This place kills the summer party scene and is just a perfect mix between a place you'll eat at and then come back a few hours later for 25 gin and tonics. The staff is pretty solid and the set-up is great. The line is usually pretty long but if you're going to Phebe's, you most likely have a drinking coat on. I used to love coming here but it's been a while and the service here tonight was the worst. It starts off with me arriving at the location and being asked for my ID. I get it, it's a bar and you need to check to see if I'm legal... But it's a different story when a Caucasian female comes in right behind be and she doesn't get carded. At this point I'm going to play the race card cause what more could it be? The female that came in behind me wasn't 80 years old with a cane so why wouldn't she get carded? NEXT our waitress Cara ... Where do I begin? We ordered a pitcher which came with 30 wings. I asked for half bbq and half dry, I was told it can only be in increments of 10. So obviously I would order 10 bbq, 10dry, and 10 mild. When our wings came there was 10 dry, 10 mild, and 10 spicy. When we asked our waitress Cara Where our BBQ was she said no you ordered 10 hot, 10mild and 10 dry. NO, because a table of 5 we all heard me say BBQ. And if I ordered BBQ from the beginning why would I go order hot when I already have mild? Please do not blame your incompetence on me. She obviously wasn't busy so I'm not sure how she got such a simple order wrong. The food was brought to us by the busboys and not by her. In the whole time that we were there, she only checked in with us once. I saw the other waitress working, she was more attentive with her patrons. We had to ask the other waitress for our bill since we were looking to leave. We then had to ask the busboy to flag our waitress down so she could charge our card, that's how nonexistent she was. Why bother being a waitress if you're not going to wait your assigned tables? Go find a new profession please, you're ruining the reputation of this establishment as well as patrons dining experience with your terrible attitude/service. If possible I would've given our tip to the other waitress, she did more for us than Cara did. Another reason to miss 1849, aside from the terrible service delivered... The wings were just eh. We were looking for a place in the area for sandwiches and such. Decided to come in to phoebe's solely for the food (no drinking after a half marathon ). The menu is very simple, small enough to not be overwhelming but still leave us thinking if we should have ordered our other option the rest of the day. Ordered the Avocado Chicken and the French Toast, both came out nicely dressed and not just tossed onto a plate. With the sandwich I got a huge portion of fries. Definitely satisfied with my meal for the money. Will be returning to try the Mac and Cheese! read more

Who goes to an Irish Pub on Cinco de Mayo? This guy! Ok, yes, admittedly this was an unorthodox choice for a Mexican Independence Day celebration, but it was also a friend's birthday and this is the venue he chose. Probably wise to avoid the Mexican theme if your b-day is on 5/5. This is a standard irish pub. It's pretty large, drinks are cheap, plenty of pub grub to choose from - we tried some calamari and potato skins. Fine. When I've walked by on weekend nights they seem crowded, but on this Monday night, they were not. They have a full bar, but give you funny looks if you order anything other than beer or whiskey. I could not let Cinco de Mayo go by without at least one margarita, so I got one against my better judgment. I should have listened to myself. read more

Seriously? The policy of not giving customers their change is wrong and also ILLEGAL. I asked to speak to the manager about this and he just stated it was the policy of the restaurant to round up. For example; the lunch bill total was $34.60 and was rounded to $35 and I did not get the .40 cents in change. Let's do some math: If the restaurant serves 150 customers per day @.40 cents (stolen from the customer) that is $60 per day, $1800 per month and $22,600 per year. What would Uncle Sam say about that? I am not cheap by any means, but I do like my coinage to do whatever the fuck I want with. I love this place, especially when they have 10 cent per wing night with a purchase of a pitcher of beer. The most amazing thing I can do in this place is eating around 50 wings by myself. It's a good place to talk and hang out with friends you haven't seen for a long time. However, don't expect to be a quiet place. Yes, it's bar and restaurant. The bartender, right off the bat, used homophobic slurs to describe me and my friends when I entered. If that wasn't enough, the manager of the bar backed the bartender up completely and actually participated in the name calling. The location and menu are nice but I can't with any good conscience recommend that people come to this bar. When I confronted the bartender about his obvious lack of discretion I was bullied into leaving and asked if I wanted to "fight". I said I did not want to fight and was not willing to engage in any such activity. When I questioned whether they thought it was appropriate to threaten their guests, the bartender actually pushed me. Before we begin, let us note that this review is only for the Phebe's nightlife scene. I don't think I should even use the term nightlife. But let's get on with it! Basically, I never went to NYU but then I went to Phebe's and saved 40k+ in the process. I actually have good friends from NYU so don't think I'm a hater, but yeah I just felt out of place here as I felt like everybody was a freshman and I am no longer that fresh. Also, during the wintertimes the whole line-with-velvet-rope thing is so incredibly lame. Doubly so considering it's Phebe's, a wholly unexciting venue. Basically my modus operandi here on a late weekend evening is to burrow in and hang a right into the less crowded smaller back room as soon as humanly possible. I will sit and drink a beer and let my friends do their thing while I try to zone out the latest Soulja Boy that is being forced upon me. I only start paying attention when my friend gets kicked out. Then I wonder how she got so lucky and I start to think that maybe I should do whatever she did because that's remotely exciting. But then I just leave, without the dramatics, slipping into the night silently, leaving behind a sea of hormones, perfumes, deodorants and unfulfilled desires, casting a sad eye at the poor saps waiting in line to get in. This is kind of a dual review, since Phebe's doubles as a restaurant and as a bar/club. So, first, a review of the latter: it's all right. I used to really like Phebe's until it became literally overrun with i-banking douchebags and the girls who love them, though it's not as extreme as, say, the Big Easy. The drink prices are decent, and the mixed drinks are even relatively strong; you can pick up drinks at the long bar in the main room or at the smaller bar in the back room. The music is pretty much what you could expect in a stripey bar: recent hip-hop mixed with Jersey shore anthems (yeah, the DJ isn't particularly good). There's a lot of room for dancing, but not too many people actually dance. They keep the TVs on during the night, so if you get really bored, you can hole yourself up in a corner and watch a game. Although, if you come on a quieter night or earlier on a busy night, it can be really nice to snag the Florida-room-like front portion with a group of friends and drink yourselves silly while watching people risk their lives trying to cross Bowery. As for the restaurant, I have three words for you: TEN. CENT. WINGS. That's right...oh, wait. They've gone up to 25 cents. No matter! Because every Monday and Wednesday from 8 p.m. until midnight, if you buy a pitcher of beer, you get as many wings as you want at 25 CENTS EACH. That means you can pretty much feed yourself a huge dinner on about $5 for wings and beer (and who doesn't love that combination?). And man are the wings good: crispy, slathered with sauce, and really meaty. Excellent. Bathroom Grade: 4.5/10. I really don't know why I have to keep asking this, but why do bars build bathrooms at the bottom of stairs? And for that matter, why more red walls? Small stalls? TINY MIRRORS? I don't get it. I came here on a Friday night after work and met up with a group of 15+ people to get my friend drunk for his birthday, the place is like the name states... a tavern! and what does a tavern make you think of? Beer!!! Yes, beer and gun slinging! But there was no gun slinging in NY thanks to Giuliani, so we just opted for the wide selection of beers, hard liquor, and the extensive bar food menu. The place has two rooms, stools and small tables and its actually quite large, I ordered the sliders/mini burgers (4 of them in one plate) and they quickly got stolen by friends, tasty tasty!!! Ok so all in all we had a blast, got my buddy wasted, their staff was the friendliest, attentive, the location had more than ample room, and the prices were VERY cheap compared to other places. read more

First I will start with the positives, the food was GREAT, it came out on time, & the pricing is logical. The negatives, there was a bouncer in the front at 3pm in the afternoon asking me for an ID before I even get in, fine, but he was rude and aggressive about it. I came here to eat not to drink. I sit down with my friend we order nacho appetizers and pause to continue checking the menu and our waiter quickly says while rolling her eyes thats all ur going to order? I've only been at night on the weekends, so can't speak on the food or anything else. But this place really is the pits and I curse myself and the friend that drags me here every time we arrive. Why? Well, first off, on my most recent visit, I was appalled by the fresh-out-of-college crowd and their inability to handle their drinks. It reminded me of a preschool where little children are still learning their boundaries. Guys and girls were drunkenly bumping into me from left and right (without even the hint of acknowledgment, much less an apology), and couples were getting frisky very openly. The latter would've been fine, except for that these people too would have no sense of boundaries and personal space, and when some chick is leaning on you for support as she takes another guys tongue down her throat, then there's a problem. Then there's the issue with how ridiculously lacking in diversity this place is. It's like a whiteboy frat party, complete with the outdated hip-hop music (since these kids are always ten years late in realizing what's cool in hip-hop). Coming here is like a trip to a college in rural Ohio. This is NYC, people. Embrace the different cultures! This insularity has no place in the city. Oh, and then there was the nagging suspicion that the $12 Patron shots I paid for were entirely watered down, if not another brand of tequila entirely. I know my tequila, and the shots tasted nothing like they should have. Oh, and lest I forget, there was a line to get into place! Despite the fact that the backroom was devoid of people. When I heard about Phebe's, the biggest draw for me was the $0.10 Buffalo wings on Monday and Wednesday nights (8pm to midnight)! You have to order a pitcher first. Beer and buffalo wings are such a great combination! They have a great selection of beers whether it's from the tap or bottled. The buffalo wings are so good! There is a good amount of sauce on each wing. Definitely worth the $0.10! Go with friends and enjoy the goodness! Every time I've been here at night, it is always crowded. It's such a popular place! Plus they have some pretty great music and plenty of tvs to watch sports if you don't feel like chatting. I also came here for brunch once. I had my favorite, the blueberry pancakes! There are a good number of blueberries in each pancake. Yes they are IN the pancake as opposed to just sitting on top. The pancakes were fluffy and filled with blueberry goodness! With each brunch order, it comes with a drink (Mimosa, Bloody Mary, beer, coffee, tea or juice). I tried the mimosa which was very well made and definitely gave me the brunch feeling especially since the place is a tavern . I tried my friends' "I Did It My Way" Omelets and they are delicious too! The omelets were cooked just right. You can have your choice of two items in the omelet. So choose wisely! I've only been here for the wings special on Mon and Wed - starts at 8pm and fills up pretty quickly by 830pm Food: Up to 30 wings for 10c each with each pitcher purchased. I like to order the wings dry with sauce on the side so that the wings stay crispy (personal preference) Sauce choices: Mild, Medium, Hot, BBQ The hot sauce is not hot at all, it tastes like buffalo sauce diluted with tomato soup. We've successfully ordered "extra super spicy sauce" (which in our opinion was just right) a few times but after that they refused to make anymore telling us that the kitchen doesn't have the resources. The Mild sauce is much more tangy than the Hot and actually has a much better flavor profile Wings come with celery sticks, ranch, and bleu cheese sauces as well They have a large selection on beer on tap, Approx 20, off the top of my head: Abita, Magic Hat #9, Killians Irish Red, Stella Artois, Service: Ive gotten yelled at a few times by the grumpy bus boy for standing in the "wrong area" Other than that, all the staff are quite friendly Ambiance: Clean, Dark, Not too Rowdy, They have several TVs and usually have football on. read more

The food is excellent, drinks are amazing and most of all the staff has much patience and portrays excellent service to our large group of 34. We will continue coming back. We came here last year to watch the Yankee/Tiger ALCS. You wouldn't know that this pub was in NYC because it was such an anti-Yankee crowd, it was lovely. The waitress was very friendly, who checked on us every couple of minutes. Plus she was cute, and that always goes a long way. Granted, you're not gonna come here for the food. If you want good food, go down the block to the Mermaid Inn or whatever. If you just wanna have a good time, down a few drinks, and basically just get wasted, then this is the place to come to. read more

Ive found that the bouncers here are some of the most rude aggressive security staff in New York City... There are more rules in this bar alone than there were in kindergarten through 12th grade. God forbid if you are standing in the wrong spot, a bouncer will come and forcibly remove you from the premises. One of my favorite haunts as an underage drinker years back, Phebe's looks the same now as it did then. A spacious place to get tanked. It gets a star for neglecting to proof me back then. I will be forever grateful. Sadly, I'm a grownup now. We came for brunch since Jones was packed. No wait at all - Phebe's was completely empty. They offer a free mimosa or bloody mary with their brunch menu, but we opted for coffee instead. NO?? To free BOOZE? Yep, caffeine won out - I am as crushed as you are. Service was mighty slow, in view of the fact that we were nearly the only ones there. The drinks came fast, but it took almost an hour for the food. Brunch itself was decent, nothing gross, nor was anything particularly tasty. The best part: tater tots came with a sandwich. Tater tots! Phebe's, my younger self misses you. My partner and I have gone to Phebe's several times and had the same front door man as well as the same wait staff and I'm always consistently unimpressed with the staff and service. Additionally, they have specials on their menus advertised that are actually not valid or available. The hostess we had tonight was downright rude. I was coming in for a late night dinner and asked if I could sit and order while I waited for the other member of my party. (There were several empty tables) She made me wait until my party arrived even though I had our order ready and could have turned the table around faster. I've been to Phebe's several times and all of them were just average. Their food is ok (edible), the servers are friendly but inattentive at times, and the drinks are good, but why was my Coke $3? The good side to it is that the place is pretty spacious and the bartenders are really nice. Ceiling to floor windows would be great for people watching although the only people I wanted to watch were the cool ones in my company. Best time to go is happy hour, nothing beats half price drinks and appetizers...but it depends on the appetizers...... The sliders aren't overly greasy and you really can taste the beef. I love pickles and I'm glad they put a pickle in each slider that covers the whole patty. Not too impressed with the calamari, no tentacles, essentially eating deep fried squid rings. There's no snap when you bite into them, almost a little chewy. Wings, nothing particularly spectacular about them, however, the bbq sauce surprised me as it was not overly salty or sweet or even smokey, it had good balance. Dipping sliders into the bbq sauce is a great idea. Artichoke dip a little too cheesy and salty. Could use a little cream to smooth it out It was ok, maybe if I had more drinks..... read more

My friend told me about this place that she frequents all the time. She works on the upper west side so I imagined i'd have to make my way cross/uptown. To my surprise when I searched the place, it was the next block from my building. Went in with a bunch of friend's Phebe's has a great location on the corner and an attractive exterior. The minute I walk in, as I'm being ID'd I see the England vs. Germany friendly on the T.V.; so immediately this place was off to a great start. I walk in to a very nice dining/bar area, big and open. We are led to another room towards the back which is another big room, but the abundance of tables and chairs make it seem smaller. Went for 10 cent wings, which we thought started at 7 but in the summer it's at 8. That was fine because it was still happy hour, 1/2 price pints and appetizers. The beer selection was descent, all the usual suspects, I wasn't tol of anything spectacular. (I usually end up drinking Guiness of Brooklyn Lager all the time any way). The service was good, even as the place seemed to be close to breaching the fire code, the service was still attentive and prompt. The beer kept coming and as we realized we stuffed ourselves with appetizers and ordered wayyy to many wings, we wrapped them up and decided to give them to a homeless guy on Astor. (Which i'm convinced wasn't a homeless guy but some dude just eating his dinner after a day's work). We had the quesadillas; which were big and meaty, the nachos; which were of a grand proportion and topped like an ice cream sunday, as well as the the potato skins, which were rather excellent, lots of potato and plenty of cheese and bacon. As for the wings, they get an A. For the price, it's hard to beat (10 cents!, nothing's that cheap these days, they don't even have a shift key on the keyboard for it!); they were big and meaty. We ordered the hot, and however they didn't have the spiciness that HOT usually denotes, the sauce was tasty and kind of sweet. This is a great place to go with alot of people after work, or late at night. The only thing better than the food were the waitresses. The 1/2 price appetizers have a good selection and the beer makes this place a great place to come for happy hour. We really enjoyed this restaurant -- the manager was kind enough to allow my family (all adults) to sit at a table in the bar although we were just having drinks (the tables were empty and my father-in-law needs a chair rather than a bar stool.) We had enjoyed our birthday luncheon there so much we decided to come back later for drinks. Good food (late review so I can't remember what we had) and very kind servers. Not bad, though I expected a little better from such an established East Village pub. Service was good and it was easy to get a table, late night on a Wednesday. I tried the buffalo chicken sliders, which were really average. The stuff-to-bread ratio was disappointing as the sliders were all bread and little chicken. The experience was pretty forgettable and I was disappointed because Phebe's had always been high on my to-try list. We ended up at Phebe's for a Friday happy hour and were pleasantly surprised by the chill atmosphere and the affordable food and drinks. There was a decent crowd, but the place wasn't so packed that you couldn't move. The happy hour specials were certainly exceptional and consist of 1/2 price beer and appetizers from 4-8pm - what a bargain! We both went for the house beer, Phebe's Ale, which was thoroughly enjoyable. I typically opt for Blue Moon and I felt like the Phebe's brew was a better, but comparable alternative. Beer purchased during happy hour only set us back $4 each! And, for dinner, we decided to split the nachos appetizer and the nachos were undeniably more than enough for 2 people and better than most bar nachos I've sampled in the city! We ordered an expensive pitcher of blue moon and sat in uncomfortable stools near the restroom. I've been here a few times for their happy hour. I think they have a great happy hour selection & the food is good. I've tried their wings, spinach dip, nachos, quesadillas - all have been decent. Their selection of draft beers is decent. I was surprised how busy (and how quickly) it got on a Wednesday night when they do their wing special. The inside is very plain. It really just seems like a good place for you to stop by after work, wind down with some friends and then head home. Service has always been good. This has been a great hang out place for my friends and I. Whenever we needed some cheap decent food while some of us chatted and some of us cheered for a sports team; this place has it all. They offer discounted appetizers on certain days which makes the food much more worth it! The calamari, sweet potato fries, spinach dip, and nachos are awesome. They are huge and we always finish eating feeling satisfied. And don't forget their Mon and Wed pitcher special! With a pitcher of beer, you get to order 10 cent wings! Yum yum yum!
