Always been a Philz lover and super excited to have a Philz in Castro Valley. We went on the opening week and the line was out the door. We did place a mobile order before we left and planned around the time so we got it instantly when we got in. The drink was great for an opening week. I am very picky and they did a far better job than San Ramon when they first opened. Expect a long line for a few months or download the mobile app and order ahead. For people who are complaining about the long wait, just plan ahead and order via mobile app in advance. Or if you want to go be in line, just enjoy the ambiance and how popular Philz is. The shop has a charming retro exterior, and since it's right next to my favorite grocery store, I'm always stopping by for my current obsession: a small Philtered Soul Cold Brew, sweet and creamy. My only wish is for a bit more consistency--about 1 in 3 times, the drink varies, sometimes too sweet, not sweet enough, or not creamy, and occasionally the cold brew tastes a little chalky. I'm leaving this as my last review for Philz in CV. After being open a few months, they have put the efforts into making things better. They have picked up the speed they make drinks, and while I never experienced it myself, I've seen the complaints about staff being rude, but that seems to have been handled too. I appreciate how nice everyone is. At the same time, the consistently and quality still suffers. I got to the point where I only order small coffees now, as they are reliably inconsistent. From a Tesora to my favorite Philharmonic, literally every day it's a crap shoot what it'll taste like. One day it'll come iced, the next day without the sugar and mint, or it'll be all sugar and cardamon. It's predictably and consistently inconsistent, and this makes me sad. But the staff in San Ramon was kind and showed me how to make my drinks, so I've ordered the stuff to make these at home now read more

This place is hit or miss but has been mostly misses for me. I've been drinking Philz since it was in the mission and maybe because this location is new but the quality and the time it takes to pick up coffee is nuts! For example, the app will say pick up in 10-15 mins. I get there later than the pick up time and my coffee still isn't ready. Which is ok, I know they're busy but then I also got food on top of my coffee and the food takes an additional 15-20 mins and that's after me chasing down the barista multiple times. They have the girl who is doing the register also doing the food and she can't keep up. Last frustrating part, my breakfast burrito was ice cold in the middle when I got home. I've also ordered a bagel before and the thing was hard as a rock and I could prob throw it against a wall and it wouldn't break. The coffee quality also really depends on the barista. I've had ONE good cup of coffee from here and I believe her name was Myha? Sorry I butchered her name but her coffee was awesome. Most of the cups of coffee I get now are watered down messes. What happened!? You used to be the strongest coffee in town! Hopefully this location will continue to get better since I live really close by but I might have to get my fixes from another location until then. read more

While I understand they're still in the hype phase, it was ridiculous how long my coffee & sandwich took despite ordering online. My friend ordered in store and hers came before mine which was odd. I know they were pretty busy but maybe the order system wasn't up to par. For some reason, the app told me the drink was ready so I came up to the baristas and it wasn't. I didn't mean to bug them either lol so I felt bad. About 15-20 min later from then my drink finally came but they forgot my plant based sandwich, which they ran out of & I was given other options. They refunded this which was a nice gesture. I was pretty disappointed on the app situation but next time I'll just order in-store :) Opening during the holiday season is not for the weak. What's the point of putting in an online order when it's NEVER ready on time. I work in Fremont and any time I submit an online order it's ready by the time I get there. Now the one in Castro valley (closer to home) can never get it together. Today I waited 10 minutes over my given time to pick up for a TOASTED damn bagel. I literally watched the lady keep helping others while my ticket sat waiting. The lady who made my coffee too (Angela was the name on the cup)didn't even greet me, I bought 4 coffees and she didn't even ask if it's good, meanwhile all the other Philz I've been to has asked. We have never come to a Philz Coffee before, menu was confusing but she explained everything and suggested I try the Mocha Tesora Philz way. Came on a Monday morning around 10am and ordered in person at the coffee shop. There were around 6 people in front of me but a bunch of people waiting for their mobile orders. The person in front of me stood in line until only one more person was in front of her and she got out of the line as she had placed a mobile order instead, thinking it'll be faster. Well guess again. I got my order before she did. So, the point is that mobile order will not mean it'll be faster as they aren't making coffee based on time the order was placed between mobile and waiting in line to order. Just FYI. Oh and the coffee I got was the Winter Bliss. It was amazing!!!! And I also realized that I got charged for food tax when I ordered in person as opposed to ordering from mobile app. Lesson learned! read more

Sidenote: This is based off my first Philz visit with a family of 4 on Sunday at 11 a.m. Simply put, it was the worst café experience I've had in my lifetime...I'm in my 40s and have been to cafes worldwide, this was the worst of the worst. I love a good cafe, the ambience, the people, the service...This sucked. They, Philz, must change this, it flat out sucked, borderline unbearable/definitely would never visit again. My family waiting 45 minutes from some hot chocolate and 2 coffees...Bro, this isn't a 5 star restaurant, it's a freaking café. That was, UNBEARABLE. 45 MINUTES FOR A CUP OF FREAKING COFFEE!!!!!!! As an experience, I'd rather go to the dentist WITH tooth pain not knowing what awaits me. HOWEVER!!! They do salvage one star as the coffee was, indeed, really good. I just don't think it should be open as a café, it should just be a order by app/pick up place. That visit was like prison....horrific. Don't go there. Flat out sucked. read more

Let me start off by saying I love Philz, I've never had issues with any of their other locations. Having said that, I understand they just opened so it's busy. Sent the hubs to pick up some coffee and pastries and he said line was out the door - to be expected. Mobile pick up line was just as long as the regular line. Ordered small mint mojito but received a large, not something to complain about but it barely had a splash of oat milk in it and was not sweet like the hubs ordered. I would have rather had the small but made correctly. Also got a breakfast sando which was left in the toaster too long, it was very hard and burnt. They did have a vegan pumpkin bread that I liked. We came on their third day of opening (black Friday) at around 11:30am and the line was out the door. It took us 1 hour to get in and out. About 40 mins to get to the front of the line to order and another 20 mins to get our one drink. Be prepared to wait in line since they just opened! It seems like some coffee baristas were a lot slower to making orders than others. Otherwise. The space is nice! There's seating all around with outlets. Everyone is friendly! I have loved Philz for years so I'm super excited to have it in Castro Valley. They did a nice job with the decor and the servers were awesome. The line was long but it's expected since it's new and everyone is trying it out. But if they continue to stay busy, Philz needs to hire a few more workers for sure. My only complaint is with the pastries. Not that they are bad, but they are kept in the open on the counter with a piece of glass separated it from customers ordering...not in a case. On the day I went there were flies inside so I'm sure the flies were on the pastries....YUCK! I hope management reads this review and build a glass case for their pastries. read more

I've lowered my rating as half the time I try to mobile order they are closed for ordering, which never seems to reopen if it's closed in the morning. This completely prevents me from going to Philz. I'm not sure why they'd close it if they could have it open with how busy they were opening day. So happy to finally have a Philz nearby! I only went on opening day so it was pretty busy, but everyone seemed nice & attentive. Location is very convenient. Plenty of parking nearby, including street & private parking lot behind the building. Good vegan options, including Pumpkin bread & Breakfast sandwich. They only have oat milk as a milk substitution. I only online order for Philz. Use the app, you don't need to preload money onto it unlike many other competitors so you're not spending more than you need to. Yes, Philz can take a while. It's customizable pour over coffee, it's not a quick process. If you're in a rush, order on the app & set the time for 5-10mins before you plan to actually get there. They do toss anything sitting longer for 30 mins so make sure you're arriving in a timely manner. Store was clean & well lit, also very spacious. Great for a date or to get some work done. Some issues I have with Philz (as a company, so doesn't affect my rating of the store): Calorie Chart online is never updated, No Almond Milk, Not a great ratio of vegan to omni pastries. read more
