    Beef Pho

After some light shopping at H-Mart, popped into Pho Ga Thanh Thanh for some well deserved Pho on a chilly day. Service was great. The staff were very attentive and checked in frequently. Clean spot with a friendly staff. Mixed reviews on the Pho itself. The beef pho with stew was unique, flavorful, with tender meat. Really enjoyed this one and would highly recommend. The base beef pho left more to be desired. The meat was more chewy than I'm used to and the broth was bland.

Usually when people hear the word "Pho," they default to the beef flavored variety. Which is no surprise, since that is by far the most popular iteration of this classic Vietnamese noodle soup. But don't forget about the chicken version, Pho Ga. While I LOVE the traditional beef pho, of late, and especially in the DC area, it's getting harder to find a good spot. Mainly because most of the pho joints are skimping on the meat, giving more noodles, and the most critical component, the broth - tastes straight outta a can or is made from beef bouillon powder. During my recent trip to Philly, I stopped in at Pho Ga Thanh Thanh, since it came highly recommended as serving authentic chicken pho. Located in the Little Saigon neighborhood, I was especially happy that there is a small parking lot adjacent to the restaurant. Otherwise, there is often available street parking. The interior of PGTT is definitely no-frills. Large windows, illuminate a basic dining room with tile flooring, and well worn tables with metal chairs. There's really only one thing on the menu: either 1/2 or a full order of chicken pho ga. The 1/2 chicken was plenty for two people. Upon ordering, two pipping hot bowls of broth and noodles show up first, pho toppings such as bean sprouts/thai basil/lemon/jalapenos, along with a plate of various cuts of chicken and the "special dipping sauce." The true mark of any good pho place is the broth. While the broth at PGTT seems basic...it's FAR from it. The first sip revealed the hours long process of boiling chicken bones with aromatics (star anise, cardamon, garlic, etc). And then straining and re-straining the broth until it's clear and rich. It was amazing. When the chicken arrived, from what I could tell, the meat was boiled, but in a way that didn't dry out the meat. I "assume" it was cooked in the chicken broth to impart flavor. While there is sriracha and hoisin sauce table side, the server recommended using the provided house dipping sauce. It's a simple preparation of fresh lemon juice, salt/pepper, and sliced habenero peppers. The acidic tang and firey spice from the chilis, provides a nice flavor boost to the chicken! Also like that a pitcher of ice tea is provided free of charge. After squeezing in the lemon from the toppings plate, place in your cup to have a refreshing drink. Two bowls of pho ga with 1/2 plate of chicken with tax and tip came out to a bit under $35. Might seem to be on the "pricey" side, but not for a place that specializes in only one thing.

Simple and delicious meal!! Service is quick. Place is clean. Staff are friendly. My mother in law loved it so much, she ordered a whole chicken to go to drive back to NYC! We will come back on our next visit!

    - Service: Fast and attentive staff. - Ambiance: It's not the cleanest but it's okay. - Food: As a Vietnamese myself, this spot does have very decent Chicken Pho! We usually come in with my whole family, so we always get a whole chicken with some plain pho on the side. Their salt, pepper, and lemon dipping sauce for the chicken is just amazing. They do have some fresh sugar cane juice, which is to die for! I forgot if they charge extra on credit cards or not, but I remember they prefer cash. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to try some authentic North Vietnamese Chicken Pho.

I love a place that is cash only, has a limited menu (only two options!), is quick, tasty, and also serves offal. The server was nice and answered all of our questions. This is a no nonsense joint. We all got the chicken pho since that is the main staple of the restaurant (and name sake). I usually am not a fan of chicken pho as it's usually underwhelming and the broth is less flavorful but that is not the case here at all. The broth had an incredible depth of flavor, was seasoned so perfectly that I didn't even want to add anything additional to it. You order a quarter or half chicken at a time. As a group of 3, we got a half ($18) and it included one drumstick, wing and drummy, breast, thigh, a gizzard, and several puffs of chicken blood. The breast was dry and over boiled but the blood was the star of the show after the broth and perfectly cooked noodles. Definitely do not shy away from it!

My first time trying chicken pho! I was excited to find out that they opened a second location closer to my house. This location is located in a shopping plaza so parking is never an issue. The inside the restaurant is spacious and clean. The workers were friendly here but didn't really check on us to see if we needed anything. The sauce the came with the chicken pho was really good which enhance the taste of the chicken. We ordered pho Ga and I wish the broth was little hotter but it was full of flavor still! I will definitely come back to place for their special dishes!

They have two locations. One in the northeast and one in south philly owned by the same owner. They have the best fresh chicken pho. Homemade, delectable and cozy. The staffs are friendly and young. They have a tik tok acct which is hilarious.

Traditional restaurant vibes and the food comes out crazy quick! Chicken Pho: 4/5 Really nothing too special but done well. The broth was flavorful but still lacking on the essence of chicken and other flavors to complement it making a little more on the bland side. certainly had better. Meatball Pho: 2/5 nothing special about the meatball and the pho lacked essence. Meatballs are like the ones you buy at the supermarket. The flavor of the soup tasted more bland than the chicken pho. It tasted like it was supplemented by msg to try and bring savoriness to it and that's all.

I decided to write another review for this place, considering the fact that I've become semi addicted. The service is as amiable as you will get in any family run restaurant. I love the older woman in the kitchen who is so fun and friendly. The broth is as good as it possibly could be. Come in ready to get your fingers, dirty and enjoy an incredible meal.

The pho ga here is amazing. Strong rich chicken soup- nothing artificial. The chicken are steamed and texture is smooth. It comes with a tangy sauce. Service is fast and it's really only one item that everyone orders and it cost $15 cash only. They also sell sugarcane drink for $8. Bathroom in the back corner isn't the cleanest.

I hadn't been to this establishment since they first opened. Last time we came, we left thinking the broth was amazing but the chicken was tough. I'm glad we gave them another try. The broth was still equally amazing, noodles cooked perfectly, chicken was moist and not tough or dry this time. The lime salt they serve to dip the chicken in has a nice tang of spice to it too. For a large plain pho + quarter chicken + large chicken pho = $34. It's not cheap for a bowl of noodle soup, but it's pretty delicious. Service is quick, food comes out within 2 minutes of ordering. They no longer give you a menu to look at with prices, since they only have one thing on the menu - chicken pho. I still think it would be nice to have a menu for guests to compare prices of plain vs chicken pho, and the side chicken add-on.

Chicken pho is superior, especially if you have chicken pho from PGTT, and you can't convince me otherwise. I was never one to seek out viet restaurants until I moved away from home. Philly Viet food scene has given me so much comfort and PGTT is one of them. If you go on a weekend around lunch time, be prepared to wait but it's relatively quick. Most people eat and leave, they don't sit and chit chat. The broth is light but umami at the same time. The chicken's meat is bouncy and I love the salt and pepper dip that comes with it. We frequent this location and the newly opened location near Hmart very often and they both deliver consistently. Also love that they offer sugar cane, pennywort and Viet coffee here. The pennywort and sugar cane sometimes taste watered down depending on the day, but the coffee hits every time.

Food: 3/5 Service: 2/5 I am super disappointed in this pho restaurant. This place used to have very good pho which we would look forward to almost every week to come and eat. But the recent visit led to a major disappointment. Our usual order is 2x bowls of the regular plain pho and half a chicken. As seen in the photos, the visit a while back the bowl is filled with pho noodles. On the recent visit, the bowl was half full of noodles even though it was the same price. The two visits were about a month apart. Likewise, the chicken before was meaty but the recent chicken barely had any meats and didn't even look like it was half a chicken. The soup this time was also very bland not as flavorful as it used to be. To have a drastic change without any notice is disappointing since we would always come here to eat and leave with leftovers but this time we left feeling hungry. Additionally, there was barely any service. The only interaction between us and the staff was taking the order and bringing out the food. The staff also didn't even seem like they wanted to be there.

The Love is better. The space is beautiful, the service is consistently warm, and Stephen Starr's fingerprints are all over it. I love the painted white brick, the floral artwork along the walls, the street-level energy, and the outdoor seating. I also remember taking the elevator upstairs once. I can't remember whether we actually stayed and ate up there or asked to move back downstairs, but the space was charming and extremely private. It would be a great setting for a group dinner or event. Personally, I prefer downstairs. It's darker, livelier, and I like being at street level. The menu historically leaned more heavily into elevated Southern comfort food, which has never been my favorite style of cooking. That's probably why I've tended to prefer The Love for lunch over dinner, especially when Philadelphia has so many Starr restaurants competing for the same night out. I used to get what I remember as a salmon and farro bowl, although the menu appears to have evolved since then. Whatever the exact iteration was, I loved it. Fish and farro are both right in my wheelhouse. I've also enjoyed the kale salad and other lighter dishes. The thing I remember most vividly, though, is the cornbread. It is outrageously good and reason enough to order something for the table. I also give Starr credit for continuing to broaden the range of food styles in his portfolio. Once you've built restaurants across Italian, French, Mexican, English, steakhouses, seafood, and the rest, there are only so many obvious boxes left to check. The Love feels like its own lane: distinctly American, approachable, comfort-driven, and still polished enough to feel like a Starr restaurant. Looking at the menu now, it seems broader than I remember, with more options that appeal to me, and I'd be psyched to go back. The Love probably isn't the first Starr restaurant I'd choose purely based on cuisine, but that says more about the depth of his Philadelphia portfolio than it does about this restaurant. The room, hospitality, location, and execution are all excellent. I'd happily come here any day. Starr doesn't miss.

While I was downtown, I picked up about $92 worth of food, including 1 1/2 pounds of shrimp salad that couldn't be ordered online because, for some reason, the website would not allow it. The very next day, when we went to eat it, something was clearly wrong. The shrimp salad caused a tingling sensation on our tongues, and it was obvious it had gone bad. I called the deli to let them know not just because we couldn't eat it, but because I thought they would want to know if there was a potential issue with the batch. Instead of receiving an apology or any concern, I was met with a dismissive response of, "Oh, that's weird," and the conversation felt condescending. I explained that I couldn't bring the shrimp salad back because I'm leaving town and my mother has limited mobility. I wasn't asking for a refund on our entire order. I simply asked if they could issue a gift card or store credit for the shrimp salad so my mother could use it on a future visit. Every possible solution I suggested was met with an excuse as to why it couldn't be done. The spoiled food was disappointing, but the lack of empathy and customer service was worse. Loyal customers deserve to be treated with respect when they raise a legitimate concern. After years of supporting 4th Street Deli, this experience has unfortunately convinced us that it will be our last visit. I'm reading they have new owners, so maybe it's not the same amazing management we are used to.
