So when I saw there was a place fairly close obviously I saved it in my yelp collection & vowed to swing by. "Philly Phlava!? Come on now, sounds delish right? I probably shouldn't have wasted my gas to be honest. It was very dry & my cheese was congealed after a few bites & my bread was kinda tough. The mustard packets were old I'm guessing? When I went to put it on my sandwich it was just one big glob of off color yellow. I didn't finish it of course. My kid got the chicken tenders. Ok I guess. You'll find them in the shopping center at the intersection of Dale Mabry and Fletcher Avenue, around the corner and next door to what used to be Five Guys burgers (now Twinz City Hotdogs). Inside the small restaurant you'll see all of the trappings of Philadelphia memorabilia, including a wall of fame for the Philly sports teams. You place your order at the counter, and then wander around looking at the signs for Herr's potato chips, Amoroso rolls, Hank's Sodas, YooHoo, and TastyKakes pastries. The menu has the standard cheesesteaks, hoagies, burgers, dogs, wraps, sandwiches, grilled chicken sandwiches, salads, and wings, along with breakfast sandwiches, omelets, breakfast burritos, and platters. I ordered a traditional cheesesteak with Cheez Whiz, mushrooms, grilled onions, and peppers. I added a side of BayFries which was French fries kicked up with Old Bay spices and seasonings. My family and I have been getting take out twice a week to support small businesses during this Corona Virus pandemic. We mostly pick up for dinner but for Philly Phlava, it was a lunch run. The boys ordered the Philly Cheese steaks and since I am not eating beef or pork currently.. I ordered the chicken parm sandwich. I was not expecting it to be that good since it wasn't from an Italian restaurant but I was proven wrong! This sandwich was really good! The chicken wasn't greasy and had great flavor. The sauce was perfection and the bread.. oh my gosh.. a nice crust on the outside oh so tasty! We also ordered fries to share. They were your normal, run of the mill fries. Cool authentic philly place. My wife actually said she felt guilty as a Steelers fan eating here which made us both laugh. The fries were crispy and hot and the cheese steak was just what I wanted. A flakey hogue type roll with chopped steak and a variety of toppings and cheeses to choose from. I went with the wiz, which is the right way of course, and it was delicious. I will be back to try some other combinations and maybe even the Pennsylvania chips that they must special order in. If only they had Middleswarth chips. The place has been here a while. Haven't really given it a try until now. I went to school in northern Delaware and my wife's family has lived in that area ever since, so I'm accustomed to going over the line into PA and finding some great Philly cheesesteaks. It's what you eat at night when the student cafeterias closed down on campus. The place was busy with take out orders. I ordered a Philly cheesesteak with hot peppers. It was ready pretty quickly. The meat was coated with the hot peppers which was good. Could use a little more cheese. But all in all, not bad. Not the best I've had this year (was in the Philly area back in March,,,ahh, heaven). Stopped by for lunch today and ordered up a philly cheese steak with their mac n cheese bites. The Philly Cheese steak itself has several options as far as topping go and even after I messed up ordering my own they were able to correct it without hassle. Great quality steak here, less greasy than any I've had in on a philly. The bread itself was very good, solid and durable without being uncomfortable to eat.They also actually put the cheese on the bread first at the bottom to ensure hot melty cheese. . All n all this was a cheesesteak that was worth the trip. The mac n cheese bites were out of this world! The restaurant is very small and their menu is very cluttered. First timers will have trouble reading the menu and possibly ordering or finding a place to sit thanks to the tiny shop so make sure to go at a more random time verses hitting the lunch rush. The staff were friendly and helpful and they do have some more interesting fountain drinks choice like orange cream, and birch beer. If your a big philly cheesteak fan I recommend hitting this place but like I said avoid it during lunch or dinner rushes and you'll be in good shape. read more

This place used to be GREAT. When I first moved to Florida, this was my "go to" location for cheesesteaks. But then 2 things happened. 1. I discovered Delcos in Dunedin which is WAY better. 2. This place went WAY downhill. The people who work there are no longer trained how to actually chop and cook a steak...plus the place is always absolutely filthy which freaks me out a bit. If you are looking for an edible cheesesteak that is above average by Florida standards then this will work. But if you are looking for an awesome place that's actually like being in Philly...well you have to go back to about 2010 at Philly Phlava...it was once that good, but not anymore. read more

We finally got around to this place! Of course we had to get a steak. And it was good, just like I expected. While I'm not sure it's Any closer than Delco in Dunedin for us. It, it is just as good. A plus is they take credit. The bread is good and the price about the same. There are a few tables inside and a couple outside. We got ours to go so I'll have to try it hot off the grill next time. ok so overall it wasnt bad , just a few things for me that made it not great. we ordered 2 cheese steaks with wiz and fried onions and fries and a soda. they have a cool craft soda fountain but since its in the back of the shop , we didnt see it before we ordered and there wasnt something really jumping out to tell us. perhaps there was but we didnt see so we just got bottles of coke . I would say the cheese steak wasnt great although it could have been. the bread was awesome but the meat was not quality(super thin and bland) and the cheese wiz seemed like a value brand? the fries were better than avg quality HOWEVER (AND HERE IS THE HUGE DEAL BREAKER) they serve VALUE BRAND KETCHUP. Im all for restaurants making money but u cant tell me there is astronomical savings in buying "Frenchs" ketchup over Heinz! it was so bland and bitter it tastes like vinegar and toothpaste combined pretty much ruining the meal. Look in your house are you eating this garbage ketchup? obvs not! So in closing i think this place could be a 10 but hurts themselves by trying to shave off a few pennies using brand X. I went in yesterday and ordered a bacon cheeseburger. When I first walked in I wasn't greeted best by the girl working the cash register. She had an attitude when asking me what kind of cheese I wanted. I wasn't aware that cheddar wasn't on the menu and when I asked she told me the cheeses they had very rudely. She didn't try to up sell me on getting fries nor a beverage. I waited longer than I should have for a burger. They were about to give me a plane bacon cheeseburger without any sauce or toppings until one of the workers asked if I was having a burger plane. The burger was by far the worst burger I ever had it was over seasoned and very messy. I will not be coming back to this restaurant ever again. I also saw one of the workers scratch his head with gloves and continue to prepare food. The inside of this place may be clean but the workers do not know proper food safety. Take your time money and business elsewhere because there most certainly no "Phlava" here. read more

I've eaten at a few Philly Phlava locations, and as someone who was born and raised just outside of the city of brotherly bruises... their shops always remind me of that classic Clint Eastwood movie 'The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly". The good? They make their cheesesteaks with Amoroso rolls, with all the right options FOR the cheesesteaks, and you can get Pennsylvania Dutch Birch Beer at the Fletcher & Dale Mabry location. All of that is excellent. The bad? For the prices they charge, you always feel a little scrimped on the actual amount of meat you get in each sandwich. Also, I've yet to visit a location in which the staff wasn't horribly distracted and / or abrasive to the point of being almost openly rude. Several times, I've overheard the cooks have to be explained by the other employees the step-by-step of making certain sandwiches. I was even told a story once by my best friend how in the Brandon location he went for a sandwich and was met by a brand new employee with no knowledge of how to cook who informed him it would be at least an hour before someone who could help him would arrive. The ugly? I know they're trying to go for the "Philly hole in the wall eatery" feel with all the sports posters and memorabilia tacked up everywhere... but overall, every location I've gone to feels less than clean. It's a bit cramped, the seating is uncomfortable, and you feel as though the best sort of cleaning the place ever gets is a wipe down of the tables and a mop on the floor with no attention to the gunk and such that always accumulates in the cracks. Which happens at any restaurant; but what sets a good eatery from a place that you take a risk at because the food is tasty is when you feel confident that things are polished and clean all around. read more

Back in St. Louis there was a chain called Penn Station that had really good cheese steaks. This is as good if not better. I have found a go to cheese steak place. 5.3 miles from my house :( they deliver within 5 miles of the store. Can't wait to try other sandwiches. I had birch beer from the fountain machine. I used to love philly phlavor but their customer service is awful. I've gotten delivery a few times and every single time they are more than an hour late delivering my food so it's cold and soggy by the time I get it. They've gotten my order wrong twice and only sent a replacement once. Right now I am currently waiting for my food to be delivered, over an hour late. It's 8:55pm and they close at 9pm, placed my order at 7:15pm. Ridiculous. Update: I've given them another chance and twice now they have delivered early and food was still hot and crispy. Ordered a steak sandwich, fries and 2 liter. They don't put the 2 liters in a fridge because they don't have one for the soda. The fries didn't have enough cheese sauce and the fries were fried in old oil and over cooked. The sandwich meat and cheese were stuck to the paper. I called the store and the manager kept telling me that he's worked there for over 7 years and never had that happen. I kept asking him what he plans to do to fix this and he kept saying how long he's worked there. I got so sick of this, so I HAD to drive up there and bring him the sandwich to see for himself. They made me another sandwich, but it was awful. No seasoning, dirty grill and their bread is not made fresh and tastes like it. And they use paper to wrap the sandwiches which the filling sticks to. The first time I had a REAL Philly cheesesteak was when I was stranded in Philadelphia airport due to inclement weather ALL incoming and outgoing flights were canceled. Let me tell you, that experience was definitely.....an experience I will never forget. But that philly cheesesteak was the silver lining and highlight of my journey. But back to my review on this lovely gem, this cheesesteak made me feel like I was stuck back at that airport (in a good way lol). First, the inside of this restaurant is small and cozy, love love love the hockey decor (since my hubby is a former pro hockey player) . The staff was friendly and welcoming and the food was fresh and hot, and the portion size is definitely more than enough! They serve the philly with cheese WHIZ! And those from philly or know about REAL philly cheesesteaks, you know its served with whiz on it. Cheesesteaks here are the bomb. They are very tasty, bread they use is good too. A++ French fries are made fresh for each order. Burgers are not the best, they have a nasty garlic type taste. I dont advise. Overall, the cleanliness of this place really lacks a great deal of attention. They have 4 tables and every one of them usually have crumbs. Floors and walls are dirty, bathrooms are filthy too. Thankfully, the kitchen seems sort of well maintained and clean. read more

Well most of their food is pretty good but the attitudes suck. If they forgot something don't expect it or don't expect your money back unless you pester them. The philly sliders were horrible. Not a slider at all more of a mozzarella stick shaped hot pocket. What a disappointment. We spend 60 a week there. No more this place is going down the tubes. We watched as the "should be delivered by" clock ran out on the website, after being 20 minutes after "should be" time, we called and were told "it hasn't even left", we called back around 3:20, concerned that we had now waited 2 hours, to get 2 sandwiches and an appetizers. We didn't even receive our food until 3:45. It was hot, thank goodness so that's why they're getting a half star. My fiance' is from Philadelphia and has been slowly acclimating to life here in Florida. We passed Philly Plava a few weeks ago and he was very excited at the possibility of being able to get a true philly cheese steak here in Tampa. We finally got a chance to go, and he was not disappointed! A lot of the reviews say that it's not the best philly cheesesteak they have, but I also think this is coming from someone who doesn't know how a proper cheesesteak is made in Philly. My fiance' was very pleased with his cheesesteak saying it was done "correctly". The amoroso rolls, the dietz & watson meat options, the Herr's chip options- all "correct" for the true philadelphia experience. They even went as far as to have sodas from the area- my fiance' was literally jumping up and down that they had Birch Beer. For the record, I thought it was gross, but it does add to the authenticness. Anyway, I had a grilled chicken sandwich with french fries and it was also very good- although, you don't come here for a grilled chicken sandwich. This second tampa location is in the same plaza where I work, and Ive stopped in for breakfast(surprised they had it) and lunch. The philly was quite good...I can be picky about the meat and I have no complaints with theirs. Honestly, my favorite thing about this place is their DELICIOUS 4$ breakfast platter. I get scrambled eggs, bacon, home fries and toast...the portions are huge, they make it fresh to-order, and the flavors are phenomenal. Might be odd to stop at a philly place for breakfast but I highly recommend it, and of course the phillies are always a good choice. read more
