Came here a few weeks ago to fix an old bike of mine. Bought it for $50 out of a garage. Before David, it was a bit unrideable. From messed up headset, brake pads, seat, gear shifter. David recommended lights for the front and back and I got that installed. Total $180. You pay for the service first. When I first walked in at 2pm, he got right to work, examining the bike and listening to my issues with it respectfully. He replaced and fixed it all and I picked it up by 5pm I reluctantly paid for the service but if you have an old bike that needs fixing, just get a new one if you don't hold sentimental value towards it. Took my bike in and they accepted to service on a Saturday around 3pm (needed done for my Sunday morning ride). Adjusted front and rear gears while I waited 15 min. Bad experience. Don't take an old bike here if you're looking for repairs. Walked into this shop browsed and spoke with David, seemed like a nice man I want to support this shop. A week later I came with an older fixie bike and spoke with Phil (older Asian man). Rode fine, but ugly tires and rusty chain. Charged me $129 (maybe this is a normal charge in the industry) for two new tires w/ inner tubes and a bike chain. I thought this was pricey but didn't want to haggle. I paid because I wanted the bike to ride better and I wanted support this guys business as I picked up a new bike riding hobby. A win win! Next day I came in to pick it up, looked nice. Phil said I was good to go... Took it outside shop, literally the first pedal and the chain would not move. Went back into shop. Phil said the rear axel was bad and he said it needed fixing and to come in next week so David could fix (Phil said he was on vacation or something). I told him it was working before... and asked if he could fix today. Said he'd give me a 'deal' at $25.... Told him that doesn't seem right seeing as how this wasn't an issue when I brought it in and he did it for $10. I am $139 in the hole now. I come back later that day. Phil seems upset since this was probably a pain to fix and he didn't make a profit. He shows me what he swapped, said he gave me a really good deal and that repair normally cost $39 or $49. Rode the bike around the block, cool. It works. So today (Saturday) I go for a ride. In about 15min I hear this weird grinding sound. I just thought it was an old crank. I get off the bike, the back wheel is very loose and unstable and moves from side to side.. Not the nut/bolts. I'm not going HAM on this bike or anything, just casually trying to ride. I really don't want to have to visit this spot a 4th time. The bike wasn't horrible, but it certainly wasn't new. I'm not naïve and was not expecting some incredible bike makeover. But I wish he would have really looked at it and told me it's not worth fixing (if that was the case) before taking $140 from me. The positive is I'm learning a lot about how bikes works. I just would advise whomever is looking into bike riding to avoid this shop for repairs. tl;dr: Paid $130 for 2 new tires w/ inner tubes + bike chain. Didn't work. Paid $10 more for him to make my bike move again like before. Rode it for about 15 min, loose back tire. Need to repair it myself thru the power of google :) read more

I ordered a bike on Amazon that claimed to be "easy assembly" but was unable to put the front wheel on. I took it to another bike store in Manhattan Beach, and they weren't able to do it either! Finally I found Phil's, and the guy working there was so helpful. He ended up having to rewire the front and rear breaks, but did it in under 30 mins and it only cost me $30. I'm so thankful to have found this place - honestly, they saved Christmas! What a horrible experience. I commute 12 mile to work on my bike daily . Yesterday (6/27/2018) on my ride home, my front disc caliper snagged a plastic bag, and caused it to drag on my front disc brake - I didn't have my multi tool with me so I googled this place (as it was the nearest in my route). I arrive in the shop at around 5:50p, and DAVID was the man who attended me. I told him the problem (just needed a quick adjust of front caliper), and he proceeded to put my bike on the rack, and make the adjustment. Less than 2 minutes later, he comes back with my bike and CHARGES ME $15 to do the adjustment. Didn't really bother me much (although a normal bike shop would charge less than half the price - as all they literally do is slightly tighten one bolt) as I just wanted to ride my bike home safely. I pay and leave. I get on my bike right outside the shop, and immediately recognized that the problem got worse (front disc was dragging more and now making a horrifying sound - feeling like I was pedaling uphill, towing a wagon behind me). I told him the issue, and he responded with a big "SIGH" as if I did something wrong. He brings it back, and has me test again. Again the problem still wasn't fixed. Adjustment #3 takes place, I test again, and still not fixed. At this point, he proceeds to tell me that he doesn't want to work on my bike anymore because he's closing the shop (mind you, I've only been here for less than 15 minutes at this point, it was barely 6p, and they close at 6:30). I told him that 1) I already paid him to fix this problem so he needs to fix it, and that #2), I have 5 more miles to ride to get home. He took it personal, and told me that he's never going to work on my bike again, to bring my bike to another shop, and literally told me that the problem was that I was being "too picky" (didn't realize that grinding discs was a being to picky). I was pretty much SOL. I asked him if this store had a yelp page, and he lied and said no. I asked for his name, and this time he replied with John. (his real name is David). Needless to say, I'm never going back here. Horrible dishonest customer service, half @ss quality of work, for rip off pricing. For everyone reading this, go to Felixs' bike shop instead. read more

I went there pre covid. I needed a new bike chain. It was pricey but we were gonna go bike riding that day so had it put on my bike. While on the ride the chain came off cause it was too long. Took it back to get adjusted and the owner was so rude. He was upset. He raised his voice at my brother and I and told us that next time he was gonna charge us. Okay so i feel bad rating this man for his work......but.....the negative reviews speak for themselves. OH MY GOODNESS!!!!! I went and took 2 bikes for tubes and he charged me for 4 because it was time. After 1 week the front tire of one of them blows out. I went in and exchanged it. 1 week later.....same tire. I asked the man why? For and extra $5 he says he can put a thicker tube. For the price of the lesser tube it should be already good enough. He really is overpriced. And then. Another 2 weeks later the other tires go out also!!!!! His products are not good for a high price. Then, AFTER I PAID, he said he made some brake adjustment. I didn't ask for it. And then decided to charge me YET AGAIN!!!!! AFTER I PAID WITH A RECEIPT GIVEN TO ME FOR THE TUBE EXCHANGE!!!!! Even my little man told me "lets not come here again". I was looking to buy a used bicycle and since this store was close to my home I thought I would check it out. I walked in a heard someone working in the back so I began looking around. Although, the door chime announced my entry I was looking around for about 4-5 minutes. Then I noticed that someone had come out to the front. I waited again another couple minutes because he appeared to be doing something. I had to literally walk up to him and stand there for a about 30 seconds before he looked up and said "yes". I explained what I was looking for and still received a short and abrupt interaction. Not a place I would do business with because if this is how they treat someone who is a potential customer, how do they treat you once they already have made the sale? Ill update tye review when I get the finished product UPDATED REVIEW So I originally came in because my brake kept hitting my wheel. Seems all this guy had to do was tune the rim or just replace it. He got me for a tune up which was somewhere over 60 bucks if I remember correctly. Tire still hit brakes and seat was readjusted for whatever reason. I've read all the comments and it seems like all of these people are talking about another bike shop. I came in to Phil's to buy a comfortable seat and a laid back seat post for my BMX and he was nothing but helpful. He pulled out like 3 different seats and like 4-5 different seat posts and he even offered to install them for free. I didn't have him install them, because I was going do it myself at home. Dirty? I like to call it more like nostalgic. As for being greeted when you walk in? I wasn't, as a matter of fact, it seemed there was no one working there. This didn't deter me from exploring the variety of new and used bikes around the shop. I, however, wasn't there to shop for a bike. Some car driven by complete jerk moron got to close to me and I ended up crashing my Giant Escape Bike into the side walk (got a bad scrape but I'll be fine). I took the bike in not knowing the place and distrusting him because, well, I work in customer service so when I go any where I expect only the highest quality of service. I called out 2 times and he came out of nowhere and I told him my story. He examined it, and said it would be $18. I didn't have cash so I paid with a debit and after 10 minutes later my bike was running like new again. He came out and made small conversation, mostly about other bikes and how he really loves mine. He shook my hand and said to come back again for a tune up, I asked him for his name and he said Dr. Phil and added that he has been doing this work for more than 30 years and he wanted me to be safer next time. Why I gave him 5 Stars? I came in for a problem, he solved it, not to mention I was serenaded by KUSC as I waited. Also because he wasn't pushy in selling me any other stuff to me. Dr. Phil seems like a genuine guy with the experience, if you don't believe me, look for the Schwinn Bicycle Company awards above the register, some date back to the 70's! read more

I came in to buy a couple of beach cruisers to take around Manhattan. When I got there, there was a nice man (I'm assuming it was the owner) and one guy working in the back. It was pretty quiet and I didn't ever feel like I was being sold something I didn't want. I went to another place the day before just to look and was pushed so hard to buy a bike with every bell and whistle that coming here was pretty refreshing. My son who is disabled saved for a very long time to buy himself a 3 wheeler. He was so happy as it took him quite awhile to get it as he is on a fixed income. He also paid to have it put together. The chain came off the first time he rode it, took it back and they wanted money to fix it. IT HAD ONLY BEEN 1 DAY. Tried riding it again, chain off again and the brakes stopped working. A long story short 3 times and the bike still can't be ridden. My husband is looking into fixing it for him. I believe they took advantage of him and his disability. I simply requested air for my bicycle tires and when it was time to pay $2 ($1 for each tire JUST FOR AIR!) owner/manager of Phil's Bike Shop displayed a disgust attitude due to the fact I was paying for his service with a "debit card" and not cash! His problem was that he gets charged more when using the debit card machine for such a small money amount. In my book, that is not any customer's problem but his.. I was simply PAYING for his service (I was not requesting a free service) and yet, I received a terrible experience just because it seemed my fault for not having cash. Wow! NEVER will recommend nor will visit his bike shop! There are plenty businesses with open arms and smiles and great attitudes waiting for my business.
