My fave Vietnamese restaurant in Chicago so far!!! As someone who moved to Chicago from the Bay Area, it is VERY difficult to beat the Vietnamese food there and I miss it! I've tried a few other Vietnamese restaurants around the city but nothing has met my standards until this place! Pho is more on the cinnamon-y side which I don't mind bc it's still super packed with flavor. They also add tripe to their pho dac biet which is not too common anymore so I was quite surprised. Bánh mì is very good, the meat is very flavorful and the pickled veggies balance well. Bánh canh is pretty standard too, they use premade udon noodles but I wished they used handmade bc it would be so much better! Prices are pretty average as well. read more

Great food and generous portions but most importantly packaged effectively to heat up your broth the right way when you get it for pick-up/carry out. When you get Pho they give you your noodles and additional toppings and broth each in separate containers so you can heat up the broth properly and then add your noodles and toppings to heat them. I came for an early weekend lunch, no one else was eating here yet, and got one of their phos. They seem to give more protein than some other pho restaurants. In terms of the broth, it tasted like the standard broth you'd expect, nothing significantly better than any other place in the neighborhood. Their squeeze bottles for the sauces were sticky to the touch, so sanitation can be improved. I did enjoy my pho, as I typically do, but I can't say it was anything that blew me away or significantly better than your ordinary bowl of pho. The space is on the smaller side for a Vietnamese restaurant and I'm not sure that they would be able to accommodate larger parties. The flavors are so good, and honestly, it tastes even better the next day if you save it. The restaurant inside is small but spacious enough where I don't feel like I'm too close to other patrons. We gave this place a try because Cafe Hoàng closes on Wednesday. We ordered bun bo Huế and bún riêu. My first reaction when I looked at the menu was this place is expensive. An average egg roll or spring roll order are $8 per order and most of their dishes are around 16-18 per dish. We can't leave now since we already sat down and drank their water. We decided to order anyway. As soup came out in a large bowls, hence I can see why they charge us so much per bowl. Both bun Bo que and bún riêu were okay. While the flavors were there, it wasn't flavorful. They overcooked our noodles.
