What a lovely little airport place! They have burgers chicken and ribs. I got the ribs and they were very very meaty. Even the four piece was very generous. Was rude when my card didn't work (because the strip?) wanted me to close out in the first minute, and I wanted to order food so I asked him to wait, to which he was mad about. 5 minutes later I got yelled out for FaceTiming a friend with no headphones on... I understand it would be rude if someone was sitting next to me, but there was no one at the bar. Now I've been here for about an hour, and have got to witness how this attitude is transferred to every customer that comes to the bar. First of all, it is airport food so you can't expect high quality BBQ in the San Diego airport. If you go during a time where there are a lot of flights waiting to leave, the place can be busy. They have a full bar and the menu has BBQ. The food wasn't great but it was edible. They give you a pretty big portion. Make sure you get napkins if you take the food onto a plane since it can get messy. Phil's is better than the options you get on an airplane. read more

I have lived in San Diego since Phil's was in a little craftsman house in Mission Hills and Phil himself would personally oversee every detail and greet all the patrons in his restaurant. This airport place has gone downhill over the years and the quality is awful. I had a pulled pork sandwich that tasted like burned charred shoe leather. The next day in the afternoon I got sick. The only silver lining is the bartender working on Tuesday nights, I forgot her name, but she was fabulous and took great care me me. I didn't have the heart to tell her about the food. We went on a Friday for hour happy. The lime wasn't that long and the food came out fast. It has a big dining room with ample seating. You order from the counter than pick up you food when your buzzer goes off. The bar area is full service so you can order food and drinks from servers. All the meats from the chicken to the ribs were really good. I didn't like how they don't have a variety of different bbq sauces like many other bbq places. Just one sauce on that comes on the meat. Don't get the baked potatoes, not worth it. It comes with butter and you must pay each for the cheese and sour cream, which is fine, but when I opened up my potato, there was only a sparkle of cheese and a side of sour cream that was not enough. I didn't like the coleslaw, because I was glad it was Vinegar based and not sweet. The mac salad was surprisingly good, not dry at all. The 2 onions you get with the tickler dinner were good to. Fries were ok. Service could use some work. I noticed that the order taker didn't call us over when he was available and I had to guess if he was open or not. Would be nice if he called us over or made eye contact since there was a line behind us. When we sat in the bar area I noticed the server not making eye contact with us and didn't come by for quite a while. We just wanted to order drinks. I ordered the smoked chicken breast sandwich while my girlfriend had the pulled pork. Really solid bbq spot here. I haven't been to the non airport locations but I go to this Phil's every time I fly United. I arrive early to make sure I can eat before my flight. When I go to terminal 1 the choices are so bad. The BBQ is pretty good and the bread and the fries are above average. Many BBQ the bread is so bland and unmemorable. I've eaten here a half dozen times or so. Nothings changed that yet. This trip the soda machine was broken. I like drinking while I eat and having a soda to go but I won't let that effect my rating. Will have to check out the other Phil's non airport locations soon. Imagine my sadness when I walked up to find out they only serve pork ribs in the airport. Wah wah... Ok, regroup and figure out plan B. It was early morning so guess it's gonna be a burrito. They have their take on the California burrito with pulled pork instead of Carne asada. Alright I'm game, food came out fast and hot! Washed it down with a local lager (don't judge, it was Sat morning). No beef rib but burrito was very tasty and their pulled pork has always been great. Never dry, always soft and moist. I grabbed a spot at their bar and was greeted right away. I ordered a beer from their local craft options (Stone). I also perused their menu, with lots of meat plates, sandwiches, etc. and asked the bartender if I could order pulled pork + slaw a la carte and he said of course. I anticipated small portions of each, although what I was served, within 5-10 minutes, was a large pile of pulled pork, an ample serving of cole slaw, and extra BBQ sauce on the side for good measure. All for only $10... less than my beer! While I typically lower my expectations for airport food, like I do for hotels, weddings, etc., Phil's exceeded my expectations with great service and tasty food. I typically hit the airport lounge, but Covid, staffing, and altered international flight schedules have it closing early these days. In this case, Phil's is not a bad option at all. I paid close to $20 for a small amount of scrambled eggs which were mass produced, three slices of bacon which was not very crispy, a piece of cold corn bread, and a huge amount of fried potatoes. Oh yes, while it was served on a plastic platter covered with a piece of paper, it was "gourmet decorated" with a piece of pineapple and strawberry. I didn't mind the paper towels being used for napkins. The people who waited on me were nice enough. I just expect a little bit more quality on the eggs and bacon. I also thought the cornbread would be hot and perhaps served with some butter to go on it. But it was a sweet cornbread with niblets in it rather than a savory southern style like I am used to. If you compare price paid, I would've done much better at an IHOP or a Denny's. Next time I'll see if I can find a McDonald's as they offer a better breakfast for a heck of a lot less. if I was there for lunch I hear they have great barbecue. The cornbread is addicting, the mac salad is not too mayo-ey which is a good thing. The ribs were very tender and fell off the bone. The sauce was a sweet/tangy sauce which I didn't care much for. This place is convent as it's located in the airport at terminal 2. But that's where the good ends. Food is just ok and priced rather on the high side. I ordered a sausage sandwich with Mac salad and baked beans as a sides. Not much flavor with the sausage. There was coleslaw and something that tasted like a spicy sauce with the sausage. The area is combined with a bar so it was pretty crowded if you're looking for seating as I came here during lunch time. I also ordered boneless ribs which I knew wouldn't taste as good as bone in but we had 15 mins until boarding time and I didn't want my hands all icky from BBQ sauce. It came with baked beans, fries and cornbread. The ribs were a little dry. The beans were tasty but I didn't find them tangy enough. However, the cornbread was good. Super moist! Surprised me for the quality for airport food. I think this was one of the better BBQ place I been. They were generous with the sauce and fries! The fries was mediocre, but the meat was moist... sauce had a little kick to it also. Took 30 minutes to get food, since I ordered a dinner plate at 8AM. I saw the breakfast burrito and it didn't look appetizing. I figured I might as well pay $5 more to get bang for buck. $11 for eggs, potatoes, and little meat didn't make sense. Regardless, the dinner plate is enough to feed for two easily. Wife and I struggled to finish the plate. A lot of the negative reviews here seemed to be about their breakfast, wait time, and something along the lines "I know BBQ food because I'm from this southern state, and this isn't good BBQ." I recommend you give this place a try though, but avoid their breakfast... and plan ahead. read more

Both the chicken and ribs were super tender, personally I thought the BBQ sauce was a bit overpowering and sweet - but the meat was perfectly cooked. I would have also liked it to be a bit hotter as well? I'm not sure if the airport location is just a bit more lackluster than the other spots but both the meats just seemed warm? Perhaps my friends just hyped this chain up a bit too much, but this particular location was not exactly the best BBQ I have had. I was informed by a recording when I attempted placed a phone order last Sunday that for my convenience, "to expedite the process", Phil's is no longer accepting phone calls for takeout. I waited on hold to speak to a manager to learn more, because I wanted to place an order at noon to be picked up at 5:30 in order to return (back to Coronado Island) in time to greet my 6 dinner guests arriving at 6:00 p.m. The manager explained their "system" which doesn't permit ordering by phone in advance. You may only order when you're ready to pick up your order. I asked if I'd have to wait in the customary Phil's line just to order take-out--I needed to know because I had only a narrow time window and would not have time to wait in a long kind and then wait for food prep. I was assured that there would be a manager canvassing the line and taking orders so that by the time I would get to the register, my order would be ready. Sounded reasonable. Upon my arrival at the Phil's line wrapping around the building, another customer (also there for take-out) and I ran towards the queue - with red dots on the sidewalk pointing us in the right direction. After about 10 minutes as the line was inching its way forward, I noticed no manager taking anyone's orders. I asked my running-mate to hold my place in line while I investigated. Turns out, we were in the wrong line. One the opposite side of the building, there was another long queue marked with blue dots where the "people in the know" were lined up for take out. I ran back and grabbed by line buddy from the red dot line and educated him about the blue dot line. We ran together around the building and made a b-line to the back of the blue-dot line. There we waited again, inching forward without anyone taking orders until reaching the front of the line, where after my order was taken, I was finally permitted to enter and pay...and wait in a third line with others waiting for their to go orders. For the uninitiated, during most business hours, there are now TWO lengthy queues that wraps around the Phil's building, so you must plan accordingly. Allow plenty of time! In what universe is this system more convenient or "expedited" than placing and paying for my order by phone at noon and picking up my completed order at 5:30? Also note that Phil's has made a conscience decision not to build out their website to order online (no e-commerce capability) and no interface with a food delivery app that I could see at least). This cluster f#ck of poor execution and poor back of the house workflow automation caused me to be late to my own dinner party. Unhappy! Oh, and the food was great, BTW. Good thing. By the time I got home with it, my guests were starving. read more
