Great first experience at Phil's! The front room was full for reservations, but the back room where the bar is was open or the front patio was open. We decided to sit at the bar top in the back. The front room seemed quieter and a little more upscale. The back room was a little louder because of the music playing and it is where the bartenders are working. There is also a TV above the bar to watch sports, which was perfect so we could watch the baseball game. The patio out front was also an option, but it felt like it could be noisy because it is on Thousand Oaks Blvd. We were greeted and sat by Phil, the owner, who welcomed us and was very friendly. The bartenders who were working were also friendly and provided great service. We decided to try two of the whiskey cocktails. The Swayer and the DLBF. They were both similar to Old Fashions and both were excellent. For food, we tried the crispy brussel sprouts appetizer, the Bernard burger, and the pappardelle and sausage. The crispy brussel sprouts were crispy without being overcooked. We liked flavor with the Parmesan cheese and would have liked them even more if they had more balsamic on them. The Bernard burger was huge. Definitely a entree that can be split between two people. The burger was juicy and flavorful. The pappardelle and sausage dish was also a huge serving. This dish was not as flavorful as we expected. The hot Italian sausage was not spicy and had good flavor. We liked the burger most out of the items we ordered and would get the burger again. Last night we went in at about 7:30 and parked in the back. Seems there's always a few of the bar crowd huddled around the back door catching a smoke. We passed thru the lively bar to the dining room and were seated at a nice table against the South wall. Two other tables were occupied. There's a ginormous tv on the West wall, playing baseball. Crooner music played over the sound system. In an adequate time interval the personable server took our order and delivered our beverages: two glasses of white wine and some water. We ordered a wedge salad to share. He ordered the grilled combo and I ordered the stroganoff. The salad, even when split between the two of us, was big. That, and a bowl of soup could have easily been a meal. It was very compact and very cold, crispy iceberg lettuce with a smattering of bacon bits, fried onions, a few blue cheese crumbles, and a smidgen of blue cheese dressing. I asked for more dressing, but I enjoyed the salad a lot. I wasn't impressed with the entrees, though. My fettuccine noodles were stuck together in twos, and my beef was kind of grey, as if steared in a crowded pan. That is, no caramelization. The beef texture was ok but not particularly tender. I think the cut was a sirloin or round steak. I had to hunt to find any mushrooms. The sauce was more like juice from the bottom of the pan, not very robust and rather thin. The dollop of sour cream on the top improved it. Saved it, in fact. The grilled combo was well presented with a 6oz tenderloin steak atop some mashed potatoes and a few shrimp kabob style, speared into the steak. On the side were perfectly steamed carrots, broccoli, and zucchini. My husband is a member of the Clean Plate Club and he grew up eating canned veggies. His palate is not real discerning; he was happy with it. I thought his shrimp looked overcooked. I tasted the potatoes. They were savory, properly seasoned. I'm not sure what the sauce over the beef was, but it was very strong. It tasted like maybe a peppercorn sauce. He thought it was fine but I thought it overpowered an otherwise good cut of cow. We each ordered a glass of Matua Sauvignon Blanc. I know it might be gauche to order white wine with beef, but we do us. The total came to about $130 before tip. It was nice to go out and have somebody else clean up, but for that price I expect better quality. To leave the restaurant, we had to weave through happy bar patrons. There was a provocatively clad female operating a DJ board, which everybody seemed to enjoy. Passing through a cloud of tobacco smoke, we made our way out of the roomy parking lot without incident. Phil's has the best of both worlds, because the place offers two distinct features, the front of the house for dining in and the back for the sports and entertainment bar scene. I like that the hallway divides the two places and they have their own entrances so it makes for a cool spot. I'd like to try their happy hour and bar next time. This review is for the dine in resturant affair. Came in on a Friday girl's night out and it was packed. Thankfully, we had reservations and were seated right away. It was loud at first and I was wondering if we're going to hear our conversation, but sure enough once we were seated, we were in our own zone and it didn't impact us. The service, food, and drinks were fabulous. We ordered (2) roxie stars, (2) a lil something, 1 old fashion, and 1 glass of pinot noir - drinks were strong, tasty, and nice pours for what we got. Next, we ordered the brussel sprouts for our appetizer. It was breaded, which I didn't expect because I thought they were roasted, but we all loved it with the balsamic glaze. Then we ordered (3) entrees to share which were the brazino fish, parpadelle with sausage, and swordfish (special) for the evening. They were all a hit but my favorite was the caper sauce on the brazino fish on top of the angel hair pasta. Lastly, we got three desserts to share but we all had different winners. I recommend the apple cobbler with ice cream! We got the creme brulee and limoncello creme brulee which was good too. We got to meet Phil, who was very personable and Caroline, who made our time there very comfortable. The ambiance was perfect.... Friday evening after a long week, evening sun setting, Buble playlist playing the standards .... ahhhh... feeling relaxed and inspired. We had the Brussel sprouts (delicious), tuna tartare (substituted the chips with lettuce cups), the 1/2 chicken (outstanding), and the Cobb chicken salad (lemon zest for dressing was the perfect way to keep it light). I'v tried this place twice. Honestly, I'm so puzzled by the good reviews. The first time I had the stroganoff which was unrecognizable - gummy noodles swimming in a terrible sauce. Years later we want back to have a drink and an appetizer. I ordered the grilled cheese - I mean, grilled cheese, how can you mess that up? Horrible. Barely toasted bread on a grill. White, not toasted. I'd give it 2 stars for food, but the bartender was great. He was sorry about the disappointing sandwich so brought us some Brussels sprouts, which we appreciated. My boyfriend had the meatballs which were truly good. Such a hit and miss experience. I wouldn't go for food again. And no, I'm not a Karen, just honest. read more

Really wanted to like this place. The ambiance is really good. We decided to sit in the back "bar" area. Ordered a couple of appetizers...tuna tartare and Brussel Sprouts. Not much tuna or avocado on the plate...mostly filler. Same with the sprouts...a ton of filler. Steak and fries were ok. Very thin ribeye but it tasted ok (odd the menu says $49 but was charged $50.72). The chicken club sandwich (advertised at $21 but was charged $24.84) wasn't worth the price. Not enough chicken to cover the break....couple of bites had no chicken at all and was mostly bread and lettuce. Same goes with the prime rib sandwich (advertised at $26 and charged $26.84)...meat not evenly distributed across the bread (see photo), a lot of cheese and not much beef...both ends had not meat at all. Au jus was super salty. Service was troubling. Bartender only in that section and he was spread way too thin. Nice guy but when you are spending close to $200 for a meal for three that is not right. Ordered a beer when we sat down and was asked if I wanted another after I was done with the meal. We felt bad for the guy. In the end the place was super pricey and not worth the value considering the meal quality and a dual-hatted bartender/waiter. We didn't catch the advertised price and actual price difference until we got home. That should never happen. Lastly, they advertise...but, we're out of both Chopin and Tito's. read more

Also, pretty close to the table next to you so had to be mindful of our volume while enjoying our meal. Food was good, service was great, and the drinks were good. 3rd time in less than a week. It's that good! Combining the 2nd and 3rd visits in this addendum, a couple days ago (Wednesday) Zane was at the bar, welcoming me back. As was Paige, who called me by name! Impressive! Also met Z, who I had seen previously. Rushing around handling the tables in back. And Phil exists!! Yes!! There's an actual "Phil." The coolest guy, tall with spikey hair. And so genuinely nice. I felt like I was meeting a celebrity as I shook his hand in passing and we chatted for a moment as I learned the place had been open for just a couple years. As for my meal, I was boring and went, once again, with the Bombay Sapphire dirty martini with blue cheese olives. It was Happy Hour, and I asked if the wedge salad was a smaller portion. It was, and I chose that. The Brussels sprouts and the Tots were their regular size, though. Added those to the mix. Very creative work on the Sprouts! On a bed of chopped cabbage, with almonds, they had the thinnest, crispy batter ever. Not totally coated. Just a smattering. And it seemed as if the final touch was done in an air fryer. The sprouts were firm. Not soggy. The batter was crispy, and drizzling of (possibly) balsamic was very flavorful!! Wow! The tots were equally crispy! And they held that while I ate everything else. They did not get soggy, even towards the bottom of the cone they were in. Like the best breakfast tots from wherever you'd get them! I was absolutely stuffed with the 3 appetizers. Tonight (Friday) I was greeted by Rob and Zane, and Phil remembered me as I sat down at the bar. Again (I'm predictable) I started with the Bombay martini. Also had the Ahi Tartare! Delicious combo of ahi, celery, avocado, cilantro and other goodies. The triangular crisps they were served with were very different than usual, in the best way! These were not solid, hard chips. These were layered - like a phyllo dough would be, and they crackled apart when you bit into them. Wonderful texture, yet held the scooped ahi beautifully. During this time I had been watching Zane crank out several chocolate espresso martinis. Yep - no more predictability here. Had to have one. And they had a special shrimp cocktail tonight, so I had that as well. I might have found the winning combo of drinks. The new martini had wonderful chocolate shavings on top. I also watched as Zane started by pouring chocolate syrup into the glass and then artfully drawing legs up the sides. Phil was passing as Paige delivered my shrimp cocktail. He kindly pointed out the tails were still intact. I then took a moment to pull the 5 large prawns out to remove their tails, and then cut them into 2-3 sections each, placing the pile of shrimp back into the cilantro, tomato, onion, avocado broth so I could eat without further adjustment. Another winner!! When will I find something bad here???? Crazy good. Love the people; love the food; love the atmosphere. I'll return tomorrow!! read more

HH review only...I totally understand why Phil's is slammed during happy hour. Fairly hh priced items for both food and drinks, friendly bartenders, fun music, and lively atmosphere. When I say fair pricing, I mean down right cheap but let's keep it quiet! All the hh snacks pictured were good, with the sliders being my favorite. Drove by this place many times and today was the spontaneous choice going in. The staff were very friendly in welcoming, got there early and was able to get seated promptly. Ordered the bacon wrapped shrimp ( no photo), 4 large jumbo shrimps on bed of arugula, with sauce and chopped tomatoes. Pretty tasty sin of Leviticus. Mac and cheese, man that was a dream to eat! Boyfriend and I were thinking that we might cry after the last bite is gone. Totally would order this again! Even thought about getting another order for dessert. Burger had a blend of meat, seasoned and it was hella flavorful. Not a basic pub burger at all. Order again for sure. Cubano sandwich, my boyfriend said it was authentic, quickly devoured and would order again. We both had the boss salad, loved the almond slices and the dressing. Hoorah for Phil! Walked up to the establishment hosting a private holiday event but Phil reassured us plenty of space in the back bar area. We were quickly greeted and had a great waitress. For appetizer the crispy Brussel sprouts were great! Perfect bite and crispy! The fixings and dressings really elevated the whole dish. I found myself happy to go with a lighter item as it was a decent amount of food for an app. The mains we ordered the beef stroganoff and branzino. Waitress said it was the relative most popular and her personal favorite dishes. Easy to see why. These main dishes were lights out delicious! The fish was cooked perfectly and the lemon, capers was the right amount without being overpowering. The angel hair pasta underneath paired very well. The beef stroganoff had nice fluffy noodles with a savory sauce. This dish was made with obvious love and it's a large amount of food. Enough for two meals to take home. Phil's is a great little spot in Thousand Oaks. This place has a hometown bar/restaurant feel. I haven't dined in the sit-down restaurant area because I like the casualness of the bar area. There are a couple booths and tables in addition to bar seating. The food here at Phil's is really good. My go-to is the rotisserie chicken with mashed potatoes, gravy, and crispy spinach. This dish is cooked to order, so it takes about 20 minutes or so. It's well worth it. I look forward to trying other menu items at Phil's in the near future. read more

Phil's is a cozy restaurant in front, and a neighborhood bar in the back...ready for whatever fits your mood. I have found all staff to be friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. Even special requests were happily granted. The food we tried: Brussel Sprouts that are served on top of a bed of cabbage, onions, parsley, and slivered almonds sprinkled with Parmesan cheese and a tasty balsamic. It was delicious and a such a great complimentary combination of ingredients. The Schnitzel "Family Favorite" Salad was mostly very good as the lettuce, tomato and buffalo mozzarella were cold and very fresh. And the homemade balsamic drizzle was perfection. My issue was with the crispy chicken; It looked incredible and the chicken itself was cooked perfectly with a gorgeous crispy crust, but it fell short in taste...just bland with no seasoning. The onion rings were tasty and served in a cone shaped holder. I will definitely order these again. The Cubano was good but the ratios of ham to pork were a little off. It needed more ham and less pork. It actually seemed more on the gourmet side than the typical simple Cuban sandwich from our hometown in South Florida. It's not bad, but if you were raised on Cuban sandwiches just know it's not the same thing. May order again as although it wasn't what was expected, it was still a good solid sandwich. We were going to a comedy show at the TO performance arts center. Phil's was close and the menu looked good on line and they have a full bar. Upon arrival we opted for bar seating. Maybe 5-6 tables and a small bar.it was happy hour and lucky for us we grabbed the last open table. There was only 1 server for the bar, but this woman was on top of her game. She was attentive to everyone in the bar. My son had the Moscow Mule, a margarita for me and my wife opted for a gin drink. The menu has lots of options but it's not so big, so it doesn't become overwhelming. Meatball sandwich was my choice, the meatballs were really good, The meatballs were soft and moist, with lots of fresh herbs. The sauce was flavorful, the cheese was melted perfectly and the roll was toasted. That toasted bread held up well and the sandwich never became soggy. My son ordered the burger, he stated it was better than most burgers he had. He was happy My wife had the salmon. The salmon was served on a bed of noodles with a verity of vegetables. The noodles has a peanut sauce on them and it went so well with the salmon. The vegetables were cooked but they still had a slight crunch to them. My wife thought the salmon could have used another minute or two of cook time. I thought the salmon was slightly over done, for me. I guess we all have different preferences but the salmon was still great. I would absolutely come back and try more dishes from you. Overall a great experience read more

My steak was over cooked and over priced and second dish was also blah (pasta dish).
