Wow!!!! Is this what I've been missing!?!?? I've always made fun of pho. I never got the point of going to a place to assemble my own dish. Well, man, this food is delicious. I started off with the pork dumplings pan fried, not steamed. Yum yum yum!!!! The best dumpling ever!!! That may be hyperbole but it was close. Then I had the P4---pho with beef and sate 5 spice. So so good especially on a chilly night. The server said this was mild spice. If you don't like spice at all, you will think this is more than mild...BUT it was worth it. I think it's cinnamon in it that gave it a delicious taste. Definitely worth a visit...caveat---first time having pho, I'm sure there may be better pho out there. read more

While visiting family in Virginia, my father-in-law suggested we eat lunch at Pho 1 Grill. Apparently, my father-in-law had just discovered this place a week or so earlier, but had been here to eat three or four times already during that limited time. When we arrived they had reserved a round table near the back for us since we had a party of seven. This was a great location and it gave us some privacy and allowed for decent conversation. The staff here were extremely attentive, they answered questions about the menu and made some great suggestions for the kids. I started by ordering a coconut bubble tea, and let me tell you now, I could have finished off two or three of these things. Though, it's quite sweet and very dessert like, it is the best bubble tea I've ever tasted. For my meal, I ordered David Tea's Basil Stir-fry. The chicken was perfectly cooked, tender and moist. The sauce added a great flavor, but was not quite spicy enough, so the sambal on the table was a welcome addition. My kids all enjoyed their meals, while my oldest son, the meatatarian did need to get an extra ordered of chicken skewers. My youngest son swears the Pho here is the best he's ever had (to my knowledge, he's only tried Pho one other time), but he already wants us to promise him we'll eat here again on our next trip to Virginia. I went here once last year with friends, and made a point of stopping by again when I found myself in RVA for the entire summer. The menu is varied, the food is consistently delicious, and the staff is kind with excellent service. 2 Stars - dish: Vermicelli - review: low quality noodles, absolutely dry, brittle and tasteless. Noodles are supposed to be silky and somewhat "al dente". The meats are of decent quality, the portions are a bit small for what they charge. But all that could've been overlooked if not for their terrible quality of noodles. Their shrimp spring rolls were ruined by the cheap noodles as well. A lot of family and friends said their food was terrible, but I hadn't been there in a while, so i decided to give it another chance. Inside, there isn't a single Asian in the restaurant, that was the first red flag. Anyway, I only tried their vermicelli so I can't speak on their other dishes. They get 2 stars for charging $17+ for low a low quality product. And $5+ for terrible cheap quality spring rolls. Literally anywhere else you can get the same dishes for $13/$14 And spring rolls for $3 Save your money, you can get better quality food for cheaper, at Mekong, Pho So 1, Vietnam 1, Tay Ho. read more

We are here for the first time for dinner this weekend. Ordered two of their signature dishes - the classic Pho dish (P1) and Pho 1 egg noodle stir-fry (M1). They were wonderful! Great food but horrible service. Beware of the older female server. She seems to be the wife of the owner, but if theres a way for her to up-charge she'll find it. Unfortunately she hides her misunderstanding when asked by her lack of english, which is just fine by the way (as I'm also Asian and know that game). Nevertheless don't expect her to make things right. I dread getting this woman as she seems cheerful enough when greeting next to her husband, but is fairly robotic when it comes to customer service. Oh and there are no meals or pricing for kids. The only items that you can get is white or brown rice and steamed vegetables. If you ask for a small side of fried rice, expect a no. First time eating here. We got take out and they were very nice, but the food was not good. We got the pho 1 egg noodles with vegetables and they were lacking flavor and very oily. The summer vegetable rolls were lacking veggies. They were mostly noodles with a couple carrots tossed in, very disappointing. The vegetable dumplings were very doughy and not good at all. They are definitely slow and inattentive (we had to flag someone down several times, even just to order 10 minutes after being seated). However, I am not one to let bad service impact my rating of the food. Dumplings- soooo delicious. They remind me of soup dumplings with how juicy they are Spring rolls- they were good Beef pho- really enjoyed the broth and the beef was cooked perfectly (tender and easy to pick apart) Salmon dish in the specials section- enjoyed this, a big piece of salmon which was appreciated Basically all other chicken and beef dishes were a disappointment. I'm surprised how few people comment on the cost to dine here. It's not cheap and, IMHO, overpriced for what you get. Our small group (4 adults) stopped in for Sunday lunch and ordered two "Tom Yum" soups, one "Vegetable Steamer" with Shrimp, a grilled chicken & shrimp combo, and four spring rolls. The Tom Yum soups were primarily a modest scoop of noodles with about 4-5 shrimp (w/ tail left on) in a lot of spicy broth. It wasn't filling in the least -- I think it had fewer noodles than a package of ramen -- yet was $11! After finishing the soup -- which by the way looked nothing like the overflowing/abundant pho/soup photos on Yelp from 4-5 yrs ago -- I tried to order a side of fried rice since I was still hungry. The waitress told they don't sell side dishes of fried rice. (?!) The other two entrées ($16 Vegetable Steamer and $11 grilled shrimp & thin-sliced chicken combo) were also smallish. The four spring rolls with peanut sauce ($7 total), were pretty good, and the only thing I don't feel was overpriced. This place must be making a killing, since their food cost (for primarily water-based broth and small portions of noodles and/or rice) is likely pennies, yet they charge $$. We all drank water, but our bill still came to $61 -- over $70 after tip! I couldn't help but think we could have prepared the same food at home for about $15 ...with much bigger portions! I should point out I've been to this restaurant two other times over the past few years and came away with the same impression; the food is "okay" in flavor (nothing great) and is overpriced. Think I'll start looking elsewhere for better food and better value. read more

We've been wanting to come here for a while due tot the great reviews and went yesterday. The place was packed and we had to wait 15 minutes but were seated and ordered the P1 pho and S1 bahnmi as they were their most popular dishes. The bahnmi was average and tiny and the pho was Luke warn and mildly flavored. The fact the pho was not hot and not flavorful was a huge turn off. Unimpressed, we left and won't return. read more

I eaten at Pho 1 for years. I have celiac and they have a lovely gluten free menu. I have never had a reaction. There are new owners. I ordered Tom Ym Shrimp. When they brought the dish the sauce was brown. I asked are you sure this is gluten free. The new owner said yes. I immediately got sick. I will never eat there again. read more

This was my first time coming to a Vietnamese joint and NOT ordering pho. I wasn't craving pho like I typically am, so branched out and ordered banh mi, which is something I had been wanting to try for a while. The pork banh mi was surprisingly really good. Crusty bread, lots of veggies; the meat had a sweet BBQ flavor to it. My mom ordered the lemongrass chicken, and she said it was good, but lacked the strong lemongrass flavor she was seeking. The service was above average- the young server was attentive and wore a high smile. The restaurant is new, with modern decor and is very spacious and open. This is the EXACT same set up/concept as the restaurant before this one (forgot the name..) Me and my friend split their pho 1 sampler/combo as we only wanted a snack. It came with fried shrimp, shrimp, spring rolls, dumplings and Teriyaki glazed chicken skewers. Fried shrimp was typical, nothing really fancy going on, dumplings were your average frozen ones and steamed until they were ready again, and the chicken skewers were overly sweet and almost tasted like candy.. The spring rolls were also pretty standard. Unfortunately, nothing really stood out food wise, and with an abundance of Viet restaurants around, you really need to showcase what you can offer. The service was a little too much here.. there weren't too many patrons so I saw the servers watching from a distance. It's nice to know that they can refill the water and clean up plates quickly but it made us feel a little awkward b/c they were just waiting to find something to do. My friend and I were craving Vietnamese food and a new place we have yet to try so I searched yelp. (Of course!) we came across pho 1 grill and wanted to try it. First impressions are always a thing for me and right when we stepped in we were greeted by 2 of the friendliest people ever! :) brownie points for making us feel welcomed. And I recognized the lady from Tan-A! She sat us quickly. The decor was beautiful. I felt like I was at the fanciest Vietnamese restaurant in town. Now let's talk about the good stuff, the food! For appetizers we ordered teriyaki beef skewers. OMG. This was so good. I'm a big fan of saucy things and the skewers came out saucy and tender. They gave us 4 skewers of long slices of beef. I ordered the vermicelli bowl with chicken and shrimp. The portion was kind of small compared to other places, but then again it was their lunch portion. It was good and very flavorful. In the recent years, a lot of Vietnamese Restaurants have open and are offering what seems to be MOST popular; Pho. When, I go to any Asian Restaurant, I expect a complexity of flavors. I am a BIG fan of Asian Food because of this, and yesterday when I was in the Westend of Richmond, I came across Pho 1 Grill. So, I JUST had to stop in and check them out and I am glad I did.... The place is spotless, and I had no problem in finding good seating as I always go late after lunch, so I can beat any crowd. My favorite time to eat.... When they bought me the menu, I asked for the Lunch Menu. He said I had it... So, I was looking at a Lunch Menu which looked like dinner prices on it. I was anxious to see what the dinner menu looked like upon my leaving. So, I ordered the Vietnamese Curry Chicken spicy. I asked for EXTRA Spicy as well. I had the Hot & Sour Soup along with the Summer Spring Roll. The H&S soup came out first, and upon tasting it, I knew it was ONLY slight warm. Hot & Sour soup needs to be Temperature Hot.... By the time, I had eaten half the soup, it was cold in taste. I was disappointed in the soup, as the food needs to be Temperature HOT! When the Curry Chicken came out, I noticed the Summer Roll on the plate, but smaller in size. It was about a 1/3 smaller than most Spring Rolls. The Curry Chicken, the portion was small in size for what they were charging as well... I put some of the Peanut sauce on my Summer Roll and it lacked in flavor. So, when I tried the Curry Chicken, I was extremely disappointed. The Curry Sauce was not thick as it should have been and it was like a watered down Brown Gravy. It did not have the Curry Flavor as I had hoped. When I order a Curry dish, I want to taste the Curry in my dish.... In addition, it was NOT Extra Spicy as I had ordered. I saw ONE whole Red Chili Pepper in the dish... Upon leaving, I looked at the dinner menu and I was shocked to see how the prices are almost doubled. I asked the Manager if the portions are larger, and he said yes.... Finally, I have eaten in many Asian Restaurants here in Richmond and have returned several times because of their great food. I may go back to Pho 1 Grill, and try their Pho... however, I will probably drive by their place, as there are too many good Asian Restaurants here which give you excellent food with good portions even if you do go for lunch.... I moved here from Northern Virginia, aka the Mecca of Vietnamese food so I admit I have high expectations. This place is amazing and blows all the other Vietnamese restaurants (*cough* pho so 1) out of the water. I kid you not I stopped trying Vietnamese places because they were so mediocre until now. The owners are so thankful that you are there,the atmosphere is welcoming, it's clean and the food is the freshest in Richmond. A staff member is always checking in, with big smiles and an eagerness to please. I cannot recommend this place enough. Since discovering it about two weeks ago, I've been there about five times!! Got my usual pork and rice vermicelli, and I don't know what else was in it, but it wasn't good. It tasted like fake meat, and the actual pork didn't have that grill taste to it that makes it so good. AND I left still hungry. The crispy spring rolls were just okay. My twelve-year-old niece ordered cellophane noodles with chicken... wish I tried it so I could comment. She ate half of it. I really wish I liked it. They were REALLY nice people.
