The fresh spring rolls yielded 3/4 of a cup-yes 3/4 of a cup of shredded carrots that I pulled out. The egg bits were literally 1 ml in width. The Som Tum was just awful. The minute I opened the container, the smell of garlic was overwhelming. There was no sweet/savory/citrus layers. The lettuce they put underneath it was wilted aka old. Hole-in-the wall (in the best sense) OG for spicy Thai on Lincoln. Staff could not possibly have been friendlier nor more excited for people to come eat. They were doing a brisk business in to-go orders, but this location also has an "eat in" section that can hold maybe 25-ish. Came to do the "5x Spicy Challenge" and see if it's worth trying to claim the top spot (30x spicy perhaps?) on the wall. 5x was truly no sweat (literally, although my nose ran) for an experienced chili head and challenge participant, but if you aren't well versed in spicy, dip your toe into the water slowly with a different spice level before tackling this one. Wow, I really enjoyed this place! The chicken satay skewers were very good! The bean sprouts were a bit wilty in the pad thai, but it still tasted good. Our order came with a small cucumber salad and a few crab rangoons which was a pleasant surprise. This restaurant is small and has minimal seating but take out is a reliable option. This place's name confused me for the longest time - like, it's called Pho's, but that's traditionally a Vietnamese dish. But this place specializes in Thai food. BUT - they actually do have Pho on the menu? Well anyway, what they're really known for is great Thai food...but you also can't ignore the "Spicier" in their name. I like heat in my food, but you need to heed their warnings here. I usually go with "Mild Plus", which would probably equate to a level above medium at most other spots. Of course if you were nuts you could try for their spice challenges, but I find it more enjoyable to watch other people attempt them. Pretty much everything is good here. So sad to report that their quality has gone down significantly. I got their pad thai and it was 99% noodles and 0 flavor. Also tried the pad see ew and that was slightly better but a bit watery and we requested it to be the 3rd hottest spice level and I couldn't taste any spice. I've been ordering from Pho's for about 10 years now, so it's probably time I wrote a review. I love this place. I want to marry it. I order take out regularly and the food always arrives piping hot. My order stays the same; Pho's Thai noodle soup with tofu, mild plus, with extra hot sauce and lime. This soup is the cure for cancer, I am sure of it. It can save you from your worst hangover, a bad breakup, crummy weather, getting fired from your job, you name it, this soup can do it. This is my emotional support soup. I will never move away from Chicago because then I will be too far away to get this soup (Experiment all you want with spice levels, but rest assured, the medium really is quite hot. I'm a spice head, but I find the mild plus to be both delicious and enjoyable). Pho's, thank you guys for being truly excellent at what you do.
