Two charging stops into our Los Angeles to Oakhurst (Yosemite) road trip, we came to the realization that we were not making it into Oakhurst for dinner before the restaurants in the city closed and our dinner plans were in the hands of his Tesla's map search function and we came across this place. In a plaza with three other Pho restaurants, this one managed to have reviews significantly above the other two, so we decided to give it a try. Ordered two of the standard #1 Phos and Spring Rolls. Large and generous portions at very reasonable prices. The bowls were loaded with meat and of a quality a step above even some Los Angeles places I've been to. The brisket was especially great. good size portion for reasonable prices. the pho was flavorful but I can tell the rice noodles still had a starchy taste to them. I wish they had a spicier chili oil but overall it was pretty good, especially because they give you large portions and don't skimp on the meat. My husband and I really enjoy this pho spot. Don't be fooled by the looks because the food tastes delicious and pretty consistent. I decided to try the bun bo hue and let me tell you... I've been looking for a good bun bo hue in fresno. A tad bit oily but so flavorful! The pho broth is good too. They're very generous with the meats and the portions are bigger than average. 4/14/23 Getting lunch! Two chicken Pho, shrimp spring rolls with an extra peanut sauce ordered. The worker was a little difficult in getting the order, but hoping it's right. He even hung up right up after taking the order without getting a name or giving a time when it would be ready. Strange. Fingers crossed! I went in to get it. FYI! Cash only and he didn't say so, but of course they have an ATM in there where they take another deduction. Not right. The restaurant is large. Open. Clean and safe. They have a picture of Marilyn Monroe on the wall and that was different. The last thing I'd expect to see in a Vietnamese restaurant. Oh well! Lunchtime! I got it ready. They didn't include an extra peanut sauce like asked. =( Luckily, the chicken pho was pretty good! They include hot sauce to spice it up and make it better. Good amount of chicken, fresh jalapeños and sprouts. Really good how it is easily set up to put it all together separately. The shrimp spring rolls were small from what I've had before, but still good. Only 2 little shrimp in each roll. Really good peanut sauce. That is separated as well from the nuts. This place was empty during lunch time. The waitress didn't know the menu that well. I gave her my orders, which was only a large pho and a Pepsi. My sister and her daughter got their pho first. I was waiting for my pho and finally ask one of the guy about my food. He told me there was no order for another pho. The guy was nice and told me it will take 5 minutes. I went to tell the owner of this restaurant to cancel my order and I'll just have some from my sister. I ask for a bowl. I saw him went back and grab a dirty bowl from the sink. I saw him rinse it without washing the bowl with soap. He handed me the dirty bowl that was still wet. I confronted him that I saw him. I told him that I don't want the bowl no more. He went back to the kitchen and grab a new bowl and told me "it's good." At this point I don't care if "it's good." I wonder if they even wash the dishes before serving it to their customer. My husband and I ordered from this place for the first time. We ordered vegetarian spring rolls and a vegetarian pho. I'm not sure why yelp and google say they have many vegetarian options. They do not. The vegetarian pho came with beef broth and the veggie spring rolls were just lettuce and noodles wrapped in the rice paper wrapper. When we called back to ask for a vegetarian broth they said they only had chicken or beef. I spoke with a young woman over the phone and a male manager. The young woman really did her best to try and apologize and offer a refund. The manager was rude. I had to drive back down to the location to get my refund because they have no other way to process one other than cash or Zelle. Passing through on my way to Yosemite and wanted some phö so I looked for a place that looked like they did it right. Im from Stockton so I usually ate homemade phö growing up and get really picky with restaurants and, Im telling you, they do it right. We have been coming to this restaurant for more than 5 years. My daughter and I always order the #21 Chicken Pho. The last 3 times (in 2 months) we were there our "Chicken Pho " was in fact TURKEY! I'm my personal opinion they are stocking up on Turkey's during the thanksgiving season when turkey is as low as 29 cents a pound and trying to pass it off as chicken. Their hours say they close at 11, we ordered take out at 10:15; they got angry and said they wanted us there by 10:30 for pick up and we said we could get there by 10:40. We get there a little before 10:40 and they refuse to unlock their door even though they see us knocking at it. I call twice and they refuse to pick up their phones at all. I have probably ordered from here over 100+ times in over the past 12 years or so. I'm saddened that it took me this long to leave a great review. I always order pho from this place with the #00, #1, and #2. My opinion is that this is the best pho place in Fresno and the best pho place in the United States of all the pho restaurants I've tried before. Why you ask? I'm glad you asked. 1) Taste: Their pho broth taste has been the most consistent great taste in the past 12 years that I've tried pho. And I've tried many pho place around the world like South Korea, Cambodia, Thailand, Vancouver, all over the United States and so on. Whenever I try some pho, I usually go to that same restaurant at least 3 times, just to make sure the broth taste is good AND consistent. So far, there has only been a handful of pho restaurants that are consistent that I've tried, and even fewer that are good AND consistent. There are some pho that just consistently suck. Not Pho #1 though. 2) Price: Their pho prices are lower than competitors. An X-Large bowl of pho is set at $7.75 while others like Huang Lan is set at $8.50 on Large. Their #00 is XX-Large is at $10.25 and is MASSIVE. My stomach feels like it's going to explode so I have the option of saving the broth and boiling new pho noodles for later. This restaurant seldom raise their prices. And it's been cheap and good against its competitors. 3) Place/Cleanliness: The place is pretty much the same as many other pho restaurants. It had been remodeled a couple years ago and the bathroom is clean enough without feeling disgusted. Walls have been painted and many of the artwork in the restaurant used to have Vietnamese art style but has been changed to more western art. No opinions there but it seemed to have improved the presence and customer-friendliness towards more Western or Non-Asian customers. Better than half the pho restaurants I know. There is definitely areas that it can still improve on but overall it's good. 4) Take-out vs Eat-in: This is probably the category that I've rarely seen reviewed on for pho places. As some pho-natics may know, there can be a difference in taste from eating in at the pho restaurant and take-out pho. Many times, eating in pho at the restaurant will taste much better for some reason. Overwhelming majority of the pho restaurants I have eaten, eating at the restaurant is much better than take-out and eating at home. BUT From my experience, almost half the time I eat from Pho #1 I order take-out and bring it home. They STILL LITERALLY TASTE THE SAME as way as you would eat in the restaurant. Period. MIND BLOWN! The beef pho was absolutely bland. It looked absolutely delicious, but the broth was watered down. I could barely tell it was beef broth and herbs like star anise were non-existent. I couldn't even finish my bowl, and I always finish my pho. Maybe I've been spoiled in Orange County, but there's better pho in Philadelphia and in Nashville than what was offered at Pho #1. The pho deserves no more than 2 out of 5 stars. There were two insects crawling on my dish of veggies (I even included a picture on Yelp). I'm generally not afraid of eating at ghetto places (both coasts and down south), but I seriously don't appreciate bugs in my food. Granted, they weren't in my bowl of pho but I obviously stayed away from the bean sprouts and mint. I only managed to capture a picture of one of the insects (the other crawled deep into the bean sprouts). For this alone, I dropped the overall rating from 2 stars down to 1. As I am writing this, I am reminded by the phrase "one man's gravy is another man's poison", and my sincere thoughts is to covey that this place appeals to me for its mouth watering vietnamese food selection, but to some it may seem repugnant for its CASH only policy and its ambience clearly overlooked for details. In my opinion, its almost impossible to have a classy Pho restaurant in these rundown section of the city (you could get nicer pho restaurants in north parts of Fresno/Clovis), however the charm and attraction of visiting a restaurant like this is the authentic taste, budget friendly pricing and the uncommon menu selection. What attracts me to Pho #1 is certainly its delicious bowl of Beef Pho which can be enjoyed as early at 7.30am for breakfast/brunch or as late as 11pm for supper, by the same token its other food selection such as the noteworthy rice plates, seafood Pho, Chicken Food and and appetizers is worth exploring. My personal favorite is their rare steak pho, flank, tripe and tendon pho,a humble small size for $5.99. The broth itself is simply delicious- its flavor is a perfect marriage of the earthy taste of beef bones cooked for hours, charred onions and ginger, coupled with the rich taste of spices (cinnamon, fennel star anise, clove and cardamon). There is also a perfect balance of sweetness and saltiness to this broth. The most important step when my steaming hot broth comes to the table, is to savor and appreciate the taste of the broth, by smelling the aroma and taking that first sip, I would not recommend adjusting the broth with any sriracha or hoisin, because that would clearly destroy and manipulate the taste. For the price of $5.99, the bowl is seriously generous, and comes with a ample amount of meat especially for protein lovers like myself. The noodles is perfectly al dante, and their spring herbs condiments was fresh, clean and crisp. The lemongrass chicken with steam rice $7.99 was absolutely divine. The chicken was perfectly grilled, tender to bite, while the taste of the chicken was a perfect balance of aroma from the infusion of lemongrass, saltiness and slight sweetness. The rice was certainly fragrant, an indicator that quality jasmine rice was used. The portion of the meat is always generous considering the modest price per plate, which always satisfies my huge appetite. Generally speaking this is a perfect place to have an authentic taste of vietnamese food at affordable pricing. The interior itself and service is no where noteworthy (as I had mentioned, might be appalling to the elitist in all of us), but it certainly is comfortable considering this parts of town. The taste is certainly genuine and delicious Vietnamese food, and would attract me time and time again. Their broad opening hours makes it a great destination for breakfast, but also a nice place for late dinners. Parking is certainly not an issue here since there are plenty on its front lot, the only major issue is its cash only policy, so do remember to bring cash (yes they do have an ATM inside- but the charges is ridiculous ;l$2 and up). read more
