Grilled Chicken Banh Mi (4.5 out of 5)
    Marshal R.

THE GOOD - Super friendly staff. - - Easy going, courteous. - Only 10 to 15 minutes of waiting after ordering - Grilled Chicken (4.5 out of 5, wife says 5/5) - - Chicken was moist and flavorful. - BBQ Pork (4 out of 5) - - Flavor was good, pretty moist BUT, but there were part of the pork that felt gritty or dry.... not sure. - - - Bread is good quality and both sandwiches stuffed full of ingredients. - Interior clean. THE BAD - Only thing to really note was how the BBQ Pork was gritty or dry. THE UGLY - We came one day after going to the dog park and was excited to try the place.... but they were closed because they were catering instead. Not cool in my opinion. Unless it's a holiday, you need to be open during your set hours. Get ready for some seriously delicious sandwiches! This sandwich restaurant has friendly and courteous staff that will make you feel right at home. You won't have to wait long for your order, with just 10 to 15 minutes between ordering and serving. The grilled chicken is a standout, with moist and flavorful meat that will make your taste buds dance! The BBQ pork sandwich is also good, but there were some gritty or dry bits that could be improved. The sandwiches are generously stuffed with high-quality ingredients and served on good quality bread. The restaurant's interior is clean and well-maintained, making it a comfortable place to enjoy your meal. The only disappointment was when the restaurant was closed for catering during the our first visit, but don't let that stop you from trying this amazing sandwich spot!

I was fading....the hangry me was going into complacent me and "I can eat anything even dirt" me. We spent much of the morning out and about and lunch was definitely much much later than expected. We were in the Ardenwood/Newark area and decided to see what options we can try. Banh Mi by Rice and Spoon ended up being the choice. In short, very flavorful banh mis though they did forget to remove the jalapeno even after we asked, but at $8-9, I don't know if I can stomach going here often. But it's a solid banh mi spot as long as you know what you're getting yourself into in terms of price. L O C A T I O N This place is kind of off the beaten path on Jarvis far far away from the main busy street. There's parking shared by other shops in the same mini plaza. I N S I D E There are roughly 4 tables inside if you'd like to eat inside. It's pretty sparse but I think it's due to reopening after long long years of COVID. M E N U Banh Mi by Rice and Spoon has a standard Vietnamese menu for Rice and Spoon and their banh mis are on a smaller subset. Sandwiches are roughly $8-9 and all come on a baguette, homemade mayo, pate, pickled carrots/daikon, cilantro, jalapeno, and sliced cucumbers. We got the (1) Classic and (4) Chashu and asked for no jalapeno. Alas, when we got home and started to eat our sandwiches, the jalapenos were still in the sandwich, so just look into your sandwich before eating especially if you have any allergies. The meats in both the sandwiches were plentiful and flavorful. The baguette however was only toasted on the top and not the bottom so it was kind of soft and squishy. I wish the cucumber was sliced a little thinner, but it was a welcomed fresh component. I also wished it had more cilantro. S E R V I C E We ordered at the counter, it did take a while but it's probably because of the Vietnamese iced coffee we ordered. Easily paid with a credit card. O V E R A L L If you're looking for a good banh mi place and don't mind the price, then definitely come here. It has both classic and some fusion style flavors which probably account for the prices though the meat quality is there so I totally understand. Definitely try them out if you're craving a banh mi and are in the area!

A local gem! Came here today for lunch and this place made my heart and tummy happy :) As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a cheerful "Welcome to rice and spoon, would you like to dine in or get takeout?" We opted to dine in. It's a small place with 5-6 tables and since it was 2:30pm on a weekday, it wasn't very crowded. As soon as we sat down, the server got us our waters. We ordered Chicken Banh Mi and Vegetable Pho. Both dishes came out at the exact same time and were delicious! Loved every bite. As we were leaving, the server thanked us for visiting. We told her "We'll be back" and we meant it!

I've exhausted all the banh mi places in Hayward, Union City, and Fremont. I absolutely love Vietnamese sandwiches and have tried every shop within these areas. My favorite is still Cam Huong because the banh mi is not only traditional, but it had a great price point which closely reminds me of OC. However, if you're okay spending a bit more at $8/sandwich, Rice and Spoon may be your next stop! We got two classic banh mi sandwiches. They come with ample sliced pork (Vietnamese ham), sliced pork meat loaf (cha lua), sliced veggies including daikon, carrot, cucumber, jalapeños, and cilantro along with a spread of pate and mayo. There's also a splash of soy sauce to top everything off. This sandwich was pretty tasty. The baguette was nicely toasted. Normally the amount of pate is very little, so I requested for more pate. Every ingredient within the sandwich came together quite nicely. The only thing is at $8-9 a sandwich, it's just pricey. Ordering via Grub Hub was simple and sandwiches still tasted great!

I ordered two Vietnamese iced coffees and two banh mi sandwiches and overall it was just okay. First off, the coffees did not taste like Vietnamese iced coffees at all. It was beyond bitter, like a burnt popcorn taste, I ended up taking two sips before completely throwing both of them away. The color was dark, no taste of condensed milk whatsoever, and coffee grounds were visibly at the bottom of the cups. I had to double check my receipt to make sure I ordered the right thing. I basically threw away $10. Secondly, the banh mi sandwiches were okay but pretty pricey. I ordered the grilled pork with fried egg which you can't go wrong with and the chashu pork with fried egg. The chashu had more of a pulled pork consistency rather than a soft, tender consistency that is found in ramen or other dishes. Overall, I would like to come back in hopes that the food and drinks are worth their price.

Did an order via Yelp for delivery and process was very easy. Wanted to try the Banh Mi here since the reviews are so high and we needed something we could eat ate room temperature at Oakland Zoo since we don't like the food there. The Grilled Pork Banh Mi: Wrapped beautifully in brown craft paper and the baguette is also not overly thick which is awesome. The grilled pork did not taste grilled, it didn't have that distinct fire taste and we didn't see any grill marks, there was also to much mayo compared to some other places. In another review we didn't order Banh Mi from somewhere else because it was $7, we paid $9 for this one :O Egg Rolls: they are longer than most other places and were good, nice and crispy with only a thin layer of rice paper. Shrimp Spring Rolls, slightly too much noodles for our liking. Basically a carrier for the peanut sauce which was good. Overall we spent $48 delivered on 1 banh mi, 3 egg rolls, 2 springs rolls, and 1 vietnamese coffee. While everything was good it didn't feel it to pay so much more compared to Cam Hung, Huong Lan, or T & D locally.

We stopped by to grab banh mi sandwiches to go for lunch. I liked their set up of having one door to place the order and another door to pick up. The restaurant was closed for indoor dining due to covid. Overall the sandwiches were pretty good but not the best banh mi I've had. Banh Mi Classic ($7.95) - Not entirely sure what the meat was in here since the current description is "homemade pork ham and chicken-mushroom ham". I couldn't really taste the meat but the rest of the sandwich was good with the standard toppings of mayo, pate, pickled carrots, daikon, cilantro, jalapeno, and cucumber. I did wish there was more pate included though so I could taste it more. The bread was a bit hard to eat because the top of the roll had a lot of hard indentations that scratched the roof of your mouth up unless you were careful. 3/5 Banh Mi BBQ Pork ($7.95) - Same as the classic but with BBQ pork. I've never had this before and it was pretty good. The meat was really tasty but the flavors didn't entirely go with the rest of the sandwich. 3/5 Not bad, not great. Good for a quick lunch. Not sure we'd go out of our way to come back.

I decided to try this place after seeing all the great reviews. Banh Mi is located in a small shopping plaza, so there is plenty of parking. There are a variety of sandwiches to choose (pork, beef, classic, etc). I ordered the Chashu sandwich. This sandwich was delicious! The baguette was fresh and nicely toasted. The pork was tender and juicy. Overall, a great place to grab some delicious Vietnamese sandwiches!

We got the #7 and #2, and our food and drinks arrived surprisingly fast. The service was excellent--the woman who helped us was very kind and welcoming. Overall, we had a great experience and will definitely be coming back. This has officially become our new go-to pho spot!

In San Jose, Huong Lan is one of the top places to get decent, traditional Vietnamese sandwiches…read more This location in Newark is a lot closer when you come from SF since it is half the distant. However, the quality and service needs improvement. As soon as my family and I arrived, the cashier lady expected us to be ready to order. There were no other customers in line. I wanted to get the Vietnamese mung bean layered cake aka Bánh Da Lợn, but they only had the Pandan jello aka Thạch Rau Câu Lá Dứa. When I was ready to order, the lady just stood there standing and then said ready now (sounding somewhat annoyed)! I ordered a ham combo sandwich and an avocado smoothie for my kids. I asked if they used a lot of sugar and opted to lessen the sugar amount if possible. She did not offer the sugar percentage and just walked over to start making the avocado smoothie. Then a customer came in and she stopped to greet him, took his order, then finished our avocado smoothie. The avocado smoothie was smooth and creamy but not very enjoyable as it lacked flavor. My kids drank only a few sips and we ended up tossing almost an entire drink even after saying it was like avocado "ice-cream". It was a hot day too. The sandwich took a while to come out considering they had more than four staffs in the back (you could see the kitchen from the front register), but they still moved very slow. Some of them were just chilling and staring at the front of the store. The French bread was fresh and tasty though. They did not add much filling except for carrots and radish. Limited meat, pate sauce, and barely taste the aioli. Sandwich was still good with the classic, traditional Vietnamese sandwich taste but the one in San Jose did not skip on the quantity in ingredients like they did in this location. Our jello ended up have a mold growing so we did not try it. Texture looked solid though. We also bought the pork sausages which were tiny but tasty. Duc Huong for sure wins in all three categories for sandwiches, pork sausage, and having the Pandan layered cake I liked. Overall, this was still a decent place to get Vietnamese sandwiches. Going in with less expectations would make the experience better. They had a large table seating so customers could eat inside or order meals like a normal restaurant.

They are consistently very good at what they do! Sure, this isn't cutting-edge, fusion type of Vietnamese sandwiches and drinks but through all these years their tradition of delicious foods are stellar. In addition to their various selection of sandwiches and fresh-made drinks/desserts, they also have hot foods at their hofbrau section for various sides of carbs (rice/noodles), proteins, and veggies. Tips: - no credit cards establishment so bring cash for easiest transacting. - try to visit during non-lunch windows as the store gets quite busy. - their rice rolls with pork or shrimp, in addition to their vietnamese rolls are sneaky addictive. Pho VN is located in one of Union City's popular Asian cross street malls, sharing a large parking lot with other outstanding eateries. The space inside the restaurant is large and can comfortably fit small and large parties alike. Reminiscent of the classic Vietnamese restaurants in this area, you'll find each table stocked with utensils, napkins, and sauces and staff scurrying around with bowls or trays of them toward their hungry patrons. As we walked in, we were motioned to sit at any of the open tables; the staff greeted us with menus and got us started with waters. Their menu is comprehensive and includes all your Vietnamese staples including popular appetizers like spring/egg rolls, noodle dishes like pho and vermicelli, rice plates, and delicious iced drinks featuring the traditional phin filtered Vietnamese coffee. For the pho bowls, you'll have the option of a medium or large portion with the primary difference being the amount of noodles you'll get and a slightly smaller protein portion. I ended up getting a large and it was plenty filling but the medium seemed reasonable as well. With each bowl, you'll get a platter of bean sprouts and basil leaves to spruce up your meal. Highly recommend dumping those in right when you get the steaming hot bowl! I also ended up getting an ice coffee - the flavor was strong and balanced out as the ice melted. It was a delicious indulgence! When it came time to pay, we did so up front at the register. They are cash only but I believe cash apps are also accepted. The staff were quick, friendly, and thorough in their service. You'll have a pleasant time here with your party and minimal interruptions from the staff unless you're looking to refill on waters. Overall, Pho VN checks all the boxes for when you're craving a hot bowl of pho and meaty pieces to go with those bites. I haven't had a chance to try their other dishes yet but this location is conveniently located, easy to get to and park, and accessible to other activities and eateries nearby making it very likely I'll be back soon! This watering hole will surely host someone you know if you're a local and if not, get to know the owners as I hear they have origins in the community!
