I'm still on a quest to find the best cheesesteak in Los Angeles! I tried Philly's Best Cheesesteak in Downey, CA yesterday (7-17-26). I compared it to the Philly's Best Cheesesteak in Irvine, CA that I went to about a month ago. I find that the location in Irvine made a better sandwich. I got The Philly Philly at both locations, but the location in Irvine made it better. The sandwich in Irvine was less salty and their bread was better. The bun in Downey tasted a little more chewy and less flavorful! Rankings so far: 1. Philly's Best Cheesesteak (Irvine, CA) 2. South Philly Experience (Los Angeles, CA) 3. Philly's Best Cheesesteak (Downey, CA) I'll provide another update in 2-3 weeks! All 3 locations provide a good overall experience though. I was a little disappointed that one of the cheesesteaks in Downey leaked through the paper bag, which means at least one of the four steaks was not wrapped correctly. I didn't have that experience in Irvine, and I drove an hour back home with 3 steak sandwiches in my car. read more

The Downey location is disgustingly dirty!!! One of the workers, I wish I got his name was mopping the floor in kitchen area when I walked in with his gloves on! Then he took my order and I saw him not change his gloves and touched the meat and bread for the sandwich's we ordered!!! So I asked him politely can he please change his gloves, the kid looked pissed that I called him out for his nasty habit and left out peppers and cheese on our sandwich only meat and very little, I also ordered extra sweet peppers and paid for it too!!! A friend who works nearby brags and brags on this restaurant. She spoke so well about it yesterday that I decided to have lunch with her today. I feel totally bummed that I forgot the employee's name that took out order. I got it but couldn't do the review right away and lost it. Our visit was 8/8/25 around 2:00 if that helps. I appreciate the fact that he was so patient and accommodating. It was my first time there so my tastebuds didnt know what to expect. I tried the Philly's Best buy with chicken and their fries. I have to admit "love at first bite". The bread was toasty yet soft. The meat was fluffy but firm enough for the sandwich and the cheese wasn't overwhelming. With that the sandwich was satisfying but not too heavy and loaded down. The fries was fresh. The looked and taste like they were cut from potatoes and fried in fresh grease. Normally after eating a meal like that I feel sluggish and weighed down. Not with this one. Their sandwich was the best and I look forward to another visit. I also noticed that they provide the perfect snack for a sweet tooth. Snacks by tastykakes. I appreciate the fact that they have a self ordering kiosk. That perfect for long lines. I am in the Downey area often but I usually go to the Long Beach location that I live by. Today I decided to try the Downey location, and I ordered through their website to avoid getting my order messed up, big mistake. I ordered the simplest thing you can order, Classic with grilled onions, that's it. Order was placed at 10:46 am. They didn't add any grilled onions... and some might think this is harsh, but I'm never coming back. I can only imagine how bad they will mess up a bigger order. First impressions, etc. I'm hesitant to complain because I already bit into it. I'm writing this just in case this is a common occurrence and the owner is wondering why nobody comes back. As a South Philly resident for over 5 years in the past, I still find it hard to locate a decent cheese steak shop anywhere West of Philadelphia. Many years ago....Philly's Best came in as an OK....almost decent cheese steak shop. Sadly...the quality keeps declining. My first impression of this location, after dealing with finding parking and all, was that it smelled really, really funky inside. I don't know what it was, but after a few minutes, my wife had to go wait outside because she couldn't handle it anymore. The layout is similar to the other locations, menu is on the right wall with pictures, counter to the left, soda machines to the left of that, then the condiments and utensil counter, framed by the other wall that has pictures of Philly landmarks and maybe a few sports memorabilia items, and tables in the middle. Thankfully, the cashiers and staff aren't as rude as some of the staff at the South Philly restaurants, otherwise it could get ugly, lol. The staff is very friendly, so it's not as intimidating as the service given on the East coast. I would recommend to avoid the condiment station, as the peppers and such were pretty exposed and uncovered...and there were gnats/flies. This and the smell of the place is what drops the rating down. Foodwise, we ordered a single Wiz Wit - Steak with grilled onions and cheese wiz. While a lot of people balk at the idea of cheese wiz...it pairs perfectly with the steak and grilled onions, try a bite! I would say I'd come back...or maybe to another location.....but they do need to clean this store and do something about the smell. read more

I only saw one person when we walked in and we walked in around the time they would have been closing, the gentleman was very kind. Second, the wait wasn't long. So not that long ago when I lived in North Park (in San Diego,CA), I used to frequent this place called Eddie's Philadelphia Steak Hoagies Burgers. Eddie's had the best Philly cheesesteak hoagies I've ever tasted, in the SoCal area... until now. But once I went to the get my fountain drink I noticed tons of k at like bugs flying around.
