Okay I don't usually do reviews but THIS!!!!!! Ohh yes!!!! As someone that does eat pork and always got mad why they can make other banh mi like the pork one let's say I'm impressed with this restaurant!!!!! Whenever I order the grilled beef sandwich the meat is usually soft like pâté or like a burger meat( can't really explain texture but if you know you know). I really thought this was going to be the same but no you actually get the meat beef!!!!!! My only wish is that they season and grill the beef one like the pork one and also offer the spicy. Sandwiches are roughly $8-9 and all come on a baguette, homemade mayo, pate, pickled carrots/daikon, cilantro, jalapeno, and sliced cucumbers. We got the (1) Classic and (4) Chashu and asked for no jalapeno. Alas, when we got home and started to eat our sandwiches, the jalapenos were still in the sandwich, so just look into your sandwich before eating especially if you have any allergies. The meats in both the sandwiches were plentiful and flavorful. The baguette however was only toasted on the top and not the bottom so it was kind of soft and squishy. I wish the cucumber was sliced a little thinner, but it was a welcomed fresh component. I also wished it had more cilantro. I ordered the barbecue pork and the grilled pork. I tried the grilled pork first the bread is long and thin. The bread is a little hard and not soft at all. Usually, the bread is slightly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, but the bread they used is tougher than normal. The meat has good flavor and even amount of meat was provided. Veggies are nice and crunchy, but I would have liked more daikon and carrots on it. Next, I tried the barbecue pork. The bread on this is a lot better. Maybe the bread on the grilled pork was just a fluke. This sandwich is a little bit bigger than the grilled pork. They put more meat on it and it has a really good solid bite and good flavor on the meat, it was really nice. It's tender and savory , and it looks like they put a little bit more carrots and daikon on this one. Overall, I would give it a 6/10. I would go again if I didn't have another choice or my go to spot is closed to give it another shot. The price is a little bit more on the expensive side. Came here today for lunch and this place made my heart and tummy happy :) As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a cheerful "Welcome to rice and spoon, would you like to dine in or get takeout?" We opted to dine in. It's a small place with 5-6 tables and since it was 2:30pm on a weekday, it wasn't very crowded. As soon as we sat down, the server got us our waters. I ordered two Vietnamese iced coffees and two banh mi sandwiches and overall it was just okay. First off, the coffees did not taste like Vietnamese iced coffees at all. It was beyond bitter, like a burnt popcorn taste, I ended up taking two sips before completely throwing both of them away. The color was dark, no taste of condensed milk whatsoever, and coffee grounds were visibly at the bottom of the cups. I had to double check my receipt to make sure I ordered the right thing. I basically threw away $10. Secondly, the banh mi sandwiches were okay but pretty pricey. I ordered the grilled pork with fried egg which you can't go wrong with and the chashu pork with fried egg. The chashu had more of a pulled pork consistency rather than a soft, tender consistency that is found in ramen or other dishes. Did an order via Yelp for delivery and process was very easy. Wanted to try the Banh Mi here since the reviews are so high and we needed something we could eat ate room temperature at Oakland Zoo since we don't like the food there. The Grilled Pork Banh Mi: Wrapped beautifully in brown craft paper and the baguette is also not overly thick which is awesome. The grilled pork did not taste grilled, it didn't have that distinct fire taste and we didn't see any grill marks, there was also to much mayo compared to some other places. In another review we didn't order Banh Mi from somewhere else because it was $7, we paid $9 for this one :O Egg Rolls: they are longer than most other places and were good, nice and crispy with only a thin layer of rice paper. Shrimp Spring Rolls, slightly too much noodles for our liking. Basically a carrier for the peanut sauce which was good. Overall we spent $48 delivered on 1 banh mi, 3 egg rolls, 2 springs rolls, and 1 vietnamese coffee. The restaurant was closed for indoor dining due to covid. Overall the sandwiches were pretty good but not the best banh mi I've had. Banh Mi Classic ($7.95) - Not entirely sure what the meat was in here since the current description is "homemade pork ham and chicken-mushroom ham". I couldn't really taste the meat but the rest of the sandwich was good with the standard toppings of mayo, pate, pickled carrots, daikon, cilantro, jalapeno, and cucumber. I did wish there was more pate included though so I could taste it more. The bread was a bit hard to eat because the top of the roll had a lot of hard indentations that scratched the roof of your mouth up unless you were careful. 3/5 Banh Mi BBQ Pork ($7.95) - Same as the classic but with BBQ pork. I've never had this before and it was pretty good. The meat was really tasty but the flavors didn't entirely go with the rest of the sandwich. 3/5 Not bad, not great. Good for a quick lunch. My bf and i came here a few weeks ago and we ordered their chashu banh mi with two drinks. I got their iced green thai tea and my bf got their coffee. Their chashu was....not bad, but it wasn't so amazing either. I checked out their banh mi sandwiches and they do have unique ones, but they're pretty expensive. So far I've had three of their sandwiches - the Chashu (Japanese Pork), BBQ Pork and Classic (chicken and sliced pork). By far my favorite was the BBQ pork. Loved it! But since it's really bad for me, next time I will try the Chicken mushroom or avocado. The sliced pork in the Classic didn't seem to be cooked well because it was slimy and tasted like I was eating pieces of uncooked fat. I believe that all of the sandwiches come with pate. However, I don't know if this is true for the avocado one so vegetarians please be clear when you order if you don't want the pate. Like all banh mis, they come with cilantro, jalapenos and pickled carrots and daikon. What a lovely balance with whatever sandwich you choose. The first two times that I came, they had a basket on the counter for selling some rice dumplings. But each time I go, they're out. I have yet to try any other food, but the sandwiches are worthy of my returns. As for the drinks, I love the Green Thai Milk Tea with boba. Unfortunately, they are often out of boba. Perhaps the fact that they run of out of food is why they're not a 5 in my book. The Classic sandwich is $6.95. I believe the BBQ was the same price. However the Chashu was either $7.95 or $8.95. Very disappointed in our Banh Mis. We ordered the chasu Banh mi - which they advertise to be Japanese style but it tasted like the meat in bo kho (beef stew). The meat was tender but the overall sandwich was very dry. We also ordered the grilled beef Banh mi which didn't taste like bo nuong but more of a Vietnamese beef jerky (Viets will know this reference). Again the taste of the meat wasn't bad but the sandwich was very dry. Neither of the sandwiches use pate or Mayo but instead use a "house special sauce" - but I didn't taste or see any sauce in the sandwich. I am wondering if they only use pate and Mayo for their classic Banh mi. However a Banh mi missing these ingredients make it taste very lackluster and dry. In addition the bread tasted chewy and not fresh. And the pickled veggies were not very pickled - the carrots taste like regular carrots. Okay when I first got to have this delight. It was so good I ate lunch in the car I couldn't wait. It's difficult to find a proper banh mi. The service was great. Its parent location had all kinds of Vietnamese cuisine, but I silently thought to myself "but what about Banh Mi?" I was going to find out today at their Grand Opening. I probably would have been their first customer if I didn't have prior engagements (e.g. SDCC returning registration and Santa Clara City Library Comic Con), but I finally got there. The owners recognized me and addressed me by name as I looked at their menu. The decor is similar to Rice and Spoon only with less space. I asked which Banh Mi did they recommend, and the Chashu was the go-to choice, as it was unique. So I ordered that and a Lychee Fusion Green Tea. The place was busy with a large group of regulars at a table and many to-go orders. I got my order within minutes and decided to eat in. The Banh Mi was loaded with the usual toppings and the unique Chashu filling -- it was good and filling. The Lychee Fusion Green Tea (with complimentary Lychee bits) was tasty and refreshing on a warm October day. I'll be back to try out more of their menu and visit next door as well. Worth checking out. Addendum: the above review was posted on the day of their Grand Opening, but the review was somehow added to Rice and Spoon. I went back today around 4pm, and it was quiet. I ordered a Banh Mi Chashu again and a Peach Fusion Black Tea with Lychee bits. The food and drink were great, and the hospitality shown by the employees was terrific. I ordered Goi Cuon and Banh Mi chicken two days ago via Doordash. The banh mi has a funny flavor, but I could figure out what it was. I was hungry so i hate half of it. This is a spin-off of Rice & Spoon Vietnamese, which I actually like. They take standard Vietnamese classics and just add a very modern, hip flair to them. They carry that vibe at this sister spot next door. So everything started off great. Nice concise menu with nice twists to banh mis. Never seen crispy chicken or chasu as filling options. During the shelter in place, it was easy to pick up a take-out order. Placed order through phone (call direct, don't use Grub Hub, don't trust their fee system for pick-ups). Paid and picked up at the door, with proper distancing observed. When I pulled the sandwich out of the bag, it was impressively large and heavy, heavier than most banh mis I've ever gotten. So I ordered the Grilled Beef Banh Mi ($7/2*) and what started off great, turned not so great after several bites. But I'll start with the positives. The Bread (5*) Textbook Vietnamese Baguette. Not as crusty as the French, which is where they adopted it. But for the application it is perfect. Crumbles slightly with a nice tender chew in the interior. The Veggies (4*) Mild pickling of the julienned carrots and daikon were good. Nice and crunchy with that sweet n' sour bite. Sliced fresh jalapenos always welcoming. Didn't see any cilantro, which I usually love. The Meat/Filling (1*) This is where it stumbled into a face plant. When I saw "Grilled" beef, I was expecting maybe thin slices of marinated beef with some sort of grill flavor, possibly some charred-ness, if I were lucky. But what came was like chopped stewed beef in an overly sweet sauce. Super disappointed. I barely ate a third of the sandwich. The Pate (1*) I didn't see this on the menu, but it was included, which normally I would be ecstatic. I usually love a good creamy pate, and will often order an extra dosage. But here it wasn't creamy and smooth at all, it just seemed like pulverized poorly cooked offal. I hate to admit it, but this was awful offal. *rim shot** *sad face emoji** I also got a what appeared to be a Vietnamese Iced Coffee ($4.50/2*). I originally ordered a Milk Tea, but was told they were out. I heard something like a Thai Iced Tea as a replacement over the phone, and said sure. When receiving, it wasn't orange like a Thai Tea but black. I didn't want to wait for another drink so just took it. Well again, I usually love Vietnamese Ice Coffees. I actually thought that I'd never meet one that I wouldn't like. Wrong today womp...womp. It was so sweet that I had to take it home and water it down. Well watered it with more iced coffee. Post pandemic I think banh mi is just ordered at the regular Rice and Spoon location next door. My go to banh mi is still Cam Huong but they only accept cash and sometimes I don't really want to drive all the way to Union City. I ordered the grilled pork banh mi and subsituted their mayo and pate for vegan mayo and vegan pate (again not a usual thing I do but to be on the safe side). The sandwich was large compared to other banh mi places and loaded with meat and veggies. The vegan mayo and vegan pate added a nice touch of flavor. Thanks to Yelp, I was able to find this affordable and well rated place near my friend's job site in Newark. My friend and company had never had a banh mi before, so we all ordered the Classic #1: Vietnamese Ham and Steamed Chicken Mushroom on a Roll. It was so fresh, light, and delicious! The toothsome baguette was crusty and and enjoyable to bite into. It tasted as if it was right out of the oven. Their home made Vietnamese ham was full of flavor and delicately sliced on the sandwich. Their homemade mayonnaise was creamy and gave it just the right flavor. I liked the daikon and pickled carrots, along with the cilantro, onions, and sliced cucumbers, which made it a traditional banh mi. Customer service was excellent. It does take a bit of time to make the sandwiches, so be patient. It's worth the wait. The interior is nice and clean. It's a small eatery located in a small strip mall.
