This occurred the first week of lockdown 2020. I want to say that I have been going here for 8 years or so. Never had a bad meal, rarely does the service fail. The family runs this shop like a Swiss clock. However, and here it comes; pandemic hits, and Americans want to support all their favs. So like you I head over. Order by phone, mask on, walk in... as I am standing there I noticed that they are having a 20% off all alcohol sales, so I said why don't you give me 2/6 packs as well. Funny thing is the owners and I know them by name start to have a conversation in their native tongue. I have to say they have never spoken in front of me any language other than English. Sidenote, I don't care where you're from or what languages you speak, I am merely mentioning this because in eight years they have never done this. I don't bother to look at my receipt, I tip them very heavily with cash and I leave. When I return to my car I get a notification on my phone from my bank, and like everyone on the planet I look at it. The notification states the amount of money that I just spent at this restaurant .....cue...... jaw drop! When I went to go pick up the $14 worth of food and saw the alcohol sale I had no idea that I would be charged the amount that this restaurant normally charges for having one beer while seated x/12. So my $14 lunch turned into a $76 patronage. I didn't even bother to go inside. My next step was to drive home and talk to my wife about it, as this affected me dearly. Obviously I am in a quandary about the ethics of what just happened. I thought I would let my wife make the decision for me. So. I no longer go here. I really wanted to support them,but wow. You're welcomed by a very modern ambiance and familiar Vietnamese flavors! I'm not Vietnamese, but from experience with tastes of both homemade and restaurant cooked food, the tastes here are on point! Bubble tea was creamy and sweet. Yes it was definitely made from powder, so it's nothing to advertise, but I was happy it hit our boba craving! I had the chicken vermicelli and the chicken was seasoned on the sweeter side rather than savory and eventually I enjoyed it. The fish sauce wasn't very noticeable when I poured it on my noodles and I'm not sure if I enjoy that better. It did it's job to moisten my noodles while keeping my veggies crunchy. The few bites of pho I had had very familiar flavors, not watered down and meats were tender and not overdone. I would definitely come back for my next Vietnamese craving! read more

My wife and I spend months every year in Vietnam. As she is Vietnamese it's incredibly difficult to find this sort of food out here in Virginia, but we have found one place that really does make it feel a bit like home. 4 years later and this restaurant has remained consistently excellent!! We've brought friends and family to Pho 1 Grill throughout the years and everyone has thoroughly enjoyed it. My niece loved it so much she became "a regular." The warm welcome and appreciation Ellen and Paul show us and all their customers every single visit is one of the many reasons this is our favorite pho restaurant. They are such kind and genuine people that they make you feel more like valued friends than customers. We ordered a variety of entrees (take out) tonight to share among 7. Everything was prepared perfectly, packed well, presented nicely and delicious!! My parents raved about the varied selection choices (pho 1 sampler, beef and pork vermicelli, chicken banh mi, lemongrass pork grill. Southern salmon, tom yum soup, beef and broccoli, and garlic broccoli)! We all enjoyed every entree ordered! We over ordered, but it was difficult to limit our order to just a few items. It was a great family-style dinner with lots of leftover for lunch. We continue to highly recommend Pho 1 Grill. It was pretty slow due to the rain. The staff was SUPER attentive. The decor was clean and modern. Very comfortable. Fancy. Different than the pho places in California. I loved how the chopsticks were individually wrapped instead of in the containers God knows how many hands have touched it. I wish they had small ramekins for the hoisin sauce. I just made my own. The pho broth was good. Tasty. It has a small amount of MSG which is better than most other places where they put a whole bunch of MSG. The crispy spring rolls were ok... I've had better. The garlic crispy tofu were ok. I rather have sweet and sour sauce than the salty brown sauce. Overall good experience. Would go back. read more

This is my favorite pho place! This place looks a little bit more high end than regular pho places which I like and the prices were about the same as an other pho restaurants in rva. The service is amazing and the food is top notch! My go to pho places the service can be slow/fast, but the workers don't really interact with you. I really like that the manager/owner came to every table to talk to everyone. My favorite dish was the fried tofu! It was lightly fried and not oily at all which can make the tofu soggy, like the owner/manager explained to us. I honestly have no complaints! Nevertheless, the pho was delicious! read more

We discovered Pho 1 Grill about 10 days ago and have now eaten there THREE times - once in the restaurant and we've ordered take-out twice. I cannot day enough about the food. We've had different dishes each time and every dish has tasted amazing. I highly recommend the Crazy Beef (H13), Vinh bo bia (H10), grilled pork (c2), and pho 1 egg noodle stir-fry (m1). You MUST try the bubble tea - it's like a smoothie - Mango is our favorite. Our only regret is that they've been open longer than we've been going and we've been missing out on GREAT food for this long. Food was very tasty and the service was great. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was the quantity of food was not up to what I have had a other Pho places. The spring rolls were yummy but small maybe 1 inch in diameter. The meat on the Banh Mi was skimpy and same for my noodle bowl. I had 4 small shrimp and 3 very thin pieces of chicken. The flavor was great but just not a lot of meat. My family also had a bowl of Pho which the broth was very good. The service was spot on and the restaurant itself is clean and well kept. read more

Extremely consistent Pho and wonderful people. Having lived in Southeast Asia for several years before moving to NYC area, I didn't expect to feel closer to Vietnam when I recently relocated to Richmond, but that is exactly what happened at Pho 1 Grill. The food is excellent. The beef broth is strong enough, but not overly salty. The noodles are always snappy and the fixins are fresh. The differentiators to me though are the people. It's a family run restaurant that doesn't forget a face, and makes you truly feel like you are in a suburb of HCMC. The feeling you have walking in and walking out are equally joyful every time. I'm in Richmond for a conference and Pho 1 is within walking distance, so I decided to grab some lunch. And boy am I glad I did! I ordered P5 and a glass of Riesling. Both were delicious. This was the best pho I've had. The broth was so flavorful and the beef was tender. Just so damn good. I'm about to split my pants from being so full. The service was great. My primary server was George and he was very attentive and friendly. Other servers and the manager (or owner??) checked on me as well. The decor is nice and simple, and the restaurant looked very clean. I have zero complaints other than I wish I lived closer. read more

You sometimes make the best discoveries by accident. I was craving wonton soup a few weeks ago and found the best I've ever had to go from this wonderful restaurant. This trip I decided to eat in. After looking over the menu and reviews, I knew I would be trying the grilled pork soft rolls; they were a real treat along with a bowl of that delicious wonton soup. I also ordered their garlic shrimp and beef; after the soft rolls and the soup, the entree went home with me in a bag. It was delicious the next day, and I'm looking forward to my next trip to try something new. And the staff was just as good as the food! read more

Pho - Worst pho ever in the Richmond area. Broth is flavorless. Portion is smaller and meat quality is bad. I would go to Pho So 1 on any given day. Broken rice - the meat is as thin as paper as if I were in a sushi restaurant. Vietnam Garden has bigger portion with quality meat. Even Mekong is better. The owners are stingy although being friendly on the surface. They don't offer Lunch Special Menu. Portion is small and quality is not good, but they charge you more. This is a Vietnamese restaurant yet Asians rarely go there. You can tell what is going on. If I want great food, I would go to Pho So 1 and Vietnam Garden. If I want a more fancy Vietnamese meal or just feel like to pay more, I would go to Pho Saigon for their special menu of the day. If I want a drink with my gang, I would go to Mekong. I don't see any reason to go to Pho 1 grill again. read more

One of the best pho places I've ever been to! The food is just mind blowing, especially their Pho Dac Biet and Beef Vermicelli/Broken Rice. For the amount of food given PLUS the quality of it seriously makes this place worth going, especially if you're craving for some good Viet food. The one main thing that I love about this place is the environment. The family that runs this place treats me and the rest of my friends with the uttermost respect compared to every other restaurants I've ever been to. The place is also very hygienic which shows a lot about a restaurant. All in all, both the food and the service were phenomenal. For an appetizer, I had the shrimp rolls,which we're very fresh and delicious, and the steamed dumplings (way to doughy for my taste). The pho dac biet (rice noodles, brisket, eye round steak, tendon, and beef balls) was simply delicious, even with the fresh jalapeno peppers in the mix.
