I love that there's a 'how to order' section on the menu, and the baristas are fantastic--they give great recommendations and ask you to try your drink before you leave. Philz is a lovely establishment! They have a creative variety for those looking to try flavors outside of the norm or if you're feeling the original blends, they also have that available as well. There is truly something for everyone and our group alone all got a wide range of different drinks to try! I opted for the iced coffee rose! I'm an iced coffee girlie that loves fragrant drinks and the rose was perfect. It had those notes of rose that came through on the tail end of the sips for a very delicious and creamy drink! The staff was wonderful and working their fingers off due to the massive popularity of Philz! This is a better suited spot for folks that have some time to wait in line, because there will be a line VS someone taking a quick break. I love Phil'z Coffee and I was so excited to hear and see that they opened one in town recently. So no more driving to San Ramon to fix my craving of a nice iced mint mojito. This past Sunday afternoon my bf and I decided to grab coffee. We didn't have to wait too long in line to order. Maybe a good 10 mins. It was very unclear of where to line up. Once we ordered our drinks the line got even longer. The store got crowded quick and there isn't much space since so many customers were waiting prior. It did take a good 25 mins to receive our order. They had 4 baristas working and so many orders kept printing and there is only one cashier manning the register and baked goods items. I understand that they just opened and are still working out the rhythm and techniques. I do wish they would have some garbage cans, napkins and straws available for customers. Also signage (above) to navigate customers as where to stand to order, pick up, and mobile orders. I'll probably come back in a few months when things settle in and they have a smooth groove of making sure customers are not waiting over 30 mins for their nice cup of coffee. read more

I placed my order online at 11:50 am today, 11/15. Promised time was 12:10pm. I arrived at the store at 12:15 pm, order was not ready. I was told that it would take a few more minutes. Gladly waited, order was finally ready at 12:47pm. Really Philz? Had to wait over 30 minutes for my order? The app said my order was ready at 12:10 but that's definitely false. I think the staff is great. I'd skip ordering through the Philz website though. They don't seem to have it integrated well. I showed up at the time the website told me to. Didn't see my order in the ready area, waited, and ultimately had to have staff find the order. It was made almost instantly (which is great!) but then it sat there so long that they had moved it by the time I got there. Again, that was the time the website told me to. It was also made incorrectly....and not packaged well so it leaked. :-( read more

Please save yourself from this location and go literally to any other Philz where I've never had rudeness be an issue before. I wrote an email directly to Philz corporate stating the below: "I ordered a small Philharmonic from this location on 9/1/2024 at 11:39am and got to the store at 11:44am waiting for the drink. The barista by the name of Molly looked at me and rolled her eyes with attitude. She then proceeded to glance over at me and talk about me to her coworkers next to her! Her attitude was total mean girl behavior and I felt like this is extremely unprofessional and rude. There was no reason for her to treat me that way as all I did was ask her if she had my drink ready which said it was at 11:45am and I had asked at 11:48am. I didn't know who the barista was and I feel very upset about this situation because it's just plain mean girl behavior. " I've been going to Philz for a decade and have never ever encountered this type of behavior in Berkeley, Sacramento, San Jose, or San Ramon but just wow in my own hometown.... Hopefully Molly gets an attitude check because someone like her does not deserve to work a service job much less any job if she's going to treat people like that. Beautiful store with a large patio. They repurposed an old gas station and I loved the vibe. I had the iced vanilla soul which was their fall drink - vanilla pour over with cinnamon. It was good! Since I read it was a fall drink, I assumed it came with pumpkin but that was my mistake. It's a vanilla pour over with cinnamon. Service was quick and friendly. This location is an awesome addition to the CV blvd. The corner is bright and clean inside. Philz coffee is definitely different in that they do not do espresso drinks. BUT, with that said, their coffees are really good. The staff is extremely nice and helpful. My main issue is that the time it takes to actually GET that cup of coffee is excruciatingly long. I laugh when people write "it's a little bit of a wait"... I say, it's best that you go to the app, and order about 30 minutes before you want to arrive to pick up your order. read more

High volume store! So much foot traffic. So a little bit of a wait is expected but I love this place. The workers are so cheerful -- I was careful not to use happy cause I'm not sure hah but they are very nice and full of positive energy here. Every time I come, the workers are always gracious and tell me, "Please take a sip and let us know if it's perfect for you" or something along those lines. That goes a long way, feels that they care. There are a LOT of people that come in and out so it is definitely expected to have a bit of a wait. I usually get my drink in about 4-5 minutes on a light traffic day or upwards of 15+ on a very busy day. Each drink is crafted wonderfully, delicious -- Despite the wait time, my drink comes out tasted consistent every time. Mocha Tesora will always have my heart. And those drinks are relatively strong. I wonder if I can ask for an extra shot of espresso or something. The strong hint of mocha masks my coffee and feels nostalgic of my childhood. Honey Haze is a good contender for next favorite. Also never thought to put honey in my coffee (although I've seen honey packets at other establishments, I always thought it was for the food). Overall, my favorite coffee place that I enjoy doing work at. Please be patient, they are going as fast as they can. read more

There was only 1 customer ahead of me at the counter and my drink took more than 20 mins I have to go ask the lady if my name was on the list and she said they are doing Mobile orders first!!! I had to tell her I HAVE A BaBY in the Car with my husband and they're just driving around since there's really no parking that day. That wasn't a very good experience. First an foremost the aesthetic of the place is amazing. The retro drive in look is incredible. Service is ok, very friendly when talked too but very.... distant otherwise. I don't know how to word it but it felt like they were annoyed to have to help but they also were very eager to help. The drink I've ordered multiple times now is a Vanilla Date Delight, which was recommended to be a medium by the barista. It's probaly the only reason I keep coming here. I have no complaints about anything else. Just a warning, this spot is a vibe, hipster kids and college people doing schoolwork and sometimes up and coming business partners with zoom meetings or over the phone interviews. Not an isolated experience either, each time I've come here thats what I've experienced. Was waiting quite a few months since plans were announced for a Philz to open in Castro Valley, and now it is finally officially opened as of 11/22/2023 (well they had a soft opening 11/21/2023)! Super excited as this location is smack in CV downtown (10 min walking distance from my house), and who doesn't like Philz?! I know I know there's been some clamoring here and there about why CV needs another coffee place, since there's a Starbucks and Peet's in a quarter mile proximity of this new Philz, but hey folks need that variety! Exterior is this retro garage/gas station prop (maybe it was historically one...sorry I don't know my CV history too well) with retro rounded edge design (like the 50s-60s). Nice a clean with ample of waiting area for folks to hang out and mingle before picking up their order (or chill a bit after picking up their order). Interior is as expected to be nice a clean with modern finishes/touches. This location's interior I feel has even more space than the next closest Philz in San Ramon's City Center Bishop Ranch mall, as the long line for ordering with about 25-30 people wrapped around like that Nokia snake game but still didn't feel cramped. The ample floor space also allowed for two main dine-in areas (area facing Castro Valley Blvd with couches probably sit between 10-12; area facing Wilbeam Ave. can sit between 12-14). There's also a long bench sandwiched between the main order line and order pickup area that can sit 4-6 as well. All-in-all, plenty of space. There's also this retro gasoline fillup station prop that's pretty cool near the main entrance, so a nice picture spot if you want to do it for the gram! Quality of the drinks and food (got a Philtered Soul for myself, Coffee Rose for the wife, and a burrito) were as expected at excellent Philz standard. Wait time was long at 30 minutes, but that's as expected probably for the first week or two mainly due to tons of people wanting to try a new business in town, so give the excellent staff a bit of grace. I'm expecting wait times to be at normal Philz standard (5-10 min) when things settle. Keep up that energy and spirit and quality new CV Philz and Staff!! read more

I don't want the coffee In a paper cup cuz they are lined with plastic. So I bring my own coffee cup. Microplastics in the coffee if you use a paper cup. I specifically asked the cashier if the coffee will be made in a plastic cup/container. I was told no. But upon asking the a two individuals who are making the coffee told me the make the coffee in a plastic cup and the stainless steel containers are not to be used to a cup of coffee. I am aware of the dangers of microplastics in our diets and the damages they can cause. I asked for a refund and - why can you provide me with a receipt to prove the refund? This a complaint I need to take up with my credit card company. FYI I didn't say this was for environmental reasons- you might want to re- read what I wrote. And why should I blindly call a support group/team. Just make coffee without using plastic. FYI paper cups are lined with plastic- and also you make the coffee in a plastic cup. I think it could be done in a better way but your shop didn't so I left. Some people are in the know what microplastics do to the human body and some don't. It's no big deal- there are coffee shops who do it differently and I found two places. I just had to ask. read more

My friends wanted to get coffee after our workout, and I was hungry, so we decided to try the Philz coffee at Castro Valley. I believe this spot is still pretty new. It's pretty big for a coffee shop. They have a lot of seating inside the place, from chairs to a couch. On the outside, they have three tables and chairs, but it's very open as it looks empty because it only has three tables. They also play some nice music inside, but I guess if you're trying to do some work in there, it could be considered loud. I ordered two burritos: the green chile and bacon and eggs. Both burritos come with hot sauces. The green chile was pretty basic; it was just eggs and potatoes with some chile. For this one, I definitely needed the hot sauce to put some flavor in it. For the bacon&eggs it was delicious. I could taste the bacon and the cheese they used. This one is my favorite! The only bad thing with both burritos was the tortilla. They were a little stiff as if they were overheated or something. They also had a variety of bakery if you aren't craving something too heavy and want something sweet instead. The service was pretty good. I took my order without any problem and got it pretty quickly. There were many people there but no line; I guess everyone was either hanging around or waiting for their food. Overall, I give this place three stars out of five stars. There were good vibes and services, and the food was not too bad. I'd come back here next time to try their coffee. read more
