No frills Pho noodles spot in a small strip mall in Philly. They have noodles and that's all, no spring or summer rolls, just Pho noodle soup. I got the big bowl of beef rib eye sliced noodles soup and it hit the spot on a cold day. Service is attentive and this place is CASH ONLY. Not sure if it was the Philly Cheesesteak I had prior, or if it was the noodles, I had the stomach virus for a few days. Strangely, I was the only one in my group of 10 who had such issues. But next time, I would skip the raw ingredients like the basil, sprouts and jalapeno peppers. The restaurant is tucked into the Wing Phat Plaza off Washington Ave. A custom "Pho 75" neon sign illuminates the front windows bright blue. The square room is cramped with linoleum tables and bare wooden chairs. The white-and-pink walls become discolored underneath the overhead fluorescent lighting, and Eagles Super Bowl banners hang from the well-worn ceilings. Dubiously live plants are scattered about the nooks and crannies of the space. The air is dominated by the chatter of guests, which blends with acoustic Vietnamese music in the background. This past weekend, I stopped by for an early dinner. The space was moderately full, and we were seated immediately. I opted for a Large #1 (with eye round, flank, fatty brisket, tendon, and tripe), while my partner ordered a #4 (same thing, but well-done brisket instead of fatty brisket). Service was no-nonsense and efficient. Within minutes, 2 steaming bowls were plopped onto our table, alongside a plate of fixings. Each bowl was served with a surprisingly hefty amount of tender meat. The aromatic broth started out good-not-great but was easily elevated with the fixings at the table. I was able to finish an entire large bowl and felt comfortably full. My partner also tried a Salty Pickled Lemon Soda, which tasted exactly as it sounds (salty, pickle-y, lemony, and unlike any combination of flavors I have tried before). At the end of the meal, we paid ($30, after tax and top) at the cashier toward the back of the restaurant. Of note, Pho 75 is cash only. While Pho 75 may not be knocking any socks off, it's well worth the price. At just $10 per bowl, it's no wonder why Philadelphians flock here for their pho hankerings. My partner and I have been eating at this establishment for some time now, and even went when indoor dining wasn't open. We recently started eating here every weekend for the past 4-5 weeks. We always order 2 large phos, one iced coffee, and a pot of hot tea. The price has always been around $21. We went today and ordered the same thing. I noticed that we didn't get the hot tea so when we brought the bill up to pay I mentioned this to the cashier. He seemed upset/annoyed and proceeded to tell me that the hot tea is on the house in a rude tone...despite having a price on the menu. When he rang us up the price was now $26. We didn't want to argue about the price discrepancy so we paid and left. I felt like it was so unprofessional how they handled the conversation and on top of that charged an "inconvenience fee". I would have never found Pho 75 if it wasn't for Mike Solomonov's high praise of it...and I'm so glad we gave it a shot! We stopped by for dinner when my parents were in town. My dad is big into getting a lot of food for not a lot of money and BYOB - Pho 75 checked all the boxes! The restaurant is located inside a strip mall on Washington - we walked there, but I can imagine parking could be a bit tricky, although it's otherwise easy to navigate to. We arrived just after 6PM on a Saturday night, and our party of 5 was easily seated. Pho 75 is a no frills establishment. There are minimal decorations (sans Philadelphia sports teams decor) and standard tables and chairs (nothing plush nor fancy here), but there is ample seating in the dining room to fit a bunch of people. Our waiter was readily available to us, and he was quite helpful in providing suggestions, opening and serving our wine, and answering all our questions. Of course, pho is the name of the game, but they have a variety of options that we struggled to pick from. Ultimately, we almost all went for the eye-round steak and brisket pho, which was absolutely wonderful. The meat was incredibly tender and the accompanying broth was so flavorful and rich. We loved the paired toppings - the basil was a unique but welcome touch and the bean sprouts gave a nice crunch. We all got the small bowls, which were still really large! We all made decent dents in our meals, but we felt so full after - I can't imagine a large! I would totally come back for another bowl and to try more meat options - I'm positive there's not a bad choice. For the price, you really can't beat the quality and quantity of pho. We loved the BYOB nature of the spot, but I would love to try some of their coffee and soda drinks. Very comforting on a cold rainy day. I am always cautiously skeptical of a high rating on any website for any restaurant just because sometimes they're just riding the wave of their reputation while quality had long slipped. The thing that ultimately made me want to try this place still is the fact that they only serve pho and nothing else (besides some beverages). No other noodles soups, no other dishes or appetizers, not even a damn spring roll. So you'd hope they can still do just this one thing extremely well. And I would say they do! The broth was light and clear and not super rich and gelatinous but that's not necessarily bad? It was seasoned well and still had a light layer of flavor, spices, and a subtle sweetness. It was not a dark salty artificial overly sweet umami bomb, which is always my red flag number one to never return to a place. The beef was really surprisingly exceptional. We had a variety of cuts between two bowls, and each of them were well-seasoned, cooked well, and tasted very fresh. The large included a very generous portion of meat too, for a very reasonable price. I'd love to come here and sit in for a freshly prepared bowl before/after grocery shopping one of these days, but in the mean time I'll definitely be back for take out this winter. Two things about take out - 1. Do take the extra step and keep the noodles uncooked. The way they pack it compared to other restaurants, the noodles are hopelessly soggy and broken by the time you reassemble at home. 2. No appetizers for you to choose from, no other options for you to really consider other than just a great bowl of Pho. Every time I'm feeling a bit weary I order this bowl of pho and it will make whatever ails you feel much better. These guys also aren't sticklers if you show up at 7:59pm. I was visiting the area from Boston, and this place served one of the worst bowls of pho I have EVER had in my life. The soup was bland and not flavorful, which I know is not supposed to be super strong in flavor anyways but it just tasted like oily sink water in my opinion. The menu was extremely limited and did not have anything BUT pho; like no rice plate options or different noodle selections, for ex. bun bo hue. I went with a group of friends, and there was a hair in her soup. There was nothing positive honestly from dining here and if I ever do visit Philly again and looking to get pho, I will FOR SURE avoid this pace in the future. Side note: I normally always finish my pho, not always the soup but I typically finish all of the noodles and meat. What they served me tasted & smelled like sink water. It didn't smell appetizing NOR did it taste in the slightest bit appetizing. On top of that, when I was trying to eat it, because I was extremely hungry, I kept smelling the chemical scent of Lysol just lingering in the air in the restaurant. Not really sure if this place just has good reviews and ratings because maybe the pho places are limited here, but the pho that I am used to eating, it could NEVER disappoint me the way how this place disappointed me.
