HORRIFIC - I have never been to a Philz coffee before but I had always heard great things. I pass one on my way to work every day but never thought to stop. I had just gotten out of the hospital and had not had anything to eat in nearly 36 hours because of it. So I was so hungry and thirsty and I thought that a mild tea would hit the spot. The tea was good but the way my husband and I were treated by the ENTIRE staff was ENTIRELY shameful. We walked in at around 1215pm, expecting a line but alas there wasn't one! I felt so lucky as I had expected it to be grand central at that hour on a Tuesday. But there was only one lady sitting on a bench and she appeared to be waiting for her order. We didn't know where to go so we just kinda looked around not knowing what to do who to talk to. So finally after looking around for a bit, we found the cue where you wait for someone to greet you I suppose. There were at least 6 persons that I could see who were working this location so I thought maybe there was something else going on that made everyone look so busy. Still we waited and waited then finally a girl flatly calls us over and asks if we're ready. No hello, welcome, do you have any questions? Nothing. We both placed our orders but even though I wasn't asked if I needed help, I still had questions and I needed them answered. The girl at the register appeared to care less about what I was saying. She rolled her eyes at me no less than 3 TIMES - . Her body language, tone, demeanor all told us were were not welcome and how quickly can we get these guys outta here. Not only that, but there was a woman making the drinks to the cashiers right whos job got much louder to do all of a sudden when we went to order. Why would that be?? In addition, there was a much taller woman in a red shirt who was eating and walking next to where food and drinks were being prepared, and I know for a fact that it is a violation of the health code to do that. She was eating a muffin or something and then handling drinks and such on the line. GROSS !!! So then we decided to wait over near the other registers and there were two girls over there at separate registers and again we get the cold, lifeless stare as if we were monsters. WTF. But I had to ask for a business card and the girl that helped me got me one and then immediately started to rattle off who was in charge (all of them) and what their jobs were. I never asked for this information...why would she feel compelled to do that? Makes you wonder. Finally we get the drinks and went quickly next door to Earl of Which, where we were treated very very nicely and we very very much enjoyed our sandwiches. We threw the coffee out. No thanks Phil. Yes, this is a shameless local-boosting-local-business review. I don't really care to quibble over the service and discuss whether or not they kissed my ass. Everyone was perfectly cordial both times I stopped by. I feel BLESSED to have a Philz within walking distance and no longer have to commute to HB to buy my coffee lovers gifts! This location gets 5 stars for just being Philz and being close. Philz is awesome. Ether is awesome. While I don't want to see them topple Starbucks and lose what makes them so good, I also hope they help people see a world outside Starbucks. read more

"Ugh! I've got to take you to Philz, save you from any more embarrassment, seriously," a buddy of mine condescends, glaring down with disgust at my 7-11, pre-ground "exclusive" blend, a $2.09 roast he's watched me enjoy (to his complete horror) for years. "It's becoming ridiculous. I mean, you really have no idea, do you?" I don't, I guess. So I give in. I drive. Let me preface by saying that I am by no means an aficionado when it comes to coffee. Quite honestly, I know nothing at all about coffee, except for the fact that it smells great in the morning, and I like hazelnut cream. Suffice it to say, I'm a bit unsuited when it comes to stumbling into specialty coffeehouses, coffee shops, and cafés. They confuse me. I feel like a bother, stammering my order while scanning haphazardly the wall-hung menus strung along with items I'm not only entirely unfamiliar with, but am uncertain I'm even pronouncing correctly: espresso, macchiato, ristretto, cappuccino, affogato.... (wtf?) Anyway, I'm here, at Philz. And while I worry a little, I find that I shouldn't. No one's smug. Here, everyone's nice. In fact, after I'd let the barista know that I'm a noob (as if she couldn't tell), she'd said that many who come to Philz for the first time try a Tesora. Caramel-ly, nutty, buttery. She was nice. And while I am not usually the one who spends a lot on coffee, my Tesora was great! We even sat outside for a bit, enjoyed the morning watching people stroll by along 2nd, my looking down upon those who know a whole lot less. read more

DeNia at Philz Long Beach made both my drinks incorrectly. When she called out our orders she had an attitude & said "I have a mocha...& other things." I ordered a Cinnamon Toast Crunch & she didn't even remember (obviously, it was made incorrectly). I went back in to have my mocha Tesoro made sweeter & she didn't even care or apologize. I'm a loyal Philz customer for over 5 years, so this is surprising & I'm very disappointed. read more

It was a terrific experience, but the coffee was only 'good'. I would return, as it was probably a one-off less than 5-star experience. I suspect it's a five-star place. Went to get a coffee for the first time here since my aunt always said they have the best coffee. Let me tell you she was right I got the iced mocha tesora 16oz. I've always heard everyone rave about Philz Coffee and I finally got to try it yesterday after dropping some family off at LGB. It's about a 15 min drive from LGB and we managed to get lucky and find street parking a block away from Philz. It looked crowded when we walked in but the line moved pretty quickly. Our barista wasn't the friendliest, mumbled, and seemed pretty annoyed that we were there. Same with the cashier which is why the 3 star review. Other than that, the drinks were really good and I can see what the hype is all about. My bf ordered the Mint Mojito which apparently is one of their most popular drinks and I went with the Philtered Soul. I tried both and while Philtered Soul was pretty good, the Mint Mojito was definitely a little bit sweeter and more refreshing. Great coffee but they could step it up with the service. It annoys me when service gets sacrificed and ignored just because the product is good. If you can easily find parking and you're in Long Beach, it's worth trying it out. Otherwise, I'd probably go find a different Philz location and hopefully the baristas there are nicer and actually want to be there. read more

Philz Coffee is good. I've had them in SF and happy to have had them in Santa Monica and in DTLA. My family tried it and they were happy. My friend stayed in the cafe to study a good amount of time. It's at a nice location to walk around, snack, and/or dine at. It has a good amount of space, though they devote a good amount of space to their concept. Basically, Philz has you go up to a barista, your own, and you pay, and then you get to try it to make sure you like it. There's space for you to sit or stand and wait. They're pretty friendly. As a patron of Peet's for years. I was devastated when then closed. I was told Philz was a good place for coffee and tea. The problems: 1. Extremely mediocre: I waited nearly 20 minutes to order a simple mocha and then another 5 minutes to pay. 2. Extremely overpriced for mediocre quality. Seriously $6.00 for a mocha? Seriously? 3. Tea selection is extremely mediocre and not organic loose leaf. The barrister knew absolutely nothing about tea, brewing temps, types of tea etc. which is why I went with a mocha. 4. Pastries are mediocre. It is nice however to see a few vegan items. 5. Coffee too acidic. Must be a lower grade. as I have never had a stomach ache after drinking one cup of coffee. WHAT TO DO: I suggest POLLY'S. There I can get a loose leaf delicious tea, served quickly and with a smile (no attitude like Philz) and every morning all their muffins/pastries are baked THERE in the back .. fresh. And I could get a large cup of tea and hot muffin for 4 bucks compared to it being nearly 9 bucks for crap at Philz. Not amused. I won't be back. read more

Came here a few minutes ago with my friend and her dog. Awesome service from all the staff!! They were friendly and approachable. They offered us dog treats for the pup while we waited, he loved that. Anyways, while waiting for our order, a family of three came in without mask. Not a big deal, the staff offered mask to them but they continued to refuse. The staff attempted several times to work with the family while following COVID guidelines for those customers in the store. However, the family all continued to say they will not wear mask and rudely attempted to tell the staff their order while she explained the COVID policies. I believe the staffs name was Kaitlyn that handled the situation calmly. Kaitlyn handled the situation like a champ and kept her cool even after the lady took her photo and stormed off. The reality is nobody wants to wear a mask but currently those are the circumstances... that doesn't give anyone the right to be negative to someone doing their job. Again, Kaitlyn good job dealing with the situation and I will definitely be returning because the staff were professional and keeping in mind the safety of their customers. Anyways we are hoping the mornings staff continue to have a fabulous day after this morning incident dealing with family of 3. Very disappointed actually it's 6:50 Am , I'm sure they know this is the hour where people want their coffee before work, I had been dying to have their coffee . I was waiting in line for 6 min with one person in front of me . 3 people working 1 taking care of mobile orders 1 cutting bagels ... (no one is ordering any- what happened to providing for business needs) 3 making coffee . So really 1 person is only making coffee .. 6 min in line and still would have been waiting I ended up walking off. I understand pour overs have a while, but come on have more of a staff . When Peet's, a very good source for coffee, Left Belmont Shore recently, Philz was mentioned as a factor. So yesterday I was in the neighborhood and stopped in. Nice, coffee-house atmosphere, and not as many old farts (like me) who seem to inhabit such places, especially early in the morning. There were I think five offerings, with descriptions, of brewed. I sort of had to guess but went for "Ether", small. Now, my wife and I brew coffee every day that many would find strong. We use 20 or 23 grams for two cups, drip, hand-ground, depending on the particular beans. Philz literally grinds beans as you watch, then brews them as a pour over with filter. An excellent way to produce a good cup of coffee. This was about 4:00 in the afternoon. By the time I had drunk about one-fifth of the cup, I had to recognize that if I drank any more I would not sleep again until the weekend. The coffee was just too strong for my tastes. And at nearly five dollars for a small cup, I don't see that I will be back, especially since another visit will almost always be in the pm, when I couldn't drink their brew. On the good side, the 4/5 of a cup that was left was fine the next morning, with cream and sugar. read more

5 stars for the coffee: Julie's Ultimate with cream = simply the best coffee I've had in all my 60 years. The ginger-date cookie was also incredibly delicious (and I'm a baker). -1 star: Bathroom was a mess. Trash (including an empty water bottle!) all over the floor. Even: Almost lost a star for customer service. First time I went, though it was not particularly busy, we were all but barked at by the baristas: Stay behind the line! Wait until you're called! Not particularly welcoming for a newbie... The second time, I skipped the bathroom, and the Sunday baristas were terrific - specifically, the lovely young black woman (so kind!) and the tall blond guy (who went beyond the extra mile to ensure my ginger-date cookie would survive my flight back to Chicago - not a crack!). read more

The store itself is comfortable and has some seating. It is not my vibe for a coffee house to sit and do work but you certainly could. Just not a lot of seating. I was looking forward to Philz opening in Belmont Shore since I've visited their other locations in Southern CA. I ordered the popular mint mojito which was smooth and creamy. No bitter coffee taste. However I got my son a chocolate chip cookie from the bakery case. He had a piece and I bit into the cookie only to bite into a big piece of cardboard paper (see my pics). It was weird because the paper was on the inside of the cookie. I'm glad I ate it and my 2-year old didn't ingest it. I also have a pic of my bag and tissue so I know for a fact that I didn't accidentally rip a piece of my bag or something. In my pic you can see the fibers of the paper...it's not just burnt sugar! I might return for coffee but definitely not anything else. My first experience at this location has really turned me off from going again. read more

Service here is so friendly and quick! They're so welcoming, and not just because it's the soft opening but in general, all philz coffee have great customer service. One of the workers suggested philtered soul with cream and sweetened. They'll ask you if you want it mild sweetness, medium sweetness or a lot of sweetness. I got medium sweetness and it was perfect. Still has the coffee taste. Philtered Soul has a hint of hazelnut flavor and chocolate. Another favorite of mine is mint monjito and it comes as an iced drink. You can order it hot but who wants a mint mojito hot??! They make Mint and coffee taste so good. It's a sweet drink with cream. Not sure which coffee they have in it. I love the ginger snap also. It has a hint of cinnamon, cream, and sweetness to it. We also tried Jacobs wonderbar (dark chocolate, smoke, nut flavors). Any of these you can alter the sweetness of it. they also offered samples of their pastries and sandwiches. Their pastries aren't sweet at all. Pairs well with the sweetness of the drinks. Yeah so this place hasn't changed much since opening. This place has good coffee. Only drip coffee and you really can't get anything like it anywhere else. Staffs always been pretentious so don't expect a friendly staff. Study the menu before going in, or get attitude for trying to decide what you want. They always change how they take orders, and then give you dirty looks because you're unfamiliar with their weird process. And reviews won't change the overall staff and environment in there. It's pretentious to say the least, over flavored drip coffee. It's not that serious. Manager may reply to reviews but don't expect it to do much. Coffee is great, service is dog water. Not even San Francisco or Seattle has this pompous of service. Uninviting, but definitely will be back for more. read more

With that being said, I would almost give the customer service a pass due to 'rona,' but if you are going to be rude to all of your customers make sure you keep the eye rolls to a minimum. Nonetheless, the iced mint tea that I had was just ok. I can't rave about it, nor can I say that it was anything worthwhile or that would draw a second visit. The really tall guy with the backwards hat making the coffees had a serious attitude problem. I asked for my coffee really sweet and with a lot of creamer, when I received it, it tasted black, so I asked him if he would pour some out and add more creamer, in which he replies "I already added a lot but ok" and then proceeds to give me and my girlfriend a dirty look. Morgan makes the absolutely BEST coffee at this Philz location- unlike any other Philz location I have ever tried! I'm not sure what it is but the ratio of cream/sweetener mixed in with the coffee is absolutely amazing! I love Philz and was soooo excited they opened one in Long Beach. We used to drive all the way down to Huntington Beach to get Philz every weekend. I did not realize coffee could taste this good. If you like good coffee, you need to come here. They don't do espresso drinks, just amazing coffee, but trust the process, ask for their recommendations, and try it. If you're a coffee snob, like we are, this is the place for you. Also, delicious bagels and avocado toast. I come here at least once a week. Had Philz coffee today for the first time and I was impressed. As an avid Starbucks junkie I know I am bias but the coffee at Philz was good. The menu is different but I'll definitely have to explore it further. I got the iced mint mijito and it was super tasty. Love the atmosphere on a Sunday night. It's around 7 and there a few students hitting the books. They have free WiFi and their connectivity is strong around this hour. I never been here before yet the service is excellent and the barista knew what to suggest for myself and my kids. By the way, I'm was happy to know that they offered a few drinks for my kids who suffer from many food allergies. I would definitely come back again for the "dancing water" a light blend coffee with milk chocolate, grains, and cashew notes. I had placed a mobile order and when she placed a coffee that looked like the one I ordered on the bar, I grabbed the cup to turn it to see if my name was on it.
