I've driven by Pho Cao a bunch of times, and finally got to try it when we decided to get carry-out. I ordered the Surf and Turf pho, my s/o got the shaken beef, and my brother got the house fried rice. The pho was nothing special, though I did think it was cool that they gave me raw beef in a separate container from my soup (so it still cooked in my bowl at home). My s/o loved the shaken beef, and I also thought it was quite tasty. The house fried rice, on the other hand, was dry and the BBQ pork wasn't quite as fragrant as it usually is, so it was kind of a letdown. Obviously, take-out isn't the best way of judging a restaurant's food quality, so keep that in mind. We weren't in there for very long, but we really dug the vibes and definitely want to go back to hang out and give the food a second chance. read more

What a delightful surprise! Honestly, if you're just driving by, at best, it looks like a small dive bar but treasures await inside for Foodies! We ordered takeout and ordered a drink while waiting. If you're searching for epic cocktails - forget it. The wine is poured out of those little airport bottles (for freshness? ) but unlike the airlines it was only $4. That said, the locals, the service (Lucas was the perfect host, bartender, and server), and the food was awesome. While we pondered the menu an enormous plated ice cream extravaganza was delivered to the couple next to us and it could've easily been served at a fine dining restaurant. Once home, the Shaken Beef was divine with tender, abundant filet mignon/veggies in the most delicious sauce. It honestly is the best pepper steak I've ever had. My friend thoroughly enjoyed the Buddha Spring Rolls. Even the chicken fried rice stood out with large chunks of perfectly cooked chicken and good flavor. The Pho here is pretty good, the place is just a little strange. It's definitely a "hole-in-the-wall" place, but it can't decide what is wants to be; a night-club, a bar, or a Vietnamese restaurant. The waiter was very nice but the pho was not good at all. Worst pho I've had in Phoenix. I got pho with a special option of having spicy tamarind broth which I've never seen at a viet restaurant before. It tasted okay but it made my stomach feel so uncomfortable and had this tightening up sensation I've never felt before. I couldn't even sit comfortably with it fidgeting. I drove by Pho this week & couldn't wait to try it! Came back tonight for Sunday dinner around 6pm. There was live music and a seat yourself atmosphere. The inside surprised me, because it's basically an old dive bar. We searched for a booth, but they were mostly dirty. I noticed a girl slowly attempting to clear tables. Like 1 cup at a time. Once we sat at a booth for 8, the only option for our family of 3, she stopped cleaning the other booths. The menu was extensive with lots of Asian cuisine, random American food of fries & wings, and of course Pho. The food & service was pretty quick. The food was warm and tasty. As we sat and ate, it was odd to me, as an ex-waitress, how short staffed the place seemed and how long tables stayed dirty. I watched a waiter walk up to a dirty table next to us and clear off 1 fork. Only. Then shake his head at the rest. Our waitress was nice, but literally ran around and shouted responses to customers, "seat your self" "Walk up to the bar" And looked pained when I asked for an extra plate for my son. It was the kind of service that wasn't terrible, but didn't leave room for 5 stars, because they were running around crazy. The music, at 6pm dinner, was also kind of terrible. Been here twice since it re-opened for dine in. The first time was lunch and I had the restaurant to myself. There were a bunch of to-go orders. The dude working the bar was very friendly and helpful. I ordered their summer rolls and pho. LOVE the beef tendons and rare steak. Soup and noodles were decent. Rolls were decent--they put something crunchy in there. The second time I went for dinner and place was packed due to the every other table seating. There were more workers too, but they kinda seemed lost. I had the clay pot and coconut juice. Both were yummy. But i was a little disappointed they made the food and then dumped it into the clay pot. You can tell because how the rice is cooked and because the pot was cool too touch. If they had used the pot itself to cook, the rice would be more dry and stick at the bottom due to crispiness and pot would have been too hot to touch. However, the flavor was still there so it's fine. I think this place is fine for decent Vietnamese food close by, but it is pricier than it should be IMO. However, I get that things are pricier in Scottsdale so in this area, I guess it is acceptable. read more

I've been here once because I was craving Pho and this place was right across the street. When we got there, about 2 other people were inside eating. The place was empty and it seemed as if the floor manager was a one man band basically doing everything. Besides the fact, he was still a good server and we had a pleasant time. The food was great! And so was the waiter, but I wasn't a fan of the atmosphere at all. It's kind of dark and grungy inside. It looks like maybe a dive bar or karaoke bar at night, but it was mid day so that vibe wasn't what we were looking for and the music was so loud we could hardly talk. Food wise, everything tasted great! The prices were nice too. I'm sure if we came here in the evening to drink my review would have a different feel. In summery, if you are nearby and just want some simple and delicious pho, this is your place. Or if you order to go, you'll be happy. But maybe don't go out of your way to come here if you are looking for a cute atmosphere. Used to be one of my favorite places. Literally a place that I would send everybody to go eat. We were trying to go in here the other night. The reason I did not leave this review the other night is because I was completely not in my right mind after what happened. What I'm about to talk about Literally was one of the craziest thing that has ever happened to me. We work late, so we were trying to figure out where to eat. We pull in pho cao, its kinda busy. We walk up to the door and notice that they are doing karaoke. We had been in an environment all day where it was extremely loud working and did not want to be in a loud setting, so we turned around and walked out. Two bald headed gentleman and a 20 something-year-old girl on the patio proceeded to tell us to get our straight asses the F out of there. We don't belong. I looked at her and said excuse me, why not? She said you know why. You don't belong here. Then the two gentlemen she was with approached me, and got even crazier with me. Telling me that if I ever came back, they would kick my ass. Us straight guys aren't welcome there. This is the craziest thing I've ever dealt with because I'm in the hospitality industry. So yeah. Is Pho Cao a dive? Is it a karaoke bar/club? Is it a Vietnamese restaurant with good food? Yes, yes and yes. I can see how there would be very mixed reviews of Pho Cao. We went for lunch, so there wasn't a band or any karaoke going on. If you went for dinner I can see how that might be annoying if you weren't expecting it. So go for lunch! especially if you like quirky places. Regardless, it is a little disorienting when you walk in from the bright sunlight to the darker windowless room and see the stage in front of you. It feels like an awesome place to drown your sorrows. While we didn't have any sorrows the day we were in, we did still have a beer and a cider. Once we took a seat, the wait staff was great, and the food even better. We did not try the namesake pho, but had a rice noodle (bun) salad bowl, house fried rice and chicken curry. The rice noodle bowl was great. Chargrilled pork, shrimp and a crispy spring roll on lettuce, cucumber, carrots, herbs, and rice noodles with fish sauce- so good! The fried rice has chunks of that amazing dense Chinese sausage and an egg on top. It also came with two little chicken drumsticks that were nothing special. The chicken curry was just okay. A little too sweet, and tasted too much like the curry powder you buy at the grocery store. We'll definitely go back for the food. Not the karaoke. We actually were turning around to make way to another restaurant, but decided to give them a try. The outside isn't much to look at, and the inside resembles an old bar and grill ambiance, but don't let that fool you! We were greeted right away, and promptly served waters. We ordered the summer spring rolls, pork pho, and a beef noodle stir fry. Everything was brought out quickly. All ingredients were so fresh and delicious. Compliments to the chef. Beautifully executed with just the right amount of seasoning and spices, and noodles cooked perfectly. Fresh herbs and side condiments. Even the in-house chili paste was perfectly balanced. As a chef that works here in AZ for a highly renowned Restaurateur/executive chef in the state, I highly recommend everyone make this place a favorite! I haven't even eaten here, yet I'm giving this place a single star, and that's for their terribly screwed-up, completely useless website. Their Home page is nothing but a form to request basic information they're too lazy to provide, like telephone and directions. Their Menu page is a mess of jumping, gyrating pages that disappear after two seconds, leaving potential guests no time to study what's being offered. Worse, the 3rd-grade dropout who put the menu together, can't even write dollar mounts in plain English, adding to the confusion. The Calendar page is full of unrecognizable abbreviations, none of which are readily identifiable. If the idiots who own this place want more business they're going to have to earn their high-paying customers' respect. They can start by making them feel welcome, instead of like trespassers. I love Vietnamese food and where I live, there's a paucity of decent Asian restaurants, so this was a real surprise when it was recommended to me last night. Every time I have came in I am in the door as soon as they open. Which is 11 am, always pretty much the first or second guest in. I love the atmosphere and will need to come in during happy hour and the night life. Ok so the Vegan broth! Yesssss! YESSSS! YESSSS! I recently switched jobs and I was in desperate need of a new local Pho joint. I found this place by checking yelp to see what was close and thought I would give it a try. When I first walked in I was very confused. It seemed like I was walking in to an empty nightclub or just a regular hole in the wall bar. Had a strange vibe for what I thought was a Pho joint. I got their basic sliced beef pho with an order of spring rolls and an order of Thai Tea. You could tell that a couple of the bartenders or servers might have been new, but the service was still pretty good. The Pho came out and the broth had a strange taste to it. I couldn't quite place it but it had this weird after taste. I added my usual toppings into it and it tasted a little better. However, a good Pho restaurant should have a great basic broth. They brought out the spring rolls and the single soggy piece of lettuce that was brought out with it was extremely disappointing. I had to ask for more lettuce and was brought one single piece again?? All in all, not so sure i'll be visiting this place again and my search for a good Pho place by my new work has eluded me. read more

So when you pull up you might notice that there is no windows, the parking lot looks sketchy and inside is a mix between a dive bar and a stage... just keep swimming!!! Because at the end of all this is amazing Pho at a great price... save room for desert they serve a coconut with the meat still on the inside (actual coconut!!) filled with ice cream and Sunday type desert... if it is open mic night no way of knowing what you will get but even a bad voice doesn't ruin how good the food is read more

The 5 stars is for our first visit here. We came to Phoenix for a wedding and I was ceaving Pho. Heard about this place and wanted to check it out because it had a bar and a live band. My wife and I order the summer rolls and a pho combo and a plain pho. The noodles were cooked perfectly and the Pho was very good. The summer rolls were also good. There was a live band playing when we got in and then a half an hour later, another band played. It was nice to see the restaurant support local artists. I have to say, the second band was heavy metal and surprisingly pretty good! It can get very loud so if you are here to just enjoy a meal in quiet then this place may not be for you. This is a new location for Pho Cao since they moved. I rather liked this location better than the first since it's easier to access and the layout is more open. Open mic on Sunday evenings! I sat at the bar alone and at first Pho Cao somewhat still confuses me; Vietnamese Pho restaurant at a dive bar? I guess it works in a sense, but I was just trying to watch the game and didn't care much for the performance. I ordered a Export 33 to start and just a bowl of regular Pho. They have ramen Pho, but I wasn't sure if I should go for it since I didn't feel to adventurous that night. Overall, the Pho is pretty good. Broth came nice and piping hot they way I like it! I think the side sprouts, basil, and jalapeno could be at tad bit fresher, but maybe it's out of season. In the end, Pho Cao definitely caters to a new crowd that enjoys their Pho with a beer and live music. You probably won't see many traditional Pho lovers here, but that doesn't matter. I would like to point out I do appreciate good service here. My bartender was busting her butt; as a former waiter, I totally understand that work life and appreciate what it has made me become. Prices are high for pho but if you eat during happy hour, with bogo 1/2 off app and $1 off pho bowls, it's a bit more reasonable. Our waitress didn't give us the discount till we asked for it. I had the Pho Cao special bowl P1. Broth was okay but didn't taste like it had been simmering all day. The noddles were slightly over cooked. We also had the soft spring rolls and the spicy wings. The wings were not crispy and cook just poured buffalo sauce over wings on plate creating a soup rather than tossing them playing. Spring rolls were delicious. Service was fine. Other than male wait staff placing our orders on edge of table then walking away without eye contact, and female server not providing discount before being asked, Service was prompt and courteous. If I could give a negative star, I would. Dirty/dark old bar. Ordered Saki, glass were filthy and dingy. Menu prices are higher than the online price lists. Owner had excuses to give his staff, but wouldn't come out and speak with us. We eat Pho weekly, in Seattle. This was disgusting and an embarrassment to anything Pho.
