Great sandwich and burger. I got a turkey hoagie the first time. Which was delicious, I love the thin onions on my hoagie. The second time I got a burger with extra toppings! Really good burger, but I highly recommend you eat the burger there instead of taking it home because it will get soggy. It's right next to the grocery outlet so after you shop you can go eat there. Which is what I do, and is a really good choice after grocery shopping. read more

It's a a cool little restaurant tucked in a strip mall with a bunch of Philadelphia stuff on the walls. The service was good. I was able he only one in there so I was taken care of quickly. The food is pretty good it's just small for the price. I ordered the works and it was $17 out the door for a sandwich that I was still hungry after eating. For $17 you could get a giant sandwich at Jersey mikes. But I get it Philly cheesesteaks are usually more expensive. I don't mind paying a little extra for good food so I'd probably try it again. read more

Saw this place in passing several weeks ago. We happened to be passing at the lunch hour and decided to check it out. We ordered from Donald (I think he may have been the chef/cook) and he was friendly and answered a question about the cheesesteak sandwich so I ordered 'the cheesesteak'. That's what I got. Thinly sliced very tender steak with some white cheese melted beyond recognition on a perfect bun. Where's the veggies? We had anticipated bell peppers and onions. NOT! I'm guessing that is a different sandwich. Anyway, I had tipped Donald a dollar (my new norm is $0 tip) because he was nice and engaging; however once seated, our food was brought out and didn't have the Frings I also ordered from Donald. Looking at the receipt I noticed he didn't charge me for the Frings and also gave me 10% discount. I also notice a 4% surcharge was added to the bill. When our food was brought out, I told the server about the Frings and she went to have them prepared because there was now a line almost out the door. The place was super busy for a Sunday lunch. She brought the Frings out just as we were leaving. I offered to pay for them and they declined at first but accepted when I asked again and to also bring a to-go container for the Frings since we were already finished with our sandwich. I stopped by here because this place was recommended to me by one of my good friends. I was looking for more sandwich places to try around San Marcos & I just happen to be in the area running errands. I came in & the place was quiet, clean & spacious. The customer service was really nice, the lady who took my order was patient since I was new. The menu is pretty extensive and they had a lot of options of philly cheesesteaks plus cold deli sandwiches too which they consider a "Philly Hoagie". I went with the Mushroom Cheese Steak with the Cheez-Wiz and I got my husband the Italian Philly Hoagie with provolone cheese. We also got a side of Frings since my husband was feeling like fries & I'm an onion ring kind of gal. We took it to-go since we weren't far from home, and I was surprised to see our food didn't get cold at all. Packaged really well & just all around delicious flavors. The Cheez-Wiz actually matched the philly cheese steak really well because it was pretty much a nacho cheese marinated with the steak, it was flavorful. My husband's sandwich was also very good because we got two different flavor types! I think those two hot/cold sandwiches would be my top. The onion rings were my favorite side! Perfectly battered & crispy, and the fries were a shoestring type which were thin but also very crunchy. Their type of ranch there was delicious & I was happy to get that as the sauce for the sides. Been on my list for a while. Atmosphere was pretty austere with all of the expected Philly sports artifacts on the wall. Good to see that bottled craft beer was available. Figured I'd start with a basic cheesesteak with Cheese Whiz instead of the white American. I believe that's how Pat's and/or Geno's does it, but I'm not sure which? At $14+ with tax, it wasn't cheap, but the quality is definitely up there. Not a single bite of gristle. Onions were perfectly sautéed yet still sweet. I'm glad I tried the Whiz once, but it's too salty. Back to American cheese from now on. The Amoroso roll was fresh, but almost "too soft" (I know, I'm a PITA!) Next time I'll see if they can grill or toast it and add lettuce and tomato. Fortunately, they have a name for this bastardization that I recall from my youth on the Jersey Shore- the Cheesesteak Hoagie ($13.75) And add some hot peppers please. This is the best Philly Cheesesteaks in North County and, for me, its not even close. It's in a non-descript strip mall and the interior is clean but nothing to write home about but the food is jus so great. They have a number of other menu items, including: hoagies, fries, onion rings, canned sodas and bottled beer, but the go to is the Philly Cheesesteak. There are a number of options but we got Pepper Cheeseteak 3's. These come with American cheese, peppers (sweet & hot peppers) ,grilled onions and 6 oz of steak. Growing up in Southeast PA and knowing what a real Philly cheese steak is I was curious to try this place for a while now. The bun is spot on, the taste not too far off but not exactly a Philly. The bun was 1.5x the meat, onions, mushrooms, and sauce. A really Philly is packed with the goods and weighs a good pound (dense). This was more like the steak was ground in a food processor w the sauce and then mixed in was small thin onion and shrooms pieces. Taste wasn't too bad but the consistency was way off for what a Philly should be. Probably won't go back for this reason and the price was pretty steep. But honestly, just about every place is these days. Maybe I will try one more time and a different menu item. They DID have Dr. Pepper on tap though!!! I give Philly Franks 3.25 stars or a high C+ grade (79/100). read more

I never do this. I never leave yelp reviews. Im always somewhat satisfied with food i get. But this? It's the first time ive been disappointed with local food in an incredibly long time. The sandwich was decent. The fact of the matter is it's just insanely overpriced. I ordered just a cheesesteak, no onions. It came out to around $15. I was ok with paying it because i thought it'd be a big ole sandwich that i could even have enough for dinner. It was the tiniest Philly cheesesteak I've ever had. I hate i didn't take a picture, but i was rushing back to work for lunch. It was about the size of one of those sparkling waters in the long thin bottles. It was pitiful. The staff seems really nice and i have 0 ill will toward them. It even felt like a nice place to sit down for lunch. There were a bunch of blue collar guys in there just chatting it up. It was cool place, but I'm never going back. For $15 you can go to Jersey Mikes and get a Giant Chipotle Sandwich and it'll be phenomenal and filling or if you're in the area, just go right next door to the Chinese restaurant and you can get a big plate with a drink for the same price. read more

My husband and I tried this for the first time today and the consensus is... we will be returning next week. When I saw the place was a mom and pop, operating in a little hole in the wall with plenty of ample customers coming in and out, I knew I was in for a good surprise. And--Oh. My. Gawd. The closest you can get here to an authentic philly outside of PA. Just a warning: Don't substitute anything. If you're considering it, smack yourself and tell yourself no. Don't do it. Don't! My husband did and regretted it after trying mine. We ordered two phillies (one with hot peppers and one with a mix + sub provolone) to go. We weren't able to eat them for about 20 minutes, but the wrapping held nicely and everything was labeled. The amount of meat packed in is also very deceiving -- it will fill you up quickly. They were very flavorful and meat texture was good! I did expect the hoagie to be bigger for how much it cost but it was still good. We did take out so not much service going on. read more

TLDR: Easily the best cheesesteaks in the San Diego area. That sounds like a 'damning with faint praise' kind of thing, but it's really not. These come reasonably close to an authentic Philly, and they're absolutely delish. Frank's is smack dab in the middle of a decidedly meh-looking strip mall. The place is really a hole in the wall, which is fine for a cheesesteak place. :-) Service is reasonably fast and friendly, the bread's great - they use genuine Amoroso rolls! - and the cheese + steak is ooooh so good. Get the regular cheesesteak with mushrooms, you'll thank me for it! Definitely worth your time to visit. This place scores a 5 out of 5 on the 'CTJ Scale', as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. Would be OK passing away after finishing a plate here. 4 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Mary good. I don't know why I get so anxious when order. Beef! Wit! Whiz! They move so fast here, I would hate to slow down the line because I don't know how to order. The lines can be long and I don't want to be THAT ONE person holding it up. The cheesesteaks are really, really good. Ever since my son was diagnosed with an egg allergy, we don't come here as often as we would like. There are eggs in the bread. But my husband and I come during lunch while the kiddos are at school. This place is about to become a problem for me -- it was way too good. We stopped in at lunch time and got cheesestakes and "frings" (half fries half onion rings) to go. First of all, I love that they offer frings. They're really giving the people what they want with an option to get both fries and onion rings together for the same price. I got the mushroom cheesesteak, and I was happy from the first bite. Every element was good, but I especially love how thin the meat is, giving it a perfect texture. The onion rings were perfectly sweet and crunchy. The fries were mediocre, but that was fine because even mediocre fries are delicious. My friend ate her hot pepper cheesesteak in one impressive go and had no regrets. It took a bit for our food to be ready, but the staff was upfront about it and very kind and we had no problem with waiting.
