her that someone told me to show up a few minutes early but she cut me off and said "NO YOU JUST HAVE TO WAIT!" I tried to tell her that's fine, I'll just wait for the appointment, but she talked over me that I need to wait and slammed and locked the door. A few minutes later the same hostile person opens the door and tells me to come in. I'm carrying a big heavy carrier, but she doesn't hold the door for me. She directs me into a room where another woman also looks very unhappy to have to work on Monday. Nobody says hello or good morning. The other woman's energy is not as angry so I hope the groomer is her. But to my horror, my groomer is the original nasty person. She proceeds to fire questions at me that seem to be designed so that she doesn't have to do her first grooming of the day. She says because it's her first grooming, they "probably can't do it." I tell her since it's the first time, my Vet gave her a little sedative but she's sweet. She jumps on that and says "we can't do the grooming if you gave her something and we don't know what is!" At that moment I realized my Vet's office was open and I could just call them and ask the name. But I realized at that moment that this was a blessing in disguise since I do not want this vile female to touch my cat. I was really alarmed that such a hateful person would be giving her the first grooming without me present. She storms out before I can talk and says she's going to ask the manager. The other woman is a little nicer and just says they need to know what the sedative is. I tell her to please just give me my kitten. She says that the manager will probably just help me. Again I say, "you know what? This has been nasty from the start so please just give me my cat." I take the carrier towards the front door, and Miss nasty comes out of the office and tells me that I need to find out what sedative it is. I tell her that I'm leaving but just want to speak to the manager. She says fine and leaves. I then tell the manager how awful this woman has been and I don't intend to call the Vet because I don't want her to touch my cat. She tells, me she was just transferred there and doesn't know the people but she will talk to her. I say, "Good luck, it won't do any good, and I don't want her to ever touch my cat." She then says she will call the other location where they have a nice cat groomer and try to get me in. I said okay--do you want my information? She said she will get it from the groomer and call me either way. Big surprise...she never called. PetSmart lost a customer thanks to that nasty groomer and I'm so glad I listened to my instincts and that something came up to get me the heck out of there. I'm afraid she would have hurt my cat and lied about it. These groomers seem angry that they have to work. And why would someone this hateful be allowed around animals??? read more

There is a New Grooming Manager Tammy and she is doing a great job. She and Denise did a full grooming/haircut as well on my 2 Bichon white Poodles and they both look great. Tammy has such a sweet concerned attitude with everyone that arrives. her patience and understanding make for a great managers as well as her ability to teach other her staff. I have never once had a worse experience with customer service. I went to get my puppy groomed at Petsmart. On the phone I was told he would be getting a trim and bath. Upon the appointment, they said the puppy package does not include a trim. It was my first time here and I've only had this puppy for three month. One hour into the appointment they called and said they can not complete the service due to his anxiety., which is fine whatever but don't make the customer feel like it's her fault?? I specifically told them before the appointment that I was working with a trainer and they still had to make me feel bad about the situation. Nannette and Carolina were nothing but rude and disrespectful and I will not be returning here. They actually made me feel horrible about my puppy and that is not right. I would recommend training your employees on customer service first before having them work for a company that is training other living things :) read more

Took my dogs here to get groomed. One of them came back perfectly clean but the other one came back clean but the next day had a severe ear infection and severe skin irritation. Granted he is a bulldog and they are prone to both, i don't think the groomer was really aware of that about the breed and probably used some generic shampoo. I recommend just turning away all bulldogs because they are not experienced in them. If you have a bulldog of any kind DO NOT GO HERE. read more

I stopped in today on my lunch break to get some goldfish for our classroom aquarium. I was greeted warmly by Sammy as I entered. Laura was working on an Beta display. She saw me approaching. As it happens I will be in the market for a Beta in the near future, but that wasn't the reason for my trip. Laura told me all about Betas but I didn't have to ask. I've owned Betas in the past so as she was telling me everything about the fish I didn't have the heart to tell her I knew a thing or two about them. I let her tell me everything she knew about Betas which was about as much as the average Beta owner would likely know. She asked me if there was anything she could help me with. I told her I stopped into buy some goldfish. She asked me how many I said 3 or maybe 4. I also asked her that they all be easy to tell apart. She went the added trouble of catching the exact 4 that I pointed out. In the past I've been on a similar mission and don't feel I got as good service, this gal quickly located and netted all 4 fish I requested . I've never seen anyone do as good a job at it than her. By my review you are probably wondering why I rated only 5 stars. Well as an Educator, I was disappointed that I didn't rate a discount as I purchased said fish for our classroom. Secondly, as a veteran, I was disappointed they had no discount for me there. Thirdly as a 62 year young man I did not appreciate the fact that there was no Senior Discount. As an Educator, a Veteran, and a Senior I sincerely believe I've earned the discounts. As such I seek out establishments that offer the discounts I've earned. I want to let everyone know that the customer service here when found is really good. I went to pick up some dog food and brought it home to find it infested with meal worms and moths with the food being covered in webbing. I called the store and they replaced it for me. We went through bags of food to ensure that I wasn't bringing home another infested bag. Customer service is very important. I'm grateful for the way the staff member handled the situation with professionalism and making sure it was made right. read more

I have been taking my 11 year old miniature poodle to a Petsmart groomer for over 5 years now, however decided to try this location out since it was closer to us. My dog is very easy to groom and very docile. The Petsmart groomers on Aero Drive love when I bring her there but the Genesee location did not live up to the standards of their other locations. I brought my dog in for a bath but when we picked her up it did not seem like she got a bath at all. It looked like all they did was try to brush her and only shaved her anal gland region. The groomers there were nice but the job they did was really sub-par and disappointing. I can understand the groomers might have been overwhelmed right before the holidays but we will definitely not be coming back. I highly recommend the Petsmart on Aero for grooming needs rather than this location. read more

I brought my Chow-Shepard in last month for grooming/bathing. At nearly 90lb he is more than a handful and dislikes bathing...... I was so pleased with Carly, she welcomed us warmly and somehow "knew" how to relate to him (A huge plus for me, as I hate leaving him with strangers!!!!). She did an exceptional job with everything and he was gorgeous and HAPPY when I picked him up. I will remain a loyal customer as long as Carly is there. **This review is for the groomers** I usually go to the Murphy Canyon location but I decided to try coming here since it was closer to home. What a mistake. First of all, I walked in & the groomer was on hold on the phone. No smile, no eye contact, no "I'll be right with you!," no acknowledgment whatsoever. When she was finally off the phone, still no smile or, "How may I help you today?" It was, "Have you been here before." I felt like I was being a bother to her instead of a welcomed customer. I let her know that my dog was very nervous around strangers & had behavioral problems but he was fine if I was out of sight. I've been taking him to the Petsmart in Murphy canyon to get him groomed & they had no issues after I left. I wanted to run to Target really quick, (it would take me less than 5 mins), but she told me not to because they would call my name over loudspeaker & his nail trim would only take 10mins. Petsmart, if you don't want your customers to leave, provide them a waiting area with chairs/benches to sit and wait. How ridiculous. There was absolutely nowhere to sit & wait, AND it took longer than 10 minutes. Once I picked up my dog, the groomer told me to bring him to the park and "release his energy first." She was very rude and insensitive. She had a horrible attitude & I regret the fact that I did not ask for her name. My dog has been attacked by other dogs before AT the dog park before, and it has made him nervous around other dogs since then. ALSO, my dog was returned to me with a bloody paw. I know if you cut the nail too far, it will bleed. MY POINT IS, I AM NEVER COMING BACK. I will drive the extra miles to Murphy Canyon to have my dog groomed there because they are friendly, understanding, and make me feel like a valued customer. This location is convenient and clean. When we go for walks Sashabelle frequents here. Clean, easy to find items. All the animals seem very healthy and the Store manager calvin cares about the store, staff, and Petsmart furry, scaly, fishy residents!! I have been coming here since it's grand opening, and the events have been very fun, the sales have been plentiful, and the staff have been very resourceful and pleasant. We have always used a local groomer, but decided to walk into the Petsmart in Clairemont and inquire about the grooming services and costs. The employee in the grooming department, was very professional and nice, explained to us all the services and costs and although it was more expensive than we normally paid we decided to make an appointment to get our dog groomed (bath and haircut) for 3 pm on Saturday 02/21/15. When we got to the appointment we were told that they could wash her but didn't have time to give her the haircut. Initially they blamed us saying we didn't make the right appointment, when we insisted and told them what the services we had requested and quoted for were, they then started blaming the girl who set up the appointment for "not writing it down correctly" ... although it clearly showed on their journal. A lot of "I'm sorry" but since they had our phone number, and I'm sure they would have called us if we hadn't showed up, a courtesy call to let us know that they couldn't honor their promise would have been nice.. and prevented me for driving 15 miles each way to get there. Needles to say we didn't set up another appointment and we took our dog back to our local and more reliable (and inexpensive) groomer. read more

Been going there for years. Had a couple of amazing groomers who really understood my littliest dog had anxiety about being there. I did everything they taught me to make his experience better and he began to enjoy working with them. Today i show up for my appt and was assured when I made the appt there would be no problem. Well that wasn't the case a young lady declined to take my 5 pound dog because she was afraid of him. I explained please read his chart and there are notes about the best way to handle him. She quoted me policy and procedures and refused. I understand policies and know there are always exceptions. Consumers have a choice. Petsmart needs to remember that and hire associates that are solution oriented. I miss my previous groomer. Stori was her name and she was a true representation of outstanding customer service. My chihuahua/min-pin mix was due for a nail trimming and other places (including my old vet) would provide that service for $15!! At PetSmart, the cost of a bath *including* nail trimming and anal gland expression was $15, so I thought why not. Plus I had a coupon for a first time grooming visit. First of all let me start by saying if you need anything for your pet this is the place to go. I am only giving this review due to the bad experience I had last night. The employees seem a bit off...last night they had one register open and I saw they had at least 5-6 employees working...one manning the register , one with a pink shirt holding a clip board ( doing nothing )...and the others kind of wandering aimlessly. Had to wait in line for five minutes while the lady in front of me told a long ass story about how she needed something...no idea...anyways instead of opening another register the employees just sat there while the line got longer and longer. The pink shirt lady just stared at me...kind of creepy. Get your shit together people , please...no time to wait to buy a damn filter for my fish tank...you have registers , open them! read more

Took our new pup to PetSmart to get him situated in his new home. We had asked 2 employees coming in about food choices and skin care. Neither employee was confident in what they were telling us. But then employee Steven overheard our conversation and came over to assist. He was not only knowledgeable about food but could give us real advice on skin care for our new family member. Steven gave us outstanding service right before we lost confidence that the employees would be able to help us. He really took the time to find everything we needed and gave excellent advice based on experience with his own similar breed. We would have left frustrated and empty handed if it hadn't been for his help. read more

I'm just rating the fish section. The water was cloudy and the tanks were way overstocked. Obviously at the store it's common to have overstocked tanks because fish have a high turnover, but there were so many goldfish, minnows, and platys in the tanks they barely had room to move. There was poop on the bottom and dead fish everywhere. The prices are very low but the fish look so unhealthy. The guy working at the fish area had no idea how to care for fish and made no effort to educate people who were trying to buy a live animal. Petco on Clairemont Mesa is a million times better than this place. This petsmart location makes me appreciate how clean other places are. read more

most of the employees are very helpful, except for one. me and my friend went on to try to buy a 16 cent goldfish, and we went in the first time and they sold it to us, easy. the second time we went to get another, the girl with the green strip in her hair told us that we couldn't get a fish because we'd kill it. (even though they have 15 dead fish lying on the ground in the tank right now.) she practically carded us, for trying to buy a 16 cent goldfish. we finally went back with our parents and we bought a goldfish, and it was practically dead. if we didn't buy it, it would join the 15 on the bottom of the tank right now, all the other employees were great tho. read more

This review is for their grooming salon. Stephanie is AMAZING and treats our pups like her own. She is extremely accommodating and understanding of any/all of our random requests. I also trust her judgment and taste, I've seen other groomers (at different stores). I hate when we pay for full trimming, but the pup's hair is still so long and we have to go back sooner.
