Very cool and modern spot in downtown Douglas outside of Saugatuck. Had a larger group so tried to make a reservation. Was told if we could make it there asap, then they could seat us. There really wasn't anyone in there so not sure about the tough seating opportunities. Food was lackluster and not any good. Mostly Italian fare but just bad options and tasteless food. Opted for the a meatball appetizer which came with charred ciabatta and a tasteless marinara, along with undercooked meatballs. Didn't finish it on account of taste and texture; it just wasn't good and that was the general consensus amongst my entire group. One person opted for the Marguerita pizza and the amount of uncooked flour left on the platter and bottom of the pie was absurd. Flat out that's all he could taste was dust. They also were out of at least two or three tap beers on their list with no replacement and limited options. At least the server was nice and helpful but apparently if you have a larger group than 5 or 6 they cannot split bills. Ours did but we had to "keep it on the lowdown lest her manager hear" that that was allowed by this particular server. There aren't too many choice options in such a small town so I guess take the good with the bad or just go hit the hot dog food truck on the roadside instead. read more

Terrible experience at Wild Dog from the minute we entered the restaurant. Made a reservation on 8/11 for Saturday, 8/22 - more than a week in advance. Had a party of 6. When we were seated the waitress informed us that the grill was down due to ventilation issues and had been for 3 days. As a result, they could not serve the steak, hamburger from their menu but everything else was available. My husband and I and our friends were going there for the steak and hamburger. We all wondered why the restaurant wouldn't have reached out to me since I had made the reservation so far in advance to let us know they had this grill issue. However since this was not done, a second opportunity to communicate with us would have been for the hostess to let us know before she seated us but that never happened either. As a matter of fact, no one told us until after we were seated and ordered drinks. Unacceptable. Why is it that the restaurant can require at the time the reservation was made a $20 fee per person if you don't show up or have a change to your reservation within their specified timeframe but yet they don't have the decency to let you know about the grill issue before you get seated? We wound up ordering food we really didn't want and to top it off wound up waiting for our food for 60 minutes with no communication from our waitress as to what was happening with our food. She had the opportunity to let us know there was a delay since the tables inside and outside were not all taken so she had time to do so.We felt like we were just left out there to guess as to when we would finally get our food. We had to ask the waitress about our food and the delay. She said we were the next ticket up. We decided to ask for the manager - got someone who said they were not the manager, but the "Captain". She said she will check on our food. She came out and said she checked our ticket and it's been 55 minutes since we ordered. And that it is to be expected on a Friday night. I said so everyone's food takes that long and she said - yes. One, it was Saturday not Friday but really the issue was that it was again a missed opportunity to rectify the situation. She made us feel like this was normal and that it was all of us that were crazy for even asking. And when asked about why no contact was made from the beginning about the grill issue she just said I'll give hostess that feedback. How about saying - it has been 55 minutes but it is taking longer tonight because of the issues we've been having with our grill and it's backed up the kitchen. I understand your frustration and appreciate your patience (or something similar if the issue was in fact something else). The food came out - the gyro plate was 29 dollars and it was pretty much a pita with hardly any meat. Those that ordered it left hungry. The chicken piccata pasta was fine but not very flavorful. To top it all off, the waitress came to the table at the end and asked how many drinks we all had so she could get our checks ready. She couldn't even keep track of that although there was plenty of time to do because of the food delay. We were all so frustrated at that point, and the bills came back incorrect. Then and only then, did both owners appear and only because they alleged my husband upset the waitress. It didn't matter how we the customers felt about the whole experience and we were never given the opportunity to explain. My husband was scolded about the waitress and told that if our drinks were wrong on our bills we should work it out amongst ourselves. So now, our poor dining experience was our fault because we upset the waitress and it is our responsibility to figure out the bill. The bill was finally rectified but none of us at the table had ever had an experience at a restaurant like we did at this one. Not one person at this restaurant took ownership to take any of those missed opportunities to turn the situation around or even to just really listen. We will never be back and will tell this story to all we know. read more

Even though we had reservations for over a week, they failed to let us know that the menu was limited due to ventilation issues in the kitchen. My husband ordered the 29 dollar gyro platter and the meat portion was so small, he was still hungry. Food took an hour to arrive and we were told that it was "normal". Got there 15 minutes early and Tod us they had a strict reservation policy... pretty pretentious when only 50 % of facility was seated. Regardless we waited. When we were finally seated and got a waitress... 15 additional minutes later, she proceeded to tell us that the steak board and anything that was grilled was not available so to their ventilation issues and that if we wish we can go elsewhere.... Exactly where on a Saturday evening at prime dinner time was a joke. They could have told us when we checked in so at least we had a 30 start. Because we were so hungry we stayed. That was a mistake as I think McDonald's would have been better. The only thing decent tasting was the salmon which was marred by the fact that it had no presentation whatsoever... just sides thrown in haphazardly and the salmon on top. The pizzas undercooked, the gyro plate entree should have been listed as an appetizer it was that small in portion size. To meatballs were awful. They were steamed and had a mushy texture like baby food. We also had chicken piccata which shouldn't be called that... it was a lightly breaded extremely dry chicken breast on top of noodles that had no flavor. This place needs to know how to use salt as everything needed to be seasoned. This was one of the worst "nice place to eat" I have been to. The icing on the cake is the service... slow seems to be the key pace here. Probably can guess that this will be the first and last we time we go here. Too bad as I support women chefs but this one was totally disappointing. read more

The restaurant is lovely, the service was wonderful. The chicken piccata was not what I expected. While it tasted fine, it was not excellent. The chicken seemed to be battered and deep fried. Normally in chicken piccata it's been pounded thin and pan fried but that is not what this is. I did like the artichokes. read more

The WD did some decor updating and a few menu changes. The table enjoyed the pizza, salads, suppli and sausage and bean soup. It's a solid dining experience but they really need to pay more attention to service. Clearing plates, filling water glasses and excessive waits on food need improvement. read more

This was the most disappointing meal we've had out ever! I ordered the steak Medium it came to the table rare cold , sent it back to be cooked . My husband ordered the gyro platter oven roasted lamb shoulder, the lamb was very over cooked dry and under seasoned. The garlic naan was cold as well right out of the package. It was not eatable. Our waitress did what she could , but the person we talked to from the kitchen told us we were wrong! Arguing with us about everything. What happened to the customer is right? It was seasoned and cooked to order. $29 for bad lamb . This was a " special " event for us that ended up with nothing off the bill and a meal we did not eat . If you go get the burger, but I recommend you don't go at all!! Once again our waitress was very kind . The only good thing about the evening was her service. read more

Server was very friendly and the wine was good. Besides that, not a great experience. We ordered the chicken piccata pasta. It was very watery and had no taste. Like, it was in a pool of water. The chicken was hot but the pasta was cold. It was bad enough for us to send it back. We got the margarita pizza next, should be hard to mess up right? Wrong. Pizza was soggy and bland. It was only bearable to eat after we doused it in salt, pepper, and parmesan cheese. When we got the bill, they tried to argue that we had to pay for the more expensive chicken dish instead of the pizza. We told them we shouldn't have to pay for a dish we sent back when the dish we actually ate was much cheaper. Definitely won't be going back, which is a shame because the servers are nice. read more

Wild Dog. An experience so profoundly disappointing it felt like a dare. The service was indifferent at best, but the real shock was the food - a parade of poorly conceived, freezer-burned mediocrity. The meatballs arrived like sad, gray marbles rolling around in a puddle of lukewarm confusion. The arancini, clearly thawed from a distant corner of the walk-in, had the texture of particle board and all the flavor of a damp napkin. And the fritto misto - an $18 lesson in regret - a pile of soggy, bland seafood fragments, clearly assembled by someone who has only heard rumors of the ocean. The cocktails, if you could call them that, tasted like an afterthought, as if they were mixed by someone who resents liquids. We fled, crossing the street in search of a meal that might at least pretend to care. read more

We went there last night and went back today! The new(2years) owners really care about their customers. The patio is lovely with heaters and he brought us blankets! Our server was also great! We live near detroit or we would be "regulars".The food was outstanding, fresh and reasonably priced as well. read more

The absolute worst service in any restaurant that I have ever been to in my life. It wasn't even busy and it took almost 15 minutes to get our nonalcoholic beverages after we ordered them. We ordered salad and entrées. The waitress brought the salad out at the same time that she brought the hot entrées out. We sent the salad back. The steak was lukewarm, and it was obvious that our waitress fell asleep and forgot our food. Others in our vicinity are also upset with the waitress. The manager came over at our request. We told them what happened and he just gave us a black stare. We could not wait to get the heck out of there and will never, ever return. There are lots of good restaurants in the area and there is no need to go to this one. And by the way, over the years, this is the second time we went to the restaurant because the first time it was lousy, and we wanted to give it a second chance. There is no way that we will ever return and we don't recommend it to anyone. read more

The Wild Dog Grill oversees the nicest work force I've been in contact with in many a year! The attitude these nice people carry is pure "good karma". This alone was refreshing! The setting here represents bar food and drink at its best. Tacos, pizza, burgers, salads head this well curated menu and us four souls jumped in full-bore. My Wild Dog Burger / with skin on fries was very good. Our waitress was having trouble identifying what burger went where as three of us ordered them with different "stuff" and they all looked alike. We sorted it out and we ended up all happy. The fish tacos one of us had were also very good. We all had Tokyo Street Corn that was the hit of our table. The ambiance was comfortable and the noise level was friendly. If or when I ever shoot through Douglas, MI, this will be my first stop! read more

Mixed reviews online should've been enough to dissuade me from trying the Wild Dog, but being a short 1 mile trip down the road I thought I'd give it a shot. The meal started out strong -- a nice restaurant, with a vibrant patio and an attentive and friendly staff. I opted to sit at the bar and ordered some kind of twist on a Moscow mule that had gin in it. Drink was well made and tasted good, seemed like the meal was off to a good start. Upon recommendation, for dinner I ordered the fungi and sausage pizza with a Caesar salad. The Caesar came out first and was not good -- surprisingly it was a little short on flavor with the exception of an overwhelming amount of red onion. I guess I should've read the menu closer, but I've never heard of sliced, raw red onion on a Caesar. Next up, the pizza. Once again, this dish lacked any flavor. For a stone fired pizza, it was surprisingly dull. I could barely taste the sausage or mushroom, I mean it was there but the flavor was it was almost non-existent. They take reservations which is a plus, but you have to guarantee them at $20pp, then they could not find our reservation. Food was ok, but $29 for a gyros plate? We had several pizzas which were also meh, but several small dishes of Parmesan came with a $4.50 charge. A somewhat small bread basket was $12. The Wild Dog in Douglas is one of our go to restaurants while staying in Saugatuck. Given a choice, I recommend sitting outside. The food is both consistent and good and the wait staff is attentive. Meh is the best way to describe this place. We were seated right away and the waitstaff were knowledgeable and friendly. The place is incredibly loud and it wasn't full. I was in a party of five and we couldn't hold a conversation. We resorted to shouting at each other or not talking at all. When the food came, it was all appetizing looking but the food was meh. One person got a burger and it was bland. The pizza was flavorless. The beer was good! Wouldn't recommend this place to someone unless they were satisfied with mediocre. read more

Came here for some drinks with friends. The inside is nice and servers were friendly, but the food wasn't anything to write home about. We got the hummus and a Margherita pizza, and both were just ok. The drinks were way too strong for my liking (tasted like straight alcohol). First off the help was amazing. We had a mature waitress I can say that because we are the same age. What I mean by that is she was seasoned. It's loud in there, but that's the charm and people just enjoying a night out. Met the newer owner his wife is the chef and the food was above average. Kudo's to the new owner as my friends quickly found out there was NO cell service in the place. We had one of the most enjoyable meals we've had in years since they both couldn't be on their phones. Had a reservation for dinner earlier tonight at a place we ate at two months ago with our one year old who was given a high chair on that visit. When we showed up today, we were informed that they don't have high chairs and if we wanted, we could bring a stroller or our own chair. When my wife mentioned we'd recently been there and were given a high chair, she was told they removed them and were discouraging people from bringing babies (something that would have been nice to know before we drove there) due to "bad reviews"; something a quick look at this very Yelp page confirms was an obvious lie. It's nonsensical that anyone would be anti-high chair but are ok with more cumbersome strollers. It strikes me as bad business to alienate families in a popular family travel destination but that's the decision they've made. Unfortunately, we'll never come back to a place whose food we really enjoyed the one time we'd been there a couple months ago. Rude and unfoundedly pretentious seems like a bad business model. There are many better options in the area with good, family friendly service. read more

This is the saddest review I've ever written; especially since it's about a restaurant I have loved for years. The mussels we ordered were inedible (I wish I had taken a picture). The part that bothers me most was when I spoke to the new owner and told him it was a bad experience he was almost rolling his eyes and when I said "you're acting like you don't care" he responded with "we comped 3 items"...he comped 3 items we ordered that we didn't eat and didn't seem to care. Of the restaurants we ate at this weekend, this was our favorite. Both my friend and I ordered the Wild Dog Burger and loved it. It was so tender and a wonderful combination of flavors. The large portion of French fries were also very tasty. We ate outside on the patio which was cozy and well shaded with umbrellas. Definitely a nice place to sit if it's not too hot. Service was good at lunch time and we did not have a wait to sit. I would definitely try this place again and recommend it. read more

Quiet little restaurant on Main Street in Douglas that is dog friendly. The food we got was very good unfortunately the food we didn't get and the follow up, not so much. Ordered a Niçoise Salad, that was a special. Niçoise salads contain hard boiled eggs. When we started to eat we noticed there was no egg. We got the waitress over and she agreed it needed the hard boiled egg. She went and checked with the kitchen and they were out of eggs. She offered another protein and we picked grilled chicken. The waitress was then not seen. Grilled chicken came as everyone was finished. She did bring a Coconut curry soup out, but it was awful. She told us the salad would be taken care of. Taken care of was a $4 discount for not having the main ingredient and not telling us up front they were out of it. She seemed like a nice person but how the salad debacle was handled made the dinner not enjoyable. read more

Our last night of vacation so we wanted something special. Our waitstaff was very kind and recommended a great Cabernet. We each had a salad--mine was the Gem Salad (I got the small and couldn't finish it) and my daughter got the duck confit salad, which she enjoyed. We both wanted steak frites--she ordered hers medium and I ordered mine medium rare. The steaks were both over cooked--both were well done, plus they were charred and the char on the outside tasted like some kind of fuel...weird. We spoke up and they recooked steaks for us. The second round my daughter's was closer to her order but mine was rare--cold and chewy--yet still had that fuel taste. I ate a few pieces and gave up. My preference is to not eat meat on a cutting board with a moat filled with "juice" that kept over flowing onto the table. It was an expensive meal and the wine was great as was our waitress but I probably should have ordered a burger. read more

Went here years ago and loved it. Went back now and it just simply wasn't good. Sat outside on a beautiful night and all the tables/chairs are flimsy cheap plastic. Seemed odd for a place that's fairly classy inside and is trying to sell you on $40 octopus sous vide. The white wine broth with the mussels tasted very strongly of alcohol, like they didn't cook it off. Apple and fennel slaw that came with the ribs was just an unappetizing pile of poorly chopped fennel. No apples to be found. Carbonara was supposed to have some heat but was actually bland to the point where we had to add salt. Presentation was on par with an Applebees. All in all, what was supposed to be a memorable anniversary dinner was just plain disappointing. Spent over $100 (with no dessert, no cocktails, and only one beer) and wished we had gone just about anywhere else. This seems to be the most popular place to go in Douglas and it's really nice on the inside. Cute outdoor seating area, long bar and a decent sized seating area inside. My date got the salad which came with a chicken kabob which was a nice way to serve it. It also came with loads of yummy goat cheese. Quite good. I got the curry that was so spicy it burned the back of my throat. I'm not sure if I just got a bite with curry that hadn't been mixed in all the way or what but it definitely made me uneasy for a while afterwards. read more

They were literally out of 1/2 of the food menu. 1/2 of the drink menu. Couldn't get a 2nd whiskey sour because they were out of eggs somehow? Ran out of fries for their most expensive menu item. bread was very average. No mention of olives in the bread either. Caesar salad was very below average. Steak was very good. Pasta was very average. Meatballs good but lacking flavor. For $113 + tip I would rather spend that money at plenty of other places. Will not be back. Also told them it was our 1 year anniversary and they did nothing to help us celebrate that. read more

One of the favorite restaurants that I visited this past weekend on my trip! Located in downtown Douglas, it was a 5 minute drive from the inn we stayed at. Parking was very easy. We got seated outside right away which was surprising considering it was a Saturday night. Restaurant was clean and patio was very nice. Everything we ordered was delicious & cooked to liking. Calamari was especially fantastic. Additionally we ordered the hummus appetizer which was great as well. For entree, I ordered the mediterranean salad. Super light, fresh, & good portions.
