The Asian waiter didn't smile, wasn't attentive, didn't say hello, didn't say good bye, there was nothing positive, just seemed like he could care less and acted the same towards the other patrons. Blows my mind that know one else has noticed this & continues to frequent this establishment. The pho is mediocre at best. Second visit. Also a positive experience. I had a beef dish this time and it was very good. However there was only one waitress for the whole place and like 8 tables with people. She did a great job too. I just have the gut feeling that owners treat waiters like garbage and that's why there were no other employees. My 6 year old loves soup so we came here for lunch because they were close. We both loved the soup, all the items we orders had great flavors, the service was good and they were quick. Huge portions, we ate some of the soup and ended up having a lot of left overs which we happily had for dinner. Over all I would come here again. Made a call for a to-go order and when I walked in the guy took 10 minuets just to help me. He was by the computer in the back sitting on his phone and clearly knew I was there and said "I'll be right there" and still on his cell phone. Stopped by this place last week. Walking in, I didn't expect the restaurant to actually make bomb pho in such a town that lacks diversity (compared to Southern California, where I live) like Bakersfield. Service was amazing! There was only one waitress but she somehow managed all the tables herself and was still attentive. The atmosphere is very modern and the music is great. Silverware and bowls are of top notch quality for the price range it offers. The only thing it's missing right now is a pokestop. My husband and I went to Pho 88 for date night a couple of days ago and I was horrified with the service and cleanliness of the restaurant. The vibe inside was depressing. Our waiter happened to be the owner, he was the only one working the floor that evening. Huge red flag!! He was aloof, emotionless and short. He looked miserable working. We had to ask him for the basics such as plates and utensil after he brought out our appetizer. He appeared irritated and inconvience in doing it. Once he brought us our food, he literally avoided our table. He didn't even refill our drinks after hearing my husband saying he was thirsty. The only time he came back to our table was to drop off the bill and quickly left. Towards the end of our meal, a family of four came in and they must have been friends because he was mingling with them and was very attentive. It was the first time I saw the owner smile all night. I feel he should treat every customer the same. I will not come here again. The food was decent, but the service was poor. Just experienced this place. Food is fantastic, service is very poor. As part of a small group, we were told that they don't split guest bills, because it takes too long. They ended splitting them anyway. Food arrived before our drinks did, and then the drinks were given to the wrong people. One in our party did not get his order with the rest of the group, without any explanation from the staff as to why. Finally our server said that the kitchen had messed his order up, and had to make it again. He ended up leaving before it arrived. First Pho experience here at Pho88. The food was great. I have been here a few times and it is consistent. I usually order the flank steak and brisket with shrimp fried rice and sweet and hot wings. Food has been great every time. They also have a good wine selection. Not a fan of the stainless chop sticks as the Pho tends to slide right off. Good place!!! read more

Went here for a quick lunch one day and its not as good as I was hoping. The soup portion is very large and cheaply priced. The flavors though were not very good the beef they brought me to cook in my soup tasted horrible and I got the upgraded steak option. Pretty disappointing. He made a point to provide great service to the men at the table next to us that shared the same common seven oaks golfing interest because the man serving them was wear a seven oaks vest. My wife found this place from another Yelp review and I am very grateful she did. We have to go here once a week now that we know about it. Our meals usually include the spring rolls with the peanut sauce, a pho bowl, and a side of pork fried rice. That is the best fried rice I've had in a long time. The pho noodle bowls are killer. I found the spicy beef bowl (#14) is amazing. I have to warn you though that it is very spicy even for someone who is tolerant. If you go for the first time, YES, the tables are sticky they sealed them funky lol. I would like to see them invest in a soda fountain rather than cans, but that is all minor. Good eats!! read more

My wife and I just returned from lunch at Pho 88. Overall we were disappointed with our visit, and here's why. Service - 4 out of 5 The service was fine; the waitress was friendly and timely. No complaints. Food - 2.5 out of 5 The food was average. I ordered the veggie pho and my wife ordered the Pho 88 Special (mostly fish and wheat noodles). Both dishes were comparable to Pho Hut or Pho Vi. Not bad, but nothing special. Value - 1 out of 5 This is where the restaurant really disappointed us. The food prices were fairly comparable to other pho restaurants in the area, although Pho 88 was a little more expensive. The drinks, however, were definitely overpriced. The Thai tea was $2.50, which is standard, but they charged $2 for a 12 ounce can of soda. That's a 1000% markup! Charging large amounts of money for drinks is one way that restaurants try to sneak more profit from their customers, and it's a pet peeve of mine. Our total price ended up being $17 per person, after 2 dishes, 2 drinks, and a standard (16%) tip. For $17 per person, I expect more from a restaurant. My wife and I will not be back. If you are looking for decent pho, just stick with Pho Hut or Pho Vi. They offer better value, and they don't try to scam you on the drinks. read more

Spicy wow and excellent. Spicy beef pho with noodles. Add in's on the side include bean sprouts cilantro, basil, lime and japaleno. Also had spring rolls with pork or shrimp. Peanut sauce and a sweet ginger sauce for dipping. Small with very good service. read more

I've been a regular customer eating at Pho 88 about once a week. During the week service was good and the pho was good with plenty of broth and noodles. Lately, especially on the weekends service has been mediocre and it seems like both the ingredients and quantity of the pho have both gone down. This is the 2nd time I order from Pho 88. The BBQ Spring Rolls are good and I've had the Chicken Teriyaki. Which was also good but the customer service is horrible. I was "helped" by the same guy the 2 times I went to pick up my order. He has no emotion or the wanting to help you.Really makes you feel not wanted and awkard. He just gives you the order and receipt and does bother to say thank you or see you next time or nothing. Both times i didn't get my change back. We had terrible service! We were seated and then she disappeared for ten minutes. We finally flagged her down and ordered our appetizer, food, and drinks. We received the appetizer and food BEFORE we got our cans of soda. I flagged her down again to ask for them, and she said "I'll bring them to you when I can". We didn't even get to eat half of our meal before we had to go back to the office, which was disappointing. It's not necessarily her fault that she was the only one working the busy lunch hour. When we walked in, we noticed how cozy and well decorated it was. We were nicely greeted by the server and told us we can sit anywhere. Mind you, there was only one server. He quickly cleaned the table we chose to sit at and asked us what we wanted to drink. After we got our drinks, we ordered our food. One order of the spring rolls, one order of their salt & pepper chicken wings and a large pho. We got our food in a matter of 15-20 minutes which to us was very quickly. The service has always been slow, I overlooked the slow service because I really liked the pho, tonight the service was beyond bad. We ordered at 5:20 pm for 4 items to go, we were told 15 mins, we got there at 5:20 so I was prepared to wait, it was obvious the moment I walked in that they were overwhelmed. We ended up waiting 45 mins for our to go order. We got home and realized that our order was wrong, so my child wasn't going to get to eat? We called them and they asked us to wait 20 mins to get the correct order??? Really?? After waiting 45 mins and then driving home and driving back another 20 mins I picked up the CORRECTED order which I checked as well as I could due to it being PHO Soup, got home and my first order was wrong!!! Contained tripe and tendon which I ended up THROWING OUT as I'm not eating tripe and tendon, the second order had ZERO MEAT and no vegetables and the third order was cold teriyaki chicken which my child refused to eat!!! So to summarize I paid 35.00 for orders that at 7:20 pm we threw in the trash! They actually asked us to come back and offered a replacement for 1 order? All three orders went right in the trash, my child ate the springs rolls. The service here is terrible! We will never go back! read more

Came her with my wife and kids for dinner on a Wednesday at seven. I was surprised at how nice the decor was inside from what I expected. Don't know why I expected less, I just did. Maybe it was cuz the best pho places seem to be owned by the cheapest owners who don't care much about ambiance. Anyhow, the pho was as good as anywhere in Bako and we were pleased. To be clear, we only tried the small Tofu pho bowl, which if you know pho, is pho kin big. I had a plate I can't pronounce or remember but it had beef and chicken with a mound of rice, a small bowl of broth and a small bowl of fresh steamed veggies. It was really good, and what made it best was this spicy tangy little cup sized tray of soy saucey type dipping juice. It was so good. My kids split a plate of teriyaki chicken which my wife and them both really seemed to like. Thanks for the free egg roll order which were tasty as well. We ordered waters so I can't comment on drinks much but the sweet Filipina waitress who served us was top notch and very attentive despite being the only waitress there at the time. The price was fair and I can't say I had any complaints. The waitress said the owners just added more items to the menu to include Korean noodles and a few other things. I would rate the pho as good as most any in Bakersfield and I'm glad there is a pho place on my side of town now. ......but Pho Hut is still the Best pho in town I think. read more

I've heard about this place of quite a while. I love me some good pho, but this place DEFINITELY has the worst in Bakersfield. First, let me go over the menu; this place has an identity problem. When I go to a "pho"/Vietnamese restaurant and look over the menu, I don't usually see Japanese items like tempura or sushi rolls, and/or Chinese items, plus is this place a "wine bar" too? We ordered the combination spring roll. The bbq pork was dry and tasteless. Most places serve rolls with a peanut hoisin sauce, not this place, they serve theirs with a sauce that resembles baby food vomit. Now, lets get to the pho. I ordered the seafood pho. It consisted of 2 squid ring, 4 pieces of imitation crab, 4 shrimp, and 3 fishballs. The broth had a vinegar taste to it. It was totally disgusting! The bean sprout and mint leaves were moldy...TOTALLY GROSS!!! The waitress was ok... I will NEVER go to this "establishment" again...there are many other places to get awesome Vietnamese food. read more
