I got a pulled pork sandwich and it comes with a ton of sauce and slaw to the point there is no way you can even pick this beast up... now if it was good I wouldn't complain, but the meat was so dry that not even the sauce and slaw was enough to make it tastey. The potato salad was average like what you would buy at the store and the baked beans were so hot I burned my tongue, so my guess is microwaved our of a can? I visited this location in the San Diego airport earlier this week. I thought the menu was very extensive and service, both at the counter and when I sat down, was quite good. I spoke to a staff member to get more information on this restaurant and I was told it's a fairly large bbq chain in CA. My entree was huge and I didn't come close to finishing it, unfortunately. The service here is great and the staff is helpful. The rating is focused on the food which overall I thought was ok. The sauce they dose their meats with is super sweet and overpowers the flavor of the meats. The ribs were decent, hot link was my favorite. The tri tip sandwich was very dry. Excellent food and service! Most bbq places only focus on pork ribs but this place is a godsend for having Beef Ribs. I appreciate not feeling left out while everyone else was enjoying their pork spare ribs. The waiters and waitresses that served us made sure we were well taken care of. Phil's BBQ is a delight when you're flying out of United and realize there isn't any other place to get food quickly if you're not into the Pub scene. At the terminal, only these two places had an actual meal that I could eat and stay satisfied for my 5-hour flight to Hawaii. We ordered a chicken sandwich meal with a side of tri-tip. All together, it cost us about $23 and was enough food to feed three people. The best part of it was the side of tri-tip for sure. I wish I had a side of rice to go with it! Potato salad was also a nice side, as Phil's uses a dill mixture rather than an overly plastered mustard mixture that some places do. BEST AIRPORT BBQ BREAKFAST AT 8:00AM I love Phil's BBQ. I used to have friends buy the BBQ sauce from Costco in SD and bring it back for me, that's how much I love Phil's. (Thank you Ryan M!) LOCATION: inside Terminal 2, San Diego International Airport. Hawaiian flies out of Terminal 2. Lucky me! And most importantly, NO LINES! If you've ever been to original Phil's, you know what a nightmare those lines are. BREAKFAST IS SERVED only at this location! There are three other locations in San Diego (Point Loma, San Marcos, and Santee), but they all don't open until 11am. This location opens early enough to order a breakfast burrito before you hop on your flight! I ordered the CALIFORNIA BURRITO BOWL - pulled pork with scrambled eggs, guacamole, and fries. They put some sauce on top, and I added another 8oz after that because I can never get enough of their sauce. It was so good, it knocked me out for the entire 6 hour flight back home. I can't speak for the other items at this airport location, but the breakfast bowl was perfection. BAR is OPEN! If you don't like BBQ, they also have a free standing bar right at the end of the terminal, and it was open in the morning. BBQ sauce and GOOBA dust dry rub! If you know what I'm talkin about, then you know how excited I was to find both the sauce and dry rub sold here. I don't know if the prices are the same as the restaurant but I didn't really care at that point cuz I was taking them all home with me. If you're on the Hawaiian flight 15 to Honolulu, you better hurry back to your gate on the other end of the terminal. Since travelling for the company a few years I've eaten at Phil's BBQ in the airport many times. I've decided it's not good. It did, however, take me a while to come to that conclusion. I've only had breakfast recently, so the lunch and dinner options might be better. I was excited about having Phil's because it's damn tasty BBQ, but after you have it a couple of times, you realize this location serves breakfast burritos that are just a huge mush of sweet and salty. Sadly, there's just not much to it. The people are friendly enough and the food comes out quickly enough. I don't think I've ever actually had warm potatoes even if I eat them right away. We had a late flight out of SD (got there around 7:30pm) and everything was closed in terminal 2 besides a Hudsons and Phils. I have always had shitty restraurant food at airports so wasn't expecting much. To my surprise the pulled pork, ribs and Caesar was great. Ribs were tender and came clean off the bone while the pulled pork had a great smokey after taste. There was one bartender/waiter and he was definitely in the weeds but was super talkative, genuine and helpful letting us try the beers even though I didn't ask to try any while deciding between the local drafts. I've been to this Phils barbecue several times and it never disappoints. The staff are friendly and the orders are pretty quick to be made. It's located in terminal two of the airport near gate 45. It's not my favorite barbecue out there but it is pretty good nevertheless. I love how the coleslaw tastes on top of the pork sandwiches. They offered to put it on the side if you'd like. But if you do decide to put it on top of your sandwich make sure you eat it within 20 to 30 minutes because it'll make the sandwich soggy. Very unique blend of flavors. I always ask for an extra barbecue sauce on the side because for some reason there never seems to be enough barbecue sauce on the sandwich. And for a barbecue place, I need to have plenty of barbecue sauce. The french fries are a little on the burtside but they're very tasty surprisingly. All the menu items are slightly higher than you would find outside the airport but that's to be expected. Also make sure you are hungry because the portions are pretty large. read more

We grabbed a bite here at Phil's since we had time to kill before our flight home. We ordered a baby back rib tickler and a chicken breast sandwich. The tickler came with three bones, cornbread, fries, coleslaw, and two large onion rings. I personally find coleslaw to be a form of punishment, so I was grateful when the cashier gave me the option of substituting for more fries, cornbread, or onion rings. The chicken came with two sides. The pricing was a bit higher than what was listed at their standalone restaurant, but that's to be expected at the airport. The chicken sandwiches take 15 minutes to prepare, so that's something to keep in mind if you're in a rush at the airport. We were given an electronic buzzer to alert us when our order was ready. Time flew while we people watched in the airport so it seemed our food was ready in no time. The portion sizes were huge, and were way more than I could ever consume before getting on a flight. We both enjoyed the flavor of the meats, but the sides were lackluster. The fries had little to no seasoning and we threw the baked beans away after each taking one bite.
