As an IPA lover, I always enjoy their beers. They had their famous Karate in the Garage, but also a variety of anniversary IPA's. They had an imperial Samoa stout. Now this was interesting. It tasted like a Girl Scout cookie, and was 10%. A small one of these was best. I would give them a 5, but so many kids running around and their parents not paying attention is such a negative. Bartenders are attentive, and remember you time after time. Always enjoy live musics and they had 2 artists there that Sat and it was quite delightful! We love Southern Swells! Good beer, great atmosphere, great service. We have the yearly membership, the dojo club and come often. We've been bringing our baby since he was about 2 weeks old and he's 8.5 months now. He loves it almost as much as we do. There is always a good crowd, often live music or great emo jams playing, vendors, and so much fun! We love to spot a good dog while we're there. The baby gets super excited. Session IPAs are tasty and help me drive home safe. My husband always buys at least a 4 pack on our way out to have at home. Such a great brewery!! read more

Located in a strip shopping center along Beach Blvd., but has a cool vibe. I had the Czech Pilsner which is a larger and had a refreshing finish. The person attending the bar was friendly and was willing to answer any questions as well as provide a sample if interested. So I would give it a 3.5 stars. Located in a strip mall that shares a side patio with Talkin Tacos. (I'll review that on its own) The people here are super nice & helpful. There were about 10 options available. The staff will even let you try first. Sadly the cider option wasn't brewed here so for me that defeated the purpose so I got another light amber style. The area has room but for some reason the bar itself is small. Went on a Saturday late afternoon. Honestly for a more quaint inside space, I could do without small kids around in a brewery. My opinions. Not like they're even sitting outside. One lady holding a baby right at the bar and it's not easy as it is to squeeze in and order so we had to walk over to the side to make it easier. I don't like reaching through people anyways. I mean barely a toddler is walking all around in the bar area. I mean it's not like there's just 1 or 2 either. So, back to the positives, according to the board and their FB page they offer events here and specials that look appealing. They have TVs and game specials also. Known for their hazy IPAs, they also have "real" IPAs -- west coast. Wacky employees, moderately interesting interior. No food, but if you are starved, there is the taco joint next door (not tried but some folks like it.) All-in-all, it's an OK place. Just nothing special. The location and inside seemed nice. They had an ok craft selection but a lot of seltzer options. I get it but also that wasn't what I went for. Prices were a bit higher then I would typically expect. $7.5-8 per beer. I think $7 is about avg from what I've seen these days. Great brewery in Jax Beach! Easy to find, lots of parking, friendly service and excellent brews. I've had a stout and a porter from here. Both were great. I've had karate in the garage a few times as I live in St. Augustine and some places have it on tap here. I have to say the beer is amazing. Beer was crisp and made to drink like it was small batch, quality beer. The reason why I'm giving it was 2 star review is because the two beertenders were just so off putting. Yes, we brought small kids (so did everyone else there seemingly) and it felt like they were constantly looking down on us. I asked them to stamp my JAX ale trail passport booklet and the beertender kid of chuckled/rollered her eyes and made me feel embarrassed to ask. Also didn't like that the games were 21+ only (strict rule on that). No one there was using them and if only people 21+ can use them then they're just a huge waste of space. I had really high hopes but the condescending and unfriendly service really just killed it. Had 1 beer and my group of 12 opted to go another brewery down the road where the service was immaculate and so family friendly. I'll buy their beer again but won't be back. read more

Met a friend here one night since it was close to where he was staying at the time. It was a really cute place with lots to choose from. There was a large party in one of the back rooms but even with a full room it wasn't disturbing to the patrons out in the main area. I noticed a big screen TV but wasn't paying much attention to it at the time as I was trying to catch up with my friend I hadn't seen for a couple of years. When I first pulled into the parking lot I wasn't so sure about what I was going to find once I walked in but I was surprised and very pleased. Everyone was very nice and helpful. Good solid beer selection with a strong preference towards New England IPA beers and sours. Sours are not my bag but IPAs are. Southern Swells has a large bar with a few high tops surrounding it. There are two large rooms capable of hosting large groups. A big screen TV is available for sports games. There was about 10 of their own drafts and a few extra guest taps available. We've visited a few times before so we stopped in for a quick flight. Came for the first time and I'm glad I waited till 3pm to Enter. Nick greeted me as soon as I entered and was very attentive. Nick helped me choose the beers that were right for me. I tasted a few then made a decision on my flight. This brewery is located in a large shopping mall and the actual brewery has a large space to entertain many. I do like the beer's on tap and the barrels located along side large wall entering the brewmaster space. The restrooms are large and clean. This location has large windows with nice views of an exterior lounge which has seating and standing for many. Really good beers near the beach, can't get any better than that (well, it can). My favorites on my visit were the NE IPA's and I also liked the coffee porter, very strong coffee coming through. Prices are good, the crowd is thin although there are several locals at the bar. Towards the back, there are tables, chairs, a kid's section, and a ping pong table also. Came here for the UYE and I had fun with my fellow Yelpers! Place was packed! Turned out it was their second year anniversary and they also have an event to celebrate the occasion! The place was beside the mini doughnut shop that I have tried before. Would've loved to grab one but we came here for the beer and they did not disappoint! I like their beer! Tried the Karate in the Garage as recommended by my fellow Yelper Gabs, it was good! Also ordered their Two Year Anniversary IPA. They seem similar to the karate, but like I said they were great! In addition, there was a live band playing good music! And more people were standing outside just talking and drinking their beer. This is a really cool place to hangout with friends. I came here for a Yelp UYE EVENT. It was kind of chaotic, because I was the first person here and did not know what to do. I did not have a pre-paid ticket for the event about to take place, because I did not think I would be able to make it there on this day. All in all, everyone of my Yelp friends started showing up and I felt relieved to see some familiar faces that I know and love so much! We ended up having a wonderful time visiting with each other. I walked inside and went to the back after I got my drink and it was Community table type seating and they were full to capacity. I stood and listened to the Young man singing. He was pretty good. Then I went back outside to enjoy the rest of my wine. I had other commitments, so I was the first to leave. I had a great time with my Yelp family. Southern Swells Brewing just turned two. Some of my Yelp buddies and I attended the celebration last weekend. Festival tickets were sold out, but that didn't stop us lol. We were able to purchase beer at the bar inside and hung out on the sidewalk. We could choose from 20 difference beers on tap. I first tried Resting Berry Face. This beer offered a sweet flavor initially, but on the back end there was a little bitter. The second beer I tried was Tangerine Kombucha. This was a light beer, but I didn't really taste any sweet as I thought I would with Tangerine in the name. Service was pretty slow as this was a well advertised celebration and the weather was pretty warm for January, so there was quite a crowd. I would have thought with the anticipation of so many patrons there would have been more than three bartenders. This is something to think about for the next big event. It would have been helpful for me to sample some of the beer before purchasing. But since it was so crowded I didn't even ask. I'm not a huge IPA fan, more of a shandy girl, but if you are this is your new spot and you just don't know it yet! read more

Their own beers were very good, with a wide variety of IPAs, pale ales, stouts, porters, and a sour. The bar is large with plenty of seats. This is my favorite brewery in Jax. They do IPAs like no other. Last night I attended their 2 year anniversary party. Each hour they released a new beer. I took a few sips of some of their new releases but stayed with the Karate in the Garage as my main drink choice. They had live music throughout the night, vendors set up, and a separate beer festival next door in the mini donuts space. This place was packed! Not normally like this on any given night. Despite their being mass amounts of people the service was top notch and the lines were moving quick. Only downside is dogs are not allowed inside, a state rule so not their fault. This is my first time here. Awesome open space, very chill vibe. Sipping on the Hazier Shade of Pale beer the bartender helped me pick out. Wasn't insane about their best seller karate in the garage, but I love their large selection and friendly atmosphere. It smells like yummy sour hops. I want to eat the smell. Which drink is that in?! I come here, as well as Engine 15 (located just west on Beach), a couple times a month. I'm always turn at my decision at which brewery to go to, because I enjoy the beer at Southern Swells more (*karate in the garage* is incredible), but the lack of food is really unfortunate. If this location had a kitchen, or even a few microwaveable snacks, it would be the clear choice going forward. They do allow outside food in, which is great, but the options in their parking lot are limited. If you plan ahead and bring some food, it's a wonderful spot. read more

Alright, here's the low down since my last review. Southern Swells might make my favorite beer in NE Florida. I can't commit fully, but I'm almost certain this is the absolute truth. The NE IPA's are bonkers, plain and simple. And they produce so many of them. I'm at the point where I can't even keep up with their biweekly can releases. They seem to get better each time. Start with Karate in the Garage (roughly 6% ABV) and work your way up. Hazy IPA's all the way. The space is super fun, but does get super loud. Know that going in. Plenty of room to mingle with fellow beer lovers, casual acquaintances, or furry friends. Only a few beertenders on hand, yet they hustle their butts off. Love everything these guys are doing. I may be attempting to ween myself slowly off of beer, but Southern Swells deserves every ounce of praise.
