The husband of the innkeeper where we were staying in Saugatuck suggested this place on our first day there. And I have to agree with one of the people on here that from the outside it does not look special at all.....but wait until you walk in. It's a very romantic like atmosphere, dimmed lights, not very big atall, art on the walls and I love the brown paper on the tables. WONDERFUL! MY girlfriend and I went here off of a recommendation from a shop owner on Venetian night and its a good thing we did. They fit us into their packed schedule, the waitress was friendly, accommodating, and as fast as she could be with the huge crowd. The food was amazing. My gf had the steak salad which was quite an ample serving. The steak came out just perfect and tender. I had a salad with apples, and candied nuts, and gorgonzola... Happiest of happy campers. My husband and I were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary and had a short get away in Saugatauk. On our last night, we decided to go to Phil's for dinner as it was a short walk from where we stayed. We got there at 6:00 p.m. (it was a Wednesday night) and were seated right away (I bet this place has a line during the weekends). We were greeted right away by our friendly waitress who recommended the made to order white bread loaf (takes up to 15 minutes). OMG! It was seriously the best bread I ever had. We even asked where they bought it (I was hoping it was something I can order via online) but the restaurant said they couldn't give that info (not surprised). It was a white piping hot bread loaf served with this yummy butter. I could have eaten the whole loaf by myself but my husband had to stop me. If you come to Phil, you HAVE to seriously order the bread (it's not on the menu). I ordered the bbq ribs and hubby ordered the blackened salmon. Our entrees were really good and portions were huge. My ribs were fall off the bone with this great bbq sauce (had a spice to it which I liked) and I tried the salmon which was really yummy (had this great blackened rub on it, served with crab cake and a good unique type of salad). We went to Phil's bar and grill in saugatuck last Friday. We had great food I can't say the same for the hostess. We just had paid our bill when the hostess came to our table and asked us to leave because they had people waiting for a table. We were all shocked and speechless. We thought that was extremely rude of her since like I said we literally just paid. Now I know with this COVID stuff every restaurant has less seating and we know that and would never have just sat there and held up a table. What that hostess did was uncalled for and not professional. Not sure what her name was but she was older and had short dark hair. Lobster Cobb is was excellent, the chicken wings were not as anticipated...they are massive, hard to eat, need to be cut by Chef and should have small drumsticks too not just actual huge wings of a chicken. The bartender was great and so was the server she was fast and efficient. The outdoor seating needs lights outside strung up so you can read your menu, see your food...this is the second place in town that the outdoor seating had no lights or candles, I've never seen anything like it in other parts of the country. read more

Just amazing.. We ate here after the drive in from Chicago, and after dealing with the Thanksgiving traffic, I really wanted something low key and didn't want to dress up just to grab some dinner. Phil's was perfect for this. The interior is very neighborhood bar, and not even really upscale, just your regular watering hole look. Their decorating belies their amazing menu. We started with the chips and salsa, and they really have a high quality, home made salsa. Fresh tomatoes, corn, etc.. though there is almost no juice involved, so if you're a chip dipper, rather than a scooper, you may be disappointed. They make their own Chiabatta bread for sandwich buns and it's very good, my burger was cooked very well and had a good flavor. My wife ordered the filet and it was outstanding. The mashed potatoes had bits of bacon in them, and the entire dish belonged in a 5 star restaurant.. We did not see that one coming out a pub environment. The creme brule was also out of this world, again, something you'd expect out of a heavy-weight dining establishment. Prices were very reasonable, and they gave us a parting gift of a couple of baggies of animal crackers. Very impressed with Phil's, and when we're back in Saugatuck it will become a regular on the dinner list. Don't judge this one by its interior, give their menu a shot. read more

Eating out and trying new places is an adventure when you are on vacation and Phil's is the main attraction! I cannot say enough great things about this place! We went on a busy night and we were quoted 30 minutes but only waited about 20. The server was friendly and attentive, the ambiance was fun and lively and the food.... oh the food... A++++! My wife and I jokingly over the past few days have mentioned "Would it be crazy to drive 3 1/2 hours just to eat at Phil's and then drive back to Indianapolis?" Oh Phil...you really shouldn't have! Your rough exterior does not give any indication of the gourmet chef hidden inside. As I walked up and saw your old theater diggs, I had no idea how amazing you would turn out to be! Starting off with a Moose Drool and a Oberon was the perfect way to my heart. Not to mention, that fantastic beer gorgonzola ale dip...it was out of this world! You really sealed the deal when I tasted the sirloin paired with balsamic brussel sprout carrot slaw and creamy mashed potatoes. Stopped in for a late lunch here with the family. The waiting area at the front is very cramped and there is no sign to direct people when they come in. Instead they just mill about the front tables. Check in with the hostess when she comes around and wait to be seated. Our server was good. The food was very good and reasonably priced. It was slow to come out of the kitchen. We thought the breasted chicken, the Cuban sandwich and the pesto chicken sandwich were all very good. If you get the Cuban I would recommend getting fries instead of the chips and salsa. Yum! Great space -- it looks like the old movie theater in town. Excellent beer list. They were really busy but able to seat us relatively quickly. Varied menu with both regular entrees and generous sandwiches which was enough for me. The portobello fries starter was a perfect nosh for a winter night. This was the first place recommended to us to eat at and it wasn't too bad. The wait-staff was very friendly, and the place was packed and getting busier and busier every minute. The drinks were also nice and cheap, they even had redbull and vodka - surprising for a bar in a quaint town like Saugatuck! The food was just fair though. I had some kind of potato encrusted walleye, which was the waitresses favorite, and my wife the beer battered fish tacos. But I don't think we'd get either of these dishes again. They weren't bad, just not great. And there is just other stuff on the menu to try. We'd give this place a repeat visit if we are in Saugatuck again, and I think other people should give it a shot. Just got back from a weekend in Saugatuck and I had to write this place up! My husband and I came across it walking around trying to find a place for some drinks. We decided to give Phil's a try and are so happy we did. The ambiance and crowd is great and the bartenders awesome! They have a nice beer selection and make great cocktails all at very reasonable prices. It was so great we went back the next 2 nights. A local suggested this bar to us while we were spending the day in Saugatuck. Thinking the advice of a local was about as good as it could get, we took his advice and checked the place out. It appeared to be a typical bar restaurant - a bit dark, seedy in a good sort of way. The service was prompt, and we quickly ordered our food. We had heard about the famous cheese dip, so we ordered that and an app of the flash-fried portobello fries. Well, it came out pretty quickly, and I would say the dip should be infamous rather than famous. I see a lot of reviews on here saying it's wonderful and heavenly, and I'm a bit miffed. Because I thought it was truly horrible. Maybe, in the middle of a lakeside Michigan January, this stuff would be even a bit satisfying, but as of today, it made me feel like I wanted to keel over the dock. The fries were okay. My boyfriend and I typically eat a lot of Asian food (Thai, Chinese, and Vietnamese specifically). Now, I know it's an inadvisable choice to go to an American bar and order Thai food, but I tend to make piss poor decisions on occasion. So, it turned out to be one of those occasions, and we split the Scallop Pad Thai. Do you know what salt burn feels like? It's when your mouth has that "just eaten spicy food" feeling but you didn't eat any spicy food. It's from salt. I got that from the Pad Thai. I don't know how much soy sauce went into this dish, but I know it was far too much. Normally, when I've made pad thai, I use tamarind, a small amount of soy sauce, oil, lime, and some chili pepper. I tasted none of those ingredients. Just soy sauce. The only acceptable part of the dish was the scallops. I drank so much water trying to keep it down that I hobbled out of the restaurant without peeing. Now, the reason I did this was because my boyfriend, upon using the restroom at the establishment, found that the door does not lock. And people kept walking in on him. I chose to hobble around with my water baby for a couple of blocks to the public restroom rather than living that bathroom experience through. Needless to say (but I'm going to say it anyway, clearly), I was startled to find that this place is well liked for none other than its food! I mean, has no one reviewing this place eaten actually good food before? I'm so confused...Maybe the bar scene in Columbus, OH is just so good and sets the bar so high (actually we do have really good restaurants here. What the food magazines say is true) that I find normal food unacceptable? I don't know. But this was terrible, and I can't change my mind about that. We went to Phil's for lunch. I had the Turkey Reuben. The Turkey tasted and looked like it was hand carved (not 100% sure it actually was) and the thousand island and sauerkraut were particularly good. Far better than a typical pub type reuben. My wife had the fish tacos and although we wished the fish wasn't deep fried, the cabbage and avacados inside were really tasty and fresh. The lime mayonaisse sauce could have been more potent, but a little dash of hot sauce did the trick. Our food came very, very fast. Overall, we liked this place A LOT! I had the Cuban and my wife had the fish tacos. The fish tacos comes with 4 filets on a plate piled high with cabbage and salsa so it was really enough for two people. We came at 6:30 on a Tuesday. Told we had a 15 minute wait. Unfortunately, they gave our table away and the wait turned into 40 minutes. Took 15 minutes to get our order taken, ONE HOUR to get our food. I'm not kidding here folks. Something was seriously wrong on this night. They totally "forgot" our appetizer (which we ordered as we were sitting down) and the place is very loud. To their credit, they comped the appetizer, offered free bread and soup to hold us over, and the waitress was wonderful. Bottom line, the crazy wait sorta ruined our first experience here. read more
