Instead of going with a chicken cheesesteak or the occasional cheesesteak, today I went with the Stromboli. First of all, holy hell, it's massive. Definitely a two or more person feat - unless you're Beard Meets Food guy. Second, it's amazing. Soft, doughy crust. Nuclear hot cheese and sauce inside. Well done. Service is always fantastic. Restaurant is great, spacious, clean... very Philadelphia-centric (Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers stuff everywhere). Great place for weekday lunch. Or weekend lunch. Second, it's an Eagles bar, full, we got lucky and a family left and an excellent waitress gave us the table. When the eagles scored before halftime, the whole bar broke out singing fly eagles fly, etc. along with some dj shit over the speakers. It had been ten years since I last visited, but I was craving a Philly cheesesteak at the beach and decided to give Philly's Finest a chance. The experience was mixed. On the positive side, it looks like an amazing spot for game days, especially if you're into Philly sports. There are lots of TVs and memorabilia on the walls. They also have an ice bar, which is a unique touch. While I'm not sure it kept my beer much colder, it was still cool nonetheless. For craft beer, they had some interesting local options on tap, though they were a few dollars more than expected. The bartender was nice but definitely gave more attention to the regulars, which I guess is fine. The real reason you go to Philly's Finest, though, is for the cheesesteak. In this respect, they fell short. I would rank it behind Eddie and Sons, Surfwiches, and D&LPs. The roll, cheese, and meat were all good but in much smaller portions than other shops. The price was crazy at nearly $20, not including fries. I might visit again in ten years, but I won't be rushing back to Philly's Finest because the value simply isn't there for the experience you get. read more

Phillys are very good. Only change I would make is the bread to make them even better (toasted or warm?, bread came out cold as compared to the filling, bread tasted good though). The seasoned fries were great. Beers were great. I though the ice bar thing was gimmicky, but holy cow I have never had a beer stay ice cold the entire time I nursed it. So that was amazing. If you can get past all the Philly sports decor (go Pats!), it's a great experience. Fast, delicious food, friendly staff, and reasonably priced for the amount of food you get. I had been to Philly's Finest before probably about 5 or so years ago and us underwhelmed but back then we had ordered pick up and then drive back to our place in town center so it was at the top of their game. This time a friend asked if we wanted to go with them for the Birds game and we figured this would be the best time to try them out again. We arrived around 7:45PM and the place was pretty packed but we figured it would be since it was game day. Luckily for us we were able to get a high top. This place is loaded up with TVs so don't worry about where you are sitting you will be able to watch the game. Would for sure want to come back when it's less packed and try sitting at the ice bar. We started off with drinks. I went with a draft of Landshark since they had a special on them. I think it was $4.25 or $4.75 which isn't bad. We were hungry since we were eating later then normal so we order the Fried Pickle Chips for a appetizer. They came out pretty quickly which was good since we were starving. The pickle chip were good but were nothing to write home about. Had for sure had multiple that are better. Batter was just a little too thick for me. Being at Philly's Finest did you really even go if you didn't get a cheesecake? I'll answer it for you. You didn't! I wen with the Philly Cheesesteak which is served with onions and White American but I opted for Cheese Whiz. At this point should have have Whiz Wit on the menu. We also ordered Old Bay Fries since the Cheesesteaks do not come with a side. My cheesesteak was great. On a fresh Amoroso Roll with tender steak (no tough pieces here), perfectly cooked onion and Cheese Whiz all thought-out. For sure top 3 cheesesteak I have had in Jax. The Old Bay Fries were good but were really just crinkle cut fries with Old Bay sprinkled on top for $10. At least it does come with Cheese Whiz for sipping too. Philly's Finest is cooking up some amazing cheesesteak but it is on the pricier side. A cheesesteak is $14 and doesn't come with a side and again $10 for fried with old bay is a little more too. But if your looking for a great authentic cheesesteak this is for sure the place. read more

I met John for lunch here the other day in between work and an appointment and we were happy we did! It's a Cheesesteak joint meets sports bar and the Philly's were very good. I was born and raised outside of Philly- and some places are meh, some are spot on and this place was above the outside Philly average. Our server (which I forget now- I tried to commit it to memory, but I am getting old-er) was fantastic. He checked on us numerous times and was quick with the check too. Do yourself a favor and go to Philly's Finest when a Philly sports team is playing, the restaurant is electric! We stopped by to grab a cheesesteak with some friends and watch an Eagles game. The service was exactly what you want in a busy restaurant nice but to the point. We walked in and were quickly shown to a table and asked what we wanted to drink. Our waitress was helpful and some how as loud as it was she was still able to hear everything we ordered. I got an order of fried pickles for the table and a cheesesteak. I was so hungry I ate the pickles before I could take a picture or even really taste what I was eating, i'm pretty sure they were very good though. The cheesesteak was delicious the bread was probably the best part and what truly made the sandwich. The bread was fresh it was soft but crispy on the outside, it perfectly complemented the cheesesteak. The meat was tender and the cheese wasn't overpowering but you knew it was there. All around I would say it's in my top two best cheesesteaks in Jacksonville. I would also recommend a basket of Old Bay fries for the table, especially if you are there for a sporting event so you have something to nervous snack on. read more

I visited Philly when I was 13 years old, meaning it's been more than half a lifetime since my introduction to cheesesteaks. My dad took me to Pat's and Geno's, and as an impressionable kid being exposed to infamous establishments I fell in love with the Philly cheesesteak process! Philly's Finest has been on the old radar since I moved to Jax, so I stumbled in last week when the sandwich cravings were all too real. I knew two things upon walking in - they claim to make authentic Philly cheesesteaks and they are the only ice bar in town. They delivered on both fronts. I am happy to report that the Philly Cheesesteak from Philly's Finest is excellent. The meat shaved thin, onions sautéed beautifully, and American cheese that sticks like glue. The amoroso roll acts as the hammock for these marrying ingredients, and its softness comforted my teeth like a warm blanket. Only qualm for me was that I felt like they could've been a bit more generous with the meat. Along for the ride were crispy tater tots that got better with each bite. If this place were a walk up counter, old school sandwich shop my rating would be much higher. As I described, the food is fantastic. However, Philly's Finest is a massive sports bar that can use a makeover. Hell, I'm not from Philly, I'm not their primary demographic, but for such a massive space and only two other patrons during my hour long visit, I don't think I'm the only one longing for something fresh. The ice bar is unique and probably appeals to people who drink cheap beer. From working in breweries I discovered if the beer tastes good, you don't need it to be as cold as the Rockies. For a Florida sports bar, it's still pretty cool. On my drive back over the ditch, I kept saying to myself, man if the atmosphere were different I'd try to come back more often. I'll more than likely pop in alone when the cheesesteak cravings set in, but I can't imagine bringing my girlfriend for a date. We got some waffle fries which came out super fast and hot, which was good with a short attention span little one. They were really good, too. Crispy and hot. $2.99 for a small basket, is small, barely shareable. But I knew the sandwich would be huge so I didn't need fries. The Philly cheesesteak came with onions, that I expected to be caramelized but they were closer to raw. The meat was really hot and the cheese was well melted, but the roll was cold. I was a bit disappointed in the onions being almost crunchy, but all in all the flavor was pretty good. They aren't plating things to be pretty, so it was just a cheesesteak on a plastic plate - simple. $9.99 is almost too much for just a sub. The staff was friendly and patient with our crew. I don't drink so I'm not sure if the bar prices or drinks are good or bad. The atmosphere is definitely sports bar. Memorabilia on the walls and a pretty dark place. The restroom is down a hall and should be avoided if sober - it smelled a bit and wasn't nice. I feel for the staff having no choice. But, being a big believer in second chances, I went again...and again; and sadly still can't get behind these steaks. I think the problem comes down to the bread. On my most recent trip, it just didn't taste very fresh, and it really brings down the entire sandwich when the bread isn't at the top of its game. If I'm paying $13 for a cheesesteak, I would hope that at least secured me some fresh Philly-style bread. I will say the waffle fries are a nice touch. I feel like they're dangerously underrepresented in the side dish community. It's also great that they give you a bottle of hot sauce alongside your bottle of ketchup. No French fry deserves to be without hot sauce. Overall, it's an awesome hangout for a Philly fan like me.
