Ah, Philly's best. A classic Irvine establishment, and a perennial favorite of mine in college. When in Rome, I did as the Romans did. I took the bus to work every day, over 2 miles of walking per day. Meals were mostly vegetarian, few desserts, very little junk food. Upon arriving stateside, I was a lanky 6'4" 155--an acceptable look for Italy, but not quite in tune with the Abercrombie & Fitch look that was prevalent at the time. It was time to beef up, and what better way than long workout sessions followed by a beefy cheesesteak meal? I am well aware that purists decry the use of provolone, peppers, mushrooms and pizza sauce, but it's hard to care when these things taste so good. The Amoroso rolls are delicious and if Philly's Best makes "California style" cheesesteaks, then I guess I prefer it the California way. It's also a great place to catch a game. Also, this is just about the only place I am likely to embrace Americana and opt for a Rolling Rock. There are plenty of good places to eat in Irvine, but let's face it, the best ones are Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. Philly's Best is a welcome change of pace. Philly's Best serves some mean Philly Cheesesteaks!! I've tried the Cheesesteak and the Pepper Steak, but I personally liked the Philly Cheesesteak better. They hook you up with the meat and they taste ohhh-sooo-delicious with their cheese fries. Basically, large cuts of crispy fries covered in cheese sauce. A cause for a heart attack? Perhaps-- but who cares??? The food is just TOO good! I've also tried the Philly Cheeseburger here, and it's pretty good! My brother always gets the Cheeseburger because it's his favorite item on the menu here. Too bad I didn't know that this place accepts cash only. I came here STARVING on a late Friday night and just as I was done ordering from the menu, they told me "Cash Only." Ugh. I had to make a trip to the bank to get cash from the ATM and came back, but my fault for not reading their puny "We accept cash only" sign, I suppose. Everytime I come here, I'm usually the only girl. No girls man enough to handle cheesesteaks or what?? I see a lot of older "dudes" having a beer with their cheesesteak and watching the game. I was craving a Philly Cheesesteak for weeks. Unfortunately for me, my card declined after being in Mexico the previous night. Regardless of my card declining, the 2 gentlemen working there proceeded to make my food and insisted eating it while I was on the phone to unblock my card. If that isn't the best customer service and treatment, I don't know what is. I greatly appreciated what they did and the food was absolutely delicious (nothing new there). I have tried the Phillys Best in Oceanside before and it was pretty good. I decided to stop here on my way home from LA since I guess this is the OG one around these parts. Very easy to get to, about a mile off the freeway. I pull up and park and head on in..... I ordered a steak with onions, sweet peppers and whiz. Total for the sandwich and a coke was $10.50. That sure is the going rate. I got 3 cheesesteaks in the last 3 days, each place ordered a sandwich and a coke and each place was within 10 cents of $10.50. Good to see the cheesesteak places are in unison as far as price. Waited about 5 minutes and out came the sandwich. The sandwich was meh and here is why. It looked ok but I could tell right away this thing was going to be messy. The whiz, peppers and onions were sort of sitting on top of the meat. I prefer my stuff to be mixed together and incorporated nicely. I picked up my sandwich and the shit started to fall apart. Not good at all! Whiz was dripping down my fingers, peppers and onions were falling off to the side, the bread was just annihilated with juice and shit and everything else. (They do use Amoroso rolls which is good) I swear to God I used at least 20 napkins....possibly more. I tried to rush and eat it just so it wouldnt fall apart anymore. The taste was alright. Not much flavor. It was an average cheesesteak. They did have cherry coke which was awesome. Outside of Del Taco you dont find it offered at too many places. Overall just a meh experience. I doubt I would ever come back to this place. The steak was probably 2.5 star worthy but the cherry coke bumped it up to 3 stars.....barely! Completely undeserving of both their 4 stars and their name. Tried their Philly's 'Best'... yeah right... at the most not even mediocre but sub-par just like their unprofessional staff. Heard the girl working there use the f-word and not to mention she was quite unenthusiastic. Did I mention this place reeked of cheap cleaning supplies? I had an insane craving for a philly cheesesteak and this was only 8 minutes away. The cheesesteaks here come with white american cheese instead of that god awful cheese whiz-- +1. I opted for a simple cheesesteak with fried onions. The onions were not fried nor caramelized. They were in that limbo stage where they're starting to brown but not caramelized; had they taken them further it would have been even better. I can't imagine that wouldn't be hard to do since there's a pile of already sauteed onions in the corner of the grill. The sandwich comes with a small, delightful puddle of au jus. Had I been hungrier I would have ordered fries to soak up those lovely juices. Customer service is nothing to rave about and the decor is athletically tacky, but if you're going to a cheesesteak joint for the ambiance then you should probably re-prioritize. read more

Went to college in Philly and lived there for a few years after, so after seeing a bunch of friends enjoy steaks on NYD we tried to find some in town. Had high expectations for this place after reading reviews. Unfortunately they weren't met. Ordered delivery with post mates so we know it would have been better if we ate there but when you have a delivery for 7 people and no happy campers, it's just disappointing. That was our experience with this lunch order yesterday. Don't add sweet peppers 5 cheese steak hoagies (extremely soggy) 2 cheese steaks+ whiz (best option for delivery, still soggy) Cheese fries with steak, no good ! I love cheesesteaks! And this place makes a bomb sandwich :) Philly's Best with Mushrooms and Onions = the thing to get. Sprinkle on some of the Old Bay seasoning, hot sauce, and extra peppers and BAM. AWESOME! Fries are good also. We tried the pizza fries which were a BIT too cheese-whiz-y, so it wasn't my cup of tea. The cheesesteak is a pretty good size portion for a good price and that SEASONING is to DIE for. So, don't miss it! The service is extremely personable. The server made jokes and talked to each and every one of us (party of 5) and commented about SOMETHING. - He could be seen as a bit insulting (some comments were funny attacking-type jokes), BUT it's all in good fun and nothing too serious. Staff was friendly and service was prompt. I got the Philly's best sandwich and pizza fries to go. I appreciated that they kept the sauce separate from the fries to keep them from getting soggy but overall it was very bland. The meat in the sandwich was tough and the onions undercooked. Came here twice in two consecutive days, definitely not a good idea for the body. Having tried the original philly cheesesteak and their special Philly's Best [cheese steak with sweet peppers and mushrooms], the second sandwich is far superior to the original cheesesteak. Go big or go home (and get chubby while at it). Food coma is almost guaranteed. I noticed that the place is near empty if you manage to skip the lunch rush and the food comes out fairly fast. Service overall is quick and friendly. Lots of bread crumbs on tables though and it takes a while for the staff to get around to cleaning it up so that could be a turn off to new customers. LOL... Man, I start this review and I am laughing a little because I first walk into this location on Barranca today for lunch and it has a bunch of teenagers behind the counter who think they are all hard and sh*t. I just wanted to break out and laugh when I walked up to order. Anywho.... I ended up getting a Philly Mushroom Steak and a drink. Its a little on the pricey side for lunch at about $10, but I do have to admit, it is tasty as a hell. The beef and cheese combination is definitely an awesome pairing. Imagine... you have your standard Philly Cheese Steak you bite the top part off... but the best bite in that sandwich is the bottom half. The melted cheese like runs down to the bottom half of the sandwich and its trapped by the fluffy bread unable to escape. Then you bite into that bottom piece and it is a gooey mix of beef, cheese and bread. !$@$#$%%^&^% Yummy! If it were a couple of bucks cheaper, this would be the best place on the planet. People would flock here from all over (ok, at least in from the Irvine area because they have locations outside Irvine) and people would be happy while they ate. Ordered cheesesteak and a cheese fries through DoorDash for lunch today. Cheesesteak was good but was very disappointed with the cheese fries's portion. Even a kid's meal fries has a bigger portion than this. For a $3.29 plus service fee cheese fries, I would expect a bigger portion. Here's the photo upon removing the cheese fries out of the bag. By far the best! I am glad to be working in the heart of Irvine again so that when I need a PB fix, I can hit the best! The HB store is the worst that I have been too. The Lake Forest one is a notch above that. Santa Ana is pretty damn good too but Barranca in Irvine is the best Philly's Best in County. Also the best cheesesteaks West of PA. And you can't go wrong with the beer battered onion rings (by far the best way to do these). AND their soda fountain has the best Cherry Coke (as mentioned before!)! read more

The name says it all. Philly's Best is by far THE best place in SoCal to go to when it comes to grabbing a Philly cheesesteak sub. I've been to numerous cheesesteak shops, claiming their's is the authentic real deal. Blah...none of those comes close when you compare to this gem of a place. I mean, to even call it an authentic cheesesteak, you better have the "Philly" in the Philly cheesesteak, right? Well, Philly's Best has done their homework and what separates this place from the wannabes is they use the good stuff shipped directly from Philadelphia: the bread, the cheese and yes, even the beef. And it's all cooked the way it should. Walk in and you're presented with walls plastered in Philadelphia Eagles + city memorabilia among other items. And there's a big screen to catch the latest sports. This is a good place to go to if you wanna catch the game, and it's the place to be during football season... if you're an Eagles fan that is. The staff are friendly and also big Philly fans, not surprisingly. So what do you get for your $8 bucks worth? A huge helping of, you guessed it, the best cheesesteak the OC has to offer. I particularly like the regular cheesesteak loaded with grilled onions and mushrooms. Pile high and loaded, the toppings start falling out the moment you take a bite into this artery-clogging goodness. And it's all so delicious. If only it weren't so oily, but hey, where's the fun in that? If you're willing to put your life on hold, there's also the hoagies, fries and onions rings that are all very good. Some may say the prices are a bit on the expensive side, but you do get a lot of food and it's good food made right. Summer of 2005 was my longest Philly's Best streak. I went here two to three times a week with my college buddies before going back and hitting up Halo on the XBox. I was introduced to this place by those same college buddies, and I should add that all of them are large people...so if they say a particular restaurant is good, you follow that advice, dammit. Every time I left here, I felt like doing nothing afterward but sit down and play video games or take a nap. Pretty much anything not physically demanding. Getting a traditional cheesesteak on a hoagie with a side of their fries is seriously more than enough for most eaters. It's seriously very authentic. I've even been to Philadelphia and had a cheesesteak in front of Independence Hall, and even that didn't feel as authentic enough for me. If I could give it no stars I would. But I'll give it one to acknowledge that my food was in fact good. However, that's where it ends. I visited the Irvine location on 7/23/15 around 1:45pm. I was on my lunch break and didn't think that calling my order in would be necessary because really, how long does it take to make a cheesesteak? Apparently a lot longer when you are ignored by the people behind the counter. I was not greeted by the woman at the register and she didn't make one move to help me when I up to the counter. So I stood there to see just how long she was going to ignore me. She never helped me. She instead gave all of her time to a man who was making a request to slightly change his order. This would have been fine if the cook was not already speaking to him. While he was speaking to the cook she could have taken my order, but she didn't. I continued to stand there for another five minutes, because I shouldn't have to tell you how to do your job. Not to mention I was pissed and if I had spoken to her I would have embarrassed her, so I kept quiet while contemplating whether I should leave or not. Finally, a man with a bucket of ice comes out and she runs to the ringing phone while asking him to help me. So, I order my food and I wait while still keeping a smile on my face. In walks a white woman with her son and she is greeted by the quiet woman with a chipper, "WELCOME!" At this point I'm pissed, still smiling, while also being a little confused. SHE SPEAKS! The female customer that walked in smiles in my direction and I return her smile. The woman who didn't help me tells the woman to let her know when she is ready and that she will help her. While the woman is looking at the menu, I notice that the woman who didn't help me is staring at me. I give her a pleasant smile because at this point I just want to get the hell out of there. She affords me a fake smile that looked painful and then turns away. Not a minute goes by before I noticed her staring at me again. I find this quite amazing seeing as how she didn't even look my way when I walked in. The customer pulls her attention away when she begins to order. Now my food is ready. The man who rang me up smiled and told me to have a nice day, and I did the same to him because he was really the only person in there that I genuinely liked. By the time I left my lunch hour was over. This could have been avoided if she had just acknowledged me and taken my order when I walked in while she had absolutely NOTHING to do! But she didn't. She instead ignored me and helped three other people (the man who was changing his order, the person on the phone, and the lady who walked in with her son). I've been in customer service for over ten years and what I know for sure is how to handle I crowd of people. I for damn sure know how to handle a ringing phone while a customer stands in front of me and this wasn't it. I'd hate to believe that the reason I wasn't helped by this woman is because I am in fact a Black woman, but there is no other reasonable explanation behind the way that I was treated. I paid for a sandwich I dint eat and the too gentleman there was so rude that I threw the sandwich back on the counter and walked out. They totally mess up my food and wanted to be a**hole's about it. They were closing turned off the grill, but when we showed up, they turned on the grill again and made sandwiches! These are good kids who care & go above & beyond service!! I have never been to Philadelphia. I have never had an authentic Philly Cheesesteak right from the source. I have never owned a hamster. (This review is just a list of things I've never done by the way, strap in). I have never fallen off a horse. I have never danced with the devil in the pale moonlight. I have never set fire to a church. Maybe that's not what you people want to read. Fair enough. As far as cheesesteaks go, I enjoyed mine from Philly's Best the most. Now now, I know it is a chain, and typically I have a rule against reviewing chains (a rule I never really cared about and break regularly). But you have to understand it from my point of view...shut up. Our meal for the day consisted of a Philly's best for myself (the whole shebang, if you will) and a chicken & cheese for my wife (she didn't know there was a fully loaded option for the chicken because they hide it all the way at the bottom of the menu), plus fries. The fries were good. They might have been frozen, but there was still hints of skin on them so at the very least they aren't super processed. They tasted great and were cooked well, and thankfully did not suffer from oversaltiness. And as I stated above, I really enjoyed the cheesesteak. I think the major tipping point for me was the fact that it was not overly greasy, which kills a lot of cheesesteaks I have tried (which typically taste great and then decide later on that day to kill me quickly from the inside out). Portion sizes are also plentiful, so sharing may be in order if you aren't super hungry. Now is there room for improvement? Yes, of course. Do I know where that improvement may come in? Nope. I guess the menu issue can be addressed. Why is the obviously most common option (with all the fixins) tucked away at the bottom of the menu? What, are you working up to that? Is it some grand reveal after keeping us in suspense? Don't do that. Top billing every time. Like Leonardo Dicaprio in Critters 3, own the star. read more

Very good cheesesteaks. Make sure to tell them NOT to put the lettuce on when it is on the grill - it gets soggy and soggy lettuce is gross. Add vinegar, hot peppers and salt and pepper at the table. I've never been to Philadelphia, but you can't deny that the Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches at Philly's best hits the spot every time!! I like getting the Philly's Best, which comes with sweet peppers and mushrooms (don't forget to add the onions), an order of fries, and a cream soda. Now those three things make up a damn good meal. The sandwich alone is a good size. It's packed with meat and veggies and topped of with loads of melted cheese that just oozes out when you pick that thing up. They cut the sandwich in half to make it easier for you to eat and I appreciate the help! Nothing better than a place that makes it easier for you to be a fatty! I agree with Mariel C. It would be wise to eat the Philly cheese steak and fries right away. Don't try and take it home... you're going to ruin it and that would really suck. LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!!!!! It is like a guilty pleasure. I love eating here, love the grease, and love the flavor. This place is amazing despite all their Philadelphia Eagles banners and pictures, (I'm a Cowboys fan) I can get passed that to enjoy this great sandwich that comes from Philly. I feel like I could eat two every time I come here. This place can become very addicting, so I must come here in moderation. The service is good, they are always friendly. BRING CASH, they only take cash. Food: Philly's Best with grilled onions and Mushrooms covering it. Fries are good, you can use vinegar on them, and you can't go wrong with the onion rings. These are the only cheesesteaks my boyfriend will eat because they're just that good. The sandwich and fries are always super hot and fresh. Their staff is very friendly as well, which makes for a nice transaction. It's always clean and peppers/pickles are always stocked. Can't ask for anything more! Don't mess around. Philly's Best is incredible. As good as it gets for non - Philly made steaks. Outside of actually acquiring a cheese steak IN Philadelphia, this is the ONLY place I recognize. If you want indulgent fat kid food (and really, who doesn't?), this is the place to get it. The people are friendly & the service is quick. If I were less vain, I might consider eating here a few times a week, however the cheese steak goodness must be kept to a mild infatuation as opposed to full fledged obsession (for fear of pushing maximum density). During football season, watch out for a packed house of raucous patrons. The kind you'll either love or hate. I got nothin' but love. They take their Iggles (Philly-speak for Eagles) almost as seriously as their food, (and Philly locals, Yuengling beer & Tasty Cakes). Count me in! read more

I've never been to Philly and had an authentic Philly Cheesesteak, but the cheesesteaks here are pretty good. You have several choices of cheese and veggies. You can get peppers and onions, just peppers, just onions, and they offer an option of sauteed mushrooms. They also have chicken if you don't want beef, but what's the point of going to a place known for cheesesteak if you're not going to get steak? Place is good to just hang out with a small group of friends for lunch or dinner and they have a couple of TVs to watch whatever game is on. They don't seem like total diehard Philly fans, but their decor is still about 90% 76ers, Flyers, Eagles, and Phillies paraphernalia. read more

I remember when I first came here, I'd say about 8-10 years ago when I first moved to Irvine. I remember it was delicious back then, and for some reason haven't been back since just today. (Strange huh?) Of course I got the original Philly's Best Steak Sandwich (steak, peppers, onions, cheese, mushrooms... droooooool) and it was cooked to order in about 5 minutes. I love cheesesteaks. I would definitely someday go to Philadelphia to possibly just eat their authentic cheesesteaks, but until then, Philly's Best is satisfying enough for me. The sandwich was cut in half (which was cool since it made it easier to eat) and as I was pulling it apart, the melted cheese was oozing out, perfectly melted. And goodness gracious was it delish! Add a little bit of hot sauce and you're set. :) Charley's and the Steak Escape can't compare, really. Although I do like Charley's a lot.. I think I enjoy Philly's Best much more. They have swiss, american, and cheese wiz. I believe the traditional way is with the wiz, but I love me some melting american cheese. If you want a little spice, they have some good hot sauce there to drizzle on top of your sandwich. Onion rings are delicious and battered lightly. But the thing to try here are the pizza fries. Where's the Beef?!!! Typical "Subway" style franchise version of what could of been good. I don't mind paying more for my Cheese steak just quit whimping out on the meat. Heck, charge me $11 dollars like they do at Pop's in Las Vegas (truely awesome 5 star place) just quit making my sandwich with pre weighed out meat This review goes for you too Jersey Mikes too if anybody cares.
